=== Happy 1st Anniversary ===
Welcome to May everybody! Happy International Solitaire Gaming Month! This is the 1st anniversary of solitaire gaming geeklists, a.k.a. Solitaire Games on Your Table. It's been a fun year watching the geeklists and guild grow immensely. It seems now there are many more games to choose from and so much more information. The choices are getting harder instead of easier (and that is a good thing)!

Many people have taken charge to make this a better community for all.

For example, the 1 Player Awards are going on right now. Go make sure and vote.

As you can see, there are a lot of resource and people contribution ideas and energy to this awesome community.

No doubt I'm forgetting some.. please remind me so I can add them here.

=== Geekgold for all! ===
Well, maybe not quite all, but in honor of the 1st anniversary, I'm going to give gold to any other firsts I come across on this list. Actually, I'd been stressing out about what to do for the traditional monthly geekgold givaway here and was inspired by Kevin's excellent post...
HawkeyeLonewolf wrote:
FIRST!

Let everyone see this comment for the entire month of May at the bottom of the Geeklist!

That's right. This is a month of firsts! So I will arbitrarily give a geekgold to any firsts I come across. I'll keep doing this all month while supplies last. First game added? First Post? First play of Friday? First mention of a ukelele?

(answeres: yes, yes, yes, yes)
I will be both biased and arbitrary so post without hesitation.

Finally, I also want to mention. May is not only International Solitaire Gaming Month, but Taco month! Make sure to visit Taco de Mayo - May 2014 and eat some tacos!

I picked this one up at the latest Barnes & Noble sale. I've started out playing with 3 firemen in the basic game and am slowly introducing complexity with each subsequent play.

Just received this in the mail last night (along with two booster gravity packs of Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men). If I can tear myself away from Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men in the next few days I plan on setting up D-Day at Omaha Beach and playing through the intro scenario. It looks like a challenging rulebook to get through, so this game may end up being on my table for a majority of the month

Very, very excited to play this game. Have gone through the tutorial (along with the designer's YouTube tutorial) and plan on starting my first game tonight.

The designer's notes are a really good read, and really set the theme. Now I feel really bad for having skipped designer's notes in the past. blush

Side story:
My wife gave me this as an early birthday present to prove that my statement "You wouldn't buy me a board game for my birthday in 100 years!" was, in fact, incorrect. I should try that tactic more often!

Spent the last day of april reading the rules and did a cardwarden implementation to play DotZ anywere. Just focused on the classic nightmare scenario so far, truly deadly already. Hope to survive until may to play the walking Zeds scenario ....

Edit : May, the FIRST

I like the states of siege(TM) series by VPG. I was not interrested in the theme at all and hesitated a lot before buying my FIRST game related to zombies. I was wrong to wait so long.

Hermann Luttmann did a very good story telling game, extremely tense and far more complex, challenging than the other games of the serie. So far, I never succed but that's only the beginning... DotZ is my FIRST game by Hermann Luttmann. It will not be the last for sure...

What about the FIRST picture of a cardwarden implementation in that forum?

BTW, that was my FIRST game added to the geeklist.

Before Easter I picked up a copy of this (together with the expansion). I've pushed around a few counters to get a feel for the game. I've even started reading 20,000 Leagues under the Seas to get into the theme.

But now, winging its way over from sunny Costa Mesa (the home of Victory Point Games) is a beta copy of the SECOND EDITION of the game for playtesting. I've already begun to read the new rules and cleared a space on my table for when it arrives.

So May will be spent getting my feet wet with the Nautilus.

The original game has been one of Victory Point Games's biggest sellers and from what I've seen so far this is going to be an impressive upgrade. And that's even before the new graphic artist has touched the components.

Check out this VPG news story for more details.

Got this one in the mail today. Will try to get Valeros and Kyra through this one this May

30.05.2014
Well. I didn't get to play this as much as I've hoped. Actually I just got time this week to play it a little. Got my lovely duo through the first scenario yesterday. Planning a bachelorparty for my friend has taken some of my freetime, and the weekends have been busy. I'll get some spare time (vacation time) from work next month and in the start of July, so I'll probably try to do the rest of the scenarios then.

Though my weekends in June will be filled up with summerparties and weddings. And off course Arcon, a gaming convention in Oslo. The FIFA World Cup 2014 is also starting soon and will probably fill up my evenings. But PACG is a great game to play while the match is on, right?

I can't believe I'm the first to add what has become a favorite solo title.

Granted, my weeman is "helping" me play, which largely consists of asking questions and insisting that we play as Goldyk ... but that's pretty sound as advice goes.

It's my first plays of this game since last November, and I'm only now returning to my prior form / scores. It's not so much having forgotten rules etc ... it's having lost the ability to keep the temp up. Oh, and having complete rubbish for units, don't even get me started, I mean is a single monk too much to ask in three games!

What's so great about it?
Avatar
mbmbmbmbmb
I'm going to put this in this month. Because I want to.

I haven't played Warmachine/Hordes in some time, so it's a good thing I have 3 armies. Decided to set up and play a quick game against myself. Circle of Orboros vs Trollbloods: Morvhanna 2 vs Madrak 1 (the numbers represent which version, if you're not familiar with the game). Lists were pretty basic. Morv took Ghetorix (a big bad wolf) a Stalker (another slightly less big bad wolf) and typical Morv stuff (Warpborn Skinwalkers + Alpha and some shooting stuff... and shifting stones). Madrak took a Mauler, Pyre, Full Warders, Full Champs, kithkar and fellcaller, and max stone. I was playing the Steamroller scenario with the 3 flags (1 disappears at the end of the second player's first turn, and you get to fight over the remaining 2).

Terrain: the blast hole thingies are forests, the big white blob is a hill, and the white rectangle is a wall. I probably should have done a better job with terrain, as it didn't really come into play much this game.

Deployment:

Pretty basic, the trollbloods setup first, so Circle decided to setup the Skinwalkers across from the Champs (they can take a punch) and the woldshrimp across from the Warders (this was a dumb decision, as the Warders are really resilient to pow 12 shooting).

Turn 1: Both sides ran up. As per normal. The flag on the left (back of the picture) disappeared. Madrak did his best to fill the Krielstone and the Woldshrimp setup to get some damage off. The warbeasts held back a bit. eMorv cast Fog of War (not really needed, but it gives the stalker stealth) and Carnivore on the Skinwalkers).

Turn 2: Trolls advance some more, and setup to contest 2 flags (scoring starts at the end of circle's turn). The Champions run up a bit and the Warders do as well. Circle goes and starts attacking, the Skinwalkers charge in and do a bit of damage. The woldshrimp get some pot shots off at the Warders and manage to actually remove one from the table as it happened to be outside of the Stone's aura (they only have 8hp each, as do the champions). It's at this point I realize I'm dumb and didn't move anything to contest the remaining flag (closest to the camera). So I pop my Warpwolf stalker into range, knowing he's going to get charged and probably utterly killed, but saving a control point. The troll player was not going to move any closer as they could have just scored. So sacrificing 11 points of my army seems like a bad idea, but I had to do it or basically lose the game. Poor decision on the part of Circle.

Turn 3: Trolls eat the Stalker off the table like it's their job. The Warders charge in and hit like trucks (Madrak popped up Carnage so they get +2 to hit, making it a foregone conclusion the Stalker would be killed). They also clean off the Skinwalker hanging out at the other control point and score 2 points at the end of their turn.

Ghetorix charges in and nomnoms the Warders to death (it was surprisingly easy considering they are arm 21, but he's pow 19... so he does an average of 5 damage per attack, and they have 8 HPs, so he rolled about average). The skinwalkers clear the rest of the champs off and the shifting stones move up to contest, but the Mauler was still in range to contest, Circle takes no points.

Turn 4: Madradk does something dumb and moves up, casts Carnage, and the Mauler Animus on the Mauler, and stands by the middle control point with no fury. They clear some stuff off... then eMorv comes up and gives Madrak the old whatfor. She rolls this:
Boosting + Lifetrader is amazing. Even at Dice - 6 she does 16 points of damage. And is sitting on 5 more Fury... and Madrak is knocked down (already used his once per game thingy). He is felled.

Victory to the Unpainted Lady Goat! (she rides a goat, if you cant' tell from the picture).

I just thought I would play a couple of scenarios (starting with Falkirk) but ended up just finishing Crecy which I am tempted to play again before moving on to Poitiers. When I finish a game most of the time I can't decide what to play next that is the good thing about playing Men of Iron I won't have to worry till I get to Najera. However, I have Infidel if I don't get burned out with the series.

I played this wonderful game again this evening. I thought I was doing really well as I came to the end of the first civil war, only to be hammered on the political tracks, and end up with +2 Victory Points. Will do the second and third wars tomorrow evening.

I really recommend this game from VPG. Very well produced with a beautiful map and lovely components. The historical theme is very well done, and if you have more than a passing interest in the wars it will grab you.

Next up is some Lord of the Rings LCG Hobbit saga.

Played a 9 hole matchplay game of this little thing. I lost.cry

No strategy at all, just rolling dice and looking at the score, but fun and tense as dice rolls can be.

session report below

ad79 wrote:
At the tee we have Ron versus Stig.
Ron won the cointoss and tees off first.
Matchplay over 9 holes.

Hole 1:
Ron: 250 yards, 2nd short, 3rd Bunker 4 Green, 1 putt; 5 strokes
Stig: Drive to green, 2 putts; 3 strokes

1up for Stig after a huge drive to the green.

Hole 2:
Stig: 300 yards, 2nd water 1 penalty 4 green,2 putts; 6 strokes
Ron: Drive to green, 1 putt; 2 strokes

Ron ties it up again with a drive to match Stig's on hole 1.

Hole 3:
Ron: 180 yards, 2nd hooked, 3rd on green, 2 putts; 5 strokes
Stig: Drive to green, 1 putt; 2 strokes

Another huge drive decides takes stig back to 1 up. What will happen when they both hit the sweetspots?

Hole 4:
Stig: Drive to green, 2 putts; 3 strokes
Ron: 180 yards, 2nd topped, 3rd bunker 4 Green, 2 putts; 6 strokes

And another driven green makes it 2 up for Stig and we are almost at the halfway point.

Hole 5:
Stig: 250 yards, 2nd on green, 2putts; 4 strokes
Ron: Slice out of bounds 3 bunker 4 green,2 putts; 6 strokes

Ron's slice really made it difficult for him and he falls to 3 down with 4 holes left. Can this be over soon? Ron needs to step up his game now.

Hole 6:
Stig: 250 yards, 2nd water 1 penalty 4 green, 1 putt; 5 strokes
Ron: Drive to green, 1 putt; 2 strokes

Ron finds something and plays this hole perfect to claw his way back to 2 down, but still far from safe. If Stig wins 1 of the last 3 holesx he takes the win.

Hole 7:
Ron: 250 yards,2nd short, 3rd on green,2 putts: 5 strokes
Stig: 250 yards,2nd water 1 penalty 4 green, 3putts 7 strokes

Ron stays calm and gets the job done or maybe Stig just failed to do his job on this hole. 7 strokes is the highest score so far today. Stigs lead down to 1up now

Hole 8:
Ron: Drive to green, 2 putts; 3 strokes
Stig: 180 yards, 2nd topped, 3rd on green, 2 putts; 5 strokes

Ron has tied it up with brilliant play on the home stretch and we stand at the 9th tee and it's anyones game. Can Ron hold it together or can Stig stop the leak and climb back in the saddle. This will be tense.

Hole 9:
Will be replayed stroke by stroke.
Ron: 180 yards (Not the best of shots on the 9th tee. Can Stig take advantage?)
Stig: Drive topped (That was nerves and just plain ugly)

As Stig is farthest away he first now.

Stig: 2nd topped (Again? Stig was 3 up with 4 holes left and now he is struggling to hit the ball and is just yards past Ron after 2 strokes)
Ron: 2nd in bunker(And Ron with just an easy shot towards the green fades it into the right bunker)

Can thes guys get it onto the green with their 3rd shot? Stig in the fairway with a long shot and Ron in the bunker with a short one. Stig is up first.

Stig: 3rd on green (well placed shot, but not an easy putt for Stig)
Ron: 3rd on green (Ron matches Stigs shot)

This is now a putting contest and the one that can sink this in one will likely win.

Stig: 2 putts (Just right of the hole, but close enough for an easy holeout and he is home in 5 strokes, and Ron has a chance to hole out for the win)

Ron: (Ron gives it a firm stroke as he won't leave it short at least. It rolls towards the hole and follows the slope. This will be on the edge and might just go in. The ball hangs on the lip for a second before it drops in for the win and Ron erupts with joy) 4 strokes

Ron wins 1up after a sensational comeback from 3down with 4 holes left. Stigs performance on the homestretch can not be called anything but a collapse.

Closing thoughts: Ron kindly sent me this game and this match was played solo. This is not much of a game as there is NOTHING at all you can do to impact the result. You roll the dice and that is all. There is no strategy at all. Nill. Nada. Nothing.

BUT

It is a heck of a tense ride when played as matchplay with dice rolled like on the 9th hole. Having Ron come back from 3down had me shouting for my rolls and cursing the bad shots. Also played a 5 hole match versus my dauhgter and after she went 2up after 2 I clawed my way back on the next 2 holes and the 5th hole was halved. Another 3 halved holes before my daughter 1putted for the win on the 9th hole. We had great fun, but this is no game.

I'm absolutely obsessed with this game at the moment, the variability is seemingly endless, especially with the three expansions, this web-based randomizer, and the not-so-weekly challenge thread

I've played a few not so successful 2-player games and beginning to enjoy it more solo...

I just picked this one up a few weeks ago and have really been enjoying it. Every time, I feel like I'm totally going to beat it, only to be foiled in the end - usually within just a card or two of the end. Which makes me feel a lot like this:

But I'm getting better and hope to record a victory soon. :-)

I just got this one. I'm intrigued by the subject and it appears to be well executed. I hope to be able to post a review.

for putting it on my radar.

I don't have any idea what the strategy is if any exists at all, but it's amusing and looks classy sitting on the shelf.

First Time Poster to SGOYT.

I need to thank Judy for directing me here. I had listed solo play of Statis Pro Football as my best new-to-me game of 2013 and she let me know about this list. I have started a full replay of the 1989 NFL season. After 6-months of obsessive play, I finally put together some results and stats to share.

And obsessive play continues. Pretty much always set-up the next game after finishing one and working up the stats. Well in to Week 5 now with the following results:

Week 5, Game 1: Chicago 5 at TAMPA BAY 34. The Bears (1-3-1) offensive woes continue (a mere 3 FGs over last two weeks) and the Buccaneers (3-2) used 3 second quarter turnovers to build a 31-0 halftime lead for an easy win.

Week 5, Game 2: Detroit 10 at MINNESOTA 38. In what was billed by CBS as the NFC Game of the Week, the Vikings (5-0) ended the drama early by taking a 21-0 lead into the second quarter after converting on 3 Lions (3-2) turnovers.

Week 5, Game 3: Dallas 28 at GREEN BAY 31: The Packers (3-2) amassed 489 yards total offense but had to survive a fourth quarter comeback to beat the Cowboys (0-5). Troy Aikman connected with Michael Irvin on a 65-yard TD pass but the Packers recovered the on-sides kick with 1 minute remaining.

Week 5, Game 4: Phoenix 10 at WASHINGTON 27. Washington (5-0) coasted to an easy win over the winless Cardinals (0-5).

Week 5, Game 5: New York Giants 3 at PHILADELPHIA 34. The Eagles (3-1-1) shut down the Giants (3-2) offense, limiting them to 118 yards total and a mere 1 yard rushing. The Giants will desparately seek the return of injured #1 running back Ottis Anderson in Week 6.

Currently on the table I have Atlanta (2-2) at Los Angeles Rams (4-0). I will post the results as future games are completed.

Just finished my second game of this, playing Firefight 1 with the updated rules. The Germans trampled the Soviets with multiple kills and a last-minute takeover of the target hex. I've got the most basic rules sorted as far as they go for this firefight (no vehicles or arty yet), and the question of whether I can have fun playing both sides of a wargame has been answered with a resounding YES!!!

Dead tired now, and not looking forward to work tomorrow. But hey, happy May Day to all of us! Workers Unite!

(Edit to add, because I just saw Albert's additions: this is my FIRST hex-and-counter wargame!

So, tonight was my first play with the Printer Studio cards. I played two games. Although the first game was really more of a playtest. In which I realized that the Director Heal cards are completely impossible to beat as listed.

So I tried an amended rule to the heal cards.

At the beginning of the game, the player decides the function of the heal icon. The Heal Icon either completely heals the character as listed or the Heal Icon adds a single HP die worth 6 HP.

The game before this rule was completely impossible.

The second game didn't seem quite so lopsided. I started the game with Sonic, Optimus Prime, Strider, Watson, and Le Chuck (one of the hardest characters in the game to use). My sub was Sam and Max. This was a team that tried to effectively use Le Chucks first ability: do some damage, predict the first card, and then do more damage and keep the card if you are right. Not as impossible if you stack the deck with mostly one suit. (In my case hearts). I had a couple converter cards to make up for the fact that my deck consisted of 15 hearts (out of 20 cards).

I played medium difficulty, so I had to defeat 7 characters. Of course, the Director puts into play some of the hardest to destroy characters due to either immunities or high HP. He starts with The Witch King, Warp Core, Alien Queen, Alice, and Arthus Menithil. The director plays with a Heal/Boost deck.

Really difficult game. Had a blast though. First turn causes the Warp Core to create a count down to do 10 damage to all characters on the board. It takes 4 turns for this ability to trigger. I still can't stop it and it manages to do a lot of damage to everyone, but my characters are much lower in HP than the Directors.

But I do catch a break in that the Warp Core destroys itself, and then is replaced by Glados the next turn. Of course Glados attacks and flips all the HP dice on the board. Of course, it does this when I am low HP and the Director is much higher. Playing field is leveled and I manage to take out a bunch of characters with A LOT of boost tokens.

At the end of the day, it isn't enough to take the director down.

Final Score: Me 17, The Director: 21

Will finish off my Medium length Libya 1984 campaign this weekend.

The game is fun but I think I might need to make this game harder through variant rules. The situational awareness rules seem to make it so most enemies are blown away within the first round. Though I guess planning that round of obliteration is half the point.

Or maybe a long campaign has more chance to go wrong?

(My previous play using Marines seemed a lot more difficult too)

First time poster on this geeklist, but i wanted to give this wonderful solo game some extra exposure.

This is a clever little game (only 72 cards) with some hand management, some deck building (or trimming). You start with only 1 sheep and the goal is to expand your flock to more than 1000 sheep. To do that you have to go through your event deck 3 times - some events are good, and some are bad.

This game isn't widely available and in japanese/english, but I made my own print and play copy. It hasn't got the whimsy artwork but it'll do :-)
