Another highly enjoyable playing of Mage Wars using Steve's brand new and shiny copy of the game. My Necromancer (slightly customised) v Steve's (out of the book) Beastmaster.

Steve placed an early lair and started spawning creatures faster than I could grow my undead horde, and his 'Tree of Life' somewhat negated my 'Idol of Pestilance' which had caused him so much trouble last time. One of my Deathfangs got a little over eager and charged into Steve's main defence square and was destroyed but not before it had inflicted some damage, which was now not being regenerated due to a 'Deathlock' conjuration stopping any regeneration and healing from happening.

The Idol and Deathlock now became targets for Steve's many creatures which took some of the pressure off my skeletons and they started coming in range of my archers as did his Mage - a little unwise given his lack of armour. I ignored Steve's creatures and piled onto the Mage who was soon running for cover - but too late....a final charge and Fireball by my own Mage blitzed him.

Gordon winner
Steve defeated ?

Kev, Martin and Graham were setting up for a game of Tzolk'in when I arrived so I quickly joined them. Graham, Martin and I had all played before but it was new to Kev and we were a bit unsure of explaining the rules. So thank you Gordon for stepping in.

Kev tried a bit of everything but bought a number of buildings that allowed him to feed his workers and went for the temple that gives you bonuses for them. Martin seemed to come into the game with a plan and did get two temples but also got caught out twice when the new start player took the double move on the wheel. Graham seemed to decide on a skull strategy early but due to a bit of interference from Kev couldn't quite develop it and wasn't able to get all the moves he needed on the gods track.

This was good for me as I had decided to focus on the gods track with the aim of getting the appropriate temple. I neglected to get a fourth worker early on, and due to Kev's habit of grabbing start player, got bounced back to fourth player at a couple of key points. So I didn't get temple I wanted, but through luck, opportunism - and grabbing start player on the penultimate turn, turning the wheel twice and ruining Martin, Kev and Graham's last turn, was able to score well on the God track for a second time and just grab the lead.

Scores (positions) and ratings were:

Andrew B2 61 (1)
Graham 56 (2)
Martin 48 (3)
Kev 33 (4)

A second playing which we didn't have time to finish but there were a lot of dead creatures and only two dead skeletons. I went with a Graveyard strategy to see if I could match the Beastmasters rate of summoning creatures and just about managed it. Some useful 'Reassemble' incantations helped me keep my force in the field better than Steve's creatures and two of his big hitters were already dead - his Tegu and Panther thing.

The undead horde was about to rumble forward when we had to call it an evening.

Ratings as above.

I think we are only just scratching the surface of the strategies available with this game. Anyone else want to play?

Second hand scores (positions) and ratings:

Andrew B2 24 (1)
Graham 67 (2)
Martin 122 (3)

I managed to persuade Graham to take a card in the middle of a run that Martin wanted and which managed to mess up both of them. I got a run of five cards in the thirties that I really milked.

Great, great filler!
