These "familes" are listed in the BGG database, but are really about the mechanics of gameplay. The referenced game in the family name is really an "Archetype" game which defines the overall character of the play.

The games may be from more than one publisher, more than one designer, and may have more than one theme.

I've cut and pasted the "Family Description" into each...

A fishing game is a kind of traditional card game where the object is to capture cards from a central layout by playing cards from your hand that match the displayed cards in some way; typically by matching values directly or by taking cards whose sum match the card played. Capturing all of the cards in the display in a single turn is often rewarded especially well in these types of games.

Each player has a hand of cards and in the centre of the table is a stock of face-down cards and a face-up discard pile. At the start of your turn you draw an (unknown) card from the stock or a (known) card from the discard pile (in some games you may be able to draw more than one card). You end your turn by discarding a card face up on top of the discard pile. In this way you try to improve your hand towards some objective.

Each player has a hand of cards and a move consists of exchanging a card or cards. The exchange may be with another player or with a stock of face-up or face-down cards on the table. The objective is generally to collect certain cards or combinations of cards.

Card exchange games are subdivided in different subfamilies:
Draw and Discard Games
The basic move is to draw a card from the stock and discard one to the discard pile. This category includes the large group of Rummy Games.
Commerce group
There is a common pool of cards on the table, and at your turn you exchange one or more cards with the pool.
Cuckoo group
Each player has only one card, and at their turn can try to exchange this for their neighbour's card.
Quartet group
At your turn you can ask another player for a card that you want, and if they have it they must give it to you.

Card passing games
A move consists of passing a card or cards to your neighbour, or in some cases taking a card from your neighbour.

This is by far the largest main category of card Games. Each player has a hand of cards and a move consists of playing out one or more cards to the table to achieve some effect. The play ends when some or all of the players have run out of cards to play.

Subdivisions of that family are:

Trick Taking Games
A trick consists of each player in turn playing one card face up to the table. There are Plain Trick Games in which only the tricks themselves are important, and Point Trick Games in which the value of tricks is affected by which cards they contain. Inflation games are similar to trick-taking games, but players may acquire extra cards during the game, making the hand sizes unequal.

Beating Games
At your turn you must either beat the card played by the previous player or pick it up (possibly with other cards) and add it to your hand. The aim is generally to get rid of all your cards.

Climbing Games
In these games if you cannot or do not wish to beat the previous play you simply pass.

Adding Games
The cards are played in a pile and their values added, the aim usually being to achieve or avoid particular totals.

Fishing Games
There is a pool of face-up cards on the table which can be captured by playing a matching card from your hand.

Matching Games
At your turn you must play a card which matches the previous play or fits into a layout according to some rule. Most often the aim is to get rid of all your cards in this way. This category includes the stops group, the eights group and the layout group.

War Group
Players store their cards in a pile face down and turn up the top card to play it. In certain circumstances the played cards are captured by one player, and added to their store of cards.

A category of games that have branched off and evolved from the early non-standardized finger flicking games of the Carrom variety. Common traits are square boards with holes in each corner and differently coloured discs that must be knocked into the holes by hitting them with special striker discs. Some versions have been influenced by billiards to use cues for propelling the striker discs, and there are also variations in board size, size and placement of holes, type and number of discs, and procedural aspects.

Boards are small enough to be portable, and are supported on a table rather than being a stand-alone gaming table, unlike a billiards table.

A climbing game is a card game (although sometimes the tiles are Mahjong-like tiles), in which each player must play a set of cards to beat the set of cards played by the previous player. All cards are played into the middle of the table. If everyone passes, the cards are cleared (in some games being awarded to whoever played last; in others, lined up so everyone can see which cards are no longer a threat) and a new round is started (generally by the winner of the previous round). In many climbing games the high card is the Two rather than the Ace or the highest number.

A connection game is a type of abstract strategy game in which players attempt to complete a specific type of connection with their pieces. This could involve forming a path between two or more goals, completing a closed loop, or connecting all of one's pieces so they are adjacent to each other. Connection games typically have simple rules, but complex strategies. They have minimal components and may be played as board games, computer games, or even paper and pencil games.

Like most popular traditional playing card games, Cribbage has spawned many variants. Typical changes include enhancements to the board, special power cards, or blending with rules from another traditional card game. The idea of playing out hands two-dimensionally appears to be an idea independently developed by multiple authors.
