July has started and the soccer world championship comes to an end.
(Gratz Netherlands, btw... Great job on sending England home )

Soccer is actually a pretty simple game: 22 guys try to kick a ball for 90 minutes and when it is all over the Germans have won

I guess, though, not everyone here watches soccer. Some of you are spending their time more wisely. You lot, go ahead and tell us:

Well I've been infected by the PnP virus, that's for sure. Next up for me is Eggs and Empires. I backed it for a $1 so I could get the PnP files for Sketch/Rough/B&W edition. Printed it out on different colored cardstock for each player deck. The eggs are on white cardstock for now. I'm cutting them out during my study breaks and sleeving them in some Ultra Pro sleeves that I bought in bulk from the Spring Sale at miniature market. I'm just going to make the stuff needed for a 4 player set up as I rather play other games when I have 6 around.

Here it is so far:

Personally I like the sketch art, not bad for a buck.

Putting a pnp of this together. Have finished all the chipboard work and am just waiting on the cards to arrive from PrinterStudio...REALLY looking forward to playing this one! The whole idea of building your tech tree as the main theme of the game is fascinating to me.

Some thoughts after playing it twice (2 player and 4 player):

Enjoyed the game much more playing it with 4 tonight, but AP is a potential issue...the game will really drag/overstay it's welcome if people take too long with their turns, and the turns do get longer as the game moves along and people get more actions. Players definitely also need to focus on getting additional actions as you need to keep up with everyone else action-wise or you won't have a chance to win.

I also really like playing with the Milestones expansion as it adds a different way to move up on the prestige tracks if your cards aren't helping you there.

The Personalities I'm relatively indifferent to as I'm not sure they really have much effect, but on the other hand they certainly don't hurt the game either

It can be really irksome when you need a certain technology for a prerequisite and you can't get it though

I'm also not sure that Age 4 is really needed for the game...it adds extra length to the game while not adding anything new to the game. I'm quite content sticking to Ages 1-3. Hopefully any further ages released as expansions will add something new to the game. It would be neat if where you are on the prestige tracks (military, political, and something else ) could give you some effects, but currently they're strictly for VPs.

Solid 7 to 7.5 for me I think after two plays.

Additional thoughts: After talking about the game with a friend, I think we both thinks the VPs are skewed too much in the prestige tracks and not enough towards the techs themselves. You won't win if you don't do well in the prestige tracks...seems in a tech tree game more points should be derived directly from the techs themselves. That or change the way the prestige tracks score...you might be one or two spaces behind the leader, but the difference in points add up quickly.

Another game that I've finished up all the chipboard work for and am just waiting for the cards to arrive from PrinterStudio...did decide to forego the food tiles/discs and just use plastic cubes...I think it'll be alot easier to use than chipboard discs, even if they aren't as attractive/thematic...I am using green and pink cubes though

Looking forward to giving this a play as well, and I'm curious to see if the junior high group will have any interest in this one as well.

Quick thoughts:

(1) The more the merrier!
(2) Don't get attached to your species!
(3) Don't play it with people who don't like games where you can attack other players!
(4) Do play with the quick play rules where everyone plays all their actions at the same time - I don't see a real reason to take turns doing their actions - provide shields/use an arm if you want to keep it hidden/private. It speeds the game up and keeps it in the timeframe this game belongs in.
(5) Definitely some luck of the draw with the cards, but you can usually find something good to do with them

Finished up all the chipboard work for this one and have the cards from the base game ready to order on PrinterStudio...still waiting for them to release the last set of cards for pnp backers before I place the order though.

I'm curious to see how this plays...after a readthrough of the rules, I have some reservations, but I am curious to give it a play and see how it goes.

Cards finished...just have to buy them now...and the order has been placed...now to wait for them to come in!

Printed and laminated all the board pieces (it's going to be a 9 piece boardyuk ) as well as the tiles and coins. Still need to mount them on chipboard.

Cards have been ordered from Printerstudio, although I did decide to scale the leader cards down to poker size...I don't really see a need to have them as large as originally designed...but we'll see.

Looks like an interesting take on area control, and it's another one I'm looking forward to playing.

Just got the last of the cards today...so my son and I gave it a whirl.

After three rounds of a two player game:
From gallery of garry_rice

A closer (albeit blurry) look at the different types of cards in the game:
From gallery of garry_rice

From gallery of garry_rice

INITIAL IMPRESSIONS: An area control game is certainly not ideal with just two players, but I appreciated Caleb's willingness to give it a try so dad could get a feel for the game and be better prepared to teach it at game nite sometime...and for that, the experience worked beautifully).

I enjoyed the interaction and the various card effects. I really liked choosing one's leader at the start of each generation and the choosing of the dynasty (action) cards as well. It certainly makes each round have a different feel as you need to change your focus depending on what leader you wind up choosing.

Some things I'm still uncertain about: the variable coins (0, 1, or 2 vps) for controlling a province in both military and political influence...it might be better to just award 1 point for doing so...but no big deal either way. The events deck certainly adds thematic feel to the game, but I can see how someone who doesn't care for random effects might be ticked off playing with them. I think I like them...but then it hasn't hurt me badly yet either)

I need to see how this plays with more players before giving it a real rating/evaluation, but I enjoyed the game tonight.

Board Game: Shadow of the Elder Gods
I've just finished building this game - I've tried to get to grips with the rules, which are quite a bit vague! devil I've laminated both boards with A5 sheets and cards with 5.4 cms x 8.6 cms sheets. There were some transparent plastic stands left over from previous PnP, so I've used them for the characters and tokens were glued to basic cardboard boxes. Everything fits in a double-deck playing card container, cards on one side, tidbits on the other. The two boards don't fit, so they've been tagged at the back with the name of the game and I keep them together with a rubber band.

I quickly slapped together this copy of Welcome to the Dungeon at work yesterday. It's such a simple build that there was really no reason to get a computer involved, so all of the cards are drawn by hand.

I played it once with three players so far. It really is a great game. I will have to make a better, more durable copy soon enough.

It's well worth your time to make this one.

61. Board Game: Quest for the Open Tavern [Average Rating:7.47 Unranked]
Board Game: Quest for the Open Tavern
The good news is that Quest for the Open Tavern won the BGG 2-player game design contest! However, there is still tons of play testing to be done. I started looking for blind playtest groups a couple months ago.

Last month I moved from the US to the UK, which slowed the playtest down a bit, but I just sent out another set of playtest packs, and I've just finished collecting data for the last round.

The playtest components are from Printerstudio (the cards) and Print and Play Productions (counters and cubes). I'm using a $1 crayon box from Wal-Mart to hold the games. I'll be assembling twelve sets of these high quality prototypes to send out to playtesters this month.

Seeking Blind Playtesters and Feedback/Reviews

By David Thompson (with PnP development by Keith Swingruber and art by Michael Parla)

Inspired by E. Nate Kurth

Number of Players: 2

Estimated Playtime: 15 minutes

Summary
In Quest for the Open Tavern, players engage in a competitive blind bid character placement game that embraces DIRECT player interaction. This ain’t your dad’s Euro! One player takes the role of the “Wayfarers of Devastation” — a party of Adventurers that recently slew a Great Red Wyrm (or so they claim) and want to celebrate with random acts of drunkenness and senseless vandalism. But they’ve come to the wrong town! The other player takes the role of Governor Xaggy of Hommlette — he's heard about this band of ne’er-dowells and he’s ready for them — he will stop at nothing to keep the town safe. Complicating the issue is the land is under siege from Zombies, Demons, Drunken Wizards, and a well organized Thieves’ Guild, any of which can force the Wayfarers and Governor Xaggy to become uneasy allies.

62. Board Game: Allegiance [Average Rating:6.33 Unranked]
Board Game: Allegiance
I've been working on Allegiance since November 2013. After months of work, it's nearing the end of its development.

When I moved from the US to the UK, I had the awesome fortune of joining a board game designer meetup group. The reaction from the group concerning Allegiance has been positive.

There are tons of copies of Allegiance roaming around, but I plan on making one last batch, primarily for reviewers.

From gallery of Skirmish_Tactics

3-6 players | Ages: 13+ | 25 minutes

Loyalty | Deduction | Deception | Betrayal

You are a priest of a troubled Temple. A Thieves’ Guild has emerged and is challenging your Temple for influence over the land. You must decide whether to work along with your brethren in the fight against the Thieves Guild or betray your brothers and guide the Thieves’ Guild to prominence.

In Allegiance, players use cards to adjust the influence of the Thieves’ Guild and Temple. At the end of the game, the organization with the most influence emerges to prominence. Players begin with an allegiance to the Temple. However, that allegiance can shift during the game as players accrue points that align them with either the Temple or the Thieves’ Guild. All players with allegiance to the Temple win if the Temple has the most influence. One player with allegiance to the Thieves’ Guild wins if the Thieves’ Guild has the most influence.

Will the players maintain allegiance with the Temple and work cooperatively to try to achieve victory? Or will one or more of them turn rogue and align with the Thieves’ Guild in a high-risk, high-reward attempt to win it all?

Components Required to Play

- Rules, 2 pages
- 96 cards (possibly increased to 114 for six players in version 4)

High Resolution Downloads
You can download the PnP components from the BGG entry for the game, or get the high resolution files from the game's website. (BGG limits the file sizes that can be uploaded to the files section of game entries).

Second order from Printer's Studio arrived yesterday with two more decks. First up: Dominion: Prosperity. Leaving out the 4 cards that require bits still didn't leave quite enough room for everything. 2 new basic card types and 20 Kingdom cards is a very nice addition.

And oh yes, there was an extra card from the next deck, and one of the Colonies from this deck appeared in the next. This is the first oddity I've experienced with Printer's Studio, but thankfully it all worked out.

Dominion: Cornucopia and Extras is the last deck I was able to put together before the awesome coupon expired earlier this month. This deck has all the Cornucopia cards, plus 3 Kingdom cards from Intrigue, one from Prosperity, yet one more Copper card, and 4 more kingdom cards to preview Hinterlands if I decide to do that one.

There is a free PnP in the files section - but for $8, one can back the KS and get the premium art PnP (pictured below) - you can also back and get the full game other levels, of course.

My 2 sons and I have played the heck out of the free PnP for this awesome co-op for the last couple of weeks. We will be backing it on KS - but if your interested in backing it, there only 2 days left.

It's a real nice deck-building co-op with some really nifty mechanics...and nice artwork too!

Not that bad of a worker placement game, if you're into that kind of thing.
If interested I podcasted about this one here:

This game that's been on my workbench for months is still not at 100%, but I'm calling it "done enough."

I have a baby on the way and need to make room for other projects
(I'm sure I'll be able to squeeze some smaller stuff in, but no more of these "epic" projects for a while).

This is a bear of a project, though that's mostly because of my decision to use wood for the pieces.
I enjoy woodworking, but this project has taught me that I *hate* working with dozens of tiny bits.

I got the cards from PrinterStudio a while back but being away from home for a few months means my crafting tools are limited. I can't wait any longer though. Even if it's just label paper on a cereal box, I will craft this game!

If I don't return, assume I'm still busy subverting the occupation. ninja

Inspired by other redesigns here on BGG I produced my own copy of Machi Koro, sized for my card cutter. The design took a few days but the printing was done at work and only cost about £5 and the cards the took a whole 5 minutes to cut! This toy is fantastic!

We weren't sure if this game was good for us but we played it this week at our games night and were impressed enough that after a few design tweaks to suit our style of play, I will be ordering a set from Printer Studio.

I made a copy of the expansion at the same time as the base game, including the cards for 5 player play (our group is normally 5 people). Not played it yet, but based on our experience of the base game I'm looking forward to it.

First off, before I throw the 4 games I made this month up here, I want to say you guys are jerks for infecting me with the PnP bug zombie. It also doesn't help that my wife does scrapbooking and quilting so we have all of the right tools to make PnP games already...

Waggle Dance was pretty easy to make (compared to the other games I made this month). Cards are 2 lays of card stock spray-glued together. The hexes and blocking counters are cut from mat board (picture frame backing). The egg pieces were cut on my table saw from a 3/4" dowel; I don't think I'm going to worry about painting them since the natural wood color works quite well for this.

The box I put Waggle Dance in is a re-purposed box for Smash Up: Awesome Level 9000.

For dice, I've got one Chessex set and my mother-in-law's Tenzi set has provided the rest of the dice. We haven't yet run into needing more than 10 dice per player yet, but our second play used a lot more dice than our first play.

As for the game itself, lots of fun! It's mechanics are intuitive enough to make teaching easy, but the amount of depth scales well with the players' experience with the game.

Thank you Grublin!
