Welcome to Solitaire Games on Your Table for April 2014

It’s that time of year: The Rainy Season. You know what that means. There will be plenty of time spent indoors for us to enjoy solitaire gaming. What a good month for it too. We have the 1st annual Secret Soloist Gift Exchange going on, the 1 Player Gaming Awards are taking place, and the 1 Player Guild Trading Post just launched. So many fun ways to enjoy solitaire gaming.

The SGOYT is a great place to not only share our solitaire gaming adventures but to share in the adventures of our fellow solo gamers. The SGOYT is our little corner of the internet, and let's work on keeping it the best part of BGG.

Make sure to check out the 1 Player guild and subscribe to the Solitaire Games on Your Table Monthly Geeklist SUBSCRIPTION THREAD. Also take a look at 2014 SGoyT Challenges SUBSCRIPTION. There are a handful of fun challenges that take place every month. There really is a lot of great stuff going on and you don't want to miss it.

Warning

This is important, so make sure to read carefully. SGOYT will make you spend money. There's really nothing we can do about it. And really, we all love buying new games don't we. Just don't say I didn't warn you.

The Contest

It's becoming a tradition for the host of each month's SGOYT to hold a contest. So here is mine:

Play a solitaire game, currently sitting on your shelf, that you have never played.

Everyone who does so, will be a winner! No really, It's great to get that one game played, and you know which game I'm talking about. But seriously, folks. I will select 5 random people who play an unplayed game to each receive 8 .

Trading Post

Visit the 1 Player Guild Trading Post. It's a great place to buy, sell, and trade games.

1 Player Gaming Awards

The 1 Player Guild just launched our very first gaming awards. FINAL VOTING IS ON!!! It will run until May 12th. Make sure to head over and nominate some great solitaire games.

Discussion Thread
1 Player Gaming Awards 2014- The Final voting polls are CLOSED- Official results now available (Poll free discussion thread)

Voting thread
1Player Gaming Awards- Final Voting Polls are OPEN!

Future SGOYT Hosts

Here are the hosts for the coming months. Let's make sure to thank everyone who volunteers their time to make the 1 Player Guild and SGOYT so awesome. If you are interested in hosting an upcoming SGOYT, send me a GeekMail and I'll make sure you get put on the list.

This has been on my shelf now since January. I will take up Ryan's challenge and play it this month. First though, I am posting it here to guilt myself into doing it for sure.

Edit:
Been a rough couple months for gaming and especially solo gaming for me as I started back to work full time and the dreaded Japanese pollen assault has been in full effect. I never really had allergies before moving here and now they hit like a Mack truck and refuse to go away. I did manage two games of Friday at level 4 a few weeks ago but my pollen addled brain couldn't cope with the hazards and I had to pack it up.

Drugs to the Rescue! Couple days ago I gave up on the hay-fever ever going away on it's own and bought up some drugs at the local chemist. Not being able to read the package meant I got something that wiped me out so much that I actually fell asleep in my chair while teaching and I teach Kinder! Even their noise and rambunctiousness had no effect. Back to the chemist with a note from my co-teacher and I'm feeling better than I have in near two months.

Combine this new found clarity with the arrival of my Soloist Exchange Games and my wife going on a business trip for the next few nights and we are set for some serious solo gaming. Reading the rulebook for Nuklear now in preparation.

Edit 2: Well Damn it, I tried. Printed out the Ver 1.3 rules and then printed them again on the fancy color printer as the first print was crap, spiral bound the new rulebook, read the bloody thing, got the board (it's big!) and chits out and turned to the first scenario when the phone rang. It was my wife. She was almost home and was bringing a friend for after work beers. We have only one table. I folded the board and put it and the chits back in the box and the whole thing back on the shelf. Damn all of you and your fancy tables over on the Your Play Space thread!

First contribution to a SGOYT!

Barely beat Hal at 53 to 49. This is the first time around in which I got everything down right as far as rules and scoring.

Love this game. Was pleasantly surprised that this included a solitaire version. It's also very pretty to look at as the districts expand.

Got Arkham Horror after loving Eldritch Horror, and it does not disappoint at all. I got the Dunwich expansion which has nicely bulked up the encounter decks. Tried a 3 investigator game and failed miserably, then a 4 investigator game and failed again - but I was learning the tic tac's. Tried one of the "easier" Great Old One's with 4 investigators again, and this time success - literally just before they woke up I got the six sealed gates. I love the Lovecraft mythos, and this has made me look into the books. Tempted by Elder Sign as it seems to have come back into stock in the UK.

By the way, having a large table to leave the game set up has been essential!

Next for me are Pathfinder Stone Giants, some Lord of the Rings and then to try Caverna properly.

My last entry for March is my second for April.

Managed to squeeze it in after PACG and before picking up the kids.

Played with 2 dwarfs and got 43 victory points.

Now I have to think about this months's SGOYT challenge.

I have Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game and Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of Ashardalon Board Game sitting unplayed on my shelf since the end of February. Bought them in a fit of excitement when I saw them at my local shop and because I love Dungeons & Dragons: The Legend of Drizzt Board Game.

The trouble is they are so similar to LOD that I haven't felt any urgency to play them as I do when there are new rules to learn and new components to try out.

Maybe one or both this month. Possibly neither.

This game arrived a few days ago but finally cracked it open today for a first ever play. Loved it, flowed nicely but a few questions popped up of course, nothing game breaking and when it was important an answer was found online pretty quickly.

Anyway, I was doing quite well until I disturbed a tiger in the jungle whilst only holding a pointy stick, then Friday went and got himself killed trying to fix the roof before the bad weather really hit us. Despite having the bonfire almost complete I succumbed to my wounds, a long and lonely death.

Can't wait to get back to it.

I have the 2004 game, and this has been on my shelf since 2006. I've finally decided to give this game a try. My kids are still a little too young to play this so I'm going to play this solitaire. I broke the shrink wrap and am in the process of separating the player cards into their appropriate player teams. Once I finish that, I'm planning on playing a season as the Phillies (my favorite team), mimicking this season's schedule, under the basic strategy rules. Looking forward to getting the season started.

Having received HE last week I was eager to play asap. The big idea is to combine Hapsburg Eclipse and Ottoman Sunset and thus create a "massive" sologame about a war that started exactly hundred years ago. At first I wasn't really impressed by OS but luckily I've learned to appreciate it. A logical purchase was HE and until now I don't regret it. These kind of games really give the feeling to be "a head of state" (not per se a military leader) and trying to distribute the small amount of resources in such a way that the enemy is kept away from the capital and your "home country" simply survives the war. After a few plays to get familiar with HE I'm intending to combine the two and maybe, somewhere in the future, I'll be able to add Germany to these two and do WW1 all over again. Based upon earlier results with OS it will probably end up in the most historical way...

Man, it really has been too long since this saw some table time. I'm not sure why it slipped, I think the combo of Sentinels of the Multiverse and Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Base Set on my 10x10 list were the biggest spanner in the works, but I was playing this very heavily, by the end of last year, and had finally sprung for the first six adventure packs, and the first big-box expansion.

All those expansions are still in shrink wrap. cry

I wanted to master the base set quests, using base set cards, but I'm beginning to doubt that will happen. Tonight I decided to play a friendly, not the notorious journey down the river (nor the ludicrously tough final quest), but a welcome back round with the flies and spiders.

I think it's fair to say, I pretty much have this quest squared away now. I took Aragorn, Theodred and Glorfindel (who, this evening, replaced Beravor - and that seems like a smart substitution which I will run with for a time now) on a relaxing stroll through the forest - only to meet upset with drawing a treachery card on the first turn (the one that won't let you ready up unless you spend two resources). Not to have my confidence dented, I drew an early surprise attack, which let Gandalf tag into the ring for a quick tumble, adding some much needed cards to my hand. Glorfindel bore the curse with quiet dignity, and subdued the effect of it with the Steward of Gondor title, which let him pay his dues and get back into the action, each round.

All told, once Aragorn donned Celebrian's Stone, this fight was all but over. I steamrolled through the locations, and Ungoliant's Spawn stepped straight into a Forest Snare. Unable to put up a fight, I played with the orcs defending him, and then put him to the sword (and the reappearing Gandalf's wand) in two turns.

The game felt almost as brief as some of my Pathfinder sessions, but I think there's just more to get to grips with here. I love the newer game, but sinking into this, tonight, reminded me that I shouldn't be neglecting it. This is a great game, which I have only ever played single-handed and solo. I'm surprised it doesn't feature in these geeklists more often.

More plays this month, trying to get to 10 for the 10x10 challenge.

Going for the Military Victory once again (have to knock out 3 fronts to do this). Got rid of the Brits and the Chinese fairly early. Brits came back, and when the 1st Mid War card was played, Nimitz was on Iwo Jima. Knocked out the Brits a 2nd time, and the Chinese couldn't get back in the battle. While I was working on MacArthur, Nimitz got to Okinawa, and even missed a couple rolls trying to penetrate the Home Islands.

But MacArthur stubbornly refused to retreat and the Brits got back in the war once more.

Then came the 1st Late War card, and all 3 resources went to a big fat ZERO-- game over.

Still, this Military Victory thing has something going for it, so I'll try that at least a few more times.

My plays of WMTtE this month

Great little game I've been sinking plays into this week. Its your fleet against AI controlled doomsday machine(s). Very challenging, lots of interesting decisions, and more than a dash of luck. You'll lose more than you win but have a great time doing so.

Later in the month when VPG gets it shipped to me its going to be replaced on my table by Cruel Necessity

I saw Jason Young's video on "To the Last Man" and was really taken with the aesthetic of that game. So I looked into what Nuts! publishing had to offer and sure enough, one of their games caught my interest. Urban warfare in the Iraq war? Sounds like a plan. So I found a copy in the marketplace for what I think was a reasonable price (discounted for a dent, too).

Set up and ready to roll. This game looks like it will be tense and tough. Hopefully, that pans out.

4-2-14: Really tired this evening. I read the rules for the first couple parts of the turn sequence. This is definitely going to be one of those games that has to "click" at some point, as most of them do. The rule text doesn't give a great idea of what exactly happens, but there are examples I haven't checked yet and I'll be looking for videos/posts to help clarify. At the rate I'm going, I'll actually play a turn over the weekend.

4-4-14: Managed 2 turns of this tonight. A lot of what goes on in this game is pretty simple, but man... there's something about the rulebook that just doesn't click with me. Some of it is poorly organized, though I can see why they did it the way they did. Some of it is poorly worded/explained, though once I understand the mechanic I can see what they were getting at.

The game itself is pretty fun thus far even though I've done little more than clear a couple buildings. I don't see this rocketing to my top 5, but it definitely gives me a unique experience when compared to anything else I have.

4-6-14: Two more turns tonight. It's starting to fall into place now. Most of the basic combat and movement is straightforward. The only thing that's a little fiddly to keep up with how/when suspect markers activate and how/when your units take sniper fire.

It doesn't seem like there are a wide variety of decisions in this game, HOWEVER, the decisions you do make can be pretty tense. It's the classic dilemma of needing to press forward, but not put your guys at more risk than necessary. The game has also created a good narrative thus far. I have one strong unit working his way up the eastern flank which is good, but the other units keep heading away from him chasing insurgents. I could send a unit back toward the flanking unit, but that's committing valuable resources to just running around. And if my flanking unit is killed, then insurgents may flood back down that eastern side. On the other end of the map, I have a unit pinned in the street. The only way he gets automatically unpinned is by having all the insurgents in adjacent buildings taken out, which I have a guy working on. Otherwise, that unit has to keep rolling a die every turn and the odds are not in its favor.

There's also air support missions you can run, though they are pretty limited. I flew a UAV mission to reveal suspects in 2 zones and as luck would have it all the scans came up negative. I now have a nice big hole in the middle of a block that I can run marines into and create a nice strong point to expand from.

Yeah... I'm liking this one. It seems to play a little slow, but I'm sure once I get the rules down it will move at a good clip.

4-7-14: Played one more turn and a half tonight. I definitely have a handle on the basic rules, but I need to dig in to the forums and that tactics sheet to figure out some of the nuances (like assaulting the mosque if my tank is in the open-ground space). I realized partway through that last turn that I had missed a couple of rules that would have swayed things substantially (and I lost a couple more units) so I decided to call it a game.

Plus, I have a few other things I want to get to the table over the next few days (like my first crack at Flashpoint solo to use my new toys). I'll be getting back to this game within a week or so so I don't forget the rules.

I think this one is going to work out well and present a good challenge. When insurgents start flooding the zones, the decisions on who/when/where to fire/move/assault become pretty tricky. I like it.

Lots of parenthesis in that update (just thought I'd acknowledge that).

Well, I know this isn't exactly the sort of thing you mean, but technically, it counts. It's been on the shelf a couple of weeks, and it's solo. I played it 10 times tonight. None of them was very satisfying. I'll hang onto it a bit so my husband has a chance to try it, but I think this goes in the trade pile...

This month, and actually all March, I am playing a hell all lot of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
It's quite abstract, but I LOVE the dice management. I easily beat lvl 0, 2 and 4, and I am struggling with lvl 6, where I usually end by the wire, where it's the last roll that usually wins me the game or makes me end with a loss.
I don't see myself playing lvl 8, since I figure it will be 99% luck based.

I place This game in the same category as Dungeon Roll (another game I am playing a lot with) as both are fast, easy to setup and tear down, dice management games.

I am looking for a good deal for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug to play both games back to back, but until I can find a good price for it, I will stick with Unexpected Journey alone.

Another game I am playing (but a lot less then what I did in January, February and March) is Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Base Set.
I was playing scenario 2 of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Adventure Deck 3: The Hook Mountain Massacre adventure, with Kyra, Ezren and Valeros... And Ezren perished under PappaGrawl's hits.

Luckily, Ezren has a twin brother that is going to take his place, so my party won't be left without a Mage.

Sadly, I am losing interest in PACG, though: since I got it, I played the hell out of it... But now, it's becoming a bit repetitive. I will wait to finish adventure 3 before I get adventure 4.

EDIT: April 4th 2014: More games played, and according to the spirit of theis month's list, I decided to play a game on my shelf that I haven't touched in many many months (like 20 months): I played Red November.

I finally won!! WooT!!

So I have started this - I will qualify this by saying that I also love Lord of the Rings LCG, and own the base set, Khazad Dum, Black Riders, and 4 or 5 of the better adventure packs. This is just been played with in an exploratory manner to begin with, but I am really enjoying the Hobbit "theme".

LOTR is such a fabulous solo game and I highly recommend it to those who play solitaire. It is challenging, detailed, well themed, loads to collect if you wish to, but it is not necessary to. I just wish FFG would do another card game such as Cthullu or Netrunner with a good solo component.

I was away from home for a couple of days and returned to find that this had arrived! I promptly punched the counters, set it up, and started playing. So far I'm quite impressed. A major difference from other games in the States of Siege series is that in this one you have an initial period in which you expand your empire and claim economic benefits, and only after that do hostile powers begin to cause problems. I've only played through that initial period at this point, but it's a fun and innovative approach that gives you more control over your true starting position.

The topic is also unique, and the cards have a lot of historical text on them so you can learn more about the cultures reflected in the game.

The components are up to VPG's recent high standards: in particular I was pleasantly surprised by the jigsaw board, which fits together neatly and provides a nice, stable playing area. One quibble I do have is that the pieces representing foreign armies are supposed to fit into little bases so they stand up, but the holes in the bases are too small for the pieces: I couldn't get them to insert properly without risking damage.

Don't mess with 19th century Zulus on your lunch break.

An ignoble defeat is all I have to show from it.

How am I supposed to get back to work after that?

Still enjoying this one.

In fact all the small box VPG games I have bought have been top notch.

Received this game yesterday and played my first solo game this morning, using this solo variant. I only move the neutral Targi one step further if the spot they land on after a die roll is illegal, which means it can happen that two neutral Targi end up on opposing sides resulting in only one crossing point or even none at all (the latter didn't happen yet). I also use the first addition suggested in the thread above.

Solo game in progress

Using this variant I scored 39 points in my first game. The variant works very well and I'm looking forward to some more plays of this during the month to see what those 39 points are worth.

Solo game finished

Edit April, 7th:
Interestingly, I finished my second game with exactly 39 points again, despite quite a different approach. Too bad I didn't have a gold before the last raid.

Result of my 2nd game
