You know what I mean. If you don't, read the first few entries to get the idea.

Of course I probably like these songs MORE now due to their use in scenes of some of my favorite movies and TV shows. So I use "ruined" to indicate the juxtaposition of the original feel/emotion of the songs to the emotions or content of the scenes they were used in.

"Stuck in the Middle With You" by Steelers Wheel. Used in "Reservoir Dogs".

Yeah, this is probably the poster child for this sort of thing. While I like many of Tarantino's films, the main thing I remember from his first is the juxtaposition of this song with the scene it plays over.

"Windy" by The Association. Used in Ep12 of season three of "Breaking Bad".

The most recent one I've experienced and the inspiration for this list. A totally inappropriate (and hilarious) use of an innocuous pop song from the late '60s. Check out the repetitious action choreographed to the beat of the song at certain moments.

Since I was born in '64 and had four older sisters, this song was definitely very familiar for me.

"Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Donovan. Used in "Zodiac".

While this song is probably one of the most somber Donovan ever recorded, it is not nearly as dark as the scene it plays over in this movie.

The producers of the movie also get bonus points for casting Donovan's daughter (Ione Skye) in a small role in the film.

"Happy Heart" by Andy Williams. Used in "Shallow Grave".

A most ironic use of this song as the three main characters in this film are neither happy nor have any sort of compassion whatsoever. And while Ewan McGregor does end the film laughing (with this song playing over the scene),
Spoiler (click to reveal)
he is doing so while pinned to the kitchen floor by a rather large knife through his shoulder.

One of the few films (if not the only one) to star both a Jedi Master and a Time Lord.

"Don't Stop Believing" by Journey. Not that I much liked the song to begin with, but after seeing Monster, the song carries depressing overtones. It's used first in Monster as the soundtrack of hope for the main character as she starts to turn her life around... and then it's used as the end credit music. What happens in between is gut-wrenching and heart-rending, horrible and largely true.

I wouldn't say Kill Bill ruined Twisted Nerve for me, because that was the first place I'd ever heard it, but the jaunty whistling while Darryl Hannah is prepping to kill Uma Thurman definitely seems like it fits with this theme.

Tarantino seems to be able to do this really well, in addition to using songs that wouldn't seem like they would fit, but then having them make the scene memorable. The fight scene between Thurman and Lucy Liu at the end of Kill Bill with "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" as the soundtrack probably seemed daft at first, but it's fantastic as a finished product.

This isn't an instance of ruining a song, but instead of a song ruining (or at least harming) a soundtrack.

The songs from Rocky IV make up one of the best soundtracks ever, and arguably the best workout mix ever compiled. Eye of the Tiger, Hearts on Fire, No Easy Way Out; tons of great songs which are interrupted by the Chipmunks Christmas song. It's not so much of a problem now that everything is digital, but I remember having the cd back in high school and having to stop working out just to skip over that song. angry

More Donovan. "Atlantis" in "Goodfellas." How can they associate a flower child with such violence?

"Truckin'" by The Grateful Dead, used in Munchies.

This was a cheesy, horror/comedy, Gremlins parody... And they used "Truckin'" over & over again. I saw it once on video at a friend's place when I was a teenager, and I still think of it every time I hear the song.

Wonderful Wonderful by Johnny Mathis used (via a similar sounding cover) in the episode "Home" in X-files.

Befitting the theme of this list it is a song not thought of as creepy used in what is probably in the running for most creepy episode of a show ever.
