This is my 2nd year as an attendee of the Teton Con game convention in Jackson Wyoming. I'm using this geeklist as both an opportunity to tell you about the convention, and document the trip. I went with my wife:

The condos are pretty nice. They are decorated with a wildlife theme, clean, and well-kept. Upon your arrival, they are fully stocked with food, dishes, and any other kitchen items you might need. Both times I attended, every couple had their own bathroom, but I'm not sure how it works for families/single people.

The game room is open from around 9am to 2am (just an estimate), but the Teton Con staff pretty much allows people to play games for as long as they want.

The game library is pretty good, and the convention organizer (Mike):

takes requests for the library prior to the event. Yes- that means you can request games and he buys them. People bring their own games as well, so there really is a very good assortment of games to play.

The gaming portion of the con is almost all open gaming, but there is some special events as well (with prizes).

Prize ceremony in progress:

This year, the special events were:

Ticket to Ride World Tour
Pathfinder Speed Dungeon (1 hour)
Lego Dungeon
Netrunner Draft
Probably a few other things I missed?

All of the people at the convention are really friendly, and make great gaming partners. People tend to become close during the week, since everybody (at least the newcomers) do all of their guided tours together.

The convention seems to have a large number of people who returned for a 2nd trip, which is a very good sign for the longevity of Teton Con. Those of us who attended for a 2nd year in a row skipped out on the scheduled tours (discounts were available), and struck out on our own to explore the Tetons and Yellowstone.

Jackson is a pretty cool little tourist town. There is always a lot of people around, interesting restaurants and shops. The elk antler arches and moose taxidermy are all over the place, as are gift shops, thai restaurants and coffee shops.

If you want to book tours, there are multiple horseriding ranches, whitewater rafting, biking and adventure tour companies right in town.

The next group of entries is about specific games I played at the con. But before I talk about those, I would like to mention why Teton Con really has a lot to offer potential con-goers.

First, it has more than just gaming. It's perfect for families, or couples with (or without) non-gaming spouses. The options for outdoor recreation are pretty much unparalleled anywhere else in the country. You can game as little or as much as you want, and each person can tailor the event to suit their needs. We spent a bit more time outdoors this year, and a bit less in the gaming hall. I had fun both times (except for the uphill trail biking, I'm not in shape for that).

Second, its a *very* good deal for the price of the convention. You get a lot included with your ticket. The Teton Con staff are fantastic, are always available to help with any issues, or jump in on a game if you need another person.

Tram ride included with registration:

We played two games of Clash of Cultures- and I think my wife won both of them. All of the games were very close, and I was able to introduce the game to a bunch of new people. The second game was with another couple that returned to Teton Con for a second year (I forgot their names, sorry!), and the final scores were: 37.5, 37, 37, and 36.5.

I developed my taxation/trade route strategies in both of these games, and I think I'll be better able to pull it off successively next time.

I've never played in a Netrunner tournament, so this 6-player draft event was my first time. Three of the participants (Mike T. Matt, and Katie) had significantly more experience than the rest of us. Most of the cards were new to me, but I think I was still able to put together a couple of decent decks.

My corp deck focused on some fast advance events and Junebug (I had 3 copies). My runner deck had some good economy cards and was able to access multiple cards from HQ and R&D. I think it was the better of the two decks.

Game 1 against Craig: I kept drawing my agendas early and was unable to do anything until late in the game. By that time, Craig had played a lot of great programs and had a lot of money and was able to easily break through my ice.

Game 2 against Matt: Matt had the most experience, so I just assumed I was going to lose. However, I played extremely aggressively and was able to nab 4 agenda points within the first couple of turns. After that, Matt stabilized and played a ton of NEXT ice. Each piece of ice had 5 or 6 subroutines and I was pretty much shut-down from accessing remote servers. I adjusted my gameplay to focus on HQ, where I could access his hand if was willing to hit net damage subroutines every run. I grabbed the only agenda in his 5 card hand for the win. He also had a snare in his hand- so I lucked out here.

Game 3 vs. Brian: I felt bad about this game because I won on the first turn. Brian didn't play any ice in his HQ, and I played an event that let me run and access two additional HQ cards. I grabbed two 3 point agendas for the win.

We played a 2nd time for fun, and Brian won rather convincingly.

Game 4 vs. Katie: My Junebug strategy for corp was revealed early when Katie accessed one from R&D. She played extremely defensively, and kept running on R&D, but didn't hit anything. Late in the game I had 4 agendas in my hand, and two well-advanced junebugs that I was trying really hard to bait Katie into running on. She was blocked behind ice in my HQ, and couldn't access any of my agendas.

Eventually, she ran on one of the junebugs and it looked like I was going to win...except I screwed up. I'm not used to playing serious Netrunner and was a bit unfamiliar with the timing rules. I flipped over my Junebug without giving her the opportunity to jack-out, and I had to basically allow her to take back her run while simultaneously exposing my card. For some reason (I have no idea why), I thought that you could only jack out if ice was rezzed.

Eventually, I decked myself and Katie won the game. So- I went 2-2, but had a good shot at 3-1 if I actually knew what I was doing. Mike T. won by going 4-0. Overall, it was a really fun event. If I had more free time, I could see myself getting into tournaments.

Played with Kristi and two other guys whose names I don't recall. They hadn't played before, so I taught the game, and pointed out some few very important things about gameplay (importance of corn, etc.). I tried a starvation strategy with 6 workers and the resource technology. I ended up buying 3 monuments, but had lost so many points throughout the game from inability to feed my people that I only finished with 35 points or so. It was good enough for 2nd, but Kristi won with over 70 points.

Matt and Brian focused on canons and defeating galleons, and Kristi focused on resource sets. I did a bit of both, and that seemed to work out pretty well. Definitely a game I want to purchase.
