Ben and I had a fabulous first-ever IndyCon this year. It was a great time. Thanks especially to Dave, Tami, Adam, and Krista for all of their hard work setting up the event. We are already looking forward to next year!

We arrived on Friday (late morning) and played this right out of the gate. Thanks to Todd and Chris S. for teaching and putting up with us. (Some of the iconography didn't stick well in my memory, so I was repeatedly asking what things meant. Ben was doing things that didn't get him points.) With some games, people talk about "screwage" but I feel like the screwage potential in this game is from yourself. Those gears'll getcha.

This must have been before Todd filled up the crystal track with skulls. I maxed out on workers but couldn't use them well because I was always running out of corn. Todd won and Chris was 2nd.

After Tzolk'in, we wanted to play something 5-player with Patrick, Julia, and Chris H, and ended up with Belfort. I liked the art in this game, and the connection between the worker placement and area control. (Some of the subtleties of the mechanics didn't really grab me, though.) Patrick taught (thanks!), but wasn't very happy with me because I kept taking the action he wanted.

Julia won...I might've come in 2nd? (lost my sheet from Friday...*grumble*)

*Note from Ben: He liked the Librarians' Guild and the Library.

I was anxious to get back from our dinner at the mall so I could play this one with Denise and Anna. (Thanks for teaching, Denise!) Ben wasn't signed up but got recruited for dressmaking anyway, along with Adam W. As I've said on other lists, Rococo is charming and very reminiscent of Fresco. I tried to buy a few decorations in addition to the dressmaking, but they were expensive and not worth a lot of points. Anna's dresses were the most fashionable!

Denise and Kevin played this classic with Ben and me to finish out the night. Denise built the Sewer and built the most impressive stockpile I've ever seen -- her board was tilted (would've made a good photo). I fell victim to the &@$%# Forum Romanum and was never able to fulfill the conditions. Denise won!

On Saturday morning I ran into Dan and Alan setting up BattleCON (which was one of Ben's & my contributions to the game library), so I showed Dan the basics and we played a couple sample turns. I think Alexian and Marmelee were the characters we had. (Didn't have much time because we were in the path of an oncoming Netrunner tournament.)

Meanwhile, Ben and Alan played a quick round of Battle Line. Alan won.

Since we had run into Alan, the three of us played Terra Mystica as we had planned, and recruited Scott to join us. Huge props to Alan for teaching so patiently -- there were several times during the game when I was frustrated with trying to follow the finer points. I suspect a second play would go more smoothly. I played as the Witches and Ben was the Nomads. Scott was the Swarmlings, but I don't remember Alan's faction (his board was farthest away from me).

I really liked this game and would definitely play it again sometime. The feature where you uncover income on your player board as you place pieces on the main board was really slick. The power bowls were a little strange, but I didn't mind them too much. Pretty art, too. Anyway, Scott shrewdly used his shipping to pull off the win. Alan was in 2nd.

One of my favorite game reviewers loved The Duke, so Ben and I wanted to try it on a real copy instead of the jankety PnP I made that has been sitting in our dining room unplayed for months. Anyway, Ben won two in a row. In the second game in particular, he check-duked me and I couldn't get out.

I liked the graphics on each of the pieces and the fact that the movement patterns would change as you moved stuff around, but I never had a feel for what was a good move or what would constitute a good strategy. If someone (Phil?) could give me advice on this, and if I could have a better sense of the consequences of different decisions (placement, etc), I might like this game more. Ben enjoyed it and it really is a great abstract. Not sure if we'll buy it.

Hoo boy...what can I say about this one? Phil graciously taught us and we played with Scott, Dave, and his wife (so sorry I forgot your name!). For most of us (possible exception of Scott, who seemed to actually get it), this thing went downhill FAST. The word "nightmare" was used at one point, and not by me. I discarded machine after machine and other people did too. In all fairness, things could have been better if I had A) known what I was getting into when I placed my first two colors, and B) known that I could buy more colors for certain machines.

My ultimate impression was not that I hated this game, but that it hated me. I'd play again, but probably only if bribery or coercion were involved.

Didn't actually play this, but Ben and I were thrilled that he won it in the raffle! I've heard all sorts of good things about it, and look forward to being able to learn the complex rules and really try it out. We love another one of Vlaada's games, Dungeon Petz. Thanks to all of the generous IndyCon sponsors, including The Game Preserve!

Ben and I were debating when we should leave on Saturday night, and I wanted to take another trip around the room to see what folks were playing. Chris and Kevin had the game set up (I think it was another raffle item) and it looked REALLY cool, so I pointed and said "Hey! Rampage!" It turns out if you exclaim the name of a game and act excited, nice guys will kindly invite you to play. So Ben and I sat down, learned all about flicking our pieces, the breath action, and how many meeples we could eat. We had a fantastic time and demolished the board (I took this pic way too late in the game because I was so preoccupied with destruction, but here goes):

Todd stopped by and complimented the sophistication of the game, noting that it was just too much of a brain-burner for him.

Kevin won -- winning a PS4 also turns you into a rampaging dinosaur. Thanks for letting us play with you guys, it was truly a blast and now I am convinced we have to have Rampage. (Probably from The Game Preserve.)

This was it on Sunday. One game and one game only: Robinson Crusoe. I brought my trusty laptop to the hotel so we could learn from the excellent PDF that is available here on BGG. Fortunately for us, David came along and joined us. None of us had ever played before, but we had three people contributing to figuring things out, so we did just fine. David was the soldier, Ben was the carpenter, and I was the cook. (didn't know the cards had a female side though! will use that in the future)

We built up some positive momentum in the first few rounds and did well after that. We were never really in danger of losing anyone, and had good success building various items to aid us in our quest. In fact, we almost wondered if we were getting a rule wrong somewhere because it was supposed to be really hard and we didn't suffer too much. But I've heard it gets a lot harder after the first scenario? Anyway, I thought this game was fabulous (another one for the wish list) and it was worth it to come back on Sunday in the snow to give this a whirl and say hi to everyone again.

Here are the games I was hoping to play but couldn't find the right opportunity: Nations, Tokaido, Legends of Andor, Ginkgopolis, and Coconuts (although Rampage was a great substitute). But it wouldn't do to have an empty "want-to-play" list anyway, right?

Thanks to everyone for an excellent and memorable con! Looking forward to 2015!
