I love lists, I always read every Top 10/100 list I can get my hands on. After 3 years of boardgaming as my main hobby I wanted to do my own list. Also I want to know which games I really like from each year as this topic frequently pops up with my geek friends. I chose 2010 as a starting point because that was the year I really saw how many boardgames were out there (the year I joined the geek ).

The idea is to keep this geeklist updated as there are still many games of 2010 that I have not played yet. It was somewhat hard to get boardgames in my country that year, but now I can get my hands in practically any game I want .

I will list my current Top Ten games from 2010 as well as any game that has a rating equal or superior to 7.0. As I’m lazy, I will recycle the comments I have already done in each game. To determine if a game was published in 2010, I used the advanced search feature of the geek. To me, a 2010 game is a 2010 game even if it was published on December 31 at 11:59 P.M in a far corner of the Earth.

This is for my personal use, but any feedback is (encouraged) welcome.

If you want to see all my previous Top Ten lists you can go here.

2013-08-20

Initial Rating: 5.0 (September 2012)

At first I was un impressed with this game, however with many more plays, I have changed my mind and now I appreciate it. The gameplay is rather short and the rules are easy to grasp, it has a lot of unwanted luck in the plague tokens, but I have found that you have room for some strategy. It is rather light but I enjoy it. Love the theme .

This is a very good area control game, I really like that it is not so easy to attack the leader as most games of its kind.

SPOILER ALERT

I’m worried about the power level of the ”no character” strategy, and that is the main reason this is not a 7.0 in my book. I read about a variant that you are obliged to pick a character if you don’t have one. I will play with this variant soon. Still I played a good 30 games before I figured it out.

This is a game I, probably, will buy in the near future. For now I like it a lot, but after 30+ plays, it really needs an expansion.

Current Rating: 6.5

I finally got to play this game face to face. It plays VERY quickly and the big character cards are nice to have. I´m upgrading its rating due to this.

Initial Rating: 7.0 (October 2014)

What a surprising party/reaction game. Very reminiscent of Snorta and Tarantel Tango but with words! I really liked it. VERY easy to teach and it has a short playtime so I think I will play it a lot in the future. In every duel, the answers are generally easy, but as it a race, it is very fun when a player blurts out wrong answers due to time pressure (for example I was trying to say Golden Gate and said Watergate instead). Lots of laughs.

Really like how the wild cards work making it harder to find if you have to duel or not.

I don’t have anything bad to say about Anomia. The language barrier is an issue with some of my friends, we can only play it when all the players know English, if not the game can be very unfair. I would love to have an Spanish version of the game.

Bottom line, a fun party game and a keeper in my game collection.

One of 2010´s favorites.

Initial Rating: 9.0 (June 2011)

Brilliant game, with more plays I believe it will crack my top 10 of favorite games.
This gem has the best aspects from 2 great games, Agricola (worker placement) and El Grande (Area control) creating a truly marvelous game.

The good: The game is a little complex (which I love) thus it requires a deep strategy, despite that the game runs smoothly and completely in synch with the theme (which is great). Each species has one key advantage making each game different. The game is so well designed that everything is interrelated in the game; every choice counts and has a deep impact in in your survival. Totally absorbing.

The bad: The long play time makes hard for this game to hit the table more often. The components serve their purpose but I think they could have been prettier.

In conclusion a truly gamer´s game and a must have for me.

Current Rating: 9.0

2014-02-11

Sadly, I haven’t played Dominant Species as much as I wanted to. I still think this is a great game and won’t say no to a play of this. The game has a lot of stuff going on, very deep and meaty. You don’t even feel the time when playing this so the long play time doesn’t bug me. A truly gem and the game that put Chad Jensen in my radar.

Current Rating: 9.0

2015-09-11

After more plays I’m enjoying Dominant Species less and less. I have changed a lot during these years and I no longer enjoy the “take that” mechanism and Dominant Species has it in spades. Most players attack the perceived leader but sometimes they attack the weakest one as well because the retaliation is less dangerous.

With 6 players the game is too slow for me. I think its sweet spot is 4 players.

I still recognize that Dominant Species is a solid game and it is still among my favorite games, but it has fallen a lot for me.

One of 2010 favorites.

NUMBER 7 of 2010 Previously Number 6

2016-01-31

Initial Rating: 7.0 (January 2016)

Uwe Rosenberg is one of my favorite game designers. I always buy his games without knowing anything more about them, so I was very keen to play Merkator. It is a good Euro game.

The game components are very nice and, when assembled, the game looks gorgeous. The rules are easy to explain, you can do it under 16 minutes. The art looks boring (the cover is particularly guilty of this, it seems outdated but it is a 2010 game).

It offers some interesting decisions (which contract to sell, where to travel, should I accompany the current player, what building to get, how many resources of each kind?). Deciding how to spend your time is also great fun.

I think it is best as a 3 player game, with 4 players the downtime is excessive for me. It lends itself to analysis paralysis.

There are some random elements in the game (the buildings, how the contracts appear, the random good you lose at the end of each timeline) but in general I feel I have a lot of control so I´m not bothered by the luck factor (yet).

I just found out there are some minor translation issues in the rulebook (a very minor quibble), but there is a translation error in at least one card. That mistake broke the card. I don’t remember the name but if you build that building you get points for every good in your storage, the correct version is that you get points for every KIND of good in your storage. In our game, the player won had that card and I have told in previous games the same situation arose.

Bottom line, I almost never like pickup and deliver games, but I liked this one. It feels different than most Rosenberg´s games. The rules are very easy to explain, but it features meaty decisions. I want to play it again soon.

One of 2010´s favorites.

Initial Rating: 8.0 (June 2011)

I needed to play this badly, after all Dungeon Twister is my favorite game and I wanted to play the last game designed by Christophe Boelinger. I´m glad I did. The bits are gorgeous and the game has a lot of them, miniatures, cards and map tiles all top quality. The game is very complex, the rules are easy to learn due to the fact that you are introduced to them by stages but it has a steep learning curve, as in Dungeon Twister experience matters A LOT!

The only down for me is the very looong setup time, in my second game we took more time building the map than playing the game . I really wish that the map tiles were numbered a la Gears of War, this would simplify the map building considerably.

For me this is a 2 player game, more than that and the downtime can be more than I´m willing to endure, but I need to try it at least once its multiplayer mode.

It shows a lot of work has gone into the game, I love all the details and I have played only twice. Kudos Mr. Boelinger, I believe this game will continue to raise in my ratings and I would to play it again.

What a game, with each play I rate it higher, it has so many options I just love it.

Current Rating 9.0

2014-02-11

I want to play this game a lot more, but the fact that it is a medium-heavy 2 player game doesn’t make it easy to get to the table. I need to find a partner to deeply explore this game. I’m downgrading its rating because nowadays I’m much more harsh with my ratings, still I think this is a great game, but a 9.0 rating seems a little excessive. Still I love it and plan to buy it in the future.

For now, I won’t say no to a game of Earth Reborn (furthermore if my opponent sets up the game devil).

Current Rating: 7.5

Previously Number 9

2014-07-07

Initial Rating: 7.0 (July 2014)

Wallace did it again. London is a good card game and it has a lot of potential to go even higher in my personal ratings. Truth to be told, I didn’t want to play London (not sure why) but I’m glad I did. London is (relatively) easy to teach but has a lot of meaty and interesting decisions each turn (which cards to build, how many buildings in a row, which card do I use to pay, should I get a loan? Should I build in the city? When should I run the city and get poverty?).

Money is very tight in this game, so knowing when you should stop building or take a loan to build is not a trivial decision.

The game board is very pretty and functional. The poverty concept is great and it functions as another layer you have to consider when thinking about your moves.

When I played London, I felt I was playing Race for the Galaxy. I meant that in the sense that you have to choose which cards to play and which cards to spend, these cards can be then used by your opponents and you again, very tense, very hard. It is great!

I kind of like the theme, but I didn’t feel it much in the game.

I think it is best played with 3 players, with more the downtime begins to be too much for me.

In conclusion, at the present I don’t have anything bad to say about this game. I want to play more soon and I wonder why I haven’t heard much about it.

Pret a Porter is a medium-heavy economic worker placement game. I really like it. This is the first game my GF has asked me to buy , at first I thought the theme wasn’t for me but, all things considered, I prefer the fashion theme over Agricola´s or Puerto Rico´s.

You have only 2 months (6 plays) before each Fashion show so you have lots of tough decisions devil and as you know what the other players are doing you can try to screw them. I think the game is highly strategic as you know from the beginning where will be all the fashion shows and it has a low luck factor IF you are already familiar with the cards (otherwise the luck factor increases). A very tight game indeed.

On the bad side, the rules are awfully written, also the $10 bills are way too similar to the $100 bills so it is very easy to make a mistake with this. It would have been a nice thematic touch if you knew what the fabrics were (for example egyptian silk, cotton, etc.).

I recommend It.

Current Rating: 8.0

2012-10-08

I have played Pret a Porter two more times. As I´m trying to get my ratings according to the BGG rating guide, I’m downgrading Pret a Porter`s rating to a 7.0. The reasons are 1. The game is too long for what it offers with the full complement of players, I don’t think I will play with 4 players again, I think its sweet spot is 3 players. 2. I usually want to play it but I don’t want to play it at all game sessions. 3. The $100 and $50 bills are too similar to the $10 and $5 counterparts, this has led to critical mistakes in our games.

However I still think it is a very good game with a fresh and different theme.

I still recommend It

Current Rating: 7.0

2014-02-11

I still like Pret a Porter a lot today. It has been difficult to get this to the table due to its theme. A friend even refused to play this after he found out it was about fashion shows, unbelievable!

I will do an effort to play this more often.

Initial Rating : 7.5 (April 2012)

Best dice game I have played, light-years better than Kingsburg and Alien Frontiers. Surprisingly Troyes has a very low luck factor due to the dice themselves as you can buy them from your opponents, the event and activity cards add to the randomness but in this case I like it very much.

The playtime is generally short, you have lots of interesting decisions and, as the activity cards change from game to game, it has great replayability.

The dice mechanic is brilliant and it is the first time it really excites me to play with dice in an strategy game .

Perhaps its greatest weakness is that it seems the game gives an unfair advantage to the first and second player as they are always assured to begin 2 rounds. I´m not sure about that but I plan to play many more times to review this point.

For now I love the game and I can´t wait to play it again.

Current Rating: 8.0

2013-10-08

I still like Troyes a lot, however now I don’t want to play it as often as before, so I’m downgrading its rating to 7.5. This way it matches my feelings for the game with the BGG recommendation rating system. I think Troyes is a good game that I’m usually willing to play.

In my inner gamer self, I have always preferred to play heavy and complex games with low luck, and Vihnos meets those criteria.

It is somewhat hard to teach as it has many rules, but the game flows very naturally and in my opinion is very well done.

Have in mind I have only played it ONCE, but it appears that there is many ways to get VPs in the game and also there is a lot of strategies to explore. It has plenty of hard decisions and thus it maintains the tension during the game. While I don´t particularly like the theme, I can see why many of my friends like it so much. What I like is that from my point of view, the theme and mechanics are very well meshed and work perfectly together.

It has a rather long play time but as you are so immersed in the game you don´t feel it.

The ONE thing I didn´t like is that IMO you have too many barrels to invest, you can use and block some of the spots that give high VPs since the beginning of the game and it won´t hurt you a bit.

Current Rating: 8.5

2014-02-11

After another play, I still like Vinhos a lot, very meaty game with lots of interesting decisions. After playing it, I want to try other Vital Lacerda designs (CO2) and now he is in my radar.

Bottom line, I won’t say no to a game of Vinhos and I want to buy the game. Very good game.

Current Rating: 8.0

So that`s it . My current 2010 Top Ten games. There are other games I have played and enjoyed, but they are outside my current Top Ten list. Still if I currently rate the game a 7.0 or better, I will list it below this item as honorable mentions.

They continue in order of relevance to me, that is, the first item to appear is the Number 11 of 2010 and so on. I won’t write the numbers in the header so I won’t have to fix all the items each time a new great game pops up in my 2010 list.

Initial Rating: 7.5 (August 2011)

I love climbing games, so I like Haggis. I prefer to play this over Tichu, although Tichu has the potential to go up in my ratings. I prefer to play it with 2 but it is also great with 3 players (but it adds more luck, and possibly kingmaking situations). The cards are of good quality and, in general, Haggis is a solid game.

The rules are (relatively), simple but the gameplay has a lot of depth. I also like that you begin each hand with 3 jokers allowing for more strategic plays/bombs.

The game can be a tad long if you play for 350 points, most of my games have been in the short format game (250 points).

If you like climbing games, I believe you will like Haggis, plus it is really cheap.

In conclusion, Haggis is a must have for me. I’m downgrading its rating so it matches my feelings with the BGG rating system. Haggis is a good game that I’m usually willing to play

NEW ENTRY

2016-01-13

Initial Rating: N/A (September 2013)

So far I have only played the game online but I want to play it face to face before rating it. To that end I bought the game and I plan to play it soon.

The insert of the game is useless.

Current Rating: N/A

Initial Rating: 7.0 (February 2017)

I finally played Glen more face to face. I have previously played a couple of times online and, although I understood the core mechanism of the game, I had some holes in the rules. I always lost my games and I didn’t know why. A friend explained the game to me and it turned out the biggest you village the more points you will lose at the end .

I bought the game on 2015 and I finally played it. In general I dislike tile laying games, but I enjoyed Glen More.

The rules are pretty easy to teach, you can do it under 10 minutes. The hardest are the special tiles but you can explain them as they appear. The game moves at a fast pace, playtime is around 60 minutes.

The game´s components are very flimsy, furthermore, it was a very expensive game, I had to import from Germany as it was out of print in America. The art is ok, but the tiles have tiny text on them that isn’t easy to read.

Best with 4 fast players, with more I begin to feel the downtime.

Ok theme, but it doesn’t excite me (that’s ok for an Euro game). In any case it is very thin.

The game´s decisions are very interesting (namely, which tile to take, where to put it, how to move your meeples inside your village and how far to jump ahead in the turn order track). Going last all the time seems great, but, as I wrote before, if you take a lot more tiles that your opponents, at the end of the game you will lose a lot of points, so you have to strike a balance between opportunistic turn order and village size, I love this (and that’s missing from Kraftwagen, a game that uses the same mechanism but do not penalize taking a lot of extra actions). Glen More is more deep that I initially thought.

I also enjoy the spatial element of building your village. It seems the game has many paths to victory, but I need more plays to verify this point.

Bottom line, Glen More is a good Euro game and a solid 7.0 to me. It plays very fast for a game of this kind and I want to explore it further. It is a keeper in my game collection. I know a second edition of the game is coming, but I’m not sure if I will get it, time will tell.

One of 2010 favorites.

THIS IS ONLY FOR IKEBANA

2012-02-01

Ikebana

Initial Rating: 8.0 (April 2011)

So simple, so fun. I really like this gem, it is a very light game but one I really enjoy. I like this more than Hanabi, easy to teach, short gameplay, it has lots of luck but in a short game like this I don´t really care.

Current Rating: 8.0

2014-02-11

I still enjoy this little game, very fun game to open or end the game night. For me Ikebana is now a solid 7.0 (still superior to Hanabi by a bit). This is a game I enjoy a lot and would play often. Lots of interesting decisions (risk management) in a very short timeframe.

Initial Rating: 8.0 (2012 December)

Great trivia game. Easy to teach, scales well, offers loads of fun and it has a short playtime. I really like that Timeline plays so quick so I don´t have issues with the luck factor. This game can be a powerful educational tool. The art is so well done you don’t need to read the card to know what it depicts, great for players who doesn’t know English (or French as I have this edition).

On the bad side, if you play the game enough times you will encounter the replayability factor begins to go down as it is easy to memorize the dates, so I will buy expansions to compensate for this, but this is a game that cannot be played constantly. Also the initial player has a huge advantage but I try to not let this bug me that much.

Current Rating: 8.0

2012-09-10

This game have been a success every time I have played it in a game night. It has a lot more plays in it that I initially thought, it is not as easy to memorize all the dates. However I already bought the Events expansion .

As I never read the rules (my copy is in French) it appears the first player has not a big advantage as I thought. I believe all the players have to have the same amount of rounds (I wasn’t playing it like this). Still the first player has an advantage as there are fewer cards on the timeline.

A great game.

Current Rating: 8.0

2014-02-11

As I’m trying to correct/unify all my ratings, I cannot continue to give this an 8.0. I still think this is a good game and I plan to play it a lot it more (now I have all the expansions), however, I’m downgrading its rating so it matches my feelings with BGG recommendation rating system.

Initial Rating: 8.5 (April 2012)

Some friends have told me negative things about the game so it took me nearly a year to play it, I was sure it was going to be a very bad game. Boy I was very surprised!! Civilization is a great game, I just upgraded the rating to a 9.0 and I can´t wait to play it again.

As a fan of the computer games, I feel the board game is a very good implementation of the game system, it can take a while to play but the game flows so quickly you don`t feel the time. I enjoy it immensely.

The game has a lot of replayability because each time you play with different tiles (and different orientation), different civilizations, different technologies etc. It has a medium luck factor due to the units and cultural cards but it doesn´t bother me, perhaps the combat is the hardest concept to understand but not so hard.

All in all a great game and a must buy for me.

Right now it is my second favorite civilization game after Through the Ages.

Current Rating: 9.0

2013-06-11

I’m downgrading its rating, as Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game is no longer a game I would like to play every time, also I’m trying “to obey” the BGG recommendation system, so Civilization is a good game that I’m willing to play, just not every time. Still I think this is a very good to great game.

Perhaps it is best enjoyed with 3 players, as with four the down time can be excessive if a player is somewhat slow.

Current Rating: 7.0

2014-02-11

Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game continues to be my second favorite civilization board game, for a moment there many friends told me they preferred Clash of Cultures over this one but after playing both games, I can say Civilization is the better game by a mile, in fact, I refuse to play Clash of Cultures again, awful game for me.

I owned this and sold it because I needed the cash, but this is a game I would buy (with its expansions) in the future.

Current Rating: 7.0

2018-01-07

It´s been years since I last played Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game and in all this time, my desire to play the game has been slowly decreasing. Now, I prefer much more to play Euro games so I don’t think I will buy it. Due to this, I’m decreasing once more its rating.

Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game is no longer among my favorite games of 2010.

Initial Rating: 8.5 (September 2012)

I really like Runewars, it is perhaps the best game I have played in the Terrinoth realm . Konieczka has designed some very good games.

It is a big game with lots of cool components which I really love. Also, the art is gorgeous. The game can be long (my plays have been 6 hours and 4 hours) but as I´m immersed in it I don’t mind, and for the same reason, I didn’t feel any downtime. For me, it is very reminiscent of Twilight Imperium (I still prefer TI3). It has a lot of luck, but in most situations you can react to it so I´m not bothered by it. I must confess it bothers me a bit when we draw the Special goals and the heroes missions. It seems the luck of the draw can offer a lot of advantage to some players, however the game is very good so I don’t think much about this.

The rules are a 40 pages monstrosity, but I enjoyed reading them I must be a masochist. The game is not really that hard but it does have a lot of rules so the game is not for the casual gamer.

The gameplay is great, you have a lot to consider and the decisions always are hard, you can only play 4 cards per year so you always feel the tension in your decisions. The game has a lot of alliances, betrayals and “take that” moments. devil It has resource management, control area and lots and lots of battles.

The battle system is very well done, it eliminated dice and added the fate card deck. I´m not sure if I would have preferred dice but I still like it a lot.

I feel the heroes don’t play a critical role in the game, in my second play we played with the exploration tiles variant which I feel it is a must, otherwise the heroes feel very plain and boring to me and detract from the fun. I will delve further in this point in later plays.

Building the map felt a little like a chore, furthermore if you have to do it again after making some mistake.

In conclusion, Runewars is an epic fantasy game which I enjoy enormously, if you like that kind of thing give it a try.

Current Rating: 8.5

2013-03-04

I’m not sure anymore that the Exploration tiles variant is the way to go. It adds a lot of uncontrollable randomness. Also, I’m downgrading its rating so my feelings are in concordance with the BGG rating system. Still feel this is a very good game, just not one I want to play all the time.

Current Rating: 7.5

2014-02-11

Today, I still like Runewars a lot! It lends itself to epic battles, that we continue to talk about even months after we play them. Good game.

I would like to own it, preferably the first edition as it has the 3D elements. For now, I won’t say no to a (programmed) game of Runewars as this is not a game we can bring casually to our regular game meetings.

Current Rating: 7.0

2018-01-07

It´s been years since I last played Runewars and in all this time, my desire to play the game has been slowly decreasing. Now, I prefer much more to play Euro games so I don’t think I will buy it. Due to this, I’m decreasing once more its rating.

Games with lots of downtime have been (slowly) purged from my game collection. I also don’t enjoy “take that” games anymore so my desire to play Runewars is low.

Runewars is no longer among my favorite games of 2010.

What a surprise game! I really liked it. 4 Monkeys is hilarious to play. I love real time games, and you can even bluff your way out on this one. The game is not as easy as it seems, you need to react quickly as players are competing for the same goal and the game has a short duration so it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Good stuff.

Perhaps, it can go even higher with more plays and I will probably buy it. This is great to play with the family.

Current Rating: 6.5

2014-05-06

With more plays, 4 Monkeys is now a borderline 7.0 in my book. I have no other game like it and every time I have played it, it has been a huge success.

Still not a game to play too often, but I’m glad I bought it. I’m upgrading its rating due to its innovative gameplay and because I love to “cheat” on this game. I prefer to play it with the timer hidden from view.

Current Rating: 7.0

2016-09-08

It took me a long time to play 4 Monkeys again, but I really enjoy this game . Still, I have changed a lot during these past years and I have become much more strict with the rating of my games, so I’m downgrading 4 Monkeys’ rating to one that matches my current feelings for the game with BGG´s rating system.

I still plan to keep the game in my game collection because it is unique!

4 Monkeys is no longer among my favorite games of 2010.

Very simple and quick pattern recognition game, however I really liked it. It can be explained under a minute and play under 10 minutes (perfect for the family or to attract new gamers to our hobby). The game offers lots of laughs in a very short timeframe, every time I have played this we play at least two games in a row.

I suck at it but I like it and I want to buy it. Not a game to play every day, but I can see myself playing this from time to time.

Current Rating: 6.5
