2014 will be the 14th year of my little gaming weekend (you can read about DC12 here), and I feel like we're finally hitting our stride. Our core group (me, Rich, Glenn, Tony, Stu and sometimes Wade and/or Stasey) has great energy and friendship and has been meeting annually for many, many years. And for the past couple years, I've been having a large handful of my local gamers show up for the weekend too, with different people coming and going as their lives/jobs permit.

One of the best parts of DC has been its slow expansion into a five, nearly six-day event. I am always envious of Alan Moone's Gathering of Friends con, which goes for a week, and wanted to stretch DC to a week if I can. Well, it's only going to happen slowly, drip by drip, and we are getting there. These days, Stu usually shows up on Tuesday night for some early gaming and drinking, then to help me shop first thing Wednesday, so we have everything we need when people begin flying in Wednesday. And then we game right through to Sunday. Considering we used to start Thursday night, I'm happy for the extra two days. Soon Stu will be heading over Monday and it can truly be called a game week.

But with an inconsistently-sized group (people come and go all week), there have been two main challenges - the games and the food. Well, the games are only difficult when we hit the 7-8 players range, just because it's a little harder to split up then. Once you get to 9 players, getting two good games going is easy.

With food, this year I went for quantity over quality. When my chef (Wade) called in sick with just a couple days notice, I just decided to make meals that would fill people and were easy to make. This worked great, except for when Rich added too much chili powder and ruined what was shaping up to be a great pork chili. Ah, this is how things go sometime.

So I present you with the list for DC13, which was the best organized and most attended DC of all time. That's pretty cool.

Stu arrived Tuesday night and we laughed a lot. Starting DC on Tuesday night is becoming a tradition and it's always great when we can sit down for our first game.

We spun up London again, which I know is one of Wade's favorite games. Then Stu got ahead and I couldn't catch up. This is a really great game that I want to play more of, but strangely don't.

I look forward to another game of London on Tuesday this year, hopefully with Wade as well.

Tuesday: Stu!

This is our ceremonial opening game. This year, Stu and I drove up to SFO to pick up both Tony and Glenn, who were able to both arrive within 15m of each other. How great is that?

By 2pm or so, Rich had also arrived (with his homebrew in tow) and we kicked off the "weekend" of gaming. We don't play this game very often (we used to play it a lot) but it's always nice to play once a year with the same crew. It has special meaning to us now.

Wednesday: Rich “I won with booze and a girlfriend”

We love Lords of Waterdeep - it's an all-time DC fave, and so with five of us (the expansion had not been released yet), we sat down for our second game of the weekend.

Then next day I would dominate as the builder, showing how one uses the buildings to not only generate tons of income, but then gain all the extra VP at the end.

A classic DC game. I'm sure we'll play again. (I know we'll play again this year - Stasey is finally attending again, and he hasn't played. For me it's one of the best games of the decade.)

Wednesday: Glenn “16 pt spread – total watertight!”
Thursday: Dave dominates as builder AGAIN

I'm going to skip forward a bit to talk about Eclipse. At DC12, we tried to play Space Empires, but it just didn't work. Then we discovered Eclipse and knew that we had discovered something special. It's got all the great aspects of a 4x game, it's easy to teach, hard to master, and just overall a fantastic gaming experience. I was very eager to teach my DC crew how great it is.

However, one of the ongoing lessons of DC is "thou shall not start a monster game after 6pm, nor on the first day of DC." I think it was nearly 8pm (on the first day) once we got everyone settled and actually playing Eclipse, and by that point it's really just everyone's fault that it all falls apart. Like the Shogun game from DC12, trying to get something crunchy on the table on the first day is just going to be too difficult to be worth it. We called the game around midnight when it was obvious that we wouldn't even come close to finishing it.

However, we would then try again first thing on Friday when we were much more sober and aware, and it went over very, very well. It then comes as no surprise that Glenn, who is quite good at conquering his foes, dominated the full game. I hate him so.

Wednesday: called at turn 6, won by a beaten and rescinded Stu “The spread is insurmountable!”
Friday: Glenn

As I stated above, finding a game that works well with 7-10 people is difficult. That is, until we discovered Resistance. You'll know that from previous DCs, this has been a favorite of ours for quite a while. It may very well be my favorite game of all time.

Of course, it helped that I had a schooling at the game at Dundracon 2013, where I came to much better understand how to read people. Suddenly I was on the winning side about half the time, which greatly increased my enjoyment of the game. And with 7-10 people at the weekend pretty much all the time, we played this game every day. It's fast, fun and has plenty of betrayal. Lots and lots of goodness here.

In the end we even played with the extra couple cards, which makes it even more challenging. Man I Love this game.

This will see some table time at DC14 for sure...

I used to hate Citadels, mostly because I could never win. I always seemed to pick the role everyone knew I was picking, and so the Thief or Assassin would pick away at me until there was nothing left. A couple rounds being assassinated and there's no way you're going to win.

But recently I figured out how to NOT pick the most obvious role, which makes the game much more tolerable. Some of the mechanics are a bit dated by now, but when it comes to a relatively quick game for 6-7 people, it has a good place in my game collection.

We started Friday morning with a game of Citadels to cleanse the pallet. Tony wiped the board with us and we moved on our full game of Eclipse.

Once Eclipse was done, we had some more people show up and we split into two groups.

Our group busted out Elder Sign, which is easier to setup and play than Arkham Horror and can take more people than Mansions of Madness. I still think Elder Sign is basically Cthulhu-themed Yahtzee, but it was fun for us.

We ended up winning while the other group was still finishing up their game, so we moved on to something simpler...

While we played Elder Sign, another group setup my favorite Catan game. I believe they had a full table: Jerry, Rich, Curtis, Rich... maybe someone else?

Anyway, this is a great game with one of the all-time best game props - the rocket ship. I love that this game has a bit more crunch to it and isn't as cut-and-dried as regular Settlers.

My favorite Catan, certainly.

I love this game and it's a great game for the evenings, once the crunchy games are done and we just want to play something simpler but still very fun.

We played a few games of this, as it scales well from 4-8, and it seems that Rich ended up developing a solid strategy. I still am not sure how to win, but I know this will probably hit the table again this year.

Love Letter is one of my favorite filler games now and it hits the table regularly during regular gaming sessions. If only it scaled past four players.

We played our first game on Thursday as a quick filler.

But then on Saturday morning we had a couple new faces added to the mix, including my good friend Gregory. This day was his first introduction to me and my friends and he hit it off by taking the first victory of the day.

Saturday is always a bit of a mixed bag emotionally for me. We always have the most people show up (14 on this particular day) and the house is buzzing with gaming goodness.

But it also means that DC is almost over, and so I always try to stay head-down and focused on my gaming.

And so we moved onto the center piece of the day - two Formula De races. I always like to have something that everyone can participate in, and while very few games scale to 14 people, we ran a couple races (one on Friday, one Saturday) that allowed people to participate in a tournament and race for the crown.

I took second place in the first race, and we allowed anyone in the first six spots to race again in the second, allowing also for any new comers.

But as it turned out, my years of playing this game paid off. This used to be our go-to game for DC and we've played dozens of games over the years. And so I quickly got out front and dominated the game, handily claiming first place.

Great racing. Great tournament.

While we finished racing, the group played a few games of this and Greg proved his mettle.

At this point, with so many people, we blazed through quite a few easy and quick games, with people shifting between tables and learning new games.

DC was in full swing.

One of my favorite parts of DC is introducing new players to old games and having them bring new strategies that disrupt any preconceived notions.

I love this game - it scales well to 6 and has a great bidding and bluffing mechanic that you don't find in other games. But when Curtis showed up and began bidding only when he got his way, everything changed.

Previously, if you were building a bid, people would be fine with getting a share, even if they were the only ones who could move the deal forward. However, when Curtis showed up, he showed how the game should really be played.

He looked at the board, said "I'm the only one who can seal the deal? Then I want three shares." We were agog. What? You're not playing nice. Ah, I see. This is how the game was meant to be played.

Now we play a much more cutthroat version of this game, where people will much more quickly dump bids if they don't get what they want. Brutal but so much more fun.

By this point the evening was winding down and people were wandering off after a great day of gaming. With those of us left, we sat down for a game of bean planting.

I love this as a late night game. It scales to 7, involves some luck, and has many opportunities to screw your neighbor. With a healthy dose of deal making and strategy, it's a perfect way to end a long day of gaming.

Once this was done, there were enough of us to play a few more rounds of Avalon, until we had to finally concede that DC was just about done.

Time for bed...

Sunday morning used to just be about cleaning up the fridge and shooting the shit as people head out into their days.

But Glenn and Tony didn't have to get to the airport for a while, and Curtis stopped by for one more game, so there were six of us left for something easier.

The request was for something new (we were done with Avalon after 14 games over four days), so I busted out Alhambra. It doesn't get much play normally, but it is a great low key game for six.

And then, as is fitting, I won the last game of the weekend. We played more than 40 games over five days of gaming, and had the biggest attendance ever at DC.

I call it a total success. Can't wait for this year, just a month away.
