The idea behind these lists is to post what you're currently playing, or just played. It's interesting to see who's playing what, to see if people are playing the same things, and to ask questions that might otherwise be relegated to a forum about a game with the benefit of the responses coming from someone who has it fresh on their mind.

Here's last month's list: What We're Playing - February 2014

I just finished a game of Firefly, using a solitaire Story Card that I created myself, called Beholden to Niska. I am attempting to create a solo scenario that lasts longer than the official one, has more of an adventure theme, while also being more difficult to win.

I think it worked pretty well, although I only obtained a Minor Victory for goal 3. I didn't even reach goal 2 until turn 25 (out of 30), then then just barely!

I have posted the my Solitaire Story Card for Firefly: the Game, along with my Solo House Rules (which can be used with any Firefly solo story card), here:

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1131219/

So, if any of you who play the game wouldn't mind checking out my Story Card and house rules, and giving me some feedback, I'd appreciate it!

Yesterday was role-playing day. One of the players wanted to GM a D&D 3.5 game at epic levels (level 20). 3.5 is not my favorite version of the system. Too many rules and not enough special things you can do. I much prefer 4th. But it was neat to make such a high-level character. However, we played for 4 hours yesterday and it was all one battle. There were some fun points, but most of the time was spent rolling and rolling and rolling dice, and adding up numbers. For example, I made a scout who can shoot from 2-4 arrows in a turn and roll up to nine six-sided dice. After a while, if each arrow was the same, I just rolled once and multiplied by the number of arrows I was shooting. It didn't help that I developed a hunger head-ache near the end because it was going into dinner time. But I am really looking forward to the next time we play so we can get to the role-playing part.

After role-playing, I introduced them to Deadwood Studios USA, the new version I got from the Kickstarter. Everyone enjoyed it, especially since we had 2 actors in the group. There was lots of laughter, but it actually turned out to be a tense game. I'd only ever played it with my husband before and with 2 players, it's not as tense. With 6, boy, it's a lot more fun and dynamic!

Fri, Feb 28

So I spent Thursday evening helping with set-up for GottaCon, then another 8 hours volunteering on Friday. I was at the front desk, helping to push through hundreds of convention-goers. When I was let go at 8:30, I was ready to start gaming!

First up was Eldritch Horror. A friend of mine just bought it there at the con, and let me punch it (wow) and play it. Everyone describes it as a more streamlined Arkham Horror, but I don't think it's that much more streamlined. There's a time limit, so the game can't go on forever, but it's still a pretty fiddly game. I do like how the combat was done though.

The one thing I don't like is that the game was obviously designed with expansions in mind. The game could use a few lot more cards in some of those encounter decks - we went through the research deck 3 times.

And this was it for Friday night/Saturday morning gaming. I was surprisingly awake still, but Darin was just about asleep on his feet.

First up Saturday morning was Rampage. I wasn't initially planning to bring this one, but I figured the smaller free-play room would do, especially if it wasn't too full. We taught the game to the friend staying with us, and he loved it.

We found later that we'd lost one meeple, and I was a little upset, but figured I'd just raid Carcassonne for one. But we got lucky - someone found it and returned it to the game library so I got it back later.

I don't actually remember where in the line-up this one was. It might have been before Suburbia, or maybe after. But it was earlier in the day. Come to think of it, I think this was before Suburbia, before the 4th player for Suburbia showed up.

I taught this one to the friend playing with us. He's a big Chvatil fan but had never played it. He said it felt suitably Chvatil-like (brain burny).

Small World was up next. A friend of mine had seen it on Table Top but never played it, and we recruited a third player - someone who was just looking for a game to play. He also had never played. I came in second, just behind my friend.

This is the kind of game I can play once in a while, but not too frequently.

After Rampage we moved to the table behind us to try a prototype copy of Kingdom Bots. This game isn't in the BGG database (not a good sign for their KS), but you can check it out here on Kickstarter.

I actually quite enjoyed this game - an area control game set far in the future (on a map based on the geography of Greater Vancouver laugh). A bit of a Risk feel, some combat/dice stuff that reminded me of Hero Quest, some role selection, and a little bit of resource management. It's a game that definitely needs to be played with 4 though, suffering from the same problems that most dudes-on-a-map games have at 3 players - 2 players fight while the third stays out of the way and quietly pulls ahead.

edit: game has been added to BGG database so I updated the post.

After Kingdom Bots, I moved jumped into a game of Castles of Burgundy that my brother and a friend were just setting up. Another friend showed up just as we were getting ready to start so it ended up being a 4 player game.

I'd played this once before, winning that game. I came in third today, 1 point behind second and 16 points behind first. My brother - the only new player - was quite far back in last.

I don't mind playing this game, and will probably play if someone else wants to, but I don't think I'd ever seek it out and ask to play it. It's a bit bland, and feels like it might get same-y.

The last game of the con for me was one from a local game designer called The Goods. They ran a successful Kickstarter last year and the game will be on sale in April.

This was a really neat little resource management game. Everyone is collecting resources and using them to construct buildings that can be used to turn them into different resources and so on. The buildings are all worth points at the end of the game, as are some of the harder-to-get resources. We played a shortened (fewer cards) 4 player game, and I tied for second after taking a monopoly on energy.

I might consider buying this at a later date. Despite the convention discount, I didn't buy it today because I'd already spent a bunch of money and it's not a game Darin would play. He might try it once, but it's highly unlikely he'll enjoy it.

So overall, GottaCon was amazing!

GottaCon is a broad-spectrum gaming Con, with everyone from board games to tabletop minis to PC games to RPGs to TCGs and everything in between. This year had a D&D improv show, a nerdy burlesque show, a costume contest & party, a media event, video game industry panels for high school students, some celebrity RPG GMs, and more.

This was our 4th year attending, and our third year volunteering. The convention itself is in it's 6th year, and finally got the partnerships & sponsorships needed to afford the move downtown to the main conference centre. They topped 3000 attendees this year, which is a huge increase over last year.

We're eventually going to move on to the second expansion, which is on my 10x10 list, so we've been spending a bit of time this past week revisiting the base game and this first expansion. We played this three times on Saturday. Unfortunately I was really stressed out from unrelated things, and it turns out that wildly swingy luck-based games do not work well in that situation—I ended up really grumpy as nothing worked out for me. It was a good choice to move on to Suburbia, where I felt satisfied with my accomplishments despite losing all six games.

On the whole, though, I really like both Innovation and this expansion. They'll definitely be getting much more playtime in the future.

Well, we've finished one of our games in our 10x10 challenge, it only took two months.

Not much more for me to say about it, but being that it's finished I do hope to write up a bit of a review for it sometime this week.

The two games we played this weekend really couldn't have been more different. I used the online randomizer to set up both games and we won, that doesn't seem to happen all that often for us with random setups.

First game was kind of an uneventful play, we ended up beating the Red Skull fairly quickly even though both decks seemed slow to develop, but man, I love Professor X's rare card, especially if you combine it with certain villains that you defeat.

Second game was a bit more exciting, not for me mind you, but for my wife who had the Domino/Cable combination working to perfection. She had a couple turns with over 20 attack value and was still able to recruit a decent hero. Me on the other hand, struggled with Cyclops and probably won't pick him up again unless there is another hero out that allows you to draw more cards. My wife one this one 56-17.

We added the Fantastic 4 to the box this weekend as well, and hope to continue playing this with regularity now.

Played this on Sunday.

I picked this up as a good worker placement game that my daughter would maybe be able to enjoy. The ability to use a space that has already been used is the biggest selling point. My daughter, and to a lesser extent, my wife, have played Lords of Waterdeep and their major complaint about it is that they hate when they are blocked off of something that they need, and they don't like to be the aggressors and block others.

I think it went over pretty well, with the exception of going a bit long the first play, my daughter was ready to do something else about midway through the final round. So I think after that first game the speed should be right in the wheelhouse for her, especially if we can get it to the 45 minute range. It really is a game of efficiency, you want to get the most from each placement of your worker/workers each and every time. I liked the scoring mechanic that keeps getting bigger and bigger after each round. Really a fun game.

Everything about the game was great, except the choice of thin cardboard that seems to want to warp pretty substantially, even the tiles are warped a bit. Time to break out the Galaxy Trucker: Anniversary Edition again to flatten some cardboard it seems.

On Saturday, both the local game groups we go to were meeting on the same day, so we had a choice for where to go. Which is tough, since there are great people at both. Since it was snowing, we decided not to drive clear across town to Denver Games. This wound up being a good idea - there was a 100+ car pileup on the highway that we would have been going past. Yikes.

At any rate, Broomfield games was starting late so we only got in a few plays, but it was fun anyway.

First up was Tower of Babel. Excellent older Knizia game. This was a very close game; all four players were within 8 points or so (with scores in the 60s).

Simple game with lots of ways to try to score that keeps everyone involved all the time.

Then we played this light abstract-ish game. Kind of reminds of Hey, That's My Fish!. Move stacks of coffee cups around to form larger stacks, trying to keep your cups on top. Good for what it is, though not really my kind of game.

Amusingly, it wound up as a 3 way tie. The one player who 'lost' was the guy who taught us the game.

We then had 6 players, which is always a bit of awkward number; too big for most games, not quite big enough for a good split.

Chronicle said it played 6, so we tried it. I enjoy Chronicle a lot, but I think 6 players is too many.

Then we did split into two 3s and Phil taught Lisa and I Steam Park. We didn't have time to finish the game (he needed to leave) and so only played four rounds, but it was a lot of fun!

The following morning, I asked Lisa if she wanted to play a game. "Yes, I want to play Steam Park!" Sadly, its all out stock locally.

Sunday we started the new adventure deck and played two games with it. Despite some abysmal rolls (I failed a check needing an 8 while rolling 3D6+D8!) we won both pretty handily.

Second quest, Lisa's two characters each closed a location on their first turns. I declared that while my thief surely COULD close a location on her first turn to, I wanted to find more loot so I wasn't going to.

This has become a staple "over a meal" filler for us. Nice for a light, relatively quick game.
