The original novel, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", by Philip K. Dick (1968)
An absolute must. Even if you saw the movie. The book is simply brilliant, and deep Every time I've read it I've discovered new layers of meaning. It really gets you thinking about what makes us human.

Edit: title and author.

"Ready Player One", by Ernest Cline. (2011)

If you like me, you've read many books where you find yourself shouting at the main character, "No, you idiot! Can't you see the solution to your problem? It's so obvious!"
This is not one of those books.
Yes, it's about a virtual reality world. (A really believable, well-thought out one.)
Yes, it's god tons of 80's nostalgia.
But, to me, it was (as all books should be) a primarily character-driven story. You care about them, and they don't disappoint. They act like normal people, and take you along a rollicking ride at the same time!

Edit: added author and date.

"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", by Jules Verne (1870)

Anything by Verne is a good read, but no book of his has predictions as accurate as this. Nowadays, this book hardly seems like science fiction!

The Scar By China Mieville. The second book of three loosely related novels set in the world of Bas Lag. The first and third novel (Perdido Street Station and Iron Council) have been adorned with more awards however The Scar is a, by far, more adventure novel than the other titles. Highly recommended.

"House of Stairs", by William Sleator (1974)

It's a kids' book, but still well worth the read. In fact, I question how many kids really understood it. Actually, not sure many adults did either. It does raise some questions about human nature.

Just trust me, and read it.

(BTW, his "Interstellar Pig" was also an excellent book, but not as earth-shaking.)
