Oh boy...the title gets worse every year...

But I am happy to say that this GeekList is a month earlier than last year so that's an improvement.

We are very happy to announce that BorderCon will indeed be happening again in 2014 with the support of our major sponsor, the Toy and Game Expo.

The goals for our Con are quite simple really...To offer a weekend on the Australian Gaming Calendar where 'our people' can get away and enjoy up to 4 days of social gaming goodness.

We don't aim for major tourneys or want to lock you into a schedule of events that inhibit you (although we do have a very fun event lined up for this year - See below).

BorderCon really wants you to set your own agenda. It's an event where you can play that 6 hour epic Game of Thrones (as happened last year), or take on a whacky Euro challenge like playing every Power grid Board (that happened too).

One year we had a group play a game with a pal in South Africa via Skype...very cool.

But most people do the normal thing and simply play a stack of games with a whole bunch of people and make some new friends along the way.

How to Best Use this GeekList

What follows is a series of GeekList items that will try to outline the event as best as we can and help you prepare for what will be a great weekend.

If you haven't already, I recommend subscribing to the BorderCon Guild as any updates will be posted there and any additions to this GeekList will be announced there. By subscribing you will be informed as to when new information is available.

We are also working on a Website for BorderCon so expect to see something in the coming months and a more complete website up in the back part of 2014 to help people prepare for BorderCon 2015!

Ok on with the show...

What and Where is BorderCon?

I've probably covered what our event is all about in the Header this year...but to summarise it is about a relaxed gaming environment where you can play anything and everything with those that you bring or with new folks that you meet.

No one genre of game really dominates the event...BorderCon has everything from Euros to Thematic Games an everything in between.

We are located on the border of NSW and Victoria, making our location nice and central for many people.

Our Aim is Simple

To see as many people and games at tables as possible and smiles on faces. Anything else beyond that is a bonus.

This year the key information is as follows -

Dates

Friday the 6th of June to Monday the 9th of June

Venue

Hume Inn Motel, Albury

Contact - Ph: (6021 2733), E-mail: (enquiries@humeinn.com.au), Website: http://www.humeinn.com.au/contact

The Hume Inn as of yesterday only have 1 room left for the Friday night, the rest of the hotel is completely booked out for the remainder of the event. But don't fear as there are several hotels within a 5 minute walk of the event. We will post their details in a List Item below.

Entry

$10 per person (whether that be for 1 day or the entire weekend)

Entry: Family Deal

$20 per family (up to 2 parents and 3 children)

This will be the last year that we will collect entry at the door. We are working towards a booking system ready to go for 2015 and beyond.

Times

Doors open on the Friday at 4pm officially and we close up at 1pm on the Monday. Closing time will be 1am each night, perhaps slightly later on the Saturday Night.

Games

Most people bring a tub of games with them and the function room has some space for these to be left against the walls. We do recommend clearly labeling your tubs with your name. Given limited space some people prefer to leave their games in their room and bring up the 3-4 that they are likely to play in a given period.

In a typical year there would easily be upwards of 500+ different titles at BorderCon each year and most people are happy to welcome in new players and teach them a game. We do not have a dedicated Games Library but...

Etiquette

Many gamers are only too happy to allow other people to play one of their games if they are free. It is nice if you can find the person and ask them if it is ok to play something and of course it is only good manners to pack up the game in the manner you found it and return it to the correct box when you are finished.

It is generally good etiquette also to place drinks on the floor beside you instead of on the table...especially if the game is not yours and you are not sure how cool the owner would be with it.

Who is Behind BorderCon?

BorderCon (in its current format) has a history that essentially goes back to the very first Australian Games Expo (as it was called then) back in 2006. The name itself was used even earlier than that when the Con was largely a Role-Playing event.

For many years it was run with the financial backing of the local Albury-Wodonga Games Club, BorderGames.

The club in that form is no longer but 3 members from those days now run BorderCon. I could not hope to get this up and running every year without the support of these two gents -

Venue

Our host for the event is the Hume Inn Motel as it has been for many years. All gaming takes place in the upstairs Function Room, which can hold about 120 people comfortably.

As mentioned earlier the hotel is all but booked out and 95+% of those rooms are taken by gamers - so the whole venue is essentially a Gamers Hotel for the weekend.

For first time attendees it should be noted that the venue is not perfect...it has a few rough edges but they look to improve it from year to year just a little and at this stage the price is right for us.

Bar

The Hume Inn has a fully serviced bar and we will have dedicated bar staff on from 12pm till 12am on both Saturday and Sunday. The local crew look after the bar in other times.

There will be a range of beveridges to choose from including alcohol and non-alcoholic options. We also offer a range of snacks and treats to keep those brains up to the task of strategising and planning your way to victory. Mwahahahaha!

If you would like a certain drink or food choice, or loved something from past years please add a comment below. If you like someone's selection please thumb their comment and we will do our best to cater to the most popular choices.

We make no promises however...devil

Kid's Corner

This year we will be dedicating a corner of the upstairs stage to some bean bags so any children (mine included) can chill out with their iPads and iPods and get to know one another.

Many children play games frequently though (as do families together of course) and last year it was great to see those that have been coming for a few years actually teaching each other games that they knew. Very Cool stuff. We will have a couple of tables dedicated to the Kid's Corner so they have a space too.

Services - We do supply a microwave for those that would like to heat anything up and we have the capacity for tea and coffee as well, in case you like to bring something specialised from home. Otherwise we suggest using the restaurant downstairs...

Bonetti's Restaurant

On the ground floor the Hume Inn now has Bonnetti's. They are an excellent option for tea and coffee and lunch options such as sandwiches and pizza.

Albury Bakery

Right next to the Hume Inn is the Albury Bakery. We are currently in negotiations to have them open between certain times on the Saturday and they may also open on the Sunday if demand is high. More information to follow.

The Albury Bakery came 2nd in the Bakers Association of Australia Awards for 2013, missing out on top spot by half a point!!!

I'm looking forward to trying them out.

I love this part of the List as we all get to see who is coming (from BGG anyway) as your Avatars all line up like little soldiers.

It's always a bit of fun to see which parts of Australia are represented and from how far away our guests travel.

Simply drop a comment that you'll be attending and I'll get your little faces up here in lights - and perhaps other attendees will be delighted to see that you will be there as well.

New Beginnings

This year we are going with a different angle on food - we are going to provide a list of some 20 restaurants that offer a range of cuisines and provide all contact details so you can select what you would like to eat for dinner each night and make your own bookings.

Bookings will be essential though as we share the weekend with the Winery Walkabout Festival, which attracts 15,000 people each year to the area.

It was once tradition to do a big dinner at Taco Bills (Mexican) and some gamers still like that function. I am sure that someone in the comments below will mention it and offer to be contacted if you would like to be a part of it.

Keep your eye on this space as we add restaurants...

For lunches there is Bonetti's downstairs and the Albury Bakery next door, a McDonalds within 5 minutes walking distance and a KFC and Hungry Jacks within a 2-minute car drive if that is all you are after.

Dean Street will be mentioned many times in the list of Restuarants below. Dean Street is a 1 minute drive from the Hume Inn and a 10-15 minute walk.

Friday Night Pizza

There has been something of a tradition in past years to do a big pizza order but it has been getting a little tricky in recent times. This year we will avoid the mass ordering as it is really too hard to please everyone and we don't want anyone to be disappointed.

Instead we will have brochures for 4-5 different Pizza Places, which will allow you to order what you want and at a time of your choosing.

Saturday and Sunday Morning Breakfast

If you would prefer to attend breakfast with a small group and get to know a few people, this guy...

Announcing This Year's Charity Organisation

Every year a major part of BorderCon is the Charity Raffle.

Every year we aim to raise around $2000 (last year we raised $2,500) to help support a worthy cause. Gamers are very generous people and I think many that attend go home with not only a fun experience in the memory bank, but also the pride that they gave something back as well.

Thank you to the many people who mailed me with suggestions. They were all worthy causes but this year we have selected -

Haemophilia Foundation Australia

Not only is this a worthy charity that does not get much exposure, but again we are looking after one of our own that has a young family member with the condition. We have been asked to keep the person and family in question anonymous this year and we are happy to respect their wishes.

They will be in attendance this year as they have been for many BorderCon's over the years.

In Return

So the Charity Raffle involves buying raffle tickets. They are $5 each, 5 for $20 dollars or 30 for $100. All money goes to the charity of choice and we 'down meeple and fists full of dice' for 30 minutes on Sunday at 12:00pm to conduct the prize draw.

Tickets are sold regularly over the course of the weekend.

Prize Draw you say???

Well yes - We have an extensive table of games and related prizes that can be won. Over $1000 in brand new games are donated by numerous retailers and wholesalers from around the country.

I Want to Do More!

Why sure you can - We welcome any donations to the prize table whether they be games (new or used), home made gaming accessories or other.

If you like to travel out of town and return home with a new shiny game or two, then you may well like to check out the Unhalfbricking.com stand that Julian brings every year to BorderCon.

He has some of the best prices around and some of those titles that may be a wee bit hard to find elsewhere too.

Julian may have some instructions in a comment below regarding letting him know what you might be after so he can stock accordingly.

In avatar form he looks a little like this -

Maths Trade

As always the Aussie Mid-Year Maths Trade will take place in the month leading up to BorderCon, allowing attendees to potentially swap games and make the most of trade mules from various states.

I will have more on this as the Math Trade Gurus set dates and the like.

For those unaware, the Math Trade normally takes place in April-May.

And the Math Trade is up -

Aussie Mid Year MT Thread

But it is a shorter lead-in time than normal so get organised ASAP and add to the list.

There will be a prize for the best looking Luchador Wrestling Mask worn for the event!!! (bought or made)

***

Get Ready to Roll-ble!

Luchador Mexican Wrestling (LMW) is going to the Border!

This year BackSpindle and myself are proud to present the BorderCon Tag-Team Tournament.

Luchador! is a quick dice game where the objective is to KO or Pin your opponents rolling die. Every match last between 5 to 10 mins. This is an elimination tournament, which means if your team loses, you are out, if you team win you go to next to phase until there is only one tag team left. Depending on the number of entrants, this is how the tournament is going to be set up. All teams will be drawn and arrange in matches to compete for the BorderCon Tag Team Championship and a copy of the game Luchador! for each member of the winning Tag Team.

Condition for Entry:

1. Gold coin donation for the charity nominated by the BorderCon organisers.
2. A wrestler name. Use your imagination or feel free to use the online Mexican Wrestler Name Generator (Warning, check on an English-Spanish translator the meaning of your name, you might not like it)
3. A Tag Team Name. Preferable Boardgame related like the Elecktros, Puerto Ricans, Feld Fan's, or whatever your favourite board game is.
4. Have fun!

Note: Don't worry if you can find a tag team partner, we find you a partner the day of the event.

Parents-Children Tag Teams are highly encourage.

Saturday afternoon seems to best time for the tournament, but official time will be announced closer to BorderCon.

And don't forget to trash talk (in accordance to BGG forums rules) to intimidate your opponents!

Post your entries as comment below or geekmail me.

better half Lyn that she would like to run another 40 Days Around the World event this year at BorderCon.

I had a blast with this a few years back so Annie and I are already in if there is enough interest.

It involves combining 4 of the 10 Days in...series to create a world map and a total of 40 countries must be visited in order to take the win.

It is an all-in kind of deal as you need to commit a good 2-3 hours to pulling it off - but it is worth the journey and a few laughs along the way.

If you are interested drop a comment below this item to secure your place and I'm sure we'll here more as to when it will be held. Often though we simply get together Friday night or Saturday morning and lock in a time.

Ok we all love to wax lyrical about what we'd love to play.

It gives people an idea of what to bring and some people even get groups organised for those longer games.

So head on over to this companion list and have at it.

Just remember that all good plans can sometimes not eventuate...whistle

Okay we have essentially locked in the drink options. They will be as follows :-

Carlton Draught

Carlton Dry

Corona

Cascade Light

Tooheys Old

Strongbow Cider

Crown Lager

Wine - Can be bought from the restaurant Bonetti's and brought up to the gaming room.

Water

Various Soft Drinks

We recognise that this list won't please everyone...

Snacks

We will also have some small sweet treats and apples, bananas and mandarines for the more health conscious.

Any feedback is welcome in the event that we have missed something totally obvious.

Hi everyone,

It's 5:11am Wednesday morning and I've crawled out of bed to try and give Annie some sleep.

It would appear that my annual respiratory illness hit me over the weekend and it doesn't appear to be getting any better.

I had Monday off work, tried to do the soldier thing yesterday and went but look likely to call in again today (sorry boss).

I'm facing the reality that I may not be able to attend BorderCon or at least large chunks of it as I'm pretty sure these coughs of mine would be enough to put all of you off.

We are fairly sure it isn't contagious and restricted to respiratory (seasonal asthma?) but at this stage I may at best be restricted to limited hours of attendance and forced to leave if the coughing starts up.

This sucks to say the least as this normally hits around April to early May and I have it under control by BorderCon. This year not so lucky.

Hopefully I'm being a drama queen and things will right themselves by Friday but at this point I'm not sure.

The local team is pretty thin on the ground to run things with one mate having exams to prepare for the 2 days after BorderCon but I'm sure they will manage.

Safe travels everyone and I hope to see you for as much of BorderCon as I can. Sniff...Sniff...

For all those mules and good folk who are bringing Math Trade titles I will hopefully be able to fin the space for a table where we can simply pop these for easy handover and collection.

Of course it's not as nice as handing it over in person but that can be tricky at times.

If you do make use of the table, please make sure the games are well labelled or the box with the title(s) in is well labelled.

And a final shout out to drive safe over the next day or two and get to us in one piece.

Can't wait for the weekend to start, to see so many friendly faces, meet new ones and see some great new games (I really have fallen behind the cult of the new over the last 5 years).

Tonight we set up the room and hopefully it will look different again to previous years as we are looking to replace all (if not most) of those big wooden tables to increase the floor space. I won't be doing any heavy lifting this year...he he suckers. whistle

Anyone able to procure me some new lungs and is up for a Live Action Role-Play of Operation would be forever in my debt...but I must say things are looking a lot better today than yesterday.

The future for BorderCon may or may not look different in the years ahead.

This year we plan to use a very simple survey of only 3-4 questions to collect some data as we look to go forward.

What we would like to know is your preference on our event - sizing and location, the feel and potentially a bracket figure on how much you spend in the town as a means to whack the Albury City Council over the head with it if we need to.

We will have a dedicated website up by August of this year in preparation for 2015's planning and communication. From 2015 we will also be using an online pre-booking sytem.

If you have any ideas, comments or concerns please send me a private Geekmail.
