Hi, my name is Keith McKimmy III (or KM3 for short). Please feel free to check out my bgg profile to get to know a little more about my interests and how I got into board gaming.

I have always had the desire to do text reviews of board games I own, and now I've followed through with that desire. My hope was to not just review a game and give my opinions on whether or not it is good or bad, but also to give my opinions, as an owner, on whether or not the game was worth my hard-earned money.

Since I have done as many reviews as possible of games I own/play on a regular basis, I now have nothing to review. I will continue reviewing games*, prioritizing ones I purchase myself, but I will no longer limit my review criteria to games I personally own. This will make choosing games to review easier on me, and not force me to table certain games just to meet the magical #5, in terms of games played. Don't be alarmed, the reviews will still feature an emphasis on potential ownership. For games that I don't own, I will simply add in additional information on whether or not I plan on buying the game, and at what price I'd feel comfortable paying. The rest of the format will remain the same.

*Given my own inability to review and post on a specific day, I am now planning on reviewing one game a week. Newer reviews will be listed first, with older reviews being listed last. Sorry for anyone looking forward to new game reviews. I've been busy since starting work again/getting settled with moving back to the home state. Reviews are on hold for the time being. I will update this list to reflect the upcoming game to be reviewed, as well as the date you should see it posted by.

Guidelines

I will play each reviewed game a minimum of 5 times. Depending on game length this will give me anywhere from 50 minutes (an Escape style game) to 15 hours (an Ora et Labora style game) with the game. I feel that 5 plays is a good baseline number for which to evaluate a game on. I reserve the right to modify any review based on more plays of the game, if my thoughts change. (Player counts and strategies used will be noted.)

I don’t actively seek to play just any game. For the most part, I will be playing games that I am naturally drawn towards (which is the reason I purchased them in the first place). This will possibly skew ratings to be higher than they otherwise would be. I'm pretty frugal, but I have purchased a few games I didn't care too much for.

I will take a weighted average of play (60%), parts (10%), and practicality (30%) on a 1 to 5 scale. These totals will then be doubled to give a rating out of 10. My hope is that breaking the games down into different categories will help give the gamer a better overall picture, in terms of whether or not a game is worth owning. The rubric for the 1 to 5 scale is shown below. The game must check off at least 2 of the 3 items, in order to meet the criteria for a certain rating. Any deviations or exceptions will be noted.

Play (60%)

1 - Paths to victory are clearly not balanced. The game is no longer fun because of the imbalance. There are complete disconnects between thematic and mechanical elements, and they take away from the experience. The player only continues playing the game to fulfill his obligation to other players. Theme and mechanics both fail to stir up any positive feelings in the player.

2 - Not all paths to victory are balanced. One path is clearly not competitive, while others are only marginally competitive. Imbalance takes away from the game’s fun, but it is still somewhat enjoyable. There are complete disconnects between thematic and mechanical elements, and they take away from the experience. The player has a hard time staying focused in the game, whether theme/mechanic related.

3 - Not all paths to victory are balanced. One path is clearly not competitive, while all others are still balanced and competitive. The game is still fun though despite this. There are more than a couple of disconnects between thematic and mechanical elements. Player’s experience is somewhat lessened because of disconnects. The player has a hard time staying focused in the game, whether theme/mechanic related.

4 - Game is completely balanced and fun. Minor disconnects between thematic and mechanical elements. Not everything done in the game can be logically reasoned out, in terms of mechanics/theme. Player still enjoys the game despite disconnects. Player’s attention is held for the duration of the game, whether theme/mechanic related.

5 - Game is completely balanced and fun. No disconnects exist between thematic and mechanical elements. Everything done in the game can be logically reasoned out, in terms of mechanics/theme. The player is absolutely enthralled by the game. Player can’t stop thinking about the theme/mechanics.

Parts (10%)

1 - Components are cheap, and not durable. Won’t stand multiple plays. Components take away from the game thematically/mechanically. Box barely fits all game components.

2 - Components are very cheap, but still stand multiple plays. Components take away from the game thematically/mechanically. Box is suitable for storing game components.

3 - Components are average. Apparent that they’re not worth the price shown on the box. Components don’t take away from the game thematically/mechanically. Box is suitable for storing game components.

4 - Components are heavy, durable, and appear to be worth the price shown on the box. Components don’t take away from the game thematically/mechanically. Box is suitable for storing game components. Box comes with additional storage and/or a worthwhile insert.

5 - Components are heavy, durable, and worth the price shown on the box. Components add to the game thematically/mechanically. Box is large enough for storing game components, and a possible expansion. Box comes with additional storage and/or a worthwhile insert.

Practicality (30%)

1 - Too difficult to table to warrant purchasing. Game only plays well at a certain player count. All players need to learn the game before playing. Inaccessible to all gamers. The game will never be worth the amount of time spent playing it.

2 - Won’t play the game enough to warrant purchasing. Game only plays well at a certain player count. All players need to learn the game before playing. Inaccessible to an average gamer. The game is not worth the amount of time spent playing it.

3 - May not play the game enough to warrant purchasing. Game plays well at only a couple of player counts. All players should attempt to learn before playing. Bordering inaccessible. The game is not worth the amount of time spent playing it.

4 - Will receive enough playtime that cost isn't an issue in purchase decision. Game plays well at all player counts. Game requires a bit of teaching. Still accessible. The game is worth the amount of time spent playing it.

5 - Worthy of enough plays that cost isn't an issue in purchase decision. Game plays well at all player counts. Game is easily taught within minutes. Very accessible. The game is absolutely worth the amount of time spent playing it.
