Hello there everyone,

This is a list for any type of bad experiences that ou may have had with a company to warn others. This isn't a list for "OMG my orc warlard had a broken hand", but more for "OMG this company lied and took my money."

We work hard for our money, and to have it taken from us with nothing in return is never cool. Lets make it known that these companies need to change their ways or move on.

Feel free to post whatever classifies as:
- A Scam: The company took your money with nothing in return.
- A Delay: Within reason of course. 2 months is understandable. 2 years without anything, and broken promises is not.
- A Shady Way: Something that classifies into bad customer service or business practices.

I am very willing to update and pull titles off, when they prove they have made steps to better themselves. Until.....

On with the list of who to avoid!

Edit: There is another list now. This one is from Kuba P: Honest, Professional, On Time. Kickstarter Creators Hall of Fame. Please visit it and give it thumbs up as well!

Game: Odin's Ravens

Classification: Scam

I am sure we have all heard the story of how Seth Nemec took $22,559.00 from KS backers and then disappeared. If not, then here is 22 pages of comments about it. Or to sum it up: he took money from backers, disappered, went on a purchasing spree on ebay, and no one can find him.

And no one has received a copy of Odin's Ravens yet.

Before going forward, please refrain from saying anything like "Servers those backers right for not getting anything." The bottom line, no matter how questionable the material...a scam is a scam.

Per the last update on indiegogo, this is getting close to shipping.

That was 3 months ago, before the creator disappeared. And there has not been one update with a picture in it of the actual game.

09/08 Update: Mine has shipped out and arrived. Others are still waiting. Hopefully everything should be going out soon.

Watch out for Ian Chase products. To his credit, he did manage to steal more than Seth Nemec: $26,682.00

08/05/14 Edit: I hold true to my word if there is some sort of turnaround. Today there was an update, however it is only about the digital artbook (which I don't care about). There were no pictures of the game or any sort of shipping update.

It took CMoN over a year from its due date to ship. That is not that bad...its really annoying, but then shipping started...and CMoN went dark.

Why? With all these comments of people asking questions about shipping status for US and overseas backers....and nothing going answered. Oh yea, the Zombieside KS was happening at the same time.

It was announced that all US shipping has been completed. BUT WAIT!!! There are a lot of backers (like me) that had moderately big orders that have not received the game, or even a tracking #.

So who did they dish that off to now to fix? Soda Pop Miniatures. Jump ship: Successful!

Edit: This is the link to the US shipping complete update, with comment after comment of people that confirmed their pledge and have nothing.

Update:CMoN just posted this update where they take the blame for missed packages. Lets see if everything gets out by monday.

Delay will still be listed, but CMoN has delivered.

Thankfully I got my copy and it was complete (except for the $20 I paid for LitD Expansion, which is...well..who knows). But there a lot of people who are still missing parts from when this shipped....around October of last year. Not to mention the expansion that is now being refunded...or we think it is just the expansion. Really we have no idea how much is being refunded.

And lets not forget the 12 KS projects that have started since DDD was funded....a little over one year go. A lot of people suggest when you have a problem with Queen games, just go to their new project, pledge $1, and get your answers.

That is not acceptable customer service! I am striking this last point because Queen is now refunding backers for missing parts, and shipping out the rest.

Classification: Scam/Delay/Shady Ways

Here is a situation in a nutshell:

- Fire Mountain Games published the Ogre: Nightfall sheets and have sent some out. But many are still waiting.

- No one is getting repsonces from their customer service.

- We don't know if the rules will ever come out.

- It is limited quanties, but you can still buy it on their website. Oh, did I mention that they don't seem to be sending anything out and not responding to messages? (It is possible that not all have been purchased...but without a count of how many left...who knows.)

Just for fun, here are 3 of the 4 threads on the BGG game page:

DO NOT BUY: Update after talking to SJG

Ogre Nightfall allegedly shipping 5/19/2014

Record here when you received shipping notice or counters

Update: Fire Mountain Games is no longer distributing this. Steve Jackson is....order now and get it in like 2 days.

Let's not overlook this one! According to her latest update as of April 2014 she is making some progress but so far Porkshanks collected $7840 and has yet to deliver on the project that was funded back in 2011. Compared to some of the others in this list Molly's dollar amount is meager but the commentary and her reasons for the delay have been priceless!!!

Nevertheless some backers seem very optimistic that they will receive the game.

Here's a good article, but to sum it up, Valley Games launched two Kickstarters, one for a new game and one for a reprint of a classic, and didn't tell anyone that it was already in the process of being sued for cheating an investor. All mention of Valley started disappearing while a company called Radiant (run by the same guys) took over. Numerous delays have been announced, and no can really tell what the production status is. It's pretty clear at this point that Valley/Radiant will lose the lawsuit and have no money left to produce the games.

Of the 50+ KS campaigns I've backed, the ones from Game Salute are by far the most delayed. All three games mentioned above are 4-5 months late, with potentially months left to wait. You know it's bad when you get three KS updates in a row, from the same person, for three different games, apologizing about yet another delay.

The delays also extend to any pre-orders you might make on their website: SOS Titanic, Great Heartland Hauling Company. Any that I'm missing?

Don't forget these guys!

Everything!

PURGE: Sins of Science

Started out with great art and the promise of an awesome implementation of RTS play. Even offered early bird specials for game + expansion, playmats, and art books.

The main game came out only 6 months late, but the printing was smeared and the cards were unevenly and raggedly cut (shower of card shavings on the carpet, anyone?). Once taken out, the box was useless for storing cards, and the game was unplayable with the ruleset included in the box. They said they could not correct, and only a small percentage of backers got crappy cards (doubtful, but if so I have some crappy luck).

Answer? We'll fix the errata if you pay $$ for the reprinted cards shake

And THEN! Silence.... for a long, long, long time. The errata was never fixed, cards never reprinted, and people NEVER got their expansions, playmats, art books, or anything else they put money in for. No doubt, it went to the creators' legal fees after getting arrested for drunken acts of arson in their city of residence.

After that NovaForge was "under new management" and promised once to get the expansions out. Nope. Nothing yet. My one and only kickstarter loss. gulp

Classification: Who the hell knows at this point.

The Duke Nukem of the wargaming scene, with the difference that Duke Nukem got released eventually.

I'm not entrenched deeply enough in this mess to really do the story justice. But following the Total War saga is a hobby unto itself in the wargaming community.

The gist of it is that publisher HMS/GRD, which is basically two guys living in a shack, announced back in, oh I don't know, some time in the mid-aughties, that they would reprint good old Fire in the East, flagship title of the venerable Series: Europa in a new and shiny updated form, and christened the project Total War.

They began taking preorders right away - and they're still taking them to this very day. After some time, when people started asking when the game might be released. Then the promises started.

It would be released very soon. In a few weeks. In May 2008, at the latest. To be fair, they were always very consistent with their release date - since at least 2008, it's always "in a few weeks". But then the excuses began coming in.

The rulebook had been ready, but then the dog ate the only existing copy, so they had to start over. Then they had the whole thing ready and at the printer, but the printer had moved to California without leaving a number, taking the only existing copy of the rulebook and countersheet with him, so they had to start from scratch.

When they had redone everything and had it at another printer's, that printer ran out of pewter, and when the printer invaded Canada to conquer their vast pewter mines, you guessed it, the only copy of the printing materials was lost in the fighting.

Not disheartened by this latest failure, our two heroes decided to abandon printing altogether and offer the rulebook as a manuscript, written by hand in gothic lettering on the finest vellum available. You know, as a goodie for all their loyal customers who'd waited so patiently. But then the Benedictine monk they'd hired to do the handwriting developed a severe case of tenosynovitis, so release had to be delayed another few weeks. When he had recovered, Foot-and-mouth disease broke out in the herd of Mexican cattle they'd planned to use for the vellum, so their vellum supply broke down.

And so on, and so on. They're still taking preoders, and release is still only a few weeks away.

If you're interested in following the development of Total War, I recommend this thread:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/808324/total-war-total-w...
It is like Mahler wanted the symphony to be - it contains everything. Laughter, anguish, glimmers of hope and broken promises. And jokes, quite a few jokes. And contests of guess-the-next-excuse and guess-the-new-release date. Those are the best.

I love his games but kickstarter is clearly not his thing.

I also got A Study in Emerald from him through Kickstarter, which had some minor issues such as a few misprinted tokens. There was also the whole "oh, that stretch goal I announced is too bothersome so I am going to skip it" fiasco.

It doesn't help that he has the communication skills of a rock.

Running 6 (yes, six!) successful campaigns over 4 months proved (unsurprisingly) much more than they could chew at the time... I'm sure the games will eventually arrive, but this publisher lost a lot of credibility for me.

Having said that, I recently backed The Harbour by TMG. I was pretty reluctant, and jumped on board only after careful consideration of their timeline, % of art completion, and other delay-inducing stuff. Hope I won't get burned.

This game and some others added were part of an Indigogo campaign to get a print run complete. The campaign is successful and is moving along. Suddenly, all communication stops and he puts out word that he is having a family crisis. People are patient until he is able to resolve his problems. A few backers receive their games but then the games hit the mass market. There is no word from Mr. Epron on what is going on. I believe a few more people received their items here and there, but then nothing. There is no word on what is going on. Emails are unanswered and no date given for the game. He won't even return to say that he won't or can't send them out. They obviously were made and available, but it is as though he decided to make more money by selling the backers games on the market and pocket the money. Now who knows what his situation was, as he refuses to say, and maybe it was tragic. However, he had backers money and owed at least some explanation. It basically amounts to misappropriation or theft, no matter how noble the cause.

Now I am not saying I want my game and let person "x" suffer or leave their medical bills unpaid, if that's what it was. Without any explanation, it looks like common thievery.

Not one I backed, thankfully, but a pretty striking example.

KS ended in October 2012. The game was scheduled for release in January 2013. Delivered in March 2014...

...assuming you were in the USA.

International backers were finally given a chance to get the game in July 2014, but only if they were willing to pay for shipping again on top of the extra shipping already paid as part of the KS pledge.

Now, Evertide did promise that those paying shipping twice would be given credit against future purchases from them, but people were understandably unimpressed with that offer. One unfortunate backer was quoted a $50 shipping charge.

And of course the kicker was that by this point, the game was available for purchase through Amazon UK.

Product: Grip Mats

Classification: Delay/Shady Ways

Break from Reality really lives up to their name. While raising $117,013 for their Grip Mats campaign...you think they would at least secure a contact with the "only printer that can print this super special material" to make the mats, right?

Nope.

Instead, all we are constantly getting are "the printers should start printing soon" messages and sporadic updates. The KS rule of 6 really plays well into this campaign. If they say a time, then multiply it by 6 (eg. Update in 3 days means 18, mats sending in 2 months means 12). By then we might get an answer.

But truthfully, they jumped it without knowing how to handle the business end. They are artists. So we had massive amounts of designs done for the mats that caused things to come to a grinding halt.

A few designs have been done, but not close to all. Break has asked people if they can change their designs to save them $ on all the art submissions, and quicker shipping. But for the rest...its a waiting game.

In the mean time, if you want a basic design...go to their website and order it so you can get it quickly while we wait for our mats.

I ordered a handful of these mats. It is 2015, and I don't expect to see them this year...

.....2016 isn't looking too good either.

The "Designer" Tristan Convert / "Publisher" Tristan Convert's Games has declared the Dice Age Dice Age KickStarter DEAD on January 9th, 2015, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1536325846/dice-age-the... completely ignoring / dismissing / writing off the fact that hundreds of people did not receive any product from him, ever. He was trying to make the complete clusterfrak of a project work and fulfill it after many bad missteps in the first year, but that apparently got old when interest dried up as people stopped giving him money, and now hundreds of us are completely SOL.

Do Not give Tristan Convert a single dime of your money, ever. Complete Scammer.

I don't say they are entirely bad, the game's quality is top notch and a work of art! But their business practice is so damn shady. I just don't like how Rick handle their problems regarding the topic I experienced. Read them here:

Classification: Delay+, A Shady Way

Original campaign funded on Jul 3 2013 with huge success $139,658, so much so that Alexander Lim over promised by way too much. Promising delivery in Feb 2014.
On Oct 22 2013 his second campaign designed to give more money to the first campaign and get some more people involved successfully funded at $236,625.

2 years past original delivery date now Lim is asking for more money so he can ship the small percentage of the completed product he supposedly has. there are still no where near the complete products promised in even the first campaign let alone the added items promised from the second one

I hope we see these products someday.

Game: Demigods Rising: Strategy Miniature Game

Classification: Delay / A Shady Way

Kickstarter succesfully funded on August 29, 2014 and estimated delivery on July 2015. 63 assembled plastic miniatures promised with the game.

First there were problems with producing resin miniatures due to Titan Forge (or both parties). Poor quality resins produced and they were forced to look alternatives. New partnership found (Prodos) and a second resin-only kickstarter launched while original campaign's backers waited for their plastic miniatures production to start. Backers not happy and some wanted refund, this was not provided. Also to note, the second's campaigns resins were cheaper and significantly better than the 1st campaign's offerings.

As a result, graphics of the game were redo. Creators decide themselves to upgrade plastic version to HIPS and produce it in Europe even though the budget is tight. It was proven that producing HIPS was too slow and challenging so 1st campaign backers were offered a chance to switch their pledge to Demigods Rush edition which is a resin version with 24 unassembled resin miniatures with alternative parts. It was also possible to pay extra for more resin miniatures. Some decides take the offer or switch to 2nd campaign completely and some to wait

to honor what was originally promised and budgeted.

On 24th April 2016 creators decide that they force all backers to Demigods Rush. This would be an assembled version, though, without alternative parts offered before. People start asking for refunds (to be seen if offered, money is tight). Unlocked stretchgoals become meaningless... Deal changes completely to an unsatisfactory level. Story to be continued if this has a happy/satisfactory ending/options or not...

Edit: I will skip most details what happened between 2 years after adding this entry. Shortly told Demigods Rising was able to get UniCast miniatures produced with the help of Archon. Other gameplay components were produced by other company. There were a lot of delays with manufacturing and shipping, but the main thing is that the game got produced. On 23rd March 2018 I finally received the game! Hopefully other backers will soon as well.

I'm kind of sad for having to type this, since I thought, this would be a more professional project ...

Well ... here is the story:

I pledged the "scholar" level - a level that would include all of the first edition PDFs (among other stuff).

My idea of KS is: I pledge for something - I get something.
Also, I get something without having to check into KS every day!
Apparently, I'm wrong.
Apparently, I have to check into KS every day. At least for this campaign.
Alas, I didn't.
And so I missed something entirely wicked:

To receive the first edition PDFs, I had to fill out a survey!
On backerkit!
(seriously? what the hell is backerkit??? According to the colours and layout of the survey and everything, it appeared to be part of Kickstarter. According to some of the comments in the project's comment section, it isn't..)
Also, apparently this "backerkit" is something where I have to register.
Frankly, that's something I do NOT want to do!

I pledged on Kickstarter, I want to get my stuff via Kickstarter and not via a third party tool or whatever this "backerkit" is supposed to be.
And especially, I want to get, what I pledged for, and I do NOT want to read a message like
"The deadline has passed and the submission form is closed. We received nearly 400 submissions, but we may open it again in 3-6 months."

"we may..." or may not ... the future will tell ...

So, apparently I will not get what I paid for, since I didn't check out my KS daily and since I do not want to register anywhere else ...

And what do the fanbois suggest?
"Write a mail to John Wick"

Yeah, great:

Having pledged for something is not sufficient:
- I have to register elsewhere
- I have to check into KS each day, so I don't miss my graciously given "chance" to get WHAT I PLEDGED FOR
- I have to write to the campaign's starter, only to get WHAT I F***ING PLEDGED FOR

Seriously?

shake

Update, 04.10.2017:

So, yeah, even though JWP is delivering slowly, he is ... well ... delivering slowly:

The promised date of delivery has been October '16.
Now, one year later, still lots of what has been promised is missing.
What more than 3/4 of the backers are receiving, though, are invitations to spend their money on other 7th sea related projects.
So, chances are, JWP efforts will go into those other projects rather than into delivering what has been promised 1 year ago.
What the backers are getting additionally, though, are PDF preview editions of everything, allong with the "invitation" to proofread them and to report the mistakes.
YAY! Delegate work to those who have already payed for the product!
Great marketing strategy.

However, according to

all of this is "common kickstarter behaviour".

Let's be honest: No, it is not!
For someone who has backed a couple of projects I can tell: No, it is not!
Common kickstartet behaviour is: finishing one campaign and then, afterwards, posting an ad to the next.
For this campaign I have paid to receive advertisement and "unpaid work offers" among the rest.

In my eyes this campaign becomes more and more a very elaborate scam.
And, reading the comment section, apparently I'm not alone on this opinion, as others are waiting for their special stuff (such as "their own character included") and in different social media sites, mistrust is growing, too.

Then again, maybe this is, what you are supposed to expect, when you contribute 40$ to the pot and expect to receive about 60-70 PDFs + some MP3s ...

So, let's see, where this is going ...

Game: Zero Agents

Classification: Scam

Zero Agents has been a bit of a rollercoaster. Shortly after it finished, the company went dark on the updates, claiming that their IP was challenged.

Maybe it happened again? It has been 9 months since their last update, and no one has heard a peep from them. But the company has been backing other products in the mean time and logging into KS.

Nothing has been completed or sent out...so it looks like us backers are out our money.

I call it how I see it on this one: this company is just a scam.
