During a recent episode of Curious George, the man with the yellow hat commented that magnetism was his favorite invisible force. While this popped the subject of the four fundamental forces into my head, my wife quickly piped up asking what other invisible forces there were. She brought up gravity, and I asked her if she knew the other two fundamental forces. She confessed she couldn't remember as she had banished physics from her memory. So I listed them off, but honestly had trouble explaining the last on the list.blush

Feel free to comment and/or clarify. Also, any discussion on unified theories are welcome...I'm always eager to learn.

Gravity

This is probably the most well known fundamental force as it acts on us every day. This is an attractive force and is very weak, but acts over a long range.

Electromagnetic Force

The electromagnetic force can be attractive (between opposite charges) or repulsive (between like charges). It acts only on objects with an electric charge and is weaker than the Strong Force, but acts over a long range.

Strong Force

This is the force that holds the nucleus of atoms together. It is a very strong force (hence its name) but has a very short range. (FYI - my wife was thoroughly unimpressed by its name.)

Weak Force

This is probably (at least it is for me) the least understood of the four primary forces. It is responsible for radioactive decay and neutrino interactions, and I have no idea exactly what that means.

This includes both the strong and electromagnetic forces. In the diagram below, a gluon (white pieces) is holding quarks together, while a photon (yellow) carries the electromagnetic force.
