My 7th Geekway convention -- held May 15-18, 2014 at Westport plaza. This event had 1000+ attendees and the convention space was much better this year. We weren't so cramped and there is more room to grow in this space. A big plus was the basic hotel food vendor setup right between the stairs to the main game area and the library.

The previous 3 years as geeklists for reference

First game of the convention and something fairly light to start. I've heard this described in reviews as bingo for gamers. It does have that feel with the randomness of the draw from the bag but it's still fun. There is the choice of where to put the worker and which card to pick up once a goal has been completed. The winner ended up with an extra completed goal because the winning number's result was to complete another goal automatically.

This started out looking very easy but in a 5 player game this is quite a lot to watch and plan for. At first I was concentrating on just completing my personal goal and making points. Finally I started looking at the public goals and seeing if i was in contention for them. I don't think I got most popular vendor either. It's a lot to watch for when looking at what I have completed vs what everyone else has completed and who will complete a goal before I have a chance to harvest and deliver.

Played 2 games of this as the first one was primarily learning. But, I actually did better in the first as the 2nd one I concentrated too much on getting orders out of the queue but not on the delivery part. Next time I need to balance orders vs deliveries better.

This has quite the interesting mechanic of minute sand timers used as worker placement and a fixed 30 minute timer for the entire game. The "race" is delivering as many goods as possible but realizing that if any orders for a color are left then no points are scored in that color.

As a filler Kip pulled out some ice house pyramids and we played Zendo. It's fairly open ended and my mind couldn't think out of the box enough to determine the rules of placement very easily. It was more fun to create a rule for others to find. The fun isn't with making a really complex rule that no one gets, it's finding the very simplistic rule that folks get within a few tries without too much frustration.

Nearly all the games I played over the weekend were new to me... most I've at least heard of before and Glass road was no exception. I like the designer's other games so this one was on my short list of games to try to play this weekend. The resource rondel is the one quirky part of the game. Even though warned it still caught me off guard near the end when I thought I had wood when the arrows had moved mid-turn. I do like the role reveal mechanic where you have to bluff the roles to weigh whether or not you piggy-back on someone's selection.

Next was probably the heaviest game of the weekend. I remember seeing this played a lot last year and missed getting to play it. As this has almost no luck and lots of decisions it was quite the brain burner. I had the chaos-magician which I'm told aren't really the best starting race. Still, I know a lot more now about the game flow than I did before.

As I needed something lighter I saw some folks opening up Cash and Guns and asked to join. While I wasn't close to winning it was a fun party game with the black foam guns. The game has been out a while and I see it played nearly every convention but this was the first chance I can remember playing it.

I continued with the same group as they brought out this light card game. It's not one I'd normally play myself but that's why conventions are great for trying something new and finding something that you unexpectedly like. The last game of Friday, headed home to recharge for tomorrow.

Friday morning had Jay (ynnen) pull in myself and a few folks to play: Castle of Magic. The Castle Cursed is actually the expansion that we played as it added some critical balance items. This was one of Jay's favorites and he explained it well. The dated components and roll and move mechanics were a bit of a surprise but it was still quite fun.

My first play of PIX and it was with a large group including Jay Moore and his daughter. Another draw the word and have the group guess what it is game. But, it's good in that bad drawers aren't a problem when moving big pixel squares around to make an image. It's quite tough to use a minimum number. "Plaster cast" was one phrase that myself and Jay were trying to get the group to say and that's extremely difficult. Another funny one was "dunce hat" or "exhaust pipe".

Used as a filler while I waited for the microgame playtesting to start at 2pm. It's another party game that has one team trying to have one person get the rest of the team to say a word. It uses bits to point out concepts that allow others to guess rather than using speech, actions, sounds..etc.

At 2pm on Saturday there were 20+ microgames being playtested in a speed date manner with 30 minutes of instruction+playtime and then feedback.

First microgame playtested. It was a 3 player abstract with each player using a primary color with secondary colors as intermediate player pieces. This type of game isn't my favorite but for what it was I thought it was well balanced and thought out.

2nd microgame that was almost at the time limit of 30 minutes for explanation and playing. It involved pulling cubes and matching them on collection cards with additional action cards that could be used to manipulate rules or purchase collection cards.

Only played the basic game with 4 players. As we were all new and reading the rules the special personalities and custom move cards were removed. Playing the 4 move cards felt like Roborally and it was easy to have your plans go awry mid move and have to scrape together an alternate plan with the same move cards. While at the end game I had the most cash it didn't all convert to points in the end.

The last game of Friday night was Bora Bora. I'm typically a Feld fan and like the interaction of many different systems. The player board was really confusing at first but by the end it all made sense. I didn't concentrate on the men/women at the first enough and I see now how the bonuses during the man+woman phase are critical for getting new actions.

First game of Saturday morning had a really great set of components and art and later I looked up the artist and yep, Michael Menzel (Stone Age, Legend of Andor, World Without End, etc). It's primarily an area majority game but the real interaction is the turn order ball ramp. My key problem was keeping too many workers out on the board and not pulling them back to score the cheap points and trying to wait out for the larger payouts.

This is another party game where you're trying to get your teammates to say a particular word. Both teams are trying at once to find words about the size of newsprint cut into little word segments and come up with a description of the word. I had the toughest time trying to convey the idea of a "janitor" men, clean, trash, closet, kitchen it sounds easy there but having to find the words out of hundreds is a challenge.
