A return to one of the past homes of ConVic with a 14 hour friendly game-a-thon in Altona Meadows in the western suburbs of Melbourne.

Yep, I can confirm we're on for Saturday 2 August 2014, 10am - midnight, at the spacious, bright Laverton Bowls Club.

Some friendly gaming, a couple of competitions, possibly a kick around with the Subbuteo soccer ball in memory of the World Cup and a bit of trading and selling of games.

I've listed the highlights of the one day mini-Con below and will add anything new that is suggested or comes along.

Hope to see you Westies and Melburnians there in what possibly could become the premiere western suburbs gaming con!

Date: Saturday 2 August 2014
From: 10 am - midnight
Location: Laverton Bowls Club, Hall Avenue, Altona Meadows
Cost: $5 (U14 kids free)

Take the Newlands Road exit from the Princes Freeway coming from the city of the High Stree exit from Werribee/Geelong.

By train: 10 min walk from Laverton station on the Werribee line.

With only four weeks notice, I felt it better to have Gaming in the Meadows as a one day mini-Con with a look at a full weekend next year. But I can promise 14 straight hours of gaming goodness!

The Laverton Lawn Bowls club rooms is bright, spacious and tidy. Plenty of off street parking available.

Drinks: We have a open bar (no BYO) with reasonably priced drinks available throughout the night. Tea and coffee will be available.

Food: Snacks available, but we also have the five basic food groups (KFC, McDonald's, Subway, Hungry Jacks, Red Rooster) a couple of minutes drive away. There's also a dozen other options, with many offering delivery. I'll have menus available on the day.

I did a quick survey to see what gamers wanted from the day. And it was largely friendly, open gaming.

Like ConVic and other small cons before it, the emphasise will be on board games. Funny that. Euros, AT, wargames, party games, etc.

There was some interest in small tournaments, so I've organised a couple. See below for details.

I'm hoping to see if there's enough interest on the day to warrant a two/three day convention in 2015 - probably on the last weekend of August.

This will be a kid friendly gaming day, but please keep them under control. There is a park next door and a couple of sporting ovals that should be emtpy too. Kids can also play on the (disused) artificial lawn bowls rink but the grass is strictly off limits.

Mini Tournament - 10.00am - 12.30am. Semi-final and Final 1pm

For those arriving in the morning we'll have a mini-tournament to start us off. What better way to enjoy a winter's morning than eating brains? 4 players per round, winner heads straight into the final (or semil final if we have more players). Prize for the winner.

Note: A match only takes around 10 minutes! So this won't be time intensive for anyone who wants to join in.

Mini Tournament - throughout the day, final around 7pm

We're at lawn bowls club, but the greens are closed. However we can still show our skills with the disc in a knock out Crokinole tournie. Best of three sets (six discs each set) 1 v 1 knock out Wimbledon style.

I'll be asking for participants in the morning (or you can you book your spot below) and will draw up a schedule on the day. Each game can be played on an ad-hoc basis. We should have two crokinole boards on hand - I have my beautiful Gordons board ready and shined up to go!

Prize for the winning player.

There has been a number of suggestions for a maths trade/flea market/silent auction.

I thought we could try something new - based on a stock market game I made years ago.

A very fast and loud 15-20 minute trade and sell we'll call "Masters of Trade" and we'll kick it off around 5.00pm.

Basically, bring your games you want to sell and trade. All games will be placed on a half dozen tables (set into a square) 10 mins prior to the start of the trade/sell period. These can be quickly examined before each trader stands with their games (if they have any) and the trading period starts. It's up to you to haggle, offer a trade or sell during this period. We'll have stickers to place on sold games so you can organise payment after the trade period. It should be fast and furious and fun.

I'll expand on this more, but the aim is similar to the maths trade - only a lot quicker. Sure, you may not want to sell your mint Through the Ages like this, but it will work for games you're happy to quicky sell or trade.

Exhibition (all day) and tournament 5.00 - 8.30pm

Subbuteo is a really fun game of football flicking. I play with the Melbourne Subbuteo Club and I'm hoping to have a couple of tables set up to show the game off. There's even a chance of a mini-tournament on the day if I can get some of the club members to slip on the boots and come down.

Konrad Soper volunteered to run a few games of PitchCar. Now we just need a set! I can get the original PitchCar but not the newer Pitchcar. If anyone has a set, please bring it along.
