Just the other day I was excited to try and teach my fiancee a game that I had got. Now we'd played lots of games before. She loves Dominion and we often crack out Love Letter and play other games with my family. This time though I made a mistake. I almost turned her off games altogether. Luckily she's still marrying me but I'll have to work my way up from near the bottom to get her to play some more intense games.

Here is a place to share your experiences of games gone wrong. What games have you tried to introduce to people that either turned them off, either completely or almost, from board games. Let's pool our knowledge of bad experiences to hopefully learn from them and become better teachers and discerners of how, when and who to play what game with.

Oh dear. It was late, I was soon to go home but I had this in the car outside. I asked my fiancee, "Hey would you like to learn a new game?" She said yes because she loves me. Oh how I should have known. I brought in the game and started setting up. The look on her face said it all though. The iconography, the sci-fi artwork, and our own tiredness combined made this a horrid decision. However I tried to teach the game, stumbling over my words, only just realising myself how difficult this game is to teach, especially to a non gamer! We lasted two turns and I bailed, her body language said it all and I could not bare the thought of her and I not playing games again! I saw the error in my ways and taught myself a valuable lesson. Fingers crossed this doesn't happen again...yeah right.

In the story "All the king's horses" a guerrilla chief forces a captured spy to play chess against him. Only instead of chess pieces, the spy has to use his family and comrades. And when a spy's piece is captured, the person representing that piece is murdered. I thought to myself, "Boy, it's like that guerrilla chief wants to turn people off board gaming!"

Yeah, I know.

It's cliché.

It's unfair.

It's judgmental.

But I have been at more than one gaming table where there's one dude just stinking up the place with his collection of unwashed fanboy odors. Distracting your opponent by perming their nosehair is bad gamesmanship and an easy way to turn off newcomers.

Not so long ago I had just learned this whole new world of games existed. I was so excited to spread the word that when people didn't "get it" I would get frustrated. I was not a good salesman. Thankfully now I have my emotions about it under control and know games truly are not for everyone.

"But when do I get to attack YOU!?!?"

Wrong crowd, in hindsight. You really can't force this stuff.

Yes, i know it's Munchkin - that was my first mistake...but it's wasn't me driving someone else off...it was them that nearly drove me off.

So, it's Christmas break...were all at the ancestral home enjoying the holiday...and my nephews and son want to play Munchkin, but they want to play with an adult too (they are all 14+...) My sister has already been roped in and I felt sorry for her so i decided to join in solidarity and support of her.

Then she has to back out because she's not feeling well...(it was legit) but i had no excuse. For the next hour i got to listen to all three of them read every line of text, crack every stupid joke, play at glacier paces...then talk ad nausium about the play they just made. IT WAS HELL!!!

The only good thing about it was I had been trying to convince my brother in law that we should play Axis and Allies with them before they all grow up...you know, like we did as kids. Yeah, i'm now cured of that idea! all my brother in law said about it was "your welcome".
