--------------

And now, the only reason you've bothered to keep reading the header this far down... the monthly GeekGold challenge!

It's time dig deep into the darkest corners of BGG for a SGOYT SCAVENGER HUNT!

Wait, what?

This month's challenge is completely different from any you've seen before. You don't need to post detailed reports of your plays, you don't need to create mini reviews, you don't need to dig out a game you haven't played in years (or ever), you don't need to invent new solo rules for a game that doesn't have any... heck, you don't even need to actually play any game at all! Anyone reading and commenting on this list can take part.

Here's how it will work. Periodically* throughout the month I'll post a requested item, and your challenge will be to find it. Each unique picture of the requested item wins some GeekGold. bagbacon
*Maybe every few days, maybe every few pages, maybe every time someone posts High Frontier... who knows? It'll be completely arbitrary, so keep an eye on your subscriptions!

For example, if the item you had to find was a picture of a cat sticking out its tongue, you might post this picture:

Simple, right? You're going to clean out every last GG penny I've got! Well, not so fast! To keep it from being too easy there are a few rules you'll have to follow:

1) ALL pictures must come from within the BGG/RPGG/VGG database.
Game pages, designer pages, and even personal galleries are fair game unless noted otherwise. Pictures posted from external sources will not count.
2) All pictures must have been uploaded prior to my entry requesting the item.
In other words, you can't see what the item is and then cheat by taking a new picture of it.
3) All pictures and items must be unique.
No credit is given for repeating what someone else has already posted, even if it's a different photo. In other words, once someone has posted a picture of a specific piece from a game, that game piece cannot be posted by anyone else even if the pictures are completely different. See rule #6.
4) One successful picture per user per requested item, please.
Let's allow as many people as possible to participate, so if you happen upon a jackpot of images for something, just pick one and let others find the rest. You'll have plenty of other chances to take my GG throughout the month. If you post a picture that gets rejected for any reason, you can keep trying until you get one that works.
5) Some items may include additional rules, so double-check them before posting.
6) Whether or not a posted item qualifies is entirely up to my discretion.
If I say something doesn't count don't get upset and don't argue it. Just go out and find a better picture.
7) Pictures should be posted as a reply to the specific Scavenger Hunt entry.
It's the only way I'll be able to keep track of who and what has posted where.

(Edits/Additions/Clarifications to the Scavenger Hunt rules are in red.)

Some items will be easy, some will take some serious digging, and some might even take a bit of luck. Some may even be worth bonus points if you happen to find a specific picture. Good luck!

Quick links to the items:
SGOYT SCAVENGER HUNT - ITEM #1 - A picture of a game piece that is worth exactly 10 points.
SGOYT SCAVENGER HUNT - ITEM #2 - The cast of Firefly/Serenity.
SGOYT SCAVENGER HUNT - ITEM #3 - A useless game piece.
SGOYT SCAVENGER HUNT - ITEM #4 - Wil Wheaton
SGOYT SCAVENGER HUNT - ITEM #5 - A weapon that's normally not considered a weapon.
SGOYT SCAVENGER HUNT - ITEM #6 - The avatars of SGOYT people!

SGOYT SCAVENGER HUNT - ITEM #1

Find...
A picture of a game piece that is worth exactly 10 points.

Extra Rules & Notes (check the header above for the main rules):

1.1) It must be exactly 10 points. No more, no less.

1.2) Points are points.
It doesn't matter if the game refers to them as Victory points, Glory points, Achievement points, or some other arbitrary term. If you add them up at the end of a game to determine who won, they're points.

1.3) It must be a single game piece, not several that are collectively worth 10 points.
Having a bunch of other stuff in the picture is perfectly fine, but at least one of the game pieces visible must be worth 10 points.

1.4) Game currency doesn't count, even if it does directly equal points in a game.
Lots of games do this, but I want to see more than just picture after picture of 10-value coins. Other non-currency items from the same game are fine, if they're worth 10 points as shown.

1.5) IMPORTANT! Tell us what makes the item worth 10 points.
Not everyone has played every game and I fully expect some really obscure stuff to get dug up, so please give a brief explanation of the scoring in the game, especially if factors that aren't clearly visible in the picture affect its value.

This is all set up and about to be played, but first a story.

I love this game. Its merits (and shortcomings) have been well chronicled here.

When I saw that the Geek Store had the promo cards, I grabbed them. More Freedom means more awesome.

Tonight, I decided to start July with a game using the new cards. I set it all up and drew my first hand of abolitionist cards.

...

That's odd. Why are there two of the same card?

Wait...

There are TWO sets of matching cards in the row. What the heck is going on?

I check the manual for components and start doing some math. There should have been 52 cards in the box before I added the promos. Now there are 80ish

To make a long story short. I didn't realize that my preordered copy already had these promos.

So... anyone want a set of Freedom promo cards?

*Edited for NUMEROUS typos. And some probably remain.

7-1-14: Session complete and oh MAN, I almost had it. I played as the Stockholder whose "purchase a token after taking a fund raising action" power is SUPER handy for gaining support.

I was a mere one free slave shy from the 5 needed with plenty awaiting passage in northern cities. I had only the last support token left with 10 cash left in hand to grab it the following turn. I entered the lantern phase ready to soak up my victory.

And drew this:

Curses George you bigoted old fool.

I couldn't recover. The plantations filled. Tragedy befalls the South yet again.

Solo Fanatic/Tachyon/Tempest vs. Omnitron in Megalopolis. CRUSHED OMNITRON!

A very exciting game. Fanatic dealt staggering damage to Omnitron and was useful even after she died, with her inspirational power allowing Tempest to get rid of an EPE (which would have killed us in the next round, even though we destroyed Omni). Tempest was fun to play and a reliable steady attacker. Tachyon did the least this game, due to a decided scarcity of Burst cards.

As I thought, Megalopolis is a fairly neutral environment to fight in. A handy Plummeting Monorail also helped in Omnitron's defeat, as did the police backup.

Very exciting to beat him. Now to try a different villain. I think I will try the same team again, maybe against Citizen Dawn.

So I set up Crow Bait tonight. It's the second scenario in the Skinshaw Murders adventure pack. I sat down and started playing. About 5 or six turns into the game, I realized I had forgotten to shuffle in the Villain and Henchmen! I couldn't believe I made such a dumb mistake. Well, at that point, I thought it was too late to stick them in, so I took apart everything, shuffled all the cards back into the box, then rebuilt the scenario. By that time, I didn't want to play anymore. I left it set up waiting for me tomorrow. Geeesh!

I'm going old school with a classic solitaire-game by Mark Herman, the greatest game designer of them all. What is even more cool than the game is that he sent me a copy (tough to find, long out of print, costs some $$$).

The concept is really cool: You play one side. If you do too well, you have to take over the other side. If you take too long to win, the board wins, but since you are often unable to deliver the knockout punch to yourself, you experience the Greek tragedy.

Ubber-cool.

I'm a little late to the game, I know. Everyone else has probably moved on to something else, But I've just been wearing this game out these last weeks. I just love it's simplicity!

I'm working on a solo scenario that's been brewing in the cranial lab; Assassins of Marillion - (paying homage to a favorite UK band) and the assassins are using one of your allied factions to infiltrate your forces and your strategy. ninja this scenario has a mid-game scenario card change for when the puppet faction is revealed - then new game conditions enter, and it's all about damage control! Very tense play so far.

I just bought this beautiful game this last week. Not played full scenario as yet just tinkering and learning the rules. Really very, very excited to try it out.

This last week I have also played Cruel Necessity, which was as good as ever. Really recommend this game to anyone who is interested in this period of history and wants a tough challenge. The political tracks are a real pain at times, but so important to winning.

Another enjoyable evening was spent with Arkham Horror with both Dunwich Horror and Innsmouth expansions. Easily one of my top two games along with Mage Knight. I love the sprawl upon the table and the chaos that ensues - makes my brain hurt at times, but oh so worth it.

My final solo experience this last week or two has been learning the Edge of the Empire RPG core rules for a first adventure with friends this Friday. I think learning the adventures and rules is almost more fun than GM'ing - and relaxing to boot.

Hello!

Well, while running out of time, I played a quick session of Eldritch Horror. It turned out to be a quick and painful session. I already knew things were looking grim when Yeb was the starting mystery (while epic monsters are rather weak in single investigator solitaire, its two buddies still meant that it might be trouble).

Having picked Diana Stanley as my investigator, I decided to first bolster my equipment in Panama and then move to Rome in the next round in hope of getting a Will Boost. Things worked out only medium well. I was able to get quite some equipment and the conspiracy theorist ally, but I failed to get that will boost while more gates and monsters were starting to spawn. Moving east, Diana fell prey to despair in Bombay.

Time for Lola Hayes to enter the stage. Besides the gates and monsters, there were also two rumors ticking away, although oddly enough, they proved to be not so big a problem. After preparing a little bit (and sending the Agency Quarantine to destroy Yeb ), Lola Hayes was able to trace Diana's tracks in Bombay and gather the information and equipment she had gained (quite some loot).

Unfortunately, just then deep ones decided to attack Bombay, and Lola succumbed to their attack having been wounded by other Mythos effects earlier.

This became a borderline case as Shubb-Nigurath woke in the Mythos phase of that turn. Going strictly by the wording of the rules, I decided to still pick a new investigator as the ancient one had not yet woken when the investigator was defeated. Not that it mattered anyway - only one mystery solved, there was little hope for me.

So, Lily Chen joined the last desperate stand. She travelled to Bombay and met Lola Hayes, but in the end, the next Mythos phase spawned the monster Shubb-Nigurath needed to destroy humanity.

...

It had quite a few fun moments, but I have to admit that I had sensed that this was going to end badly right from seeing Yeb (who turned out to be not such a big problem, after all, though (^_^;; ).

Yours,
Deathworks

This one is all set up, rules read....I even cheated and took the first action of the first turn last night. (Rome started a siege on the Volgi). Looks like something I am going to enjoy. Asymmetrical sides, card play; from first impressions it is almost a COIN game, before here was COIN games.

Looking forward to seeing how she goes.

This is one I have been wanting to play for a very long time. I'm more fascinated by helicopters than I am jets. I've played Hornet Leader 10 times and before now, that was the only Leader game I have played. A friend of mine constantly recommended Thunderbolt Apache Leader too me and said I would like it more.
Well, I really did enjoy it. There seems to be a lot more going on and feels a lot more involved than Hornet Leader... or maybe it's due to lack of familiarity. I did struggle with some things but found my answers easily and got back on track. As far as liking it more than Hornet Leader, I'm actually not sure. I don't know if I like it less either. They both are fun at about the same level for me. I do feel like though this is a game I'd have to sit down and really learn through multiple plays. Not sure if that's going to happen anytime soon, but I do look forward to when it does.

This was my 51st play against the hydra! For months I've been mentioning my green elves deck which consistently lost against the hydra. Earlier in the week it won, and tonight I won on normal setting (start with 3 heads) in a truly epic battle. At one point there were 8 heads on the table, but by the end there were 13 elves. I was killing 5 heads a round, and 5 more would come back!

This means it's time to release the deck:

http://deckbox.org/sets/689442

Sure, it's not an amazing deck, but it does the job under the constraints I imposed on it. And it has bucketloads of elves.

I'm playing through the campaign game for the first time. I actually played through the Spanish and Mexican periods in June at the weekend but the American period denouement will be tonight and tomorrow.

I managed to survive the Spanish period in reasonable shape - a few scares but manageable - mainly because the big Spanish raids spent most of the period in the Standby column.

I got incredibly lucky in the Mexican period with two early failed raids, in one of which I won an important battle, leaving Mexican morale very low. When the event card turned up that removed a red cube from the Subjugation box I had enough sheep to take a few of Passage of Time actions to reduce their Morale to 0. With only one Rancho on the board I easily rolled the Automatic Victory - all of this after only only one Historical card! Never got this lucky in the Mexican campaign!

That puts me in a reasonable position at the opening of the American period. Can't wait to find out how it plays out!

Got the counters clipped and the game partially set up. The game box lists the players as 1-2 and I read the (very short) solitaire rules last night. Normally, I will play CDGs solo just to the best of my ability but for this game I'll give the little solo rules a shot.

Basically, the solitaire rules tell you to deal a hand of cards to each player but keep them face down. Each turn you turn two cards face up and choose one to play. The next turn you turn one new card face up, so you always only have two visible. I'm curious to see how this works. If it's a good method, I may try implementing it in some of my other games.

As my credit card is being charged today for Fire in the Lake I am preparing by going through my COIN game collection and playing each one.

Currently on the table is Cuba Libre.

This is a game that I had the privilege to help playtest at a few local cons with the designer. Some of my friends are the example players used in the playbook walkthrough of the game. I am going through the rules one more time and I am going to run one game through without the bots, playing each side, and then I am going to play a few more games with the bots, trying out the Government and then July 26.

Next up will be another run through of Andean Abyss.

With this one I am just going to play one quick solo game with the government. I like the game but I am not a real fan of the bots in this one. Volko has stated that the bots have been getting better and better with each new game. I wonder if he would consider going back and update the bots in the existing games with the lessons he has learned over the past three games in the series?

After that will be A Distant Plain.

I have not played this one yet, even though I received it on P500 along with Cuba Libre. I am most looking forward to this. For this I plan on doing the tutorial and then running that game to the end just playing each side. Then I will play a few games with the bots.

They are projecting on having Fire in the Lake out by the end of the month, so that one might make it into this month as well!

I picked this up a few weeks back, played it once and have been itching to get it back to the table. Good news, I found some solo rules! Bad news, while the rules seem solid enough I just didn't feel like I was particularly invested in the game. Maybe I was expecting more, so I think I'll shelve playing this solo for a while and knock the dust off some of my old MtG decks and test them against my newest purchases - Magic: The Gathering Challenge Deck – Battle the Horde and Magic: The Gathering Challenge Deck – Defeat a God decks (gotta thank this Guild for these entering my collection).

I purchased DR yesterday at a B&N just for the solo play. After watching a few solo reviews, I thought it may have some legs.
I did my first delve last night and came out with 15 points. According to the rulebook that means I'm Dragon Fodder. cry

However, I will say that the game has been in the back of my head today and I can't wait to get it back on the table tonight. The rules show achievements at upward of 35+ points! This sounds impossible but also adds to the challenge and ultimate replay ability.

A few points of interest: Components are fantastic. Dice are top notch. Counters are good and thick. Even the player cards are nice.
My only concern is the game comes in a treasure chest. Clever, but I'm worried that after many games of opening and closing this cardboard box it could be bad news bears for the chest holding up for the long haul. We'll see.
For $15-$20 not a bad solo investment at all.
As of now, I recommend to anyone needing a good, quick dungeon delve that only takes about 15 minutes.

In the design process:

Vikings: most of the mechanics have been put into place. I am looking for more of a hook to the play.

Guild Hall expansion (Job Faire): Done for the most part. Did not require much alteration in the ideas with the base game. More playtesting needed for validation.

Pret a Porter: When I watched the rahdo run through I thought, "that looks like a good solo game". I received a copy a little over a week ago and it came together fairly quickly. This is a very deep experience. Still much more to do but all of the ideas that I visualized seem to be holding up for the most part.

There are many others in some form of the design process but these are the current active ones.

Those that I am also playing:

Glass Road with a slight variation to make it a bit more interesting. I like competition.

Ascension I play with all sets and promos mixed. It is OK but just a fancy timer that feels like I am playing the game. The luck factor of the cards can make things too easy/hard which is an issue but at 10 minutes a pop I can't complain too much.

I'll start off this month where I left off last. Jenny (still) needs help!

I played with the Explorer last and he couldn't help Jenny so this time around I'll give the Cook a go since he might help solve the feeding problems and get Jenny nursed back to health enough to make it off the island.

It looks like getting the furs will to pose the biggest problem. I need to explore to fill up the hunting deck, need weapons to not totally get my butt kicked but also need to spend actions gathering the other resources needed to build the escape boat and making sure we are sheltered properly (points for roof, palisade to avoid damage). Seems like a bit much for playing solo, maybe this scenario is best left to multiple players. *I see now that the 4th totem icon gives you 2 fur so that certainly improves your chances. I haven't actually ever killed Friday yet either but I think he may have to be sacrificed in order to gamble a little on favorable outcomes and simply to try and get more done. We'll see.

While I have it out I may also brave on to the next scenario I haven't tried.

I retrieved Jenny on the raft in turn 4, I also managed to get bonus food source by building the snare. Just a few more turns to go and I still need wood and furs, hoping to only need to hunt once so I'm going to concentrate on exploring just one or two more times to find that balloon. Hopefully everyone can stay alive, wood has been tough to get due to some production affecting events so building up shelter has been a secondary consideration - and there's been some pain (weather tokens! ack!). Resources on other tiles have dried up due to events as well - not sure the odds on getting that many in one short scenario but I've lost 4 resource options on 4 different tiles already. On turn 6 I got no production but then it rained resources, I killed a gorilla (that hurt), found some food, found the balloon and a cave with fur in it - I ended up with 7 food and 6 fur but no wood and Friday died exploring a tile it turned out I didn't need to go into afterall. On turn 7 I only needed to come up with 3 wood minimum, production gave me one and I gathered on the nearest two tiles. I was all set, as long as we didn't get too hurt on the next turn production would give me the final piece of wood. I drew the fire event - no wood this production phase.

cryshakelaugh Game over, everything was so devastated that I only managed 9 points.

Love this game.

I tried Volcano Island for the first time, this one plays fast and definitely feels frantic! I did not win but finished with 24 points (and almost died due to terrible weather events). I screwed up on my first totem because I misunderstood and thought I needed the rope ladder to explore them but after it was buried by lava I realized that was just there for a bonus worker for that action. I had -1 worker markers on every action due to events and so I missed my roll on the 3rd totem thus only completing two of the three. I was using the carpenter so he helped me get the boat built at the end due to ash and -1 worker for the build action. Very fun and different kind of scenario than the others, I'll have to give this one a few tries before moving on to the next one. Will try the explorer next.

Tried my third game (2nd on VI) with the Explorer, he helped a little bit with tile selection until I was robbed of all my determination tokens and never recovered. That started a downward spiral which ended with death in round 7 as I was exploring totem 4. I had stayed ahead of the lave flows but the game threw a lot of hazard at me from about mid-game on. It was fun and I was sooooo close... so close. That makes 10 plays for this game now too so 3 of my 10x10s are done (I really need to post that in the GL)!

I took a few PnP games on vacation with me this week. Decided to break this one out while sitting in the beach.

Also, I wanted to try out the game on "Easy Mode" as proposed by Jack:

pusherman42 wrote:
Ok, ok, ok. I haven't given these numbers out, but try this, ya pansies:

Change the 12 Invasion roll numbers to:

blank, blank, blank, 15, 14, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 2

Instead of rolling 1d8, roll 2 and sum. That's the only change. Should be slightly easier, and with less chance of really unfun 8's early on.

Here's how it went...

Invasion 1
I began as I normally do by Enciphering, Recruiting, and Decoding. Just as I had decoded all of the enemy's info, they broke through my defenses (turn 7) and invaded. Since I didn't have time to Break their codes, I put all forces into my Critical Structures hoping the next round would be better.

Invasion 2
Again, I stuck with usual trifecta of actions hoping for better results. This time, I did Break the enemy's codes, destroying 5 infantry and 5 artillery in the process. I had decided to Deploy my units on turn 9. Critical Structures remained safe.

Invasion 3
I Enciphered once this round with mixed results. I ended up with four 4s at this point - not too thrilled with that; really wanted some variety from my code breakers. Anyway, turn 7 again saw the enemy break through and instigate the invasion. However, I did have just enough time to Break their codes. We destroyed 1 infantry, 1 artillery, and 5 paratroopers. Unfortunately, I lost a Bridge during battle even though I stopped the enemy bomber en route to it - I will have two less turns next round.

Invasion 4
And things begin to fall apart. With two less turns, I quickly go into Decipher mode hoping to gather some quick intel. On turn 5, though (which is my turn 3), the enemy beats me to the punch. The invasion begins, and I am completely unprepared. No enemy units are destroyed, and I lose a Factory (and 7 troops next round).

Invasion 5
I Encipher first to build up my code defenses, but I end up with four 5s this time. Ugh! I need to find some new Encipher-ers. Anyway, code breaking is more successful this time. We destroy 7 armor and 1 artillery. But even though I chose to Deploy this round (turn 9), the enemy destroys both Critical Structures. Gah! I will be short 7 troops and have two less turns on the final round.

Invasion 6
I need troops!! I spend the first five turns Recruiting help in battle. Finally, I give one turn of Deciphering a go to see if I could find out where the enemy bomber would attack. We completely fail on the Break attempt. Grr. However, I am able to complete every turn this round (minus the two I had lost, of course) for the first time ever. I send a bunch of troops to the Capital for defense, and we stop any damage to my two remaining Critical Structures.

Let the final battle begin!

Final Invasion
Currently, we have destroyed 6 infantry, 7 armor, 7 artillery, and 5 paratroopers. Two of my fighters remain, three rows of troops stand tall at the Capital, and I have three open lines of codes to use.

We take out the remainder of the enemy infantry with troops and a fighter. The armor goes down using all three - troops, fighter, and code. The artillery is blown to bits with my final line of troops and another set of codes. Nine enemy paratroopers are on their way. I only have one code left to fight with.

One more paratrooper is gone as the rest invade my Capital.

The enemy is victorious.

Still going through my Item for Geeklist "2014 Challenge: Play 10 Games 10 Times Each" , slowly but surely.

I'm still up in the air with this game. Rommel is the sticking point. You need a 5 or 6 to push him back, but every time he goes backwards you get a -1DRM (abstract representation of logistics and lengthening Brit supply lines). The mechanic makes sense, but it makes it even hard to push him back. You can try for a RAID action, but you need a 5 or 6 just to get a +1DRM for the Rommel roll, why not just roll vs Rommel directly? Anyhow, I can deal with the Italians, the Luftwaffe and the U-Boats. I can rarely deal with Rommel. Lost with over 10 cards left in the deck (including 2 different Rommel advances x2 space cards).

List of all my plays of Malta Besieged for July

I'm quite enjoying this solitaire. Although the AI is just a random dice roll the player decisions and the interesting cards keep my attention for the 90 minutes or so this is taking me (I'm still not 100% confident with the rules, so it's a little slow going).1

I got a one point revolution win on the last topple card.

I have a pretty large collection of this thanks to a member of our group who sold it to me at a price I coulsn't turn down. It's been rather neglected though as I never really got into it so I'm spending a little time messing with some deck suggestions and trying it out again.
