I've played many boardgames, but haven't really played any wargames. I'm not talking about the AGoT, Axis and Allies, Attack, or Diplomacy type wargames. I'm not even talking about the Columbia Block games (which I own and like) I'm talking about the hex and counter style games, The true wargamers standard type game.

I would like a few suggestions for a few simple games to start playing. Games I can take what I have learned and build upon that base into more and more complex and hopefully fufilling games.

I picked this up for $6.00. My thinking was as follows: 1. It's simple, so it shouldn't blow my mind in terms of complexity 2. It's small, so it won't take days to play. 3. Some of the mechanics will be like other AH hex and chit wargames. Therefore I think I learned a couple of the basics that should apply going forward. (Like movements, ZOC, Terrain effects, combat resolution, etc...)

I enjoyed the game, but the whole time I was thinking the world of wargames is much better than this.

Where should I go from here?

Ps. I actually own quite a few wargames, but remember I am newby in terms of actually playing them.

Pss. Please don't suggest spending $500 to get started on ASL.

Bltzkreig is a good game to learn many of the basic mechanics that a lot of wargames use. Such as combat factors, movement factors, odds ratios, zones of control, and terrain effects. It has a rather simple set of air rules with counters for tactical, medium, strategic bombers and fighters. Also rules for amphibious invasions are included.

I believe Drive on Paris or any other game in The Gamer's Standard Combat Series would fit the criteria of what you are looking for in a wargame.

An excellent game, featuring rules much like those in "Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit", one of my favorite games. Modular board. Yay!

Here's a game that's in print and a lot of fun. It comes with several scenarios and has a rulebook that's not too hard to handle. The rulebook features "programmed instruction" so you work your way through small parts of the rulebook and then play scenarios after mastering a certain section of the rules.

It's a tactical level game, has hexes and some innovative ideas, and is fun to play and easy (by wargame standards) to learn.

The game also has a strong following on Consimworld with plenty of support if you have rules questions.

Here is another tactical entry that has a incremental learning curve. Despite what many think, the first couple scenarios are really quite straightforward and easy to manage. Then each scenario adds a few new rules and before you know it, you're a wargamer!

This game would be a good start, low counter density and fairly short rules.

I started playing wargames many years ago on this one. Simple, nice graphic for the time, nice theme, a lot of fun if you play the Campaign. Sell for a few $ on Ebay (get the SPI edition in the image...)

This one is great for me if you don't play solitaire! Simple rules but they consider attrition, leaders' ability, fog of war, etc. It seems OSG is going to print a new edition with large esa. Sells well on Ebay for a few $.

Nobody has mentioned this one I noticed but it does allow you to play the campaign using VARIABLE forces for each side and in effect, see what could have happened had the French been MORE Mobile oriented or didn't HAVE the Maginot Line and such.

Originally by SPI and redone by Decision Games, GET the SPI version if possible. Command did a game similiar to this called SMITHEREENS but it's a HUGE game in comparison to include VAST amounts of game units, THEIR game mechanics and 2 BIG maps. The uniqueness of the original SPI game was that ONE player controlled BOTH the Soviet/Western German forces and the other had the Allied/Eastern German forces. Thusly, you were put into the position of Defending with one and Attacking with the other. This must have been an appreciated topic since it's been re-cycled a couple of times NOW.

If you'd like to partake of a single particular battle in the 'Vietnam War', then I'd suggest this one. It is the 'Battle of Khe Sanh', and even includes the assault, or more properly, the over-run of the 'Special Forces' camp nearby as a prelude to the main Assault. It has innovative approaches for a conflict on this scale, including 'off-board' Artillery Support, various Helicoptor Transport, plus much more. The photo is of the later 'boxed' edition, and it was initially released in 'Zip-loc' form-I've got both.

Of course, this is the 'O'riginal "Metagaming" box cover and Avalon Hill went on to greatly improve upon this. As usual, I've got them both, since I had started playing the "MG" version way before A-H got their 'hands' on it.
