A 'Hedgerow Hell' deluxe ASL scenario to be precise, titled 'Repulsed'

Played by: Gordon and Russell
We were actually just finishing this scenario off following two earlier sessions with it. Russell had looked firmly in charge for most of the game but coming into the this evening's final two and a half remaining turns it was pretty close. The scenario set on 16th June 1944 (almost 70 years to the day) had the Americans (me) trying to dislodge German forces (Russell) from a village nestled deep in bocage country in Normandy.

The early part of the game had seen Russell rush two self-propelled guns into the southern approaches to the village and squat there impervious to several bazooka rounds bouncing off them - although one of them was immobilised by now, though still firing. The US infantry had however managed to flank to the West and had secured the first of 8 building hexes needed for a victory - but there really wasn't enough of them, only 3 and a half squads, and not much time.

Despite the fact that the evening started with Russell managing to roll two double ones and a three in his first five rolls (rolling low is good) I managed to knock out both of the SPG's which gave the surviving US infantry a bit more freedom to move and for the US armour to rumble forward, albeit still cautious of Germans panzerfausts.

It was on a knife edge for the whole session with the US managing to secure nine building hexes on their last movt turn but then needing to survive the inevitable German counterattack. Russell retook one building but the US infantry held firm in the other, despite being ambushed in close combat. Once again it went to the last roll.

After a heart felt toast to the sadly departed Rik Mayall, Alex Josh Ash and I kicked off with this 14 year old classic. Its been a few years since I played it and the others were first timers so I needed to remind myself of the rules but soon we were off.

Its a game played over 7 rounds where you employ talented professionals and by giving them their requisite building and inspirational surroundings they develop artistic or scientific advancements which score you a 'work value' which can be cash in for money and/ or points. Each round the minimum value of the 'Work' increases so you need to work harder in order to reach this threshold.

We were all neck and neck until round six where Josh produced two works and shot into a substantial lead. Unfortunately the game is played over seven rounds and Josh had peaked just that bit too early and now found himself penniless and with no actions to perform. It was time to stop being so blinking bourgeoisie! All property is theft. The pack closed and overtook;

1st Nick: 62
2nd Alex*: 58
3rd Josh*: 42
4th Ash*: 40

A game massively ahead of its time but needing the BGG downloaded score board and bit holder as the board that comes with the game is frankly crap.

A whistle stop tour of 'Mage Wars' for Russell - I hope he likes it as I would like to see the player base for this grow.

An excellent, richly thematic duelling wizards game - the price keeps bouncing up and down at Amazon/Bookdepository but can often be had for £32 delivered, which is pretty good value for what comes in the box.

We just did a few moves this evening as a taster so no ratings.

In the absence of another 1 hour filler, with no pressure from me at all we decided to give this new title a spin. That's just the sort of crazy unpredictable kind of thing that happens around here.

It was all nip and tuck with Ash grabbing two income buildings, Alex getting two licences by game end and me one. I was hopeful of a win by bringing the game to an end by building nine holes bang up to the back door of the club house after splashing 3 Par 3's in one turn. However Alex had bumped his score for trees by developing a natural feature and doubled his resource score score with a specialist design whilst grabbing a valuable few extra points for distance to club house. He nicked it by 2.

1st Alex*:19
2nd Nick:17
3rd Josh*:12
4th Ash:7

With six players to find a game for we compromised with ATLANTIC STORM, a clever trick taking game themed around the WWII convoys and naval battles relating to them. Initial scepticism was soon replaced by enthusiasm. The game involves running 20 convoys as tricks with players choosing whether to join the German or Allied side during the round. To the victors the spoils. Roy won with 39VPs to Gareth's 35VPs, with the rest of us stragglers being left various distances behind.

Next stop will be PACIFIC TYPHOON.
