Welcome to Solitaire Games on Your Table - The March Edition

As the weather (hopefully, finally) begins to warm up, you may be tempted to take those first creaky steps outside, squinting your eyes against the unfamiliar sunlight, maybe even meeting up with long lost gaming groups also just emerging from hibernation.

It is a trick!

Instead, take this time to play more solitaire games, then come back here and tell us all about them!

As usual, you can subscribe to these lists here. I'd also recommend checking out the 1-Player Guild; it was quiet there for a while but recently has just exploded with content.

And now the obligatory "Take Jack's Geekgold" portion of the month.

If you've been sticking with us the past couple of months, you'll have noticed an increase in the number of challenges and competitions that players have been hosting. I love solo games, but I also love competition against humans, so these challenges have been great! And I want to see more of them, and more players playing in them!

To that end, I'm going to donate 30 to the prize pool of every challenge started this month. I'll give it to the person hosting the challenge, and they can divide it up any way they choose to their participants.

You can find challenges throughout the list, and also find them collected here by bikefreak.

Have a great March! I can't wait to see what all you play.

I didn't get much time in February to play this game, but I've got it set up and ready to play on Sunday. I'm looking forward to trying out the bigger boats, as I've only played with the smaller ones.

I've run a couple "tournaments" for this game, but the last one didn't get many hits so instead I'm just going to start hosting Hunters challenges inside the SGoYT lists (which, incidentally, fits with the geekgold giveaway this month).

So here's my challenge for March:

100 to the person who sinks the most tonnage AND survives the whole war. Ties broken by number of ships sunk. To win this you must survive to June 1943.

You can use any boat you want, but you must start in September 1939 (which will limit your boat choices). You must use optional rule 4.5.2. You can use any other optional rules you'd like as long as they only increase the difficulty.

There are errata, living rules, and an FAQ posted online. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the changes and clarifications. This includes a very important errata to the errata changing how close range attacks on escorted ships works.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island

I have been playing this one solo and will probably move on to the next couple of scenarios soon. I am not sure if I like it or not yet. It's kind of its own thing, so it's hard to compare it. The key decision is "how thin can you spread yourself". Some clever ideas, and I think I do like it--just not sure how much.

Band of Brothers: Screaming Eagles

My attempt to complete all the Screaming Eagles scenarios continues with the big board battles. Good armor strategy still eludes me though. Germans got totally wiped out trying to take back this Dutch town. I am integrating the Combat Events rules from Ghost Panzer as well as trying out the new Flanking and Sustained Fire rules to keep things interesting.

made this PNP copy of Ra the Dice Game for me, and I've been playing with the solo variants on BGG. I like it a lot, one of the better dice rollers out there.

Battle Cry

My favorite way to play the C&C games solo is to draw a card off the top of the deck and resolve it for each turn. You lose the hand management and bluffing elements but the battle almost always plays out in an interesting fashion, all I'm looking for in a solo wargame. In this First Battle of Bull Run, the Rebs routed the Yankees and won the day.

Other games I'm looking to play more this month:

Eldritch Horror
Lord of the Rings
RAF

My favorite. The hex map set up with constantly changing terrain is just awesome. I have Phantom Leader, and while the two games are very similar, the hex map with the enemy scattered around just makes this 2x the game of PL.

If you don't have a copy of this fine game, pick it up! Well worth the money.

Note: Tiger Leader, also by DVG, is the process of P250ing. Head on over and pre order it already!

Just picked this game up at Barnes and Noble and I plan on starting in on the first adventure this weekend. If I like it I will buy the other adventures and the bonus characters. Based on the rules I have read so far and an amazing video series by Rahdo, I think I will be making that order.

I also picked up Friday in a math trade last weekend. I have played it once and lost on Level 1. I think I understand now, however, what I need to do to be more successful in the game. I am hoping to get several plays of that in during March.

I am also going to try and get The Hunters: German U-Boats at War, 1939-43 on the table again this month. I played it a few times in February, but with the Fire and Ice convention last weekend and all the prep work I had to do to run five events there I just did not have the time to play this like I wanted to. I am hoping to get at least a career in this month, if not two.

Lastly, Fields of Fire has been calling to me again and I have been working through the rule book. Will be this the month I finally get this on the table and play it?

I've got eight days to get in four plays of Cuba Libre, one play of Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game and two plays of Iliad if I want to complete my No New Games Until 5x5 Challenge! in time to buy something at the Osaka Game Market. I feel like Smokey and the Bandit with a long way to go and a short time to get there!

Edit: One "play" of Cuba Libre down. I ran back through the multiplayer walk through to get more of a feel for the choices/actions but now I think I am more confused than I was when I had some other players with me. Sinus headache doesn't help

Edit 2: Ok, I ran through playing all four factions (correctly I hope!) and ended with a Government win (Syndicate was close) on Propaganda Card three which was the second card after Propaganda Card 2 which disallowed the opposition from mounting a counterattack on support. Think I'm getting the hang of it but I certainly didn't play the 26th well enough. Now to try the solo rules!

Edit 3: Charts! Yeah, I got to the solo game last night and boy are there a lot of charts. I think i am getting the hang of them but they definitely extend the play time. I am certain as I get to know the game better this will improve. I've thought about playing all four sides as some have done but I'm still wondering if the choices I am making for each faction are really very good. Likely to take the time hit and use the charts a few times to see how the AI manages the factions and get familiar with the cards. It's out on the table so I'm going to give it another go in a minute.

Edit 4: MOAR Charts! I'm getting the hang of it though. I get how some have said the charts don't always pick the best move for some of the factions but they often pick a better action than I was so I've learned from them. With some more fiddling I should be able to teach it to Mon soon. Every time I have it out she says "Ooooh!" and I can tell is keen to try it.

On another note I finished my No New Games Until 5x5 Challenge! and Osaka Game Market here I come!

Will still be on my table tonight, so counting this for March. Have completed the Spanish scenario twice, and almost completed the Mexican era twice. I like how both times have been so different. My challenge to myself for March is to complete the American era twice and then complete the full campaign. I also have to finish the background reading of "Blood and Thunder".

Now if I could just stop myself from doing so much background reading at BGG then I would get a few more games in. I also wouldn't want to run BattleLore solitaire top decking command and Lore cards.

Still have not found out how the solitaire Combat Commander players choose to handle op-fire. Will try not to look that up so I keep to my original plan.

I just started playing this one a few days ago and plan to try and hit 20 plays by the end of March (all solo architect mode). I will continue to post my scores here for further discussion. I was feeling my way through the first time without any real strategy. The second time I built my income up really early and then started adding population. I had it as high as 83 but lost a few near the end by adding population too fast. I absolutely love this game solo. You really have to be aware of the interactions between every tile to maximize your score. Hopefully it has enough legs to keep me busy for a while. I don't want to "figure it out" and then not be able to have any more fun playing it!

Update: 3 more plays tonight. I have my strategy really refined now, 100 should be fairly easy to get regularly. Plays 4 and developed quite differently. In play 4 I got my income and reputation up early allowing for good steady growth until the end. Play 5 was fairly crazy as I got 42 population on 2 of the last three turns - high school for 21 and then I invested in it. Blew through a ton of lines on those turns, but it didn't hurt me too bad. Final note, I am using a house rule where I play as long as there are at least 2 tiles available in the market at the start of a turn. I can see whay you would want to randomize the ending in a multiplayer game, but I don't like it in the single player context.

Update: Guess I got a bit overconfident after last night's breakout games. Tonight I saw how the timing or absence of certain tiles entirely can drastically change your strategy and result. Not the 100+ I predicted, but close and my games continue to be loads of fun.

Update: Play 8 saw be back over 100 and play 9 was really a breakout. Everything fell in to place perfectly. I have included a picture of my final board so that you can see. I was able to build up my income early using the commercial district. Through phase B I focused on residential build up. My income was high and I wasn't spending a ton of money so I built up a big stockpile of cash. The tiles came out so that my last four turns were middle school, high school, invest in high school, high school. This was good for 88 population in four turns less the penalties I took for losing reputation.

Score tracker:

Play 1: 63
Play 2: 79
Play 3: 77
Play 4: 109
Play 5: 114
Play 6: 96
Play 7: 99
Play 8: 106
Play 9: 144

Getting itchy for some baseball! I had History Maker Baseball on my short list for purchase. The "decider die" Kickstarter reeled me in. Unfortuantely I have to wait until May for delivery, so in the mean time I plan on breaking out Replay Baseball.

Being a Cincinnati fan, 1975 is THE year to replay. My goal for March is to replay the 1975 AL (Red Sox and A's) and NL (Reds and Pirates) league championships then play the World Series with the winners. I pledge to complete the project even if the Pirates win. yuk

This Geeklist Item is going to get unwieldy as I add game. Therefore I had a Session report ok'd by the higher ups on the Replay Baseball page. I will post the write-ups there for those that are interested.

Played this for the first time today to get the rules down for our Gaming-Sunday. Well, the training scenario didn't help much as it is way too simple. After that I tried scenario 10 with 4 survivors and once I reached the yellow threat level things really started to get interesting. In the end I was cornered and overrun from two sides and didn't reach the last mission objective.

I think Sunday will be fun and I like the game. It's a bit on the light side and seems to be too luck-driven for my taste, but that definitely helps with my gaming group. The strong theme and seemingly endless sandbox-potential, especially with Season 2 and Toxic City Mall (yeah, I'm thinking about it ;/), could also make this one of my solo-favourties. It's too early to be sure though.

I lost a short scenario 15-6 today. I was planning on playing longer, but it was a blood bath so I called it.

I think I'm too aggressive and don't know when to call my fighters home. They'll get shot down at 7 am and then the Germans have the rest of the day to bomb at will. Back to the drawing board.

I'm still working through the 2014 Giro d'Italia series using the Homas Tour Pro solo varant. Work keeps intruding so I only finished one stage last month. It was much more successful for my team and I actually have one rider in the top 10 (of 20). I did get in a couple of other games, so the month wasn't as much of a loss as it might sound. One game a week doesn't sound like much compared to some others on this list, but it's ahead of schedule compared to my last several years.

Bicycle racing season is upon us, tomorrow is Omloop het Nieuwsblad, so I'll be even more inspired to get some gaming in.

mb Death Angel Challenge mb

After hosting three Mini GG Giveaways in previous SGoYT geeklists, I took last month off…and participated in Ryan’s Flash Point Mini Challenge. It was a lot of fun! And when some discussion broke out later in the month regarding a potential SH: DA challenge, I was more than happy to get involved.

This one will be closer to Ryan’s Flash Point Challenge than any of my previous giveaways. A point system has been devised to give the player a total score over the course of three Missions. While this is not a true campaign (in other words, if a Marine dies in Mission 1, he can still participate in Mission 2 and/or 3), the player will attempt to complete all three Missions with as many Marines surviving at the end of each one as possible. Points will be scored based on the number of successful Locations completed and the number of surviving Marines at the end of the Mission…if you make it that far.

Here are the general rules of play:

Base Game Only
3 Missions

Starting Setup for Each Mission:

• Each player starts with the same three pairs of Marines (chosen randomly; three in Mission 1, the other three in Mission 2, and a random draw for Mission 3)
• Each player will use the same Locations (chosen randomly; no Locations will be repeated amongst the three Missions except for the Void Lock)
• The initial Genestealer spawn for all Missions will be from the event card, Rescue Space Marine (this way everyone starts with the same number of GS and no one will get an "extra" Marine during any Mission)

Player Objective:

• To make it as far into each Mission as possible with as many Marines surviving to the end of each.

Points to be Awarded

• Each completed Location is worth one additional point per Mission. In other words, the Void Lock is 1 point, Location 2 is 2 points, Location 3 is 3 points, and completing Location 4 is 4 points.
• Each Marine that is alive at the end of the Mission is worth 1 point. In other words, one Marine surviving is 1 point, two Marines is 2 points, etc. You must complete the entire Mission (survive Location 4) to receive points for Marines.

Tiebreakers

• Tiebreaker #1 = total number of completed Locations for all Missions
• Tiebreaker #2 = total number of surviving Marines for all Missions

GG Prizes

The top three scores will be awarded (and thank you Jack for the First Prize donation!):

35 to the Winner
20 to the First Runner Up
10 to the Second Runner Up
8 to the Last Place Finisher
8 to a Random Finisher (who didn't win one of the other prizes)

Friendly Reminders

• If you would like to participate, please post a comment to this geeklist item with your score(s). You may post more than one score if you wish but only your best score will count toward the prizes.

• While you do not have to play all three missions in one sitting, please post your score for all three missions as one comment so I can more easily keep track of them.

• It is not required, but feel free to give us a brief (or not so brief) AAR, describing your Marines fight to defeat the nasty beasts! Pics would be cool too, but again, not a requirement.

• You must use the starting setups for each mission listed below so that everyone begins on similar ground.

• The challenge will conclude at the end of March, and I will post the winners on April 1st (or soon after). If you have any questions regarding this challenge, please ask.

Obviously, this Challenge is based upon good sportsmanship and honesty since we are all playing solo, but I’m sure there won’t be any issues.

Good luck! meeple
Mo

MISSION #3

Marines: Lorenzo & Deino (Blue), Gideon & Noctis (Green), Zael & Omnio (Purple)

Initial Spawn Card: Rescue Space Marine (Card# 30/30)

EDIT 01-Mar-2014: Added clarifications to points given by surviving Marines and the card number for Rescue Space Marine.

EDIT 08-Mar-2014: Added current rankings as of the date/time noted above. If you notice any errors, please send me a GM. I will update this at the end of each week (hopefully).

EDIT 16-Mar-2014: Updated current rankings as of the date/time noted above. If you notice any errors, please send me a GM. I'll try to have one more update next weekend as well. Also, I've updated the Prize List.

EDIT 24-Mar-2014: Updated current rankings as of the date/time noted above. If you notice any errors, please send me a GM. This is this the final update. One week to go for the Challenge. Looks like there are two people who still need to complete a Mission or two. Plenty of time, though, if anyone else wants to jump in on the fun.

EDIT 1-Apr-2014: Time to give out the prizes!!

Below are two charts...the Final Standings and the list of assigned die numbers for the Random Drawing. Technically, since there was a tie for 2nd Place, I guess there wouldn't be a 3rd Place finisher....but forget that! Both 2nd Place finishers win the full GG prize, plus our "4th" Place finisher will take home the original 3rd Place prize.

Only one participant didn't complete the Challenge as far as I could tell.

IF I MISSED SOMEONE, PLEASE GM ME!!

Final Rankings:

Assigned Die Numbers for the Random Drawing:

WINNERS

1st Place, 35 GG = ahwala (ahwala)

2nd Place, 20 GG = Utter Loser (jacobjcoon)

2nd Place, 20 GG = Chris (Marlowespade)

3rd Place, 10 GG = Ron (SBGrad)

Lowest Score, 8 GG = Ryan (Ryanmobile)

Random Winner, 8 GG = (GeekRoll: 1d13 = (3) = 3) Michael (gersh77)

Thank you so much to everyone who participated this month. It was an awesome good time!!

So far he has translated two stories into his variant: Fall of the House of Lynch, and The Inner Sanctum. I've played Inner Sanctum a few times already, and I'm working on a session report for my play from last weekend as I managed to take some photos.

I have a monthly thematic game group and I hope to reintroduce this game to them as fully cooperative.

This will be my sole entry in the EH event this month. I went with Cthulu because go big or go home, right?

So begins our story...

Eldritch Horror: A Chronicle of Investigator Delay, Death, and Discombobulation

Our story begins like any other. Rumblings of the return of Cthulu are headlining papers everywhere. Panic is permeating every corner of the world. Even the the most powerful armies in the world have given a figurative shrug to the situation.

The fate of the world rests with the only three people crazy enough to investigate the matter:

-Norman Withers: retired astronomer lovingly designated the "crazy old fart" of the neighborhood.
-Jacqueline Fine: Amateur paranormal investigator; expert psychic. Intrusive in that awkward way.
-Diana Stanley: Reformed cultist and the world's only hope of bringing the pain to Cthulu's minions.

Within the first day of our investigators' travels. A rumor started brewing about some secrets from the past. Ancient artifacts that hold the power to defeat Cthulu are hidden around the world, but sources are renouncing the existence of such artifacts. Will all of these lead vanish leaving world helpless?

Within a few days, the team had actually gathered a fair amount of information and was set to solve the first mystery of Cthulu's return. A strange storm formed in the western Atlantic, however and all three of our investigators found themselves sucked into a mysterious void.

This event would foreshadow the rest of our story. Norman Withers would be the first to meet his doom. It was in a cold back alley of Rome. A wraith appeared and the poor old man couldn't keep it together. He broke down in a blathering stupor.

Next to pass was Diana Stanley. Diana had befriended a witch doctor in her travels through Siberia. The witch doctor had ill intentions, however. In Tokyo, he stabbed Diana in the back with a bone shard. A truly terrible ending.

While the rest of her team was meeting its grisly demise. Jacqueline Fine proceeded to the southernmost reaches of the world. She defeated the great beast, Cthylla with the help of the secret "Agency". This turn of events obviously angered papa Cthulu.

Jacqueline then set her sights on solving the final mystery. She took a ship to the south Pacific ocean where she hoped to solve a mystery of R'lyeh. She arrived safely, though a bit bruised from her fight with Cthylla. This was the only chance the world had to survive given that the secrets of the past mentioned earlier had eliminated all but one lead on any artifact fit to defeat Cthulu.

As Jacqueline floated in the middle of the sea, a vision came to her. She attempted to make sense of it. Was it an Other World? A destroyed and warped corner of the Earth? It didn't matter. As Jacqueline Fine wrestled with the images in her head, her last bit of sanity betrayed her. She crumbled to the deck of the ship, rolling back and forth shouting something incomprehensible.

After that, Cthulu woke up and ate the world.

The End

March 1, 2014

I just finished a game of Firefly, using a solitaire Story Card that I created myself, called "Beholden to Niska". I am attempting to create a solo scenario that lasts longer than the official one, has more of an adventure theme, while also being more difficult to win.

I think it worked pretty well, although I only obtained a Minor Victory for goal 3. I didn't even reach goal 2 until turn 25 (out of 30), then then just barely!

I have posted the my Solitaire Story Card for Firefly: the Game, along with my Solo House Rules (which can be used with any Firefly solo story card), here:

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1131219/

So, if any of you who play the game wouldn't mind checking out my Story Card and house rules, and giving me some feedback, I'd appreciate it!

March 3, 2014

Choosing Monty as the Leader, and using Jude's Solo House Rules, I playtested the Story Card called "Beholden to Niska" that I am creating to make the solitaire game more adventurous, difficult, and longer (see the post under this one for the Story Card).

After playing, I decided that my "Beholden to Niska" Story Card is TOO difficult to win! I revised the card to make Goal 2 a bit easier to achieve, and also revised the rules to state that using any or all of the rules from Jude's Solo House Rules is optional.

In my playtest game, I only managed to complete Goal 2 on the last turn by not playing my crew for the last 2 jobs, thereby causing them to desert, leaving only my Leader. My last job was at Ezra so I could pay Niska on the last turn, but I failed Goal 3 because I then had less than $1000 left. For a short while, I thought I might achieve at least a Marginal Victory, but botching a job wasted a turn and I barely made to to Niska for the last turn.

After a really enjoyable month contributing to February's SGOYT list I have decided to continue this month too.

First off the bat is Mage Knight.

My wife and girls were out for about 6 hours so I had more than enough time to play this beast.

After nearly four and a half hours of set up, play, scoring and packing away I have put this back at the top of my top 10 list. The time commitment has kept this off the top before but after today that's not a good enough reason to keep it off the top.

I was bit down on it last month because it slapped me around but today that experience paid off and I was reminded how good this can be.

I played Goldyx today and the green fella did not let me down. After a disappointing first day where he seemed to get nothing done, just enjoying the view he stepped up. His speciality was going in to dungeons and ancient ruins and coming out with great stuff.

Finally, revealed the green city and attacked it on the last day. His three units came in handy and although He had to retreat with only 2 of the enemies defeated he went straight back in and finished the job. This allowed him to level up so 4 units would be possible.

After healing, recruiting 2 level 4 units in the green city and revealing the final city (red) the last night started and what an epic one it would be. A draconum lay in his path to the red city but it was defeated. Then
an attack on the final city was initiated.

He used the altem mages black mana fuelled ability to turn all his attacks in to siege attacks which allowed him to kill 3 of the defenders but again he had to retreat when the double fortified enemy could not be defeated.

Time and cards we're running out. He used midnight meditation to redraw 3 cards which worked out well in the end.

After a 20 minute brain freeze the right order of cards, powers and mana allowed him to generate the 14 attack needed to dispatch the final defender.

186 fame points in total and no major rules error as far as I could tell.

Loved it and hoping I get another half day soon to play it.

Hi

I just bought this. As I mentioned already, I had some issues with the theme here (Éowyn AND Denethor questing together ), and lots of people recommended getting the Saga expansions to fix that.

So, I saw this at my FLGS, and took the plunge. I'll comment my impressions here.

Hello!

I have finally finished my first session as a playtester for Forging Quicksilver. The game is currently undergoing public playtesting, although there had been a deadline for signing up for it.

While being a fantasy game of heroes fighting a villain, there is no in-game flavour text, making it more of a tactical game. Since there is quite some dice rolling involved, I am hesitant to call it strategic, although moving limited tokens to mark actions feels a bit Euro style (^_^;;

The game has official solitaire rules and I already suggested a variation for them to add a bit more unpredictability to the game. However, this session was played with a two-player setup and me playing both sides. As the possible actions especially of the villain are very limited (I actually had the impression that the villain was really getting the short end of the stick), doing this versus game solo was not too difficult.

You can read my session report here.

Yours,
Deathworks

So I'm really loving this game, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Base Set has been put on hold for a week or 2 while I await the delivery of the latest AP

I ended up putting a deck together today from bits and pieces I've learned

Deck was a tri-sphere deck with Beravor (Lore), Eowyn (Spirit) & Theodred (Leadership)
Starting Threat - 27

Quest 1 - Passage through Mirkwood

This was the first time since I've got the game that I've actually understood enemy engagement rules, which means this will be the first time that damn forest spider will only attack me for 3 damage!!!!!
Was a successful quest, I'm still using the old scoring rules as I need to use my D20 shortly to measure how many rounds I've done.
Kept my threat really low at some points and was just pumping through the quests, ended up getting Forest Snare on Ungoliant spawn during the final stage.

Score - 37 (with old scoring rules)

Quest 2 - Journey Down the Anduin
So this is really the first time I've gone up against this quest as I've heard it's very hard when solo

I'm not quite sure if I did anything wrong but honestly I found this quite easy... I was lucky in that my first encounter was a treachery card which didn't affect me at that stage, so all that was in the staging area was the troll with 1 threat.
Was able to put a lot of questing in the initial stage and draw some more cards using Beravor.
By the time the 2nd stage came around I had about 27 wisdom with only 9 maximum possible threat in the staging area, my threat at this point is still sub-35 and all the enemies are over 35 threat.
In the end on the final stage I had about 5 enemies in the staging area, 2 of which fell quickly during the first round of that stage.

All in all I think either my deck was quite solid or I just got really really lucky because at no point did I find myself in trouble, though Eowyn did die in the end unfortunately

Score - 41 (old scoring rules)

Quest 3 - Escape from Dol Guldur
This will be my next challenge, heard it's virtually impossible playing solo so I will see how I go but from reading I may need to hold off until I build my player card pool more.

Currently I've got the first 2x AP's on backorder and I'm wondering if I should splash out for the remaining 4x AP's in the Mirkwood cycle as I'm loving this game... but I'm planning to play using the 'questing' philosophy of not using player cards in that pack until I get to that quest.

There is one thing I wish could be implemented and that is the same system Magic uses for when you mulligan, simply draw 1 less card. As it stands it seems you can mulligan until you get whatever card you want, but I guess I could add that in myself

Second game of this lovely design. I lost on bacterial. Had cash coming out the wazoo but that doesn't help when you've got molecules in the C-Ring and a death toll that won't slow down for a breather.

Really glad I took the chance on this one. To use an infamous pop culture reference, it comes in a small box but it's quite a bit bigger on the inside.
