Spiel, held in the city of Essen each October, is one of Germany's two major game conventions, the other being the International Toy Fair in Nürnberg each February. While Spielwarenmesse is a business-only trade show, Spiel is open to the public, drawing roughly 150,000 people over four days. Hundreds of new games will be introduced at Spiel 2015, which takes place October 8-11. This preview covers games that publishers plan to release at Spiel or in the months leading up to it; listings for some smaller publishers show all titles released since Spiel 2014. Some details:

-----• This Preview is organized alphabetically by publisher, with games ordered alphabetically under a publisher's heading. Click on a game's name to head to its dedicated page to see more images, read the forums, and so on.

-----• In most cases, if a game appears in multiple versions, typically due to it being released in multiple languages, each version will appear under its own publisher.

-----• If you subscribe to this Preview, you'll receive update notices whenever an item is added or edited.

-----• If you don't care to read about a game and are logged in, click the red X to hide the game listing for both now and future visits. Choose "Personal" for the reason when doing so. You cannot hide a publisher due to this Preview's special set-up.

-----Please refrain from posting "Which booth?", "What's the price?" type of comments since they trigger subscription notices. Publisher booth numbers, preorder information, game designer and artist signings, and more will be added once that info comes available.

Note that this information has been cobbled together from hundreds of sources, so inaccuracies may have crept in despite my best efforts. I will update game pages as I receive additional information, and BGG users will undoubtedly do the same, thereby keeping this Preview as up-to-date as the BGG database itself.

If you're a designer or publisher with information to share – or if you have details about an upcoming Spiel 2015 release – please send me email (wericmartin @ gmail.com). I'll respond as best as I can given the tidal wave of data flowing through the game world in anticipation of the most exciting game convention in the world: Spiel!

Description:

City of Ideologies is a strategic board game in a futuristic setting for two up to four players.

Humanity had to leave Earth centuries ago and travels in search of a new home in a huge city by the vastness of space. Players assume the role of leaders who are trying to reshape the city after their vision in an erupting revolution against the old system. For this they must legislate, kindle demonstration, gain influence over the districts of the city and always keep an eye on the mood of the people and the changing game board.

Both the game board, as well as the laws are constantly changing, it is important to keep a cool head, gain advantage through agreements with other players or through own concepts or intrigue to weaken the position of the other players.

City of Ideologies combines different game mechanics: You move protesters across the board, which turns around three times each round, role dice and push your luck, gain influence in districts, use different cards to perform unique actions and at the end of each round, one person is chosen by election of all players who is allowed to change a paragraph / rule mechanism.

Each action may be carried out in various ways. In most cases, they are paid with influence points, which vary from faction to faction depending on their main focus. If a player can not muster enough points for an action, then he can trade with his fellow players. Or he activates a district, which lets him perform the action or pulls a card that allows him to perform the action or uses a person of his faction. Or he changes a paragraph, so that the action costs less points.

The player who collects the most victory-points will win the game after five rounds. The way you collect victory points depends on the one hand on your ideology, which you choose at the beginning of the game. So every player gains victory points in different ways. For example, one player gets a victory point every time he prevents other players actions. Another player collects victory points if the other players give him voluntarily cards or influence points. On the other hand players can gain victory points on certain districts, by cards and paragraphs.

At the end the player will be victorious, who is both the most accurate follower of his ideology, as has also been successful in competitive areas.

Description:

In the near future, both rapid space exploration and terraforming technology have opened a new science field allowing mankind to explore, discover and terraform planets for habitation.

Players manage a planetary development company and compete in the planet auction market for the developing rights of these newly explored planets.

Once acquired, players will have to strategically develop industry infrastructure to get the most out of each planet. Once the construction on the planet is launched, players will receive credits according to the planet's industry infrastructure. At the end of the game, players will also be rewarded on their planet portfolio.

Players will keep bidding, developing and launching planets and the game ends when the galaxy is fully explored. At this stage, the planetary development company with the most credits will be the winner.

Description:

It's the dawn of the Livonian Crusade, and Estonia is being conquered by several nations. The Danish forces of Valdemar the Great are arriving from the West. The Crusaders, led by Bishop Albert, are crossing the borders from the South. Vsevolod, Prince of Novgorod, is attacking from the East. There's only one hope for Estonians: Lembitu, the leader, who is brave enough to fight against all the conquerors.

Lembitu is a co-operative board game inspired by the events of the Livonian Crusade in Estonia. Players are in the role of generals, fighting against conquerers and initiating rebellions. Actions can be used for movement, fighting or uprisings — but as each player has only a limited number of actions, they must plan carefully. The direction and speed of enemy movement is decided by dice, but the enemy's ultimate goal is to reach Paide. If they don't reach it within a fixed amount of turns, the players win.

Other Information:
• A mini-expansion for the game, Lembitu: Heavy Cavalry, is free with purchase of the base game as long as supplies last. Here's a description:

Quote:
Lembitu: Heavy Cavalry, an expansion for the Lembitu board game, consists of twenty castles that can be used as fortifications, along with six knights; when two blank sides are rolled with the dice of one color, reinforcements arrive for those enemy forces and one knight is placed in front of the chain of enemy units.

Description:

In a distant future, scientists were able to build small alternate Earths. Exactly 504 such Earths have thus far been built. The scientists programmed each of these Worlds with an individual set of laws and rules which the residents strictly follow and consider most important for their lives. These may be exploration, consumption, economics, military, etc., and each is unique. You can visit all of these 504 alternate Earths to experience how the people are living, and decide which of these worlds harbors the best civilization. On which World do you want to live? Explore them all and decide!

504 is a game that creates 504 different games out of one box. The game consists of nine modules:

  • Module 1: Pick-Up & Deliver
  • Module 2: Race
  • Module 3: Privileges
  • Module 4: Military
  • Module 5: Exploration
  • Module 6: Roads
  • Module 7: Majorities
  • Module 8: Production
  • Module 9: Shares

In each single game, you take three different modules from the nine available and assemble them in any order you like to create a new game. (504 = 9 * 8 * 7 = the number of distinct permutations of three items from a set of nine. The order of the three game modules is significant, and modules cannot be repeated.) For example, you can play:

  • a racing game that expands through exploration with technology improving the racing or exploration (World "253").
  • an 18XX-style stock game with network building for income and production sites to provide workers for the road building (World "968").
  • a war game with a pick-up and deliver economy and bonus scoring from majorities ("World 417").

Each single game takes from 30 to 120 minutes to play.

Other Information: • The English-language edition of 504 can be found at the Stronghold Games booth (3-M107).

• MSRP €75; discounted to €65 for sales at Spiel 2015. Notes 2F-Spiele's Henning Kröpke: "2F-Spiele donates €1,50 per copy to 'Kindergruppe Kleine Tiger e.V.' in Bremen (a pre-kindergarten children's group)."

• Copies of 504 sold at Spiel 2015, whether via 2F-Spiele or Stronghold Games, will come with a promotional double-sided poster (86x86 cm) that shows the possible map shapes, thereby allowing gamers to build the maps directly on the poster, if desired. (Kröpke says that Stronghold Games will also have these posters available at BGG.CON 2015.)

Description:

The expansion Power Grid: The Stock Companies offers players a completely new game experience, specifically three new ways to play either Power Grid or Power Grid Deluxe.

The main game is The Stock Companies: As shareholders, the players want to get control over different stock companies so they can acquire the greatest wealth.

The two variants are a little bit closer to the well-known Power Grid experience.

The Biggest Electricity Distributors: In this first variant the players are shareholders who try to get shares of the most successful companies: the companies that supply electricity to the most cities.

The Competition of the Private Companies: In this second variant the players control their private stock companies and try to establish them successfully on the electricity market. They sell shares of their own companies to generate more cash and they are able to buy shares of other players’ companies. Thus, they can also earn a portion of the other players’ successes.

If you own all Power Grid maps and the expansion New Power Plants, this expansion offers 222 new possibilities to play Power Grid and Power Grid deluxe.

The rules for this expansion are based on module 9 "Shares" of the game 504. As 504 is a modular game system, we are able to take that module and mix it with Power Grid. The results are three different options to play this expansion. For the main game, we focused on the first option of the shares module, so you will discover a lot of surprises. Both variants are a little bit closer to the well-known Power Grid experience; they are for gamers who want to experiment with the game system.

Other Information: • Since Rio Grande Games won't be at Spiel 2015, 2F-Spiele says that it will have a limited supply — "approx. 200 copies", according to 2F's Henning Kröpke — of the English-language edition of this expansion for sale at the show.

• Far more copies of the German-language expansion will be on hand.

• MSRP €15; discounted to €12 for sales at Spiel 2015.

Description:

Who hasn't dreamed of building the best treehouse in the world? Now it's time to live that dream!

In Best Treehouse Ever, players compete to build their best treehouse, outfitting their treehouse with cool rooms, while also making sure that their tree doesn't tip over and that their rooms are more impressive than all of their friends' rooms at the end of the game.

Building takes place over three weeks/rounds, and in each round, players use card drafting and spatial reasoning to add five new rooms to their treehouse. Players must pay attention to the other treehouses being built since they take turns determining which types of rooms score for everyone at the end of each round.

At the end of the third week, the winner is the player with the best treehouse ever!

Description:

Prehistoric people were fishing, hunting and gathering during their wandering. It was important to carry as few things with them as possible in order to move easily. They couldn’t speak, but Dudab was one among their primitive words meaning sorry. Lead everybody else by the nose, and keep ahead of everyone.

When it's your turn in Dudab, you can choose one of the two possibilities: lay down a card or draw a card. Then the next player's turn in clockwise order starts. Players need to collect as few cards and as few victory points as possible. For this aim, they have to be very tactical, and say "Dudab" with proper timing. The player who can lead everybody else by the nose and collect the fewest victory points wins.

Other Information:

BANG! Gold Rush is an expansion for the card game BANG! that can be used with the base game alone or mixed with other expansions. In addition to featuring eight new characters, BANG! Gold Rush adds two new mechanisms to game play:

• Players can collect gold nuggets to buy equipment, with the equipment giving your character new abilities and you the chance to develop new strategies.

• Even when a player is shot down during the game, he can come back to play with the Shadow Gunslinger variant. When that dead player's turn comes around, he temporarily re-enters play and takes his turn as if he were alive, now giving an eliminated player the chance to affect the outcome of a game. Look out for shots from beyond the grave!

Instead of flipping a clue token when correctly playing the fifth card of a color, flip a bonus token instead and carry out the special action. The action must be carried out immediately. These actions allow the fireworks master (i.e., the oldest player in the game per the ABACUSSPIELE rules) to:

  • Flip a clue token already used (as in the base game) [×2].
  • Choose a card from the discard pile and shuffle it back into the draw pile [×2].
  • Choose another player and tell her the color AND value of a card in her hand (does not require use of a clue token).
  • Flip up to two unused thunderstorm/fuse tokens to flip an equal number of used clue tokens.

20. Board Game: Mexica [Average Rating:7.19 Overall Rank:498]
Designed by:
Published by:
Number of players: 2 − 4
Playing time: 90 minutes
Suggested ages: 10 and up
Categories:
Mechanics: Show More »
Language:
German
Description:

Mexica plots the development of the city of Tenochtitlan on an island in lake Texcoco. Players attempt to partition it into districts, place buildings, and construct canals.

Districts are formed by completely surrounding areas of the island with water and then placing a District marker. The player who founds a district scores points immediately.

Canals and Lake Texcoco act as a quick method of moving throughout the city. Players erect bridges and move from one bridge to the next, which costs 1 action point regardless of the distance. They must also erect buildings. This costs action points, the exact number being dependent upon the building's size.

In the scoring phases of the game, players score points (El Grande style) based upon their dominance in a District. In the 4 player game, players with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd most buildings score decreasing numbers of points.

Only districts are scored in the first scoring round.

In the second scoring round at the end of the game, all land areas are scored, not just districts.

The player with the most points wins.

Mexica is the third game in the Mask Trilogy.

Other Information: • ABACUSSPIELE notes on its website that only three hundred copies of the German-language edition of this new version of Mexica are being produced.

21. Board Game: Tichu [Average Rating:7.60 Overall Rank:104]
Designed by:
Published by:
Number of players: 4
Playing time: 60 minutes
Suggested ages: 10 and up
Categories:
Mechanics:
Language:

Description:

Tichu is a partnership climbing card game, and the object of play is to rid yourself of your hand, preferably while scoring points in the process.

The deck is a standard 52-card pack with four special cards added: dog, phoenix, dragon and Mah Jong (1). When it's your turn, you may either beat the current top card combination — single card, pair of cards, sequence of pairs, full house, etc. — or pass. If play passes all the way back to the player who laid the top cards, he wins the trick, clears the cards, and can lead the next one. The card led determines the only combination of cards that can be played on that trick, so if a single card is led, then only single cards are played; if a straight of seven cards is led, then only straights of seven cards can be played, etc.

The last player out in a round gives all the cards he won to the player who exited first, and the last player's unplayed cards are handed to the opposite team. Fives, tens and Kings are worth 5, 10 and 10 points, with each hand worth one hundred points without bonuses — but the bonuses are what drive the game. At the start of a round, each player can call "Tichu" prior to her playing any card. This indicates that she thinks that she can empty her hand first this round; if she does so, her team scores 100 points, and if not, it loses 100 points. Cards are dealt at the start of a round in a group of eight and a group of six; a player can call "Grand Tichu" after looking at only her first eight cards for a ±200 point bonus. If both players on a team exit a round prior to either player on the opposite team, then no points are scored for cards and the winning team earns 200 points (with Tichu/Grand Tichu bonuses and penalties being applied as normal).

The first team to 1,000 points wins.

Other Information: • This edition of Tichu uses the graphics of the versions released by Filosofia Éditions and is a limited print run that doesn't replace the existing version from ABACUSSPIELE.

Description:

Zooloretto Würfelspiel: Baby Boom is an expansion to Zooloretto Würfelspiel. It adds a few different new features:
- Instead of extra points, the reward for filling an enclosure first is an expansion with three more spaces for the given animal. Other players can't use these expansions.
- Heart symbols on specific enclosure spaces mark 'parent' animals, and as soon as the second heart symbol is crossed in an enclosure, a baby is born (another cross is added). Lions with expansion may even have two babies.
- For money you can still release animals from the barn OR score them for star symbols. There are star symbols on enclosure spaces as well. The more star symbols a player collects during game, the more points they can get (1 star symbol is worth only 1 point but 5 star symbols score 8...)
- Also, in the barn only one animal (of the player's choice) can be placed in infinite amount. For further animals of other species other animals' spaces have to be used (thus scoring -2 points for each).

Other Information:
• In addition to this item, designer Michael Schacht notes that a Zooloretto mini-expansion will be available at the ABACUSSPIELE booth, as has been the case most years since Zooloretto first appeared in 2007.

Description:

Portal of Morth is a competitive board game inspired by tower defense video games. During the game, the players have a team of heroes with which they will fight against an ever increasing amount of powerful enemies. As a general rule, the game has a duration of five rounds, with one wave per player each round. Each wave is divided in four phases:

1. Lord Morth's phase: The starting player rolls the enemy dice into the portal board to determine in which path the enemies enter the boards. To do this, the player rolls as many enemy dice as indicated on the turn track, and a 12-sided die to determine the exact position of the portal. Also, the players receive cards to trump their opponent's strategies.

2. Portal phase: The players may pay gold to turn the portal, modifying the initial enemy distribution. In turn order, each player may pay as much gold as they want to move the portal in any direction. Once all players have moved the portal or have passed their turn, they take the enemy dice that ended the phase in their zones of the portal board, placing them in the corresponding paths.

3. Heroes' phase: Players move and attack with their team of characters, trying to eliminate all threats from their boards.

4. Assault phase: Enemies advance, trying to exit the player's boards. The starting player rolls a three-sided die, and each player has to add the resulting number to the initial movement value of each enemy. If an enemy escapes a player's board, the player takes damage.

Once all rounds are finished, the game ends and the player who has the fewest damage points wins!
