A smaller list this time; with all the Combat Commander stuff leaving the list this one is barely two pages long.

The torrent of news and preorders that came in January continued in February. There are no P500 additions, but GMT divulged a lot of reprint-related info in their February 19 update. The news is as follows:

-GMT outlined their reprint philosophy, which boils down to: Twilight Struggle, Dominant Species, Commands and Colors, Combat Commander, CDG's, GBoH Alexander and SPQR, and then everything else.
-Fields of Fire will be getting reprinted alongside its sequel, currently slated for 3Q
-Alexander Deluxe is printing in 2Q. They didn't explicitly say that Diadochi and Phalanx will be joining it, but I'll assume that's the case until it's explicitly deconfirmed. Maybe I should ask on CSW myself, actually!
-GMT plans to put out 2-5 CDG reprints in 4Q, based on funds available and preorder numbers. Keep the orders coming and help us get all 5!
-Pax Romana could sneak a 4Q slot alongside Genesis but it isn't likely. Apparently Berg needs to complete some additional revisions to the game before it can go to print
-Ukraine '43 and Normandy '44 are being actively improved, but are lower priority in the reprint hierarchy for now. Keep an eye on 2015 once the reprint backlog is cleared out more, though
-GMT wants to get the East Front Series back in print after its long hiatus. More news will have to wait until tax season ends, however, as designer Vance von Borries is a CPA.

CC: Europe, CC: Mediterranean, Paratroopers, and Stalingrad all charged and shipped since the last Geeklist, so they've graduated from the list. Happy gaming!

TSCW is a 2-player, medium complexity game simulating the struggle between Republican and Nationalist forces in Spain. The players take on the role of one of the two combatants in the conflict marshaling their forces towards victory. Initially, the game progresses in monthly turns from July of 1936 and changes to bi-monthly turns in November of 1936 through the end of the war in April of 1939. Victory is primarily determined by the Morale Scale, by which Nationalist players attempt to crush the Republican will to fight before time runs out.

The game is a traditional hex and counter title (unlike the new CDG Crusade and Revolution), and includes an alternate history scenario featuring a German invasion of Spain!

Comments: Slow growth continues for this title. If it ever reprints it figures to be a long wait.

Achtung! Panzer!

Panzer Major Points

Game system designed for small unit actions from platoon to battalion-sized formations
Vehicles, towed guns and aircraft are scaled at 1:1 with each 7/8” double-sided counter representing a single unit
The 5/8” double-sided leg unit counters are scaled at squads, half-squads and sections, including their attached weapons
Ground scale is 100 meters per hex
Comprehensive yet quick to play
Basic set includes a 22” x 34” mapboard
Expansion sets include multiple double-sided geomorphic mapboards
Modular rules system with Basic, Advanced and Optional rules section. Players may keep it simple or as complex as desired.
All of the unit data is included on the full-color data cards.
The streamlined chit-based command system moves the action along at a brisk pace.

Comments: A better month for this remake. The third expansion arrives next month which could drive some more interest, though the link between new titles in a series and orders for older versions seems less direct than one would expect. I'm not sure why.

Marching Orders:

1914, Twilight in the East models the battles that took place in Prussia, Poland and Galicia during the first year of World War One. Beginning with the Russian invasions of Prussia and Galicia in August and ending after the Battle of Lodz in December, it recreates the ebb and flow of the huge forces sent marching across the Eastern Front in 1914.

Designed by Michael Resch, and developed by Dick Vohlers, the game has been comprehensively researched using a great array of resources, including the military archives in Vienna, Austria. The game's Order of Battle has been thoroughly researched and is by far the best used by any game on the subject. Mike has written streamlined rules so that not only is it playable, but it's focused on those aspects of warfare that made the opening stages of WWI so unique.

Comment: Like Panzer and SCW, this one keeps lumbering along slowly. It probably won't hit 70 by the time the one-year mark hits, so this figures to have a lengthy stay on the list.

Washington’s War is the long awaited re-design of the original card driven game, We the People. Washington's War, like it's predecessor, pits the forces of a world power (England) against its rebellious American colonists as they fight for their independence.
Washington's War is a true re-design that maintains the deep strategy ofWe the People while creating a game with a very short playing time (approximately 90 minutes). Unlike most wargames, Washington's War allows you and your opponent to play twice while switching sides in one sitting. This feature allows for rapid tournament play either face-to-face or on the Internet. Washington's War is the perfect antidote for a time conscious crowd whose only option up to now have been Eurogames.

Comments: All of the CDG's in GMT's planned reprint cohort had great months. While WaWar has the lowest order total, I wouldn't be surprised if it was able to leapfrog Successors in priority given its general popularity.

The Line:

Phalanx covers two of the major battles in the waning days of the Successor Wars, in which the Greek city-states and leagues and the descendants of the original Diadochoi were still fighting for Hellenic supremacy, and in which the phalanx -- the massive, heavy infantry formation brought to peak efficiency by Alexander -- was still in its heyday. The armies in these battles are very Macedonian in style, with a lot of mixing of unit types and capabilities, with the exception that, because of the terrain, reliance on cavalry is almost non-existent. The phalanx itself was still the army's anchor, although it was only a generation away from its initial comeuppance at the hands of a Roman army at Cynoscephalae.

Comments: Not a stand alone game, but an expansion for the Great Battles of Alexander edition of the GBoH game series.

Comments: Some orders lost, but assuming it's going out alongside Deluxe Alexader in the next three months it's of no import.

Info:

Ardennes '44 explores the Bulge campaign with a detailed order of battle and an extremely accurate Ardennes game map which covers the area from the Our River to the Meuse. Ardennes '44 covers the period from December 16th to the 26th. Two shorter one-map scenarios are included which cover the initial stages of the German attack. The Ardennes '44 game system is designed by Mark Simonitch, winner of the CSR James F. Dunnigan Award for Design Elegance and Best WWII Board Game of 2000 for Ukraine '43.

The result is Ardennes '44, a game that both the "Bulge enthusiast" and the casual player will enjoy.

Comments: Another good month for Ardennes after what had been a slow start. It looks like GMT can do wonders for reprint numbers by just talking a lot about reprint plans; Simonitch's games have all benefited after getting mentioned in their updates. Maybe they should act on this trend more often!

SPQR (Deluxe Edition) is a re-working of the classic GMT game of warfare in the age of the Roman Republic. The deluxe edition contains the five scenarios, maps and counters from the original SPQR, plus nine additional scenarios (and the requisite maps and counters) taken from various expansion modules. This major revision makes available again a key part of the brilliant Great Battles of History Series.

Battles: (and the modules they appeared in originally)
Heraclea - 280 BC (Pyrrhic Victory)
Ausculum - 279 BC (Pyrrhic Victory)
Beneventum - 275 BC (SPQR)
Bagradas Plains - 255 BC (SPQR)
Trebbia - 218 BC (Consul for Rome)
Cannae - 216 BC (SPQR)
Baecula - 208 BC (Africanus)
The Metaurus - 207 BC (Consul for Rome)
Ilipa - 206 BC (Africanus)
The Great Plains - 204 BC (C3i No.4)
Zama - 202 BC (SPQR)
Cynoscephalae - 197 BC (SPQR)
Magnesia - 190 BC (War Elephant)
The Muthul River - 109 BC (Jugurtha)

Comments: Another strong month. GMT explicitly said that this game is going to have to wait for a while, though, with so many other reprints in front of it. Late 2015 may be a good guess for an arrival time if it keeps up the strong pace.

Deluxe info:

No Retreat: The Russian Front is new deluxe edition of the two-player Victory Point Games 2008 CSR Award Nominee wargame that retells the story of the titanic struggle between the invading armies of Nazi Germany versus Communist Russia during WW2 at a player-friendly and manageable level of scope and difficulty. This edition combines both the original game and its two extensions (Na Berlin ! and No Surrender!) using deluxe components of “Twillight Struggle Deluxe Edition” quality. With only 50 Army/Front sized counters for the Tournament game, and 70 for the whole campaign, and with very low stacking, it’s a quick-playing yet realistic affair that favours the strategic and offensive-minded player.

The game comes with 6 scenarios and a tournament game along with the full campaign game. There are also dedicated solo rules.

This is currently listed as a simple reprint, but designer Carl Paradis has said he will try to add some new features, including the separately-published solitaire module, some mini-games, and a new design style for the event cards.

Comments: Slower than some recent months but no signs of stagnation yet. No Retreat 4 is tentatively planned for 4Q, but they seem to be moving a little slowly on the P500 so they may get pushed into 2015 (or even '16, according to Paradis. Say it ain't so, Carl!). This one reprinting alongside one of them isn't a bad bet, given how quickly the first edition sold out.

Aloha information:

NOTE: The reprint edition of Conquest of Paradise will include a MOUNTED MAPBOARD.

The Time: Circa 500 A.D.
The Place: The first islands of a new culture, later to be known as Polynesia.
The Situation: You lead a tribe looking to expand its influence throughout the South Pacific.
Conquest of Paradise is a game of empire building in the "Polynesian Triangle" of the central Pacific Ocean for two, three, or four players. Players explore the unknown ocean around them, hoping to discover the most lucrative island groups, and colonize them.

Conquest of Paradise is a well-tested, fast-playing design geared to appeal to players who enjoy games like New World, Civilization, and Conquistador. You can learn the game in 10-15 minutes and finish a complete game in 60-90 minutes.

Mounted map can be pre-ordered separately:

http://www.gmtgames.com/p-449-conquest-of-paradise-mounted-m...

Fixes:

1. Make changes to Rules and Designer Notes from the Living Rules. Also, make changes generated by items 7 and 8 below.
2. Change "Open Ocean" markers to match ocean hex color (not ocean box color).
3. Change background color for tan, yellow, and green pieces for better contrast with other colors.
4. Provide better contrast for symbols on backs of tan, yellow, and white pieces.
5. Fix three misspellings on map: Kiritimati, Rarotonga, and Kermadec.

Improvements:

6. Provide mounted map.
7. Provide full-color rules and Player Charts
8. Provide 10mm wood cubes for villages (50 of them!).
9. Provide 27 Random Event cards
10. Provide one additional Arts & Culture "apita Pottery" card to fill out full 55-card deck.
11. Change fourteen 1/2"counters from Villages (no longer needed) to special markers to go with the Random Event markers.
12. Change twenty 1/2" counters from Villages to Control markers. New artwork needed.
13. Fourteen remaining Village counters to have Improved Agriculture on both sides (not just the back, as now).

Comments: Thus far the strongest of the titles added last May, though it has slowed down a bit recently. GMT apparently has high hopes for this, though, hoping that the souped-up reprint will get it some traction with the non-wargamers who made Twilight Struggle and Dominant Species such huge hits. We should hope they're correct; I imagine TS has funded the printing of many more marginal wargames!

Info:

Successors is a four-player game based on the wars of the Diadochi, the successors to Alexander following his early death without a strong heir.

Successors was first published in 1995 by Avalon Hill. Some years later a second edition rulebook was published that gave more options for the Tyche cards. This updated Successors third edition builds on the foundation of the Successor 2nd edition rules set plus expansion cards that appeared in the Boardgamer. Minor refinements have been made to make the game easier to play and increase enjoyment. The map will be very similar to the original (it's a mounted map!) with some minor changes around Macedonia. Counters will have the same excellent artwork for the generals and new GMT artwork for the combat units and control markers. The Tyche cards have recieved the most changes—nearly every card has had some minor modifications and a few new cards have been added.

In addition to the changes, the rules have been cleaned up and improved.

Comment: The weakest of the five CDG games, but it still had a good month. I think it's the most likely to be excluded in this fall's set of reprints, though. It originally wasn't in the set of games they were planning to promote and was only added after somebody on CSW asked. Still, some more months like this and maybe it can win a slot.

The 411:

Normandy '44 is a 2, 3, or 4-player, regimental level game of the D-Day landings on June 6th and the battles that raged in Normandy for the next 21 days.

Each turn represents 1 day. Each hex represents 3.8 kilometers (or 2.3 miles). Most units are regiments or brigades though most of the armor units are represented as battalions.

The game uses a simplified Ardennes '44 system: Move, Fight and Reserve Movement. The game includes a 22 turn Campaign game, a 7-turn Tournament Scenario that focuses on the Allies linking up the beaches, and a scenario covering the battle in the peninsula and the capture of Cherbourg. In addition, there are rules for allowing 3 or even 4 players to play the game.

Comment: This got some lip-service in the GMT update, and lo, it gained 30 orders. I won't complain. Simonitch is apparently updating this title for the reprint, though I don't know the particular details of how.

Maybe GMT should just announce a planned reprint for 1Q of 2015 and watch the orders roll in. For some reason customers love to order AFTER games are announced for a printing even though that makes no sense. If you want the game, you should let GMT know, guys!

Trench Notes:

NOTE: The fifth printing includes the Mounted Map, Thicker Counters, and thicker Box of the fourth printing.

Following in the footsteps of We the People, Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage, Successors (second edition), and For the People, Paths of Glory utilizes a similar card-driven system. The game covers WWI from its outbreak to American intervention and spans all of Europe and the Middle East. Not only is the game innovative, but it also plays fast, usually within just an evening.

While the game itself has all of the normal expectations of a wargame, with various units, CRT charts and period chrome, at heart the game rests within the card play. Players are given a hand of cards to play out six sub-phases of a turn. Each sub-phase allows for the use of a card or a pass with a minimal movement of units. Each card has four possible uses: operational movement, strategic movement, special events, and replacement points. The cardplay forces players to constantly make tough decsions as they feel that they need to do a little bit of everything but they can only do one thing at a time. How you play your cards will decide to a large degree the outcome of the war.

Comment: All the CDG's had great months and PoG was no exception. Amazing to see it pull in these numbers on it's fifth printing.

I've seen some murmers in the CSW folder encouraging GMT to update the game to include the current historical variant, but GMT hasn't expressed any plans to change the game thus far.

Ye Olde Info:

This Accursed Civil War is a tactical battle game featuring five battles from the First English Civil War: 1642-1646. It is the first in the GMT Musket & Pike Battle System covering warfare in the 17th Century. The system emphasizes Command and Control and the unique style of combat in that era. Armies are divided into three of four wings. Each wing has an order that limits the types of actions that units of that wing may perform. Wings may change their order, but it is not an easy task to accomplish. Victory goes to the commander who can coordinate the actions of these wings in the heat of battle.

The battles included in this game are:

Edgehill, 23 October 1642
First Newbury, 20 September 1643

Honest Abe Sez:

For the People is a grand strategy game of the American Civil War covering the conflict from Texas to Pennsylvania, from the firing on Fort Sumter to the end at Appomattox Court House. You take the role of either President Lincoln or President Davis and command the armies, promote and relieve generals, conduct amphibious assaults, dispatch cavalry raids, and even battle incompetency and political intrigue among members of your own cabinet.

For the People includes a deck of strategy cards for conducting campaigns and incorporating the many events and personalities of the war. The Confederate player can build ironclads, naval mines (torpedoes), submarines, conduct overseas purchases, and work towards foreign intervention. The Union player can build up his naval blockade, his ironclad fleet, fight draft riots, secure the Border States, and issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Relive the history of this exciting time when our nation was torn asunder.

The reprint will include a mounted map.

Comments: Like all the other CDG's this classic is getting boosted strongly by GMT's appeal for pre-orders. I'd hazard a guess that this is third in the reprint hierarchy among the 5 games, and unless orders suddenly dry up it should be getting mailed out next fall.

The info:

Diadochoi covers the four major battles that took place during the early Diadochoi wars at the end of the 4th Century BC as Alexander the Great's marshals jostled and fought for position and control of his vast empire. Each of the diadochoi, the so-called "successors", sought to expand upon and improve the Macedonian system of warfare so brilliantly used by Alexander. Ultimately, all they succeeded in doing was to rigidly formalize its elements, adding only hordes of elephants, the ultimate expression of which was the massive battle of Ipsus, the largest known elephant battle in history.

Comment: The other Alexander module also loses some orders. I suspect this represents people upgrading to preordering the full Deluxe Alexander, which is going to include some extra goodies above and beyond the last printing.

The company info:

The eighth game in Great Battles of History, Cataphract portrays the development of the art of war wrought by the early Byzantine Empire, during the reign of Emperor Justinian, under his great Generals, Belisarius and Narses. During this period the Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, for a brief period of time, re-captured a large portion of what was formerly the Western Roman Empire.

Cataphract covers all the major battles that defined this era. To place these battles in their proper historical context, the Campaign Game, Justinian, is enclosed, which covers the quest to reconquer the Roman Empire under one ruler.

Comments: It doesn't reach the heights of the other games, but this is an incredible month for this stalwart of the reprint list. It's only picked up about 50 orders in the last year, which isn't a lot but at least allows for hope. Mention it in an update, GMT!

The skinny:

Ukraine '43 simulates the post-Citadel Soviet offensive in a moderately complex game. The design uses the conventional move-fight-exploit sequence of play and the popular Zone of Control Bond rules. Soviet tank armies and German panzer corps spearhead constant attacks and counterattacks. With both sides able to attack, the game becomes a tense battle of skill and nerves.

Comments: Like with many games, a blurb in GMT's update causes a nice spike in orders. The update also mentioned that Simonitch is improving the game in quite a few ways, making it something to look forward to for 2015 or beyond.

The skinny:

Empire of the Sun (EotS) is Mark Herman's third card driven design since he introduced the system to the hobby in We The People. EotS is a strategic level look at the entire War in the Pacific from the attack on Pearl Harbor until the surrender of Japan. EotS is the first card driven game (CDG) to move the system closer to a classic hexagon wargame, while retaining all of the tension and uncertainty people have come to expect from a CDG. Players are cast in the role of MacArthur, Yamamoto, Nimitz, and Mountbatten as you direct your forces across the breadth of the globe from India to Hawaii and from Alaska to Australia. This is represented on a single map based on a 1942 equal area projection of the entire theater of conflict.

The reprint will come with a mounted map, the most recent rules, and presumably fixed errata cards and counters as well.

Comments: The Hunters may have more orders, but this is the absolute star of the list for the past two editions. After stagnating just short of 200 for several months, GMT's plea for CDG orders has lit a fire beneath this title and sent it rocketing up the list. A year ago people were anticipating a possible Cataphract-level wait for this one; now I'd be shocked if it didn't arrive this fall. A special congratulations to airjudden is in order, as he's been a relentless advocate for this game on the forums for several months.

The Hunters is a solitaire tactical level game placing you in command of a German U-boat during WWII. Your mission is to destroy as much Allied Shipping and as many Capital ships as possible while advancing your crew quality and increasing your commander rank culminating in special decoration ‒ all while remembering you have to make it home.

Game System Highlights:

8 German U-Boat types represented
9 Patrol Assignments
350+ named shipping targets
Special Missions for Abwehr Agent Delivery and Minelaying
Combat encounters with individual ships, ships with escort, convoys, and aircraft
Daytime and Night Engagement including wolfpack patrols
U-Boat Damage includes flooding, hull, torpedo doors, periscope, fuel tanks, crew injury (by crew type), engines, hydrophones, flak gun(s), deck gun, batteries, radio
Crew Advancement, Commander Promotion including special decoration up to The Knight's Cross
Multi-player and Tournament Rule options (including Wolfpack Tournament)
Evasive Maneuvers, Patrol Abort, Variable Escort Quality, Resupply at Sea, Gibraltar Passage, Reassignment to Newer U-Boat, Torpedo Duds, Random "Historical" Events, and much, much more!

Comments: GMT clearly massively underestimated demand for this solitaire title. It should pass the P500 threshold by month's end. I don't know if that's be record speed for a reprint, but it's certainly the fastest growth I've seen. It's not slotted for a reprint yet but I imagine GMT will find a way to work it in sooner rather than later.

A sister game, Silent Victory, has been added to the normal P500 as well.

The 411:

Another game in GMT's big Barbarossa series, this one focused on the drive through the former Baltic states towards Leningrad. Includes:

-Five 22x34 inch color mapsheets (with a reprint of Map C from Army Group Center), plus Maps A, B, L, and a full sheet devoted to the Leningrad inset map.
-Two 17x22 inch color mapsheets (front and back printed). Half sheet Map W with the Learning Scenario backprinted on it and a half mapsheet with Scenario One map area, set-up card, and rules on one side, and Scenario Two map area, set-up card, and rules on the other.
-Eight scenarios (plus the learning scenario) allow players to vary their level of involvement, complexity, and starting point; from introductory to full campaign.
-An assymetrical sequence of play which highlights Axis armored breakthroughs and Soviet difficulties in combined arms warfare, detailed air rules which integrate with land combat, and weather rules.
-Incredibly detailed Order of Battle, including artillery, rocket artillery, engineers, bridge units, armored trains, and much more.
-Modifications to the proven Typhoon system include revised overrun and Soviet surrender procedures, as well as a new non-op Soviet HQ system to simulate the rigid, yet fragile, Soviet Command structure.
-Extensive bibliography and design/historical notes

Comments: Another month, another step closer to earning a reprint the old-fashioned way.

The info:

A Note About The New Reprint Editions (as of October, 2010): This will be a significantly enhanced product from the previous version. Specifically, this Reprint Edition will include all battles from Alexander Deluxe plus the battles from Diadochoi and Phalanx, as well as a few "bonus battles" that we are still working on.

Anticipated Reprint Edition Components:

9x12x3 box
4 backprinted maps
5 counter sheets
GBoH Series rule book
3 x scenario books
Several player aid cards (tba)
1 x D10

Comment: February's update solidified this as a 2Q printing, and that had the predictable effect on orders, carrying it decisively over the 500 mark. Assuming it arrives this spring, it will actually be my first P500 order to be printed!

Info:

PAX ROMANA covers the Europe from 300 BC through the end of the 1st century BC, when control of the Mediterranean was in a state of flux with four empires possible. And it does so with a scale and system that is filled with decision-making tension but also highly accessible and easy to play. The emphasis is on strategic operations, from raising armies to colonizing outlying areas, to fighting barbarian incursions, to maintaining political stability at home.

Each turn represents 25 years, with the movement of forces and the shifting of power occurring at a proportionately very large scale.

The Second Edition of Pax Romana both updates and upgrades the game. The map is now a fully MOUNTED map (as in Twilight Struggle Deluxe, Labyrinth, etc). Any errata from the original game has been corrected and included, with the Rulebook, Playbook, and Charts and Tables having undergone a thorough edit and revision to produce their second Living Rules versions. The counters and scenarios that appeared in C3i magazine #19 are part of the package as well, along with two additional new scenarios (including an additional 3-player scenario and a shorter 4-player campaign scenario), and a separate sheet of round money markers have replaced the square markers used for Talents in the original. Finally, the cards will be given new artwork to give them more visual appeal. Also included are new "named" counters for the most significant elite leaders of the period, including Hannibal, Scipio, and Seleucus.

The single most frequent request from players has been the addition of player "mats". Pax Second Edition has four of these, one for each power, each one customized to reflect the different needs and interests of that power.

For those who want to upgrade from the 1st Edition, spares willl be available for purchase of all the new components (set of five countersheets, new card deck, player mats, and the set of new rulebook, playbook, and player-aid cards). The 2nd Edition mounted map is available for P500 purchase now.

Comment: Despite hitting its numbers this will probably be waiting until 2015, in part because Berg is occupied with all the OTHER games he's making and that's keeping him from wrapping up a few tweaks to this one. It will come in time, though.
