Back in 2011, my daughter and I went to our first Board Game Convention ("Spel" in Belgium), and we promptly got infected with the board game virus.

I've been trying to buy some new board games ever since, but I'm trying to pick those that won't be too difficult for her, while also choosing those that aren't too easy for myself. Add the fact that I have to take Shannon's Autism into account (you can read about that here).

We've both played dozens of board games since, and still have over a dozen games that we have to try out.

I've seen that there are other players here with younger kids, and thought it would be nice to share our views with them, so they can get an inside view on how a game plays with just two players - one adult and one kid. Though we might get some guest appearances...

I hope you enjoy the reviews. Feel free to comment!

A few years ago I showed Shannon a video of the game Forbidden Island. When I asked her if it looked fun, she replied: "Maybe, but it looks too hard to win. There are so many ways to lose!"
Last year we got the opportunity to play that game at a game fair, and she did enjoy it. The fact that we won did help, although it was a close call.

At that same fair we noticed posters of another game called Forbidden Desert. I explained that this was kind of a sequel to Forbidden Island. "Dad, I want that game!" she exclaimed instantly. Now almost half a year later, we tried it out for the first time.

Every month I take my daughters Shannon and Brianna to a local board gaming club (De Bokkensprong in Beveren). This is a family-oriented club: grown-ups can play a board game with their kids, or the adults can play a more complicated game together while the young ones have fun playing an easier game.

Shannon suggested trying out Alhambra. As usual, you can find the review here on BoardGameGeek if you follow this link:

Who hasn’t heard of the legendary sunken city of Atlantis?

Not to be confused with the BBC series with the same name that is trying to portray Greek mythology as inaccurately as possible – Jason, Hercules and Pythagoras go on adventures together, and while Jason has the hots for Ariadne, Hercules falls in love with Medusa…

But I digress.

Take a look at our fourth review here on BoardGameGeek:

Off with her head!

No, you won’t find any odd Alice in Wonderland characters in this card game, because it concerns the French Revolution. Which heads will roll? Isn’t this game a bit too gruesome for a ten-year-old? And did Marie-Antoinette really say "Let them eat cake"? Discover all of this and more in our review of Guillotine.

Ah, the farmer’s life for me.

Shannon: Me too!

The healthy outside air, growing your own vegetables, drinking milk straight from the cow… And don’t forget the stench of manure, getting up early so you can work all day, slaughtering animals that you’ve grown attached to,…

Actually, the farmer’s life isn’t for me.

Shannon: I take it all back.

Give me a virtual farm any day of the week, and that’s what Agricola delivers. Shannon and I have played this game before, but this will be the first time we’re using the expansion “Farmers of the Moor”.

Shannon: With horses!

Me: Right, but be patient, we haven’t even started the review yet.

Not long ago I bought a few games and got some free games sent with them (probably some things they couldn’t get rid of). I think they deserve a try as well, so with low expectations, we started the first free game.

Shannon: And it turned out it was fun!

Me: Right, but please wait until the end of the review before you talk about liking the game.

Together with Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne has got to be the best known “new board game”. It is considered to be a “gateway game”, a game that is used as a starter game to introduce mere mortals who are used to games like Monopoly and Risk, to the wondrous world of the new board game.

Just like Catan, Carcassonne has gotten a bunch of expansions. Carcassonne – The Discovery is a stand-alone version of the original game though; it uses a big chunk of the original rules, but there are still some differences…

A few days ago I looked at our board game collection. It’s not massive, but it’s getting there!

Shannon: it is so massive!

And I’m sure there are some of you in the same position: several games that seemed like a great purchase at the time, but haven’t seen the light of day yet. Another problem is that I only have time to play one long game a week (and a few short ones).
Now that the holiday break has started, my daughter Shannon and I have taken up the challenge to play one game a day for the entire month – every day we’ll play a different game, and afterwards we’ll do a short review on it. Let’s start with a game that I traded with the great and wonderful Rahdo just a few weeks ago: The Witcher Adventure Game…

Shannon: Yay, Rahdo is awesome!

Ever since I played Dominion, I’ve been hooked on deck-building games. You get the freedom of building your own deck, combined with the randomness of which cards will come up. It’s a bit like playing a game of Magic the Gathering, but instead of building your deck ahead of time, you build it on the fly. And with a superhero theme tacked onto this game, how could this not be a great game?

Shannon: Go Batgirl!

Games… The final frontier.
These are the voyages of the family De Witte.
Its 31 day mission:
to explore strange new boxes,
to seek out new games and new game mechanics,
to boldly go where… many have gone before, because – let’s face it – we’re not up with the current games and usually buy them second-hands and by the time they’re being sold second-hand, hundreds of people will have played them while some will have posted reviews, most better and more in-depth than ours but at least we’re trying to bring a new perspective to the reviews, while...

Shannon: Dad!

Woosh, and cue music!

Shannon starts singing "Star Trekkin’".

Me: Not that music!

I told myself I wasn’t going to do it. I mean... it’s Munchkin!

Shannon: YES!!!

I might as well be writing a review on Monopoly! Or Risk! It’s random, consists mainly of screwing over the other players (pardon my French), all the versions are pretty much alike, and… it’s Munchkin, for crying out loud!

Shannon: So?

But the Munchkin saga are among my kids’ favorite games…

Shannon: They ARE my favorite game!

…so I might as well review the version that we just played for the very first time. Let’s saddle up, pardner, and sprout more of those typical spaghetti western clichés…

I’ve always been a roleplayer at heart. 30 years ago I got my first role-playing game, and I was hooked. I’d enjoyed reading fantasy novels, playing fantasy computer games… and now I got to live out an actual adventure! My friends at the time weren’t all that interested though, so as I got older, the role-playing game got shelved.
These days, you have an overabundance of fantasy in games, movies, tv-series, books,… I still run the odd RPG scenario for my family, but I want to create my own adventures and that takes a lot of work. I’m glad there are games like Mice & Mystics that simplify things for me, and I actually get to play along with it! And now we just started playing Pathfinder: Rise of the Runelords. Will it scratch my fantasy itch?

Kickstarter is a great way for new designers to get their great board game idea funded, and a great way for supporters to get those games quicker than the general public, and maybe get some bonuses like exclusives or a reduced price. The first ever game that we backed – actually, it was Shannon who backed it…

Shannon: I’m glad I did!

Me: Don’t ruin the surprise yet!

…was Trickerion, a game about stage magicians competing to be the most famous magician of all…

This will be a two-parter. The first part will be the core game, played with two players. The second part will include the expansions...
