There are no mechanics for a capture moves. Let's document each of the different types of capture moves with a different geeklist. This geeklist will be the "master" containing links to the other geeklists.

For each included geeklist please describe the type of capture.

The original intent of this geeklist was for capture types ignoring the various movement types. For instance for the standard game of chess all the pieces capture via a "replacement capture" ignoring how the various pieces themselves move.

However after stumbling on the Piececlopedia it became clear that the types of pieces created in various chess variants was enormous. At this point t isn't clear if "capture" types can really be separated from movement types when there are a number of piece types.

An approach capture is done by moving along a line to an empty space adjacent to an opponent's piece.

This is one of the capture types which Fanorona uses.

The Bashni capture has two parts. The basis for the capture is the short leap. However:

* If a single piece is jumped, then the jumped piece is placed below the piece which did the jumping forming a stack two.

* If a stack is being jumped, only the top piece of the stack is removed and placed below the piece which did the jumping to form a stack of two. The bottom piece of the original stack is thus uncovered and available for play again.

A conversion capture is a special type of capture in which captured pieces are not removed from board, but rather converted from your opponent's pieces to yours. Othello (Reversi) would a good example of this type of capture.

Please describe how the capture works. If there are numerous types of these capture types found, then this geeklist may be split.

As in international draughts, a flying capture is made by moving any distance along an unblocked line, and capturing an opposing man any distance away by jumping to any of the unoccupied squares immediately beyond it.

"Replacement capture" moves would be games like chess where a piece is captured by replacing it with an opposing piece. Chess would be an example of such a game.

These boardgames have capture moves for pieces. But the rules provided in the database don't indicate how the capture works.
