The Two-Player PnP Game Design Contest for 2014 is underway! If you are not familiar with the rules of the contest, it's simple:

To submit your game to the contest:

1) Create a Work-in-Progress or WIP thread in the Board Game Design forum for your two-player game.

(Note: I realize that not everyone will read the rules closely and that some of you will post your WIP in the Design Contest forum. This will not disqualify your submission. However, more people frequent the Design forum versus the Contest forum. You will absolutely receive more traffic and feedback if you post in the Design forum.)

2) Create a new Item in this Contest Geeklist, following the example shown below.

3) Post, in the contest thread and in this Contest Geeklist, a link to your WIP thread.

4) Please keep discussions of specific games within their respective threads, and discussions of the contest or other general topics in the contest thread.

You may, of course, post major announcements about your game to the contest thread and to this Contest Geeklist, but please be circumspect.

5) Include a link to the contest thread in the first post of your WIP thread.

6) As the game is developed, post the file link(s) to the game in both the first post of your WIP and in the game's Item entry in this GeekList.

NOTE: Your game does not need to be in a Completed phase by the end of the submission deadline in order to qualify. We can judge your game based on the latest prototype. Just send me a GeekMail and I will mark the game as such. Of course, incomplete games are not likely to get voted as highly as finished and polished games. On the other hand, just like all artforms, some games are never really "complete," merely abandoned, so just do your best.

Below you will find an example of the information you may want to include in your game's Item entry. If you need help posting an Item to this Geeklist, please do not hesitate to ask!

Royal Python

A Board game looking very similar to my current archaeological obsession - the game of Mehen (i.e. a coiled snake), powered by a Decktet deck.

Number of Players: 2-6?

Estimated Playtime: 30-45 minutes

Components:
*4-page rule book
*9 Cobra cards
*1-page Board
Basic Decktet Deck (player-provided)
6 tokens matching a deck suit per player (player-provided)

Players each have 6 tokens (or fewer with larger numbers of players) that match up to the suit of their choice and can move just one in each turn but using as many cards from their hand of 4 as they have in one suit. If it happens to match your suit you can take a new card instantly.

Players race to the head of the snake, crown their token and then can gobble the other player's pieces on the way back to the tail. Players score at the end of the game according to the final positions of each of the pieces that they still have on the board.

The "Snake in the Grass" Board has now been finished:

Spirama / Cat Chess

Inspired by a picture of an alien-looking game in a graphic novel entitled "The Arrival" by Shaun Tan, this is a short, simple game but with plenty of thinking involved.

Best played on a "best out of 3 or 5" basis. A great filler game.

Spirama:

Alternative Cat Chess Version (playing identically)

Number of Players: 2 or 3

Estimated Playtime: 5 minutes (but usually played in multiples eg 3 or 5)

Components:
*1 rule sheet
*9 goal cards
*1 page Board
*9 Pieces (from 1 sheet A4)
36 Scoring tokens (player provided)

Each player has a card (without text) indicating secret goals as to which pieces should be next to each other or in which order. Players take it in turns to place the pieces anywhere on the board that they like (one per space) and then, once they are all on the board, to move (or not move) any piece once that no one has yet activated. Once each piece has been activated then the game ends and players score a point for each goal achieved.

Rescue the King is a strategic dexterity game.

Components:

26 discs (glued-on chess pieces optional)
Two throne stickers (you'll have more, but you use two every time you play) (any stickers work as the thrones; I just cut out some squares about the same size as the discs)

Play time: 15 minutes.

Here are some printable files so you can just use stickers. I've had them for a while up on here but forgot to put them on the geeklist too.

And possibly more (I'm still trying to assemble the full Dream Team)...

Our entry is a stand-alone "expansion" (ie. you won't need the base game) for Skirmish Tactics Apocalypse, called:

Humaliens vs. the Deep Ones

If you're not familiar with Skirmish Tactics Apocalypse, it's a two player dice-based skirmish-level tabletop game set in a post-apocalyptic near future. It was originally designed, developed, and tested in 2012 and into 2013, and it won best "pre-contest game" for this competition last year.

We're hoping to follow that success with another great entry.

Unlike Skirmish Tactics Apocalypse, which used an artist outside of the BGG community, all of our art is being done by the fan community (namely, Jeff Baker).

Here's a preview of some of what he's already completed for this game:

We're designing an all-new board, which will be conceptually similar to the board used in Skirmish Tactics Apocalypse, but will be themed after the new factions developed for this expansion.

Here are a couple sample character cards for the game:

There are TONS of in-depth discussions going on right now on the game forums, but here is the main project overview thread which links to everything.

Once we get to an alpha playtest state, I'll post something in the BGG game design forums requesting playtesters.

Carnival of Blood OR Royal Caribbean Beat Down

So I had this thought and posted it in the Wargame sub-forum

So I've been reading Castles of Steel and came across the Battle of Trindade. This may be the greatest naval ship dual of all time. Basically two armed cruise ships fought each other in the south Atlantic. The British Carmania and the German Cap Trafalgar. A fun fact is that the Cap Trafalgar had been disguised to look like the Carmania. Anyway both ships had some 4" guns. No fancy fire control, manually sight those guns. No fancy ammo elevators, carry those shells by hand! They also had machine guns, that came into range during the battle, and did no damage. So the Carmania had been hulled under the waterline and the bridge was destroyed. She had been hit 73 times. Just as she was about to flee the Cap Trafalgar sank. It was on fire and had also been hulled below the waterline. The Carmania was able to limp into port afterwards though!

I really want a game of the modern equivalent. An armed Carnival ship against an Armed Royal Caribbean ship. One of my favorite parts of capital ship games is finding out what compartment got hit / system got destroyed. In this game there would be so many compartments! Ohh you hit the slide, no effect. Nooo you hit the bar! Crew morale is down! (clearly this is a light game) Also you will have to find new travel paths for the ammo handlers as the normal ones get destroyed! Got to keep that rate of fire up! Perhaps I am crazy, but that sounds like fun…

Dawn of Erenath: The Rift Opens

Thread: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/14777528#14777528

Time: Hopefully 15-20 minutes

Component Density: Fairly low. Custom dice may be an obstacle for some.

Gameplay: Dice drafting and character activation to quickly eliminate the opponent's six characters. Has a possible co-op endgame.

Please come participate in the thread, all comments are welcome. My browser has been having issues with geeklists so I may not check back here often, sorry.

“Meeeeh!” Sheep are marching in a sunny day. A herd of black sheep and a herd of
white sheep meet each other on the bridge form different ends. Unfortunately,
the bridge was too narrow for them to pass by each other. Can you get over the
bridge before your fellow sheep player does?

Rules
1.Each player alternatively takes turns to move his/her sheep.

2.Only one sheep can be moved in a turn (unless they are stacked).

3.The first player to move all his/her sheep across the bridge wins the game.
(See below for the detailed movement rules)

Game Set Up
1.Each player chooses a color and takes all 5 sheep meeples.
- If playing with coins, please use coins of two different sizes.

2.Each player takes a side as his/her starting position (either 1 or 2)
and places all his/her sheep on the starting position.
(The first player who moves all his/her sheep to the other end of the bridge wins the game)

3.Each player tosses all his/her sheep (or coins) to determine their status in the game.
-Standing sheep; Sleeping sheep
-If using coins, differentiate them with heads and tails.

Movement rules
1.If there is no other sheep in front of you sheep, you may advance the sheep one space.

2.If there is at least one sheep (of any color) of the same status in front of your sheep,
your sheep may jump over the sheep. You may jump over several sheep of the same status
if they occupy consecutive space.

3.If there is at least one sheep (of any color) of different status in front of your sheep,
your sheep may stack on top of the sheep.

4.You may move any one of your sheep within a stack, and all sheep in the stack must be moved together.

-Example A: When moving the black sleeping sheep, it may jump over the other black sleeping
sheep in front of it. And all other sheep in the same stack together will jump together.

-Example B: When moving the white sleeping sheep, it may only advance one space. And all
other sheep in the same stack will advance together.

Vinland

By J. Vandel

Number of Players: 2

Estimated Playtime: 40-60 minutes

Components:
4-page rule book
18 Cards
20 wooden tokens (player-provided)

Summary:

"In the darkness of the winternight the young men gathered around the fire, listening to the old man`s tale. He claimed to be one of the men, who once discovered the fabled lands of Vinland. But was it true? Even as the old man left, his stories remained, took root in the dreams and desires of men. Most of them kept dreaming but some brave or foolish enought were ready to leave their lifes behind and become legends, or die trying.
This is their Story."

In Vinland, the Players take the Role of two of four characters from the Vinland Saga, the merchant brothers Helgi and Finnbogi, the fierce shieldmaiden Freydís and her brother Leif Eiríksson, children of Erik the Red and in their shadow, Eyiolf Thorgestsson seeking revenge for a blood depth. Adventures and fame will welcome the brave, if they survive the sea of storms and blood, entangled in a net of betrayal and ambition.
The first version of Vinland will follow the characters on their travel across Greenland, past the frozen island of bears and beyond the deep forests of Markland. The Game can be either played as a racing game, to reach Vinland first, or as a co-op game on a shared expedition. Vinland will be a 18 Cards game and tries to merge the dense historical references with a light encountersystem.
