Tough choice this year between this, Evo, Compounded, Battle Line and Martin Wallace's playtest - all new to me.
The Cave had a neat feel of exploration, trying to plan ahead for what you might run into and still being surprised. I like the way points are purely based on exploration and discovery - you're not mining the cave, just finding cool formations and swimming through underground lakes. Majority bonuses at the end made a nice touch. Looks neat on the table too and all the pieces work well. May have to find myself a copy!

Played a lot of old(er) favourites but this one was a new one for me. Got to play it with Shem himself, really enjoyed it. Beautiful game, lovely artwork with a cool theme. Definitely one of my Wellycon highlights this year. Cannot wait for my copy to arrive.

Only came along on the Saturday. But got 7 games played with 3 new to me
Of the new to me games: I really enjoyed the The Witches: A Discworld Game even though it ended abruptly when Damon failed to deal with some cheeky elves. This was probably my favourite new to me game. Firefly: The Game was fun but way too long and had very little to do when it was not your turn. Still, I would play this again but given the choice between this and Merchant of Venus (second edition) I would take Venus. Unexploded Cow was ridiculous but just the right sort of thing to end on.
Also played: Endeavor - Thanks Jason for teaching us. I need to play this more. Eight-Minute Empire Elk Fest - I think we spent more time on the floor looking for flicked pieces on that hideous carpet than we did playing the game. Forbidden Island

For me it is a choice between 2 of Martin Wallace's prototypes that I played on Saturday. Ships a typical no luck development game with a worker placement element, and the other a buckets of dice war game with a technology development focus. I wanted to have another go on Sunday but was too busy doing my job.

Great fun, very nice art style/design (Scoreboard is a periodic table), was a great game to end Sunday with.
The trading in the game is good, everyone has a view of what can be traded for and what other players are going for.

Along with Matt and Susan from Featherston we introduced Andrew to this worker placement game. I like the mix of actions and luck in this one, and it was my most successful play of the convention!
Also worker placement-y was Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar which seemed a little too convoluted at first try, though with a neat theme and cool plastic gears, and Snowdonia the train building game. The rules for the second game were a little confusing for a first effort - none of us had played before - but I liked it quite a bit.

This next generation Agricola makes it better. They've taken out some of the overhead and made it more streamlined. Still no hope of doing everything you want, but less frustration of getting nothing you want done!
Taking out the cards and having a central list of buildings is great and making everything 1 point makes scoring much easier. Enough new stuff (mines, ore and rubies) to make it interesting for old hands, and fun for new ppl at the same time.
If someone hasn't tried any of these I would say do this one first - still complex, and a long game, but makes it much easier to work with.
we had a 'round 0' by accident and found we were struggling to make points in the last round, so don't forget to turn over your first round card!
cheers, Ceedee

32 player was good. I should have pretended to be the president, or pretended to be a red shy guy. Next time!!!! Curse you red!
Also at Wellycon 2014 I played * Ankh Morepork. Loved this game! * Taught a bunch to play The Resistance:Avalon. I was a baddie GOODIE 3 times in a row.! And one new player totally couldn't get the "be discrete" idea - which was a laugh. * Nox - Sat with a bunch and showed them how to play this fun simple game * Stone Age - one of my all time favorites. * Shems prototype (shhh) * Another awesome looking protytpe ... real spy-vs-spy stuff (say no more) * Some Arkham/Elder sign game I cant remember the name of. UPDATE: yep - Eldrich Horror * Coup. Muah ha ha .. they got sucked in by my lies from the start!!!! * Bohnanza * Forbidden Island
Wanted to play: * Cash n guns * a lot more Resistance / Avalon * The Terry Pratchet "The Witches" * Ultimate Werewolf
