The idea behind these lists is to post what you're currently playing, or just played. It's interesting to see who's playing what, to see if people are playing the same things, and to ask questions that might otherwise be relegated to a forum about a game with the benefit of the responses coming from someone who has it fresh on their mind.

Here's last month's list: What We're Playing - March 2014

Battlelore, Battlelore, Battlelore!

Lots of fun, in a game that seems to have countless interactions and combinations. Great team, lovely idea for a light wargame that actually offers interesting options: mustering the army requires a sort of "deck building", strategy is required for considering the possible interactions with the board, and games never last more than 90 minutes, which is perfect for the second part of the evening in days you don't have much time.

Played 32 games in the last two months and a half, and keep on loving it!

Last night, we played Guildhall with Guildhall: Job Faire as part of our 10x10 list. This was our 5th play and we continued with randomly choosing cards. We got Dancer, Hunter, Historian, Trader, Robber, and Bricklayer. I did a great! I was really careful on which cards I played and which stacks I turned in to give my husband the least benefit and me the highest benefit. So I often played cards into my guildhall that matched his so he couldn't take them with the trader. Though this also hobbled me, I made it work by turning a stack in for the 3 point card that allows you to put any number of cards from your hand into your guildhall and I was able to complete 2 more stacks this way. Later I got the 2 point card that allowed me to steal a stack from an opponent. I traded in my historian stack, stole my husband's stack of 4 historians and used the hunter to take the historian I needed. At one point, I had 3 stacks ready to turn in. I can thank a lot of my success to the bricklayers that kept my hand full of cards. That was the first stack I completed and really got me ahead. So the end score was me with 22 and my husband 12. This was another great game, full of challenge and strategy. This game just keeps getting better with each play and I constantly look forward to playing again with a random set.

Today, we got Buccaneer Bones in the mail. We played this three times in a row. I won once and my husband won twice. It's a very light, fun dice game. The theme really comes across and the components are fantastic! I'm so glad I supported the Kickstarter because we got 4 additional player colors so we can play up to 8. This is definitely going to go to family events as it's a very casual and fun game. The only thing we noticed is that whoever went first was the winner. This may just be for 2 player games, but we'll see. It's not a big deal anyway since it's just something fun to do to pass the time.

Yeah, another distraction from our 10x10 list.

This was kind of a fun engine building game. Quick, easy to teach and a race right up to the end. First game that I can remember that my wife and I hit the advertised time on, all be it with only us two instead of 4, but we hit that mark. Looking forward to more plays of this one.

As expected, once we finally started playing this Innovation expansion, we played it a lot. Our first game was on Sunday and our tenth was on Wednesday . Yay for crossing another item off the 10x10 list!

Needless to say, we enjoyed it. It keeps all the fun and craziness of basic Innovation, but sort of throws it on its head: you get special expansion cards as share bonuses, so suddenly maintaining a symbol lead isn't quite as desirable as it used to be. Some of the expansion cards are ridiculous—my fiancé once managed to get six achievements in a single action—but they're hard enough to get ahold of that they just add a bit of spice rather than feeling broken.

I'm happy to own this one.

It's been quite a while since we played so we stuck with the beginner cards, but we did draft. I think I did a pretty good job of choosing cards and organizing them by the 3 seasons. I took some risks and played very well, but my husband took even riskier moves and manage to win by a slim margin. He won 139 to my 127, but almost all of his points were in his cards while I had more crystals. For example, I played a familiar that made each player put a magic item back in their hand. I bounced the item that gave me 20 crystals, which was nice, but my husband bounced an item that allowed him to draw a card and put it into play for free. He drew the card that is worth 30 points!! It normally costs 20 crystals, but he got it for free! Both of our eyes bugged out at that. And in the last round, he decided to take the die to draw a card and he was able to play it even though he only had 2 tokens. I am definitely glad we put this on our 10x10 list because this game has a lot of depth to it. Also glad we have the 1st expansion and the second one is on its way.

Whoo, this game has a lot of strategic options, which can be overwhelming on the first play. I had a pretty good engine, but didn't fully utilize it. I had the relic ship territory which gave me an extra die and if it ever was removed, it'd only cost 1 ore and 1 fuel to get back. But what I was missing was a card that allowed me to adjust the value of dice so I could use the relic die with a value 6 to remove it and immediately put a colony on the planet. Since this is a race to get all your colonies onto the planet, whoever does this the fastest wins. My husband was just so much more efficient with his actions and combining abilities better. This is going to be one of those games that I don't really get until the 3rd or 4th play. Needless to say, my husband caught on really quickly. He won 14 to my 10.

Hi Sarah and all !

So - of course main focus is on the 10 x 10 challenge, hardcore please!
But there has to be a change sometimes, right?

I recently remembered how much I like this game and I play it here and there.

BTW - I didn´t expect to be the 10x10 challenge to be so hardcore, right now I´m at 37/100, quite alright I think though.

See you

Sat, Apr 5

Yesterday we stopped by the board game cafe for a bit. We said hi to some friends playing Kingsburg, then asked to join a couple (who we didn't know) just starting to set up Arkham Horror. He hadn't played in a couple years, and she had never played, so we were able to help out a lot with the rules.

We ended up with a 5 player game, as another friend of ours showed up just as we finished the first turn and jumped in on the second turn. We lost though, with too many gates open. We had a ton of really tough monsters, several that sent multiple investigators to the asylum or hospital. With this being base game only, that meant the loss of a lot of assets instead of collecting madness/injury cards.

As the game ended, our new friends had another friend show up. We gave them a quick rundown of the rules for Terror in Meeple City before we left for dinner.

After dinner, we played a 3 player game of DotR. Well, technically 2, but I'm not counting the first one because we lost really really early (got the Monarch City card, which put us at 5 minions in Monarch City).

The second round we had the Rogue (new player), the Chaos Wizard (Darin) and the Seeker (me). We won this one, with the land getting close to too corrupted to recover.

We were introduced to this tiny quick game at TableTop Day, and I loved it immediately. The gameplay is incredibly straightforward: you start with some cards, and you take turns placing them in the correct chronological order in the timeline that you're constructing in the middle of the table. We played it three times in a row, and I would happily have played again. I felt like it took the best parts of trivia games (learning things and demonstrating what you know) and eliminated most of the bad stuff (the slowness of asking questions, waiting around on other people's turns). There was still a fair bit of randomness in that some of the cards are much easier than others, and some of the dates that they gave for certain discoveries seemed a bit odd, but the playtime is short enough that that doesn't really matter.

So then on our way out we bought our own copy of Timeline: Historical Events, which is the same game but with events rather than discoveries—I figure I can list them both in the same item. We played this one five times at home, basically until we'd gone through the whole deck once. It wasn't quite as much fun, possibly because we had only two players, or possibly because of the nature of historical events: either you know what event they mean, in which case you probably have a pretty good idea of where it goes, or you've never heard of the thing, in which case the guessing and learning process isn't that effective because you still don't know anything about the context. But I still want to play this more, because it will be a fun way to memorize dates that I really should know.

We may also have ordered the Inventions version from Amazon, since it was on sale for TableTop Day whistle

I was very pleasantly surprised by this game: I'm not sure I would have picked it up if we hadn't been restricted to a set list of TableTop games, but I actually loved it, and I'm not quite sure why. There's a lot of dice rolling, which is not usually my favourite thing, and there isn't really much planning to be done. But the theme is super fun, wandering around an old museum trying to prevent the arrival of the Ancient One, and I liked the story element and the individual characters. We don't play a lot of RPG/D&D-type games, maybe because of the time and effort involved or maybe just because we've never really tried them, but I want to get into that type of gaming more—especially seeing how much I enjoyed this watered-down version of the concept.

I *know* we never play 4-hour games, but I really want to try Arkham Horror now....

And in the meantime, we'll be buying our own copy of Elder Sign

I'm still super behind on Saturday's plays, but I'm going to go ahead with listing current plays or else it will just be hopeless.

We actually bought this Seasons expansion at the FLGS on Saturday. Yay! We wanted to get this as soon as it came out, but didn't really have $80 more of games that we needed to get the free shipping. So we hemmed and hawed about what to do, not actually realizing that we had a local game store (the place where we went on Saturday was about 45 minutes away by public transit, and doesn't list inventory online). We were super excited to spot this on the shelf when we got there, especially because it was hidden behind a copy of the older expansion, so we didn't notice it immediately.

We've played base Seasons, or the first expansion, a combined total of 41 times—so obviously we really like the game, but it was time for something new. I have a habit of over-playing games I like until I suddenly reach the point of burnout....

Anyway, we broke this out for the first time on Sunday night, even though I was feeling sort of sick and headachy. That, combined with some horrible cards, made for a pretty unpleasant experience. We knew ahead of time that there was one card we would probably want to remove from the game—you have to pay an energy to pass it from player to player, and when it's in front of you, you can't gain any crystals—which is basically the whole point of the game. But I figured we should leave it in until we'd tried it once. And of course, it came up in that first game, when I already wasn't feeling great. Not fun at all. But it's gone now, and good riddance.

Fortunately our second game, today, was much more pleasant. We had new cards that were actually interesting, not just boring or mean. Especially noteworthy was the Chalice of Eternity, which is like the Divine Chalice but repeatable. I got it too late in the game for it to be really effective (I just ended up paying a huge amount for one card), but I still liked it. And for whatever reason, this game ended up feeling really different than any I'd played before. I had a bunch of zero-point cards that either generated lots of energy or sacrificed themselves to crystallize energy at a good rate, so only about 20% of my final score actually came from the values on cards. This was probably a more effective strategy because of a new card that sacrifices an existing card to score 12 points, meaning at least one of those zero-point non-sacrificing cards could be put to good use (and actually, I drew the second sacrifice-to-score card in the course of the game).

We still don't really use the whole Enchantment concept, changing various rules of the game. We never used it with the previous expansion, and it looks like that isn't going to change. When we first played this, we tried drawing an Enchantment as well, and ended up just rejecting three in a row as not particularly interesting. Maybe we'll actually play with one eventually.

My fiancé picked up this game for $5 in a local auction where he was already buying something else, and at that price point it seems like a pretty decent purchase. It's a light dice-rolling filler, but it has a nice element of city building, and I think it plays even faster than the promised 15-minute playtime. We probably won't really play it much, but we did play it three times tonight, and I liked the second and third games more than the first one—it didn't seem quite so random once we knew what we were doing.

I just read a really good review of it, with nice pictures, if anyone wants to know more—I had never heard of it before, but apparently it was given out as an extra along with some other kickstarter.

Sunday night, since we just got the Science Fiction Double Feature expansion, we decided to just play with those to see how they worked. I chose Cyborg Apes & Time Travelers while my husband chose Shape-shifters & Super Spies. I really enjoyed the Cyborg Apes that pumped themselves up a lot and have actions to play on minions & bases. I really like the action that allows a minion to fly, which means they go to another base when it's scored. I had other cards that let me put actions back into my hand instead of being discarded so I kept flying a very strong ape around, one that gets +1 power for each action on it. Sadly, the Time Travelers did not pair well as they needed minions that had coming into play abilities to bounce them back to your hand. So that slowed me down, but I still played very well and gave my husband a challenge. The Spies give you lots of info, which is always good, and shape-shifters obviously mimic other minions so he was able to copy a lot of my strong apes. Not surprisingly, he won with 16 points to my 14. So while I know it'll be a slow combo, I want to try Cyborg Apes and Dinosaurs. I think Time Travelers would do well with Plants so that'll be something I'd like to try some day. I just love that was have so many possible choices now. Obviously some pairings are better than others, but half the fun is also figuring out what style of play you like and finding the factions that match you.

After dinner at my parent's house, we played King of Tokyo without the evolution cards. Good call because it was a little complicated for my mom. But she did pretty well as she was knocked out second, after my niece. My husband and nephew dominated, unsurprisingly, but what was surprising is that I managed to win with points! My nephew wasn't paying full attention to me as my husband was the much bigger threat. So he didn't kill me when he had the chance so I won the next turn. However, if he had killed me, my husband probably would have won. So I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Gaming has been a bit light for me so far this month. Did get in a quick play of the City; it was close, but Lisa beat me by about 4 points.

Still don't know why this little gem hasn't gotten a US release.

Been playing a lot of Legendary, as usual. Though Lisa had to adjust her randomizer; one of the new schemes in Paint the Town Red added a complication that needed extra coding.

We tried something new and different; we played a "campaign" of three games in a row (playing a co-op variant). After the first game we each got to pick a single hero and carry over 6 cost of cards from that hero, but the enemies all got harder. After the second game we could each carry over 12 cost from one or two heroes, but the difficulty when up even more. Kind of amusing, but hard to balance well. It was entertaining though.

We went to a games day on the 1st Saturday of April! I was very happy as I wasn't sure we would get to; we had people in doing roof repairs, and we had doubts they would be finished in time. But they were!

First up was Concordia. I like this game more and more with each play (and it made a good first impression to!) It seems like every time some new strategy wins. Granted, it's pretty much always Lisa winning, but lots of strategy variety.

We played with 5 players but it still moved very fast. I did terribly, but thoroughly enjoyed the game anyway.

I was really eager to try this after Sarah's recommendations, so I was very happy that one of the guys in the game group brought it. I think he played a total of 3 games with different sets of players!

This made a great first impression! Very intuitive to play, action packed, with cool tactics and interesting character advancement. I had a blast - even though I got eaten by a spike monster alien. The group won pretty handily overall; that dang critter just had some insane dice rolls attacking me!

We promptly bought ourselves a copy this week. Can't wait to start playing a campaign.
