This is my first try at a folding gameboard (you may notice from the picture that I glued the main board onto a thrifted Trivial Pursuit board), and my first use of Mod Podge in a project. Can't say I'm a fan of Mod Podge. Not sure what I expected it to be, but opening the bottle and finding thin PVA inside was a surprise. My current printer is an inkjet, so trying to seal printouts with Mod Podge causes colors to run, even when using the "freezer trick": maybe that only works with photo paper? It won't be my last try with it, since I have the anti-frugal instinct of not getting rid of a mostly full bottle of Mod Podge and instead buying other things to try to make it work, but I'm disappointed at the moment.

As for the game, it looks like fun, and I will definitely be trying it out with family and friends. If anyone notices runny colors I'll say it's thematic.

Also, I didn't have 30 appropriately-colored meeples lying around, so I used indented dice, Lego brick towers, and tiles from Scrabble, Qwirkle, and Mahjong.

Decided to try out this Japanese micro gem, and what better dungeon to use than the one of Lord Dredmor?

I put one hero on each side of the You card. The others are just double-sided.

The gradients on the items didn't come out too great, but overall I'm happy how it looks. More cards would've meant I could've picked even more interesting items, of course, but I think I chose a decent mix.

Pac Man the Board Game

I saw the game Whacky Wit

on Game Night https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlTIRteeg1E and I wanted to try it. I knew I did not have the skill to reproduce the game, but just the flat paper version of it was not adequate either. Clearly part of the appeal of the game was its clever and tactile design.

So I came up with a tactile design that I could make using the punch a hole in paper mechanic of Kayanak.

I constructed the game board using a poster frame. The top layer is a laminated PacMac type "screen". The paper is tissue paper. And the bottom layer is the hardboard from the poster frame.

The goal of Pacman is to punch holes in all the spots and the ghosts try to stop Packy.

Packy's dice is a yellow 12-sided and the Ghost player rolls a special 8 and 12 sided dice I made for the game. I had a little trouble with the marker running when I sprayed it with acrylic clear coat.

But overall I'm happy with the end result. It is not a game I will play with gamers including my wife. But, the kids and I have lots of fun.

Quest for the Open Tavern is part of this year's 2-player game design contest. I've updated the game to playtest version 2 and assembled high quality components from Printerstudio (the cards) and Print and Play Productions (counters and cubes). I'm using a $1 crayon box from Wal-Mart to hold the games. I constructed eight sets of these high quality prototypes to send out to playtesters this month.

Seeking Blind Playtesters and Feedback/Reviews

By David Thompson (with PnP development by Keith Swingruber and art by Michael Parla)

Inspired by E. Nate Kurth

Number of Players: 2

Estimated Playtime: 15 minutes

Summary
In Quest for the Open Tavern, players engage in a competitive blind bid character placement game that embraces DIRECT player interaction. This ain’t your dad’s Euro! One player takes the role of the “Wayfarers of Devastation” — a party of Adventurers that recently slew a Great Red Wyrm (or so they claim) and want to celebrate with random acts of drunkenness and senseless vandalism. But they’ve come to the wrong town! The other player takes the role of Governor Xaggy of Hommlette — he's heard about this band of ne’er-dowells and he’s ready for them — he will stop at nothing to keep the town safe. Complicating the issue is the land is under siege from Zombies, Demons, Drunken Wizards, and a well organized Thieves’ Guild, any of which can force the Wayfarers and Governor Xaggy to become uneasy allies.

I mentioned this last month, and I'll mention it again. I had to make a TON of copies because I demoed and playtested this at Game o Rama in Atlanta, GA on Memorial Day weekend. I'm also sending out a revised version (version 4) to my blind playtest groups. I'm winding down the playtests and gearing up for an August Kickstarter, so it's paramount to get as many copies out for feedback as possible.

If you're interested in checking the game out, let me know.

3-6 players | Ages: 13+ | 25 minutes

Loyalty | Deduction | Deception | Betrayal

You are a priest of a troubled Temple. A Thieves’ Guild has emerged and is challenging your Temple for influence over the land. You must decide whether to work along with your brethren in the fight against the Thieves Guild or betray your brothers and guide the Thieves’ Guild to prominence.

In Allegiance, players use cards to adjust the influence of the Thieves’ Guild and Temple. At the end of the game, the organization with the most influence emerges to prominence. Players begin with an allegiance to the Temple. However, that allegiance can shift during the game as players accrue points that align them with either the Temple or the Thieves’ Guild. All players with allegiance to the Temple win if the Temple has the most influence. One player with allegiance to the Thieves’ Guild wins if the Thieves’ Guild has the most influence.

Will the players maintain allegiance with the Temple and work cooperatively to try to achieve victory? Or will one or more of them turn rogue and align with the Thieves’ Guild in a high-risk, high-reward attempt to win it all?

Components Required to Play

- Rules, 2 pages
- 96 cards (possibly increased to 114 for six players in version 4)

High Resolution Downloads
You can download the PnP components from the BGG entry for the game, or get the high resolution files from the game's website. (BGG limits the file sizes that can be uploaded to the files section of game entries).

I am thinking about giving the space-themed "micro-4x" offering by the awesome Todd Sanders, Parsec X, a go. It's fairly simple PnP really.

Ironically, we have really enjoyed Tiny Epic Kingdoms as of late. I was thinking to myself - "This micro 4X thing would be a blast in space too!" Then I started brain storming with my 18 year old - different races, maybe even different types of ships, upgrades, planets, warp holes - everyone would play on their own "card" - similar to TEK. Then in the June G4GG, someone offered Parsec X - and I realized that Todd had already designed it!

Not only that, but did some nifty artwork and had a nice resource collection mechanism as well.

So off to the printer! I'll come back and post some pictures and perhaps a mini-review by month's end.

I've revamped the Damage Deck with a new card back.
Also, I have added a file containing 40 numbered cards (beside the hit zone cards), in a bellcurve distribution.
So, if you need a deck of cards that works differently than the generic decks - go for it

Another unfinished prototype (I seem to be drawn to them lately. cry
This one is called 'Omega Galaxy' by Lajos Brons (2005?).

Just some pics (from my gallery) and comments after the first play.

Betcha don't have this one! Trying a variant where players draw the tiles, as opposed to a standard layout.

Drawing the tiles and placing them where the player deems most useful is working and feels "right".

Starvation, damage and disease were very hard to overcome: this proved to be a very resource poor galaxy. Needs tweaking and a bit of streamlining (and some flavor text on some of the tiles), but leaves me wanting to play again.

Finished off this solitaire prototype being developed by Tony Boydell. Looking forward to getting this one to the table...shouldn't be difficult since it's a solitaire game!

Finally got around to playing this one. Rules have evolved a bit since I printed the game out with the key change being that there is now a 12 minute time limit - you must finish the deck or have all systems repaired and/or disabled to "win" and score the game. Played my first game without the time limit and found very little tension and scored 38, but still found the game fairly interesting and entertaining. For my second game I played with the timer, and it definitely racheted up the tension considerably, and I think it fits thematically...and it also made the game much more interesting and fun. Still did pretty well in scoring a 28, but I probably need to bump up the monolith's starting position to ramp up the difficulty.

I also appreciate having four different possibilities for all six systems, giving each game a different feel/plan of attack.

This is my first "real" print and play attempt. Up until now I've just done card games where I print the cards on regular paper and sleeve them with a playing card behind them. I applied paper to cardboard and cut everything with an xacto knife for my prototype of Stranded No More.
