Is there a better month for solitaire gaming than February? When all the shine has worn off those new holiday games and you can really get to know your favorites? When Old Man Winter is doing his worst? When procrastinating on tax prep is a viable option?

I think not.

So let's keep making SGOYT one of the best threads on the Geek. I've been playing solitaire against the Hydra deck for Magic: The Gathering and that thing has nothing on SGOYT. Every time I read a comment, two more spring up to replace it. The community that has coalesced around Albert's idea has been amazing, inspiring, and though-provoking, and I'm proud to be a small part of it.

If you haven't already, be sure to subscribe to the Solitaire Games on Your Table Monthly Geeklist SUBSCRIPTION THREAD. Also consider joining and subscribing to the 1 Player guild, which has been graced with all sorts of fascinating discussions lately.

Your Mission, Should You Choose To Accept It:
One of the most valuable things I get from these threads is info on solitaire play variants for multiplayer games that aren't cooperative. There are a lot of games in my collection, particularly two-player ones, that don't make it to the table as often as I'd like, but that I would happily play solo if that was a viable option.

This month I'll give to everyone who posts about a multiplayer game they've played using a solitaire variant. The amount of is to be determined, as these threads take on a life of their own and I don't want to go into debt, but I'll contribute every tipped to this thread to the cause.

Happy gaming, everyone, and thanks again!

Ok, so I want to get something set up and played, but I can't really decided. I have too many good games.

So, if you guys could please look through my collection and tell me what you want me to play. I'll try to write up a detailed session report with pictures and all.

*EDIT*

Ok, Decision time.

I'll play..... LOVE LETTER....

Darn, i lost in the first round.

Seriously, I'll play a game of Forlorn Hope, then Struggle for the Galactic Empire with pictures!

I started February by playing 51st State.

This game is often compared to Race for the Galaxy but with a post-apocalyptic/Mad Max feel. It's very thematic and although it's only listed as 2-4 players, there is an official solo variant.

I really love the theme, so I always enjoy playing this game. It tells a good story

I love the topic of this Co-op game, The Germans first invasion of Poland in 1939. My wife is from Poland and we were actually at Westerplatte a few years ago, so when I saw this game come out I had to get it. It looks really easy, it takes about 4 minutes to understand the rules. I initially thought, oh great, this is going to be way too easy, but after 4 plays on the medium difficulty level, I have yet to win. The Germans attack you relentlessly, there never is a dull moment. A few pictures of my recent defeat:

6 inches of snow has slowed work down a bit. Was able to get in a game today. Got "less than humble" at first with a string of good cards. Recruiting was easy, found Barrabas, Piety stayed up. I was then taught a lesson with 4 cards in a row moving Pilate. Failed to reduce the threat (should have sent Peter ) and Pilate made it to Jerusalem. Jesus was arrested and imprisoned. Never heard from again. Major defeat.

Play #2

Recruited many apostles while on the Jordan. Simon able to keep Pilate slowed down. Able to keep the other leaders back with good Reduce Threat rolls. Judas, Pilate and Jesus enter Jerusalem at the end. Renown is 16. Minor victory.

Feb. 4th
Work still quiet. Got in another game. Really getting the hang of it. Starting to focus more on decision making rather than remembering rules. Started well. I've learned to stay on the Jordan as long as I can. Recruiting apostles is so much easier than acquiring by teaching. Recruited Judas and made it to Galilee with Piety low but intact. Unfortunately Herod made it to Jerusalem despite Thaddeus' efforts to slow him. I had 4 actions to Reduce Threat and send him out of Jerusalem to buy more time. Needed a 3 on a d6. I rolled 1...1...2...1! Game over. Major defeat.

Play#2 today: Jesus, Judas and Caiaphas in Jerusalem Renown=16 Minor Victory

Using these rule tweaks Captain Sullen Damask still had a pretty lousy day. Part of the problem was I drew the Revenants mission first. I actually came out of it ok with a little gold and not having spent too much ammo, but lost a fair amount of crew, which meant as I was working on getting 40 gold for the Upgrades mission too many pirate attacks arrrh depleted my ammo and then it was actually bad weather that killed my last crew member and so with no ammo or crew Captain Damask was forced to limp the Swiftwind home and give up his life as a Free captain.

's Android: Hunters variant.

Sci-fi mysteries are basically my chocolate and peanut butter (as you can probably tell from my avatar), so I've been absolutely dying to find a workable solo version (there's no way my group will sit still long enough to learn and play this).

It's basically a 1-on-1 variant where you play the base game with a few tweaks against another detective that uses an AI.

I can't speak to how well the variant plays versus the multiplayer version, but I will say this: what it delivered was an incredibly thematic, story-driven cat-and-mouse game set in the Android universe.

My detective Louis Blaine fell short of victory; even though I'd fingered Thomas Haas as the murderer, at the end the evidence pointed to the hacker Noise. Along the way, I put to rest the ghosts of an unsolved case from my past and fell irrevocably under the thumb of a crime boss thanks to damning evidence of my corrupt past.

Score: -2 VP, thanks to my psychic clone assassin adversary scrambling my brain (and evidence tokens) two turns before the end of the game.

It actually plays very much like a competitive version of Arkham Horror, if you can envision that. Understanding the strategies and rules made this a 4-hour affair from setup to takedown, but that included time to learn both the basic rules and the variant, in addition to getting the rhythm of the turns down - I expect the next game (and believe me, there WILL be a next game, and another, and another...) to clock in at no more than 2 hours or so.

More thoughts later this week after another couple go-rounds, but right now I'm just over the moon with both the game and the solo experience, and thrilled that there's a satisfying way to get Android on the table.

UPDATE: Played the same scenario a second time now that I wasn't trying to learn all the rules PLUS the variant PLUS the delta between the two, and with more time to soak in the atmosphere... wow. Such a great storytelling engine.

Even using the same scenario and the same characters (the variant matches each detective with a specific Hunter), I tried out a different strategy (now that I knew, you know, the rules) and though I didn't do much better, I felt more in control and like I had a fighting chance. This game has some of the strongest storytelling I've ever seen, and it's not just flavor - it's the core mechanic.

I also dig the fact that each detective appears to have a distinctive play style, and that there are multiple paths to victory.

I can honestly say I've never played a game quite like this one. If the names Rick Deckard, Tex Murphy, or Case resonate with you, you'll love it.

So I'm taking a page out of Deathworks' True Solo Handbook and started playing this game with one character. The game isn't intended to be played solitaire at all, let alone with one character. Playing this way makes it a straight up push-your-luck affair, but the theme really appeals to me. I enjoy the art, the cyberpunk-related items, and the pressure of the timer to get out of the building before you get caught....which I haven't done yet in five tries.

I play all of the rules as written. The only changes I have been making are tweaks to the setup. In this session, I set the Alarm Dial to -1 and gave my Operative two Specialist Items plus four Random Items (normally, he would get 2 and 2).

The next time I play, I will make one more tweak...five Rooms per floor instead of six. I'm more interested in having fun and playing out the narrative rather than getting a high score, and I think having one less room on each floor will allow me to get further into the building and witness more action and adventure. But, I won't find that out until next time.

Meanwhile, here's a quick rundown of today's session:

Variants: Extraction, Specialists
Operative: Hugo Cash
Starting Items: Call for Backup, Sledgehammer, Qianju PT, Movement Tracker, Signal Boost, Subsonic Emitter
Starting Alarm: -1

Hugo Cash entered the building through the Infirmary, hoping to make a quick run up to the second floor. Quickly, he advanced through the Biomedical Lab and the Incinerator...hm, what are they getting rid of over there?

While there were a few ZetaBytes of data up for grabs, Cash was looking for a bigger haul. Unfortunately, he took a wrong turn running into Officer Nelson at the Security Station. A fight broke out. Shots were fired. And Cash was wounded. Officer Nelson called for security as Cash hobbled off as fast as he could.

He ended up in the Surveillance Room triggering more alarms. Things were not going well for Cash. After interfacing with the security system there, he was able to break the Tech Lock he saw back in the Security Station.

Like a Qinju PT, Cash races back to the Security Station searching for some additional items to help his cause. Finding some Remote Spyware and a Phase Fluxx, he uses his Movement Tracker to advance to the Environmental Testing Area.

Cash Races back to the Security Station

Hacking his way into the building's computers, he is able to send a fake message ahead to the Computer Lab causing the Lab Worker there to leave his post. Finally, Cash reaches the Computer Lab and makes his first extraction of data.

Moving forward into the Server Farm, Cash extracts more valuable data to use against the evil corporation. However, trouble is ahead. Cash advances into the VP's Office hoping to gather some well hidden information. Instead, he surprises Leah Bailey finishing up some work for the VP. She yells out for help, and runs out of the office.

Cash is still hurting from his earlier run-in with Nelson and needs to find something to help his medical situation or he'll never get out of the building. Searching the VP's Office, Cash finds just what he needs, the Med Tech, and uses it to heal his wounds. Grabbing the Circuit Talon on his way out, he runs after Leah Bailey.

Cash Heals his Wounds

The race is on!

Leah Bailey has a head start and Cash doubts he'll be able to catch her. He chases her back through the Server Farm and the Computer Lab. Then the Environmental Test Area. And the Surveillance Room. She is always one step ahead and just out of reach.

Exhausted and still a bit sore, Cash finally gives in. She is too fast. He's sure she has warned Officer Nelson to watch out for him as she passed through the Security Room. But Cash is prepared this time.

Setting the Circuit Talon in motion, he is able to knock Nelson unconscious, grabbing some additional data files in the process.

Cash Initializes the Circuit Talon

But is he too late?

Cash moves into the Surveillance Room and Calls for Backup to be ready when he gets outside the building. But as he disconnects the call, he hears the security force enter the building.

Leah Bailey has reached the exit and retrieved the help of the Police. Cash will not make it out. The 20 ZB of data he extracted is useless.

Leah Reaches the Exit before Cash

OK, I have played all three runners in the base game now. I really enjoyed my time with this game and can whole heartedly recommend it to solitaire gamers with the variant posted.

I didn't play the scrabble tile solo variant version, but I have no reason to believe that it isn't a good version also.

I did read the variant to play solo as the corporation. It looks like it would work just fine. I am going to come back to this game to try it as well.

Fun week of Netrunner! Alas, other games on my shelf are calling me.

Fun week for me. I kickstarted my first game ever. And I had some awesome Tzolk'in fun. Well except for the one boardgame fail that I played in the middle of the week. And by fail, I mean I played a solitaire game of a game and it made me realize that I didn't like the game. I won't get into that though.

Not this game though. I bought this game last year and tried it once with a friend. Really liked it, but he is very much into the cult of the new. Which means the game never got played again.

Then one of you good folks tipped me onto the fact that thee was a solitaire variant for this game. Played it three times in the past few nights and I loved the variant. I guess it probably looses something in the translation into a solitaire game, but I don't think it matters because it was a lot of fun.

I won two of the three games. The first game was down the to the wire. I was neck and neck with the corperation and I just edged him out with an agenda score.

The second game was a loss. I was playing along and the AI did three net damage to me, but I only had 2 cards in hand. In this game, your life is the cards in your hand.

In the third game, I slaughtered the AI because his R+D section was left unprotected without any Ice, so I could make runs on it repeatedly.

All in all, it is a good solitaire variant that I could see myself tweaking so that I can play against certain styles of play. I am pretty convinced I am going to get some expansions to this game so that I can deckbuild (both myself and the AI). Also looking forward to playing against the runner AI variant as well as it is by the same author.

The four female investigators of this expansion managed to avoid Tsathogguah's awakening by sealing six locations, with the Doom Track at nine and the Terror Track at only 1.

I was lucky and there were no Gate bursts breaking any seals.

First time I win using only Dunwich, perhaps because I used four investigators. I usually only use three.

Played Base+Dunwich against Glakki (a rematch).

I won the game initially with a 9 on the Doom Track and a terror level of 2. However, after the game I realized I was playing a rule wrong where I was removing a doom counter whenever I sealed a gate (you can only do so when using an Elder Sign). I think I may have been misplaying this rule for a couple of games. It was rereading Universal Head's rules summary that I found my mistake. I'm not convinced I would have lost, I probably would have just changed tactics.

I have to say the base game is changed with the new board. Dunwich brings Gate bursts that means you are not guaranteed that the gate is sealed. Second, the second board adds more unstable locations that can ramp up the amount of open gates (with 4 investigators, 7 open gates equals a loss).

In the base game, you tend to gather clues before going after gates so that you can close and SEAL them (5 clue tokens to seal a gate). However, with that second board, I'm seeing that you have to send someone to close some without sealing because there just isn't time (lost 1st game from too many gates and nearly lost the second).

I also used a variant of mine that makes you see more location cards. One of the few knocks I have against AH is that there are all these different locations on the board that you would never visit in a normal game because they serve next to no useful purpose. With this variant, whenever a mythos card tells you to put tokens on an unstable location, I picked a second stable location to get a clue token. So for instance, if the Unvisited Isle gets a clue token, something from there washes ashore at The Docks location. If The Silver Twilight Lodge gets a clue token, someone has witnessed something and is currently escaping at the Train Station. Since you usually end movement at a location to pick up clue tokens, you'll end up having encounters at spots you normally don't visit. It's thematic and adds more clue tokens without making the game that much easier. If something removes clue tokens from an unstable location (usually a gate open), you also remove it from the stable location. If you can't put a clue token on an unstable location (like if a gate is already there), none are put on the stable location it is tied too.

I felt more clue tokens was needed because Dunwich added characters whose skills are only triggered with the use of Clue tokens. Since these tokens are hard to come by normally, these characters are left unused. This changes things. It also increases the fun factor since with more tokens, you are more likely to burn them for extra die rolls, allowing a more push-your-luck element to come through.

The second variant I'm using is that whenever you use a locations alternate ability (such as healing sanity at Arkham Asylum), you still encounter a card afterwards. There are a lot of location cards as you add expansions, and there is no reason not to give incentive to visit them. For me, I'm finding that it really makes Arkham come alive. I mean, when was the last time you went to the Bank/Arkham Asylum/Independence Square just to encounter that locations card? You go to the bank only for a loan, the Asylum to heal and the Square to close a gate. So that pile of white location cards that comprise this district, the one that gets taller with the expansions, just sits there untouched, unvisited. Not for me.

No, not ios, the actual card game. There is a solo variant that is very interesting. You put 50 victory points into the pool. Everytime you remove a card from the center row (banish, purchase or defeat), you slide the cards in the center row to the right and add news cards to the left. At the end of your turn, The Cult (dummy player), gets the first two cards on the right. IF it's a monster card, the card goes to the void and The Cult gets victory points from the pool.

I won 87-83 (I am a seasoned Ascension player). It's a nice way to play the game when no one else is around since this version is not available as an app. I like the new rules this brings in. The solo variant adds a nice puzzle element to it. You really have to work the center row in order to not give up big points to The Cult, but at the same time you don't want to put cards in your deck that won't synergize with each other.

Yet another entry that would never have happened had I not shown up here at SGoYT. You all must have jobs in sales.

As far as I can tell, this one should live up to the hype. I scored a 12 on my first game. Not sure I got every rule right, not sure I "get" the strategy or flow yet, but I had fun with it.

My two questions (for now): In the solitaire game, do you simply buy the cards from the offer and immediately play them? Do you keep a hand of cards if you don't want to play one yet?

And can you have as many of a given type of card in play as you want? I kept reading about "revealed" cards and I know there are points when a card is placed under another card, but I didn't catch how that fit into the solitaire game. I'll go and watch rahdo's video again, but I seem to get answers more quickly here.

2-21-14: Set up round 2 this evening and actually knocked it out in just 30 minutes or so. I scored a 16 which I was pretty happy with for a second game, but I had a pretty crappy draw at the beginning so I wonder how it might have gone if I'd just gotten one useful customer in that first round.

Really like this game. The puzzle of it is quite satisfying.

2nd mission for the Queen Bee should have been nice and easy. Everything seemed like a cake walk until a 190 came at me from 6 o'clock high right after my bombing run. I had my radio operator and top turret busy with a vertical diving 190, and I felt good the tail gunner had this. Wrong! That 190 put the hurt on with 7 hits.

I just love how intense each die roll is as the narrative is told. I made it out pretty banged up, but no lost crew and just a limping plane was quite a relief!

UPDATE: So I flew a couple more missions tonight. Not so good! I rolled for St. Omer and a nice short flight. A single 190 came at me from a verticdal dive. Engine one was hit and didn't feather so I had to bail out before even getting a chance to drop my bombs. Somehow my navigator, co-pilot, radio operator, and starboard waist gunner made it back to England.

Queen Bee was no more, so Beer Barrel took over. This time my bombardier got seriously hurt and my navigator was KIA just as I made it to the target zone. My poor navigator made it all the way back to England to fly once more only to be killed the next time up.

Having had a go at The Hunters, I decided to dust off my copy of B17 Queen of the Skies and start another campaign. My recent plays have been large 18 plane solo affairs flying each and every plane, which has been great fun managing a whole squadron but, very time consuming. I decided to give myself a break and just fly the one plane and using the normal method of early nursery missions. Normally I just throw my planes into the deep end and roll for any target as if they had already flown the 'easier' closer targets.

The log so far:

Mission #1 Cherbourg Airfield.
No bomb drop as bomb doors inoperable.
Tail Gunner seriously wounded and medically discharged.
Starboard Waist Gunner frostbite but able to continue service.
No confirmed kills for B17 Northern Soul.

Mission #2 Abbeville Airfield.
Bombs delivered to target.
20% accuracy.
No crew casualties.
No confirmed kills for B17 Northern Soul.

Mission #3 Amiens Railyard
Bombs delivered to target.
5% accuracy.
Co-pilot Killed-in-action.
Radio Operator Killed-in-action.
Starboard Waist Gunner seriously wounded, died of wounds.
Pilot seriously wounded but able to continue service.
Engineer took control of plane and flew it home.
Starboard wing outboard fuel tank fire, steep dive extinguished fire B17 out of formation for homebound flight.
No confirmed kills for B17 Northern Soul.

Mission #4 Cherbourg Airfield.
Bombs delivered to target.
40%accuracy.
Starboard Waist Gunner seriously wounded, medically discharged.
Port Waist Gunner Killed-in-action.
Engine #4 runaway but prop feathered. Engine out.
No confirmed kills for B17 Northern Soul.

Mission #5 Amiens Railyard
Bombs delivered to target.
30% accuracy.
Tail Gunner frostbite, unable to continue service, medically discharged.
Navigator seriously wounded, recovered, unable to continue service, medically discharged.
Port wing outboard fuel tank fire, steep dive extinguished fire, B17 out of formation for homebound flight. Extensive use of evasive manoeuvres to throw off enemy attacks.
Tail Gunner obtained a confirmed kill of a ME109 the first for B17 Northern Soul.

On the last day of Feb, I decided to solo this (normally 2 player) game. Why? Because I just picked up a deck of Custom Event Cards mentioned on this thread.

Combat Events are a an optional rule, you play one whenever you roll a d10-1. Again, combat events were designed for a 2 player game, but they work even better solo because of the randomness factor. As it turned out, the random event I DID pull during the solo game involved hidden units, and every unit in my game was out in the open (all but 2 units were vehicles entering from off board and cannot be hidden), but it looks like it will work out in future games.

Then, I found out that just yesterday the game's designer really likes the cards and plans on expanding their use in a future module. Read more about that here.

I really enjoy the solo variant for this game. It plays completely different than the multiplayer version, with more of a focus on deck management, but it's a really clever game. So far, I'm 2-4 in reaching the 35 point victory barrier. Good stuff.

Slower day at work again. Shhhh. whistle

Helped Kickstart this and received it many months ago. Brought it to work to play for the first time.

The artwork is beautiful and the theme is very interesting to me. My only complaint would be the cards seem very thin but the linen finish is nice.

I played the solo variant and lost (21 points). I have not had a chance to play the two player game. I say that because I think the theme would be more fitting in the 2 player game. With one player playing Heaven and one playing Hell using their various virtues, temptations, sins intercessions and relics to bring souls to their "side". The designer himself says the two player plays more as a push your luck style game which I tend to enjoy. The Solo Variant seems to be more of a rummy/poker game with the theme tacked on.

That being said I did enjoy it and if we get the wintry mix of death this afternoon that is apparently coming I may be able to play again.

Tonight I tried a brand new character, Marmelee (whose name and demeanor reminds me of Magrat from Terry Pratchett's Discworld books) in the first BattleQuest dungeon with the armor that pushes life up to 50. She impressed me in the first few levels, and even dealt with the werewolves fairly summarily.

However, she must not have dealt with the werewolves well enough, because she lost life down to 21.

Going into the Slime Room, she lost the first time, and succeeded the second time with 2 life left over, which was not enough to, in any reasonable probable outcome, defeat the final boss.

Not getting hit as often is what Marmelee needs to do in order to survive. And then striking back from great range is her strength, although at least one of her styles is difficult to position because it has no additional retreat at activation or start of beat. I like that some of her pairs allowed skipping over frontwards zombies to strike at the slime lord behind.

Although this all makes me despair about Byron once I work my way up to him. (I despair, though, that he might not be able to dungeon delve; I don't remember if he's one of the forbidden characters or not.)

I just finished my review of The Hunters (haven't posted it yet because I need a few more pics) and am still working on one for Dawn of the Zeds 2nd Edition. I love both so they will take up at least some of my February solo gaming time.

I bought the latest BattleCON game and unpacked it the other night (what a treasure trove!), and was surprised to discover it has a solo co-op mode. This means I should research my purchases better, but it also means I get to dip my toe into this ocean of content without having to find an opponent.

Level 99 knocked my socks off with Pixel Tactics, so I'm hoping their ability to combine loads of asymmetrical powers into a coherent game carries through to this one. Pretty much everyone seems to love it so I'm guessing it'll be a purchase I won't regret. I'm stunned by how much game they packed into this box, and love that the first thing you see when you open the lid is DON'T PANIC written in huge letters. Every copy should have come with a towel.

Had to go to bed before I finished this one. I enjoy it. Is it tough? No. But it's lovely to look at and helps me get through watching figure skating. It really is a nice peaceful game to play. I enjoy making the books and the collections. I've got it pimped now and have mounted the board to matte board and have colored eurocubes from meeplesource and Arts cow cards. Todd's artwork is just perfect and I just appreciate the easygoing sensory experience.

Grabbed this in a trade wanting some solitaire, swashbuckling goodness.

As I sorted through the counters and read the first part of the rules, I anticipated a complex, but intuitive game of sacking ships and swilling rum.

Complex? Yup. Intuitive? Not quite yet. I'm playing two players until I get the rules down so I placed both their pirates onto shipping lanes with merchants on their first two turns all set to attack them and get some quick booty, but...

I couldn't nail down what you do with the merchants. There's a "search" and a "capture" operation, but I can't tell if you have to search first or if merchants are automatically revealed when you're on their hex.

I started late and I'm exhausted so I'm sure the rules will fall into place in due time. I'm excited about the game, though. Seems to have a pretty epic scope.

2-22-14: After messing with this a little bit more today, I think I'm going to shelve it until one of my upcoming weeks off. This is seeming like the kind of game that I'm going to want set up for a few days to slowly work through and right now is just not conducive to that.

Really excited for that, though...

Well I know my card has been charged so I'm hoping it gets sent out soon. I've really been looking forward to this one. I find the wars of the roses very interesting and look forward to playing out some of the main battles.

Update: GMT has the scenario book up on its site so I just read through it and am even more excited to play this. Hopefully it ships to me soon!
