I just found out about an hour ago that my grandma died. It was a pretty big shock to me since she hadn't been sick and had been in good spirits recently. I can't sleep and I was thinking about all the times I had shared with her. I can remember every Friday night we would head over to her house and play games all weekend long. She was the first person to teach me how to shuffle a deck of cards and introduce me to games, especially card games. This is a list for her, the games that brought a smile to her face. Bye Grandma.

This was THE game that everyone had to know how to play. I was probably playing this one by the age of six and grandma always had to be my partner. Mostly because she never lost. This was my first game and grandma's favorite. We'd play to 5000 then play again and again and again and she'd never tire of it. I learned so much about her as we told stories and young and old were welcome to the table to play some matches. Great memories.

Another game that we would play often, generally if there were only a few family members around. Grandma would cackle wildly whenever she'd stick you with the Queen of Spades and gloat like crazy when she'd shoot the moon.

My grandma was all about blind bidding nil. And if you were her partner, oh man, you better not mess it up by grabbing a trick. We could go months without playing again but, when we did, she'd remind you and everyone else of the mistake you had made to ruin her bid. It was always in good fun though, and even more fun if you could beat her! Of course, she'd have the last word and ask why you couldn't play that good when you were her partner.

This one was a gift she had given me when I was nine or ten. We would play months of this at a sitting and would even come back to a game we had already played. We must have accumulated 50 years of Payday months in this game. This was really "our" game. People were welcome to play with us but, it was something really special when her and I would play.

We used to play this one a lot. I can still remember the creepy smiley face man. I think he was the Joker. I can't honestly say I remember much about the game, I just remember it was a staple on our gaming weekends.

Rummy Royal is what we called this one. Pretty much the game for our family and we would have what felt like dozens of people playing at once. Grandma would always find a way to get the most money. And yes, we'd play for real money. We'd all buy in for a couple dollars in pennies. That woman would make out like a bandit every weekend, I bet!
