I love the Cthulhu mythos, but until recently I hadn't read any of it. So I decided to do something about that, and am now partway through a collection of Lovecraft's stories, titled 'Call of Cthulhu and other weird stories'.
I've yet to get to the titular story, though. So far, I'm at 'The Rats in the Walls' (I think that was the name).

Another one I've begun, but not finished yet, is Richard Dawkins' 'The Selfish Gene'. I'm not a biologist or anything, but evolution is a great concept and I want to know more.
It's going slowly, though. I can't help thinking that the Internet, with its tendency to drag me away from books, is ruining my attention span and probably my English as well.

And I'd also like to mention Dan Brown's 'Inferno' as the last book I read. That was back in March. Terrible. (not the book, just the fact that it's been that long; I enjoyed the book just fine)

Ash: A Secret History by Mary Gentle.

This book was published in 4 installments in the US. And with good reason as it is something like 1200 pages. My Kindle edition has them all together in a single volume, as the author continued. I am about 40% of the way in and it's been a pretty wild ride.

Ash hits on all my hotspots: alternate history, bizarre speculative fiction, a strong female lead and a deep rich meaty story without following any of the typical fantasy tropes. A winner so far!

I'm reading Mr. Tompkins in Paperback by George Gamow.

It's about a man named Mr. Tompkins who falls asleep during a physics lecture. When he wakes up, he finds himself in a city where the speed of light is super-slow -- around 30 miles per hour.

As a result, moving around and riding around in bicycles now have observable relativistic effects, whereas in the world he's used to (that is, the reader's world), the speed of light is so fast that relativistic effects are negligible to us, and therefore we aren't even aware that they're there.

The book is educational fiction in that it attempts to show the user what happens when things approach light-speed. Because we travel so slowly compared to light, it's not intuitive to us at all. This book is trying to help us understand the non-intuitive parts of physics.

I'll be honest: this book, while fun at times, isn't exactly easy reading -- partly because it was written back in the 1940s, and partly because the subject matter isn't that easy to understand. (And by their very nature, un-intuitive things tend not to be easy to understand.)

Restoring the Lost Constitution, the Presumption of Liberty by Randy E. Barnett

I just finished reading this 400-page book. It's a rather heavy read as the author -- a distinguished law professor at Georgetown University -- explains the Constitutional construction method known as original meaning, and why the abandonment of it over the past 100 years by the US Supreme Court has led to what essentially amounts to redacting of the US Constitution, particularly the Ninth Amendment, and the increase in power and reach of the federal government. It explains how the Founding Fathers' Presumption of Liberty has been replaced by a Presumption of Constitutionality by both liberal and conservative justices since the Progressive Era.

As one who leans toward libertarianism, I found it the most important book I have read in several years, even though Prof. Barnett states that his thesis is not deliberately libertarian at its core.

I'm also making my way through this pair of books by Martin Gardner:

Aha! Insight
and
Aha! Gotcha: Paradoxes to Puzzle and Delight

The books are all about seeing problems in new ways, including seeing logical paradoxes.

Obviously, the Aha! Gotcha: Paradoxes to Puzzle and Delight book deals mainly with paradoxes. If you're fascinated with paradoxes you'll find lots to like in this book, but be aware that if you're familiar with examples of paradoxes already, much of the material will be old to you.

The Aha! Insight book is interesting in that it presents logical problems that are very difficult to solve with a brute-force approach (the kind that might take a computer hours or even centuries to solve). After inviting you to ponder a problem for a while, the author gives hints on how to solve the problem using a logical short-cut, eventually revealing an efficient solution. This is done to provoke an Aha! moment in the reader, which is something that computers can't come up with on their own (a claim by the author I tend to agree with).

After this Aha! moment, the author poses similar problems that can be solved with the same leap of logic, so that conundrums that seemed monstrous before now appear quite tame and solvable.

Three books in the last two weeks. A bit of a record for me - helped by the quality (or readability) of all three.

Sand by Hugh Howey. Howey cements himself as the master of post-apocalyptic fiction. Sort of J.G.Ballard meets Dan Brown.

The Circle by Dave Eggers. Facebook/Google/twitter get the Brave New World treatment. A bit obvious at times but an entertaining read

The Orphan Masters Son by Adam Johnson. A latter day 1984 as everyman Pak Jun Do lives through the horrors and insanities of DPRK. A book about humanity in the face of inhumanity. Selflessness and sacrifice in the face of an oppressive regime. Brilliant. Read it.

Lately, I have become more and more interested in theoretical physics, even though I am no expert, I am buffled by what physicists like Einstein, Hawking and Michio Kaku (to name a few) have thought about and have theorized.

Therefore, after reading a lot of Einstein's work, I decided to up the ante, and heard of Steven Hawking's book A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME, that he wrote in 1988, specifically for non physicists to explain in plain simple language, difficult principles.

The book is amazing, and the things there pictured are more sic-fi than actually science… funny, though, that it looks like what we call "science fiction" is more close to being "science", than we think.

String theory; the M theory; Quantum mechanics…

If you're interested, on a less scientific side, I am also reading "SCIENCE OF THE IMPOSSIBLE", by Michio Kaku.

"Shatter Me", by Tahereh Mafi.

Young adult, dystopian future story. Read about it in mental_floss, and I was curious about the writing style. The story is told first person, and the narrator often crosses out words or abandons rules of grammar.

For what it's worth...

I used to read back before I had two kids (3 1/2 yrs and 7 weeks). In theory I still do. I began "The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkerson before #2 was born. I haven't been very diligent about picking it up and that's no reflection on this account of America's largest, longest and most overlooked migration, that of African-Americans from the rural South to the urban North of the U.S. As interested as I am in the subject, I find I spend my reading time here on BGG or reading more practical stuff, like books on parenting skills to help me keep my wits with my 3 yr old (we are in the "NO!" stage. zombie). However, one day I might have enough leisure time to play games, read rule books, and REAL books once again (I ranked them in order of importance ).

Funny tidbit: I actually purchased the digital version of the same book back when #1 was a newborn and I never got far with it then either. Years pass and I see the hard copy at B&N and thought it sounded interesting, so I got it again. Something kept nagging at me. It seemed familiar. I dug out my old dusty e-reader (never took to this) and there it was. Thought it was kinda weird to be reading the same book unknowingly each time I was dealing with a newborn.

As it says on the cover " A boisterous account of Lumberjacks, lynchings, barroom brawls, madams, & timber thieves".

Some of my Dads uncles were working the woods in the early 1900's and while not in the real heyday of the industry they still had some stories that were passed down to my father and than to me. Very hard men working in a very hard world.

Just started... Heretics, by G.K. Chesterton

Just finished... The Everlasting Man, by G.K. Chesterton. (This one actually took me several tries to finish. The epic amount of history he knows--and expects the reader to know--made this a difficult challenge for me... but a good one.) The apologetic arguments in this book are quite unique, though I at first found them opaque until his line of reasoning sort of "broke through" to me. I'm glad I didn't shelve this one permanently.
