One of the most sobering and frightening geeklists for users has been...
Your Game Was Destroyed How?......Are You Serious!!. Don't read it till you're in a safe place with people you love!

Recently I had the opposite experience. Not as dramatic, but maybe worth sharing.

I love this game. I even started a geeklist asking why it's not more popular. And I nearly lost it last week.

Okay we had a series of earthquakes that started in 2010 and went to 2012, and many of my games got dented, but none destroyed. Following the earthquakes we moved, the games survived. Then my wife threw me out last year ( a late casualty of the quakes), the games were moved again! Then my landlord announced my flat needed quake repairs so I've had to move again, then in a few weeks I need to move back again.

I live in a three level tower at the top, totally surrounded by scaffolding. On the way down the narrow stairs to a flat 3 m lower than mine but adjacent, during a full day of moving things, Carcassonne the Castle tumbled over the stair railing and crashed down to the ground hitting scaffolding on the way.

I thought 'how am I going to replace this? It's OOP.' I rushed down the spiral staircase. And there in pieces was the game. I had to climb the scaffolding, then tunnel under it. Then put it all together and crawl out again. And you know... Apart from some dents, it's all right. Remarkably the game lives.

A game I love. You should try it. Yes I know it's not new and wasn't kickstarted, but it is a gem.

At a games weekend someone, who'd already had beer, spilt his glass all over the board. Now here's where age makes a difference, it was made from very thick cardboard with a veneer, and I wiped it (and some pieces) immediately, and you wouldn't know. None of these new light Kickstarter boards for me!

I bought this one shortly after it came out and was riding high the hype wave. Needless to say, I was excited to play it! I had heard so much about how this was an instant classic, and the black borders would get worn from repeated play, that I also ordered some card sleeves. I diligently spent a good chunk of an evening sleeving every one of the cards until it was all ready to play.

Fastforward a few days, I finally get an opportunity to play my fully-sleeved game. Things are going well until I knock over my pint of cider... Never fear, I sleeved these cards! ...wait, what's that? the capillary action has drawn up the cider into the sleeves of all the cards -- the cards are now literally in tiny, individual baths of cider!

I hastily removed all the cards and set them in some paper towels -- miraculously, they dried up and don't even smell of apple. Well, I learned my lesson and didn't re-sleeve RftG. And wouldn't you know, the black borders are just as black as ever... because we never want to play it.

I run a weekly gaming group with my 10-year-old students at work. So it's amazing any game lasts at all by the end of it!

But this story was a stroke of good luck. I had played Marrakech with them after buying it the evening before. A nice game, but better for kids and probably not one I'd pull out any time soon with my adult friends at home. Anyway, as usual, I brought the game home after playing it and put it on my shelf. This was a Thursday.

Flash forward next Wednesday. It just so happened that at my weekly gaming group it was an 'Arabian' game theme night. I listed what I had and a couple members suggested that I'd bring Marrakech. Why not? I thought. So I did, and we played it and UMPH! there was a coin missing. One of the real nice wooden silver printed coins. Gah! Those meddling kids from school musta lost one. So, I now rule that a component check always happens after board game club at school.

Anyway, the next day I go into the room at school where we play, hoping to find the coin. Nowhere! Blast! Hands and knees. Back and forth. There it is! Under the radiator. It lasted a week of janitorial sweepings and vacuums and came back into my possession.

If it wasn't for the Arabian theme night, I don't know when I would have pulled this game out again and that coin would surely have been long gone. Phewf!

My wife has suggested we move our shelf-ed items around again. This is the 3rd-4th times since I've started my collection of games. I was loading them onto our shelf in the basement went it collapsed!

Surprisingly majority of my games were almost unscathed but poor Hacienda took a bracket to front center of the box which now has a nice long thin hole.

Luckily it's thing and nothing falls out but is still sad to see the hole in one of my favorite games.

My copy of Battlelore 1.ed has survived multiple spills of different beverage, with very little to show for it. Ranging from getting the command cards soaked in coffee, twice, (this was before I started sleeving cards), and spilling a glass of red wine (the cat did it) right in the middle of the board while the game was in progress. Still today I cannot make out which of my two boards has suffered damage. Even the occasional food item (such as sausage with mustard) hasn't been able to make a dent in it.

One of my earliest dramatic drinks spillages. We were playing at a convention, and one guy went to get some beers. We set them on the table and got out the game, and one of my friends knocked his beer over and it went all over the board, and one of the player aids. Luckily we hadn't put out all the cardboard pieces, but the board itself was soaked, yet surprisingly, it wiped off cleanly, and you wouldn't even know it had ever happened! The player aid suffered a little more as it warped slightly, but even that has flattened out again over the years, and you'd be hard pushed to work out which one it was nowadays!

I used to sponsor as strategy club one day a week after school at the middle school I taught at. 36 rambunctious, enthusiastic, precocious 6-8 graders looking to dominate the world, figure out who killed Mr. Body or Mr. Lucky, etc...

And yet at the end of the year almost all of my silver Roman Infantry men had their spear points! Just from a "wear and tear" aspect that was amazing!
