Played this one with Ian, Tegan, Pete, Sandy and Mike. This game is chaos. It boils down to who can countdown from 10 to 1 fastest while cubes are wildly thrown across a table sometimes landing in cups and culminating in one person trying to slam a paddle on top of as many other player's fingers as possible.

It's probably as close to a dexterity auction game that you'll get and you're trying to collect sets of items. More items in a set means more points.

I was terrible at this and ended up spending most of my cubes claiming measly sets that were actually worth less than what I paid for them. I would've scored better if I didn't bid for anything the entire game but still a very fun filler.

Just one round of this before dinner with the same group. I'm absolutely terrible at it. I'm no good at bluffing and I'm no good at calling other people's bluffs so I'm often out of the game very early. I think Tegan won this.

Saw this one out a few times during the day. I played with Ian, Tegan, Sandy and Pete. It's a stunning looking game as you can see in the pictures below.

I'm really unlucky with taking extra tickets during the game so I stuck with my 2 original tickets and built a long route from San Francisco through Canada to Raleigh. I thought Sandy and Ian were going to pip me at the end with the most tickets bonus but surprisingly Pete took that out and I won by a point. It was a pretty close game overall with maybe a 15 point spread.

Next up with the same group was Glory to Rome. This has become a favourite in the past year and gets played at nearly every meet. A fairly low scoring game with Pete taking the win on 15 points and everyone else scoring just a few less.

Impulse is the new game from Glory to Rome designer Carl Chudyk and for the first couple plays can also be quite the head scratcher. Just like GtR each cards can be used for umpteen different things like positions on the board, actions to take in the "Impulse", battle reinforcements and minerals that can be refined to score massive points. I don't think it's as elegant as Glory to Rome (gameplay wise but also definitely in the art department) but it has space ships!

Ian had a very slow start trying to build a mine/refine engine while the rest of us scored slowly but surely through occupying the sector core and blowing each other up. But eventually it was Ian who won when he got bored of the mining business and just sent a huge cruiser fleet across the board wiping out anything in his path.

My final game of the night with Ian, Pete and Sandy. It's simply one of the best games going and if I only had this to play for the rest of my days I wouldn't be too unhappy about it.

Sandy won this with at least 3 of the big scoring developments.

Ernest got out his shiny new copy to play with Maggie, Tim and myself.

We used the standard rules with the following changes:
- No intrigue
- No additional IP
- Politicians sent to Siberia lost their declared IP
- Players would win if their faction got 3 waves
- Politicians aged more than 1 year per turn

I won by turn 5 after controlling the PC and most of the top ranks.

Next up the same group was joined by Sandra for this unique euro. After teaching/refreshing the rules we got going with a medium length game. Each player has a hidden scoring condition (which all players score from at the end of the game) as well as a hidden game end condition. This leads to players trying not to tip their hand too early, while also trying to figure out everyone else's scoring condition so they can keep up. As well as all that, everyone is trying to manage the archipelago and prevent an uprising that ends the game with everyone losing.

Turn order is really important in this game, and Q used it to good effect to dominate the money in the game. The game ended with his condition being fulfilled (seven towns built), and he ended up winning (there were two cards that scored money in the game).

I really enjoy this game, and this play what pretty quick for a five player medium length. All up it took about two hours plus teaching.

After dinner I hooked up with David to play this great card game. It was David's second game, and he used my Miskatonic deck while I used a Shub monster deck.

The Miskatonic deck had performed really well for me in my last game against Karl, but unfortunately it didn't work at all for David, as he constantly had no characters in his hand. This hampered his game considerably and I won with three story cards to one.

Back to the drawing board with that deck so...

As the night was wearing on, I taught David this great little abstract card game, in which you're trying to take the lowest scoring cards possible from the persistent parade of cards in the centre of the table. The trick is, if you have the majority of one colour, rather than count their values (0-10) you flip them over and only count each as one point. So you're trying to take none, if you can't then take low point cards, if you can't then take enough cards to give you majority.

I think I ended up winning this?

I did read later that, in a two player game, two cards more than your opponent are required to achieve majority. We played using one but it's still a fun game.

I was supposed to start with a game of Galactic Strike Force but I was running late and then my team-mates were running late and then some new attendees showed up!

Ashlee(?) was waiting for Jacob's epic Game of Thrones battle so we decided to play this quick filler with Q(?) in the meantime.

I love this game. There's very little to it I'll admit and it is mostly luck but it does allow you to carry on a conversation and play something at the same time (a task my brain is apparently not suited for )

I believe Q won but I don't think we even finished to be honest.

After this I played Elevenses and Archipelago so skip to after dinner!

After dinner I joined forces with Mark as the Federation in a game of the Star Trek: Fleet Captains.

Opposing us were the sneaky Roluman scumbags Jason and Richard.

After a rules explanation from Jason we were dealt our initial ships which we divided up and then drew mission cards.

Our Romulan opponents drew mostly missions related to Espionage and generally cloaking and decloaking around the galaxy showing off. In fact, all of Jason's starting missions were secret (face down) ones and I think 2 of Richard's 3 might have been as well.

Mark drew some science and control based missions while my missions cards read something like "punch all of the Rolumans in the mouth and once they're all bleeding then explode their ships with extreme prejudice and hear the lamentations of their loved ones". Something like that anyway.

I had a bit of a false start that involved finding a planet, then finding a supernova next door, then miraculously finding my ships all back at home in front of newly cleared space for some reason.

After that I did what any Federation captain would do. I marched into the Romulan neutral zone and set about picking a fight.

I managed to pick off one of Jason's little science-y vessels and Mark and I had a lot of lucky random victory points (something the game gives out indiscriminately). The final VP came from a card named Dramatic Defeat which shows a picture of Kirk doing his best impression of Grumpy Cat that yields a VP if your ship is destroyed. After anti-thematically flying into the heart of Romulan space and kicking over all of their sandcastles, this was fairly inevitable.

I had fun with this but it's waaaay too random and swing-y to be taken seriously by anyone. The game consists of going to a location, flipping it over to see what happens, then rolling a die to see if anything else happens, then maybe fulfilling arbitrary missions for victory points, then getting new missions which have conditions you may already fulfill (so you just succeed at them).

I had a character that added +1 to my weapons on a ship. Richard had a character that stole one of our ships and let Richard fly it around for free. I had an encounter that wiped out a 7 hex radius. I had another that gave me a free victory point.

Dramatic Defeat in all it's glory

If you aren't going to get into the theme, just roll a die for an hour and see who got the higher number. If you are going to get into the theme... all power to the D6!

We finished riding our tickets and headed off to Jupiter to do some rescuing.

Slowly but surely we cooperatively plunged into chaos with 27 goodies of the required 28 goodies needed to die for us to lose the game taken care of.

Somehow the last one then survived for ages for us to load up and launch the escape pod.

Seems we got a rule wrong which may or may not have helped. Will do better next time with a less chaotic approach.

So astounding was the development path of our stone age civilisations than no sooner had we passed through the stone age but we found ourselves exploring new frontiers and developing civilisations in space.

Seems we didn't bother developing sailing ships, bypassing that technology and going straight to spaceships.
