Status Indicator - the die is used to keep track of a game status.
-- Doubling cube in Backgammon
-- Pips could also be the "strength" of a man.
-- Arrow Cubes has arrows on cube faces to indicate in which direction cube must move.

-----------
Geeklist has a dual purpose.

(1) Collect list of games that use this mechanic

(2) I'm trying to figure out various mechanics that use dice. So post if you think that this game "twists" the mechanic enough to be something different.

(Osiris Ra) submitted this game to a previous geeklist I created on Dice Allocation Mechanics, saying that "Dice are used as pawns in a Draughts type game, with each 6-sided die representing how much damage it can take." To my mind, that was a different use of dice, since it didn't involve allocation of rolled values. But it is an interesting non-traditional use of dice. Hence this new geeklist.

Proteus is an interesting chess variant where each face of a die shows a different chess piece, with one non-traditional piece added.

You don't roll the dice, but each turn you move one die on a chessboard in normal chess fashion (moving it as the chess piece depicted on the top of that die would dictate), then you rotate one die such that it is one level up or down from the piece it had showing.

Cool dice. Cool game. No rolling.

So the chess piece that the die represents is its status.
