The idea behind these lists is to post what you're currently playing, or just played. It's interesting to see who's playing what, to see if people are playing the same things, and to ask questions that might otherwise be relegated to a forum about a game with the benefit of the responses coming from someone who has it fresh on their mind.

Here's last month's list: What We're Playing - January 2014

I am late to the RttA party but I am glad I managed to pick it up on the cheap. Just one play this morning against my wife which I ended up winning 28-20, but I think we both were using our goods incorrectly. We would only move one space to the left to spend the number of goods listed under the peg, when we should have been sending it all the way to zero. Made the game go a bit quicker than we thought it would, but we had fun anyway. Can't wait to try it out again and see how it works correctly.

BTW, we have learned around here that there are no perfect first plays, there are always rules missed by me. So usually after the game my wife just looks at me and asks me to figure out what we did wrong so we can do it correctly the next game.

Back into the 10x10 swing last night and again tonight with this one. Last night we lost to Magneto and the Super Hero Civil War due to some bad luck with the villain deck and some poor deck planning, but tonight we managed to pick up the slack and take out Magneto with 5 cards left in our hero deck. It's funny, when we lose we always want that one or more turn and tonight when we won, both my wife and daughter wanted one more turn after I hit Magneto the final time. So even when we win, we still want to be thwarting evil, or scoring more VPs, whichever.

This will probably be our first one done, I think tonight was our eighth play in for the 10x10 challenge and it really has saved this game for us. I was ready to trade it away before we started this, but my wife looked at me while we were playing and said, "don't ever trade this game away". It's really kind of odd considering she really isn't a huge super hero fan, she watches the movies and is entertained, but she could go without, unlike others in this family.

Thanks again for thinking of the challenge Sarah!

What a great way to start off the month!

I didn't have a particularly great game, being in a resource-poor corner of the galaxy, but it was still a lot of fun. I managed to finagle the best trade agreements and was more or less left alone most of the game because of how poor I was. Late game, one of my neighbours started picking off my planets while trying for a 3 point objective, but I was able to keep him from earning it. Because of that, I ended up tying him for third (amongst 6 players) instead of being alone in 4th.

We are on a Pathfinder kick. This is going to be the first game we complete for the 10x10 challenge. I just hope we can tear ourselves away from it to play some other games. lol.

Last night we started the Skinsaw Murders adventure! The first scenario is Undead Uprising. My husband, playing Imiri, started at the Mill and I, playing Harsk, started at the General Store. Neither of us wanted to deal with Habe’s Sanatorium with its very painful beginning of turn effect. My husband went first and turned over the villain Caizarlu Zerren. My husband was easily able to defeat the Zombie Minion henchmen it threw at him and then the villain was also not difficult. So that closed that location, which is the fastest we’ve ever closed any location. He went to the Village House. It took me 2 turns to find Grayst Sevilla henchmen, which was also not too tough for me, but sadly, I had to banish my Blessing of Calistria to do so. However, as I was putting away that stack, I found the villain, which we left there. My husband unfortunately faced a Satyr, which he could not defeat and it did him a lot of damage, making him lose his whole hand. I moved over to the Village House to help. We were able to get my husband a few new allies that helped him a lot. The only one that he kept at the end was Ilsoari Gandethus while I took Father Zantus from him. The named guys are a lot more powerful than the generic ones. Anyway, after a few more turns, I found the henchmen Pidget Tergelson and defeated him. We maneuvered ourselves so that I went to Habe’s Sanatorium and my husband to the General store. I temporarily closed the sanatorium while my husband took on and defeated the villain. It only took 15 turns, which is our fastest play so far. Since I had to banish 2 blessings, I randomly took from the box and got Blessing of Lamashtu, which is nicely generic in how it helps you defeat a monster, and then another Blessing of the Gods. For the power feat reward, I upped the damage I give to a combat at another location and now give 1d4+2. My husband chose to add the ability to move another character at the end of his turn. I’m really looking forward to utilizing that strategy.

More Spartacus!

We walked down to the boardgame cafe today to meet another couple from the 'geek. They were interested in learning more thematic games, so we taught them Spartacus. Another friend met us there, so we had a 5 player learning game (from 7 points). Darin won, narrowly edging out 2 others who were one point shy.

Rampage!

After Spartacus wrapped up, we played a game of Rampage. It was a blast!

In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we bought it on our way out.

And we got the cafe's last copy of the promotional meeple stickers. We spend much of last night stickering away.

We seem to be up to 9 plays this month. Many of them have been very short, though. We decided to increase the difficulty beyond Heroic by starting with five explosions, and it generally hasn't gone well for us. We did have two perfect games where we rescued all 10 victims, but we also had five games where we rescued only a single victim. There were surprisingly only two "normal" games where we rescued four or five victims. It seems that we either get the fire reasonably under control early on before all the hotspots come out, or it pretty soon becomes hopeless. If the Driver/Operator isn't free to transform into the Rescue Specialist, it's really hard to get those people out. Today's six plays were mostly just frustrating: one of the perfect games, and the five where we saved only a single victim. It's probably time to go back to Heroic so that the game can be a bit more satisfying. Either that, or move on to the expansions. Fortunately I ordered three expansions earlier this week, and should have them in hand before the weekend

Thursday, we decide to break from Pathfinder and play Suburbia. It's been a while since we played and this was only our second game of it ever, so we had to go over all the rules again. Even then, I made poor decisions one after another. I started off by getting population, but then I had no income. My husband, on the other hand, started off solid by pursuing income. I was trying to focus on my secret goal, which was to have the most residences and I think that's main reason I won, though by a narrow margin. When the end of game token came out, I did a huge push towards getting a big residence to have population. But it dropped my reputation to -5 and my income way down too. But it was enough to succeed at my personal goal and one of the public goals and get just ahead of my husband. Now long-term, my husband would have won. My suburb was unsustainable. But for the point that it matter, during scoring, I sure looked good.

We had a long game day yesterday at a local Round Table Pizza. Started around 11 am and we stayed till about 10:15, but the place closed at 11 anyway.

We started with a prototype of Epic Resort that I got from the designer to review and provide feedback. My husband and I had played it Friday night so we were familiar enough that we could teach it to two others. The game went very well. Everyone enjoyed it and only had a few suggestions for improvement, mostly in the rules. It's a very interesting blend of deck building and worker placement set in a fantasy environment where everyone is trying to build up their resort, attract heroes to rest up and fend off monster attacks. It'll be on Kickstarter in March so I definitely recommend checking it out!

After we took a break for lunch, we helped a new person to our designer group playtest his game. It was actually published, though the company did a poor job with it so he wants to revise a few things and try to convince the company to do a second print run, but with more added in so it'll be a deluxe version. Sadly, I think he's got quite an uphill battle ahead of him. Which is too bad since his game is really good.

My husband went off to play several games of Resistance. During one of those games, I sat down with some friends who were about to leave and had them playtest Dark Disciples, one of our micro games. They enjoyed it very much and didn't have anything to change. That was very cool.

Then after Resistance, I got four people to playtest our game BOLT with the new scoring rules. One guy was completely new to the game. One guy had played with the new rules. Two of them had played the old version. It was great to get feedback from them all, and all of it was positive for the new scoring rules. It made the game tighter, shorter and changed some of the strategy, all in good ways.

My husband and I split up after helping with the revised prototype. He played several games of The Resistance. It was so great that everyone was willing to help accommodate my husband's vision disability. Since I didn't want to play as I'm bad at bluffing games, I watched who was a spy. The I'd get up with my husband and we'd go into the other room. If he was a spy, I'd tell him who was. If he wasn't a spy, we'd just hang out for a few moments so no one else would know that he wasn't. It worked very well and he had a lot of fun.

Our friend who used to run the Gamer's Grind store (sadly, he had to close) does a series called After Play on YouTube where he videos people playing a game and then interviews them after. So for Tower, he's going to post it soon for the Kickstarter that launches Feb 17th. Here's the youtube channel, which features quite a few of me and my hubby: http://www.youtube.com/user/GamersGrind/videos

Oh, and hubby won the game.

The leftover people and I decided to play Village, which I was happy about since it's on my 10x10 list. It was a bit tough to teach as they'd never played it before and it's been a while since I played, but it turned out to be a good teaching game. Both liked it and wanted to play again sometime, now that they got a better handle on what to do. But the scores were the closest I've ever seen. I got 47, my friend got 48 and our new friend got 49.

All in all, a great, but exhausting day. Can't wait to do it again!

I think I've played enough games of both this and the base game this month (9 of each) that it's worth listing this as a separate item.

This is the first expansion we got, and it's been a very welcome addition to the game. It introduces some variety and makes things a bit harder without being crazily difficult (unlike our attempted change of introducing a fifth initial explosion to the base game, which led to some frustrating plays). We've only used one side of the board so far, the brownstone, where it's slower to get from side to side because the buildings on either side are attached. And the new character of the Structural Engineer, who eliminates hotspots and repairs walls, introduces an interesting new element.

I was so addicted to this that I played one game solo, which I've never done before.

Also, we had one super-victory at the Heroic level where we saved all 10 victims and also the building: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1119501/ultimate-heroic-...

This is a game of my fiancé's that I'd never played before, but he wanted to get into it because he's just gotten an expansion. We played three times over the course of a couple of days. (It was time to break the Flash Point addiction a bit!)

This is a space game, where you're colonizing and conquering planets where you then produce and trade resources, and there's a research element too. The first game was not very pleasant, because I had no idea what was going on, and had to suddenly start making strategic decisions with zero sense of what the outcome would be. Once I knew what I was doing, the second game was much more fun, enough so that I wanted to play again immediately. But the third game didn't go so well; I tried a slightly different strategy, and it wasn't nearly as successful. There's a bit of a luck element in this game too, as you explore different planets for future development, and as you draw cards from your deck each turn (it's a deck-building game too!). I'm not sure this will ever be a favourite, but it's short enough to play on a weeknight, so it should see enough play to be worth owning.

I've also put this one on my second(!) 10x10 list, and I don't think getting to 10 will be a problem at all.

This one is on my 10x10 list, so we played a few two-player games last night (reportedly not the best number of players, but still recommended). I think it's going to take more than ten plays to decide what I think of this game. When it works, it's great—but it seems like it also has the potential to go very wrong, so two of the three games yesterday were pretty miserable.

Last weekend we went to a small party at Lisa's father's house. They like to play games, but most aren't gamers, so we brought some light, easy to play games. The first one we played was Mord im Arosa, which is a clever game about trying to figure out by sound where cubes are dropping in a tower. This was a hit.

And finally Mush! Mush! Some people had a little trouble with the steering, but overall fun was had, and the race had some good back and forth. I pulled back from lagging early to win the race.

Played this earlier this month to finally get back to our alphabetical game play through (full details in this geeklist). Good little action management game with a lot of ways to approach it.

EDIT: Whoops! Messed up my link. Fixed that.

Got in one play of Space Alert at the first weekend game meeting! Despite some very nasty threats (slime - yuck!), we got through with barely on the scratch on the ship. Sadly, it was too late in the night to keep flying a campaign.

Sat, Feb 8

This was a long weekend of games. Saturday was lots of games, and Sunday & Monday were long games.

We started Saturday off with a game of Defenders of the Realm. It didn't last too long though. We only managed to kill one general before another one killed us.
