I just picked up Netrunner Android: Netrunner because I heard a lot of good things about it. Its been on my want list for awhile and I got to cross it off today

So I get home, open the box, and find this:

I understand the concept of perceived value: the thought that someone won't pay forty dollars for a game unless it comes in a forty-dollar-game sized game box. I'm just not so sure its true anymore. I mean, I wasn't annoyed because I felt that I had been cheated or mislead. Any annoyance I felt was that this box was taking up what? 3x the space it needed? On my already cramped game shelves....

So I was wondering what game do you have that came in an 'over-sized' box? Did you buy it knowing that you were getting 'more box' than necessary? And would you have still bought it if it came in a box 1/3 it's size at the same price?

As I said, I had heard a lot of good things about this game. I understand that there's also a belief by manufacturers that they have to have a large box to be visible on the store shelf. I think maybe some of these concepts are post internet leftovers, when perceived value and shelf presence were major factors contributing to sales (along with advertising and word of mouth). Now with the aid of sites like BGG, You Tube, and all the review sites/blogs out there a game can be thoroughly researched and valued prior to setting foot in a store. And in cases of online purchase- things like perceived value and shelf presence don't really enter into it anymore. So- did I know I was getting an over-sized box? Didn't occur to me until I opened it. Would I have purchased it if it was in a 'munchkin' size box? Yeah, I think I would have preferred it if it was taking up less space on my shelf.

Thank you Splendor box for taking up as much room on my shelf as Sentinels of the Multiverse and having 1/10th the physical content.

The dimensions (height and width) of the box for this fantastic game match the size of the game board. However, the depth of the box far exceeds the remainder of the contents... 30 cards, 6 spaceship miniatures, 1 pawn, and 1 rule book. It would have fit far better in a box the size of a Ticket to Ride Expansion map.

The box has 2 of the 3 dimensions about right, but the height of the box is 2.5 times what it needs to be

This is the first box that comes to mind for me. It could easily have been packaged in a box 1/4 the size.

This and many others with such type of boxes (for example, Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island, Theseus: The Dark Orbit).

This would fit in a box easily half the size. This is common with Queen, who enjoy wasting your game storage space in general. This game was the first time that the oversized box seemed like a ploy to justify a higher price to me, though. This game has a $63 msrp, which most people wouldn't want to pay for a game that plays in 30 minutes and fits in a Race for the Galaxy sized box. Not ok if your game storage space is a limited commodity. Knock off the crap, Queen. At least make your game boxes less deep when they don't need to be.
