I had dire reservations about this game from all the BGG hate. I also am so terrible at spatial things but the whole mechanic still seemed interesting so I thought I should give it a shot since Tony loves it !!

Well you know, it seems no one is NOT hot or cold about this game-- and I really did enjoy it !! But as I have preached about before-- if you have an ISSUE with on a first game of this type played 2 player with an expert-- if you INDEED have said issue that you are going to try to do decent or WIN by some chance and if that DOESN'T happen you are going to have a bad time or get irate later-- then don't play this. The person who isn't familiar with the what the event cards do especially in the final 1/3 of the game will be at an ATROCIOUS disadvantage. BUT if you love the game's design like I did.. you can just chalk it up to learning and admire indeed how obvious it is that this amazingly constructed game was YEARS in development !!

I actually did decent in the front game-- I managed my money well -- I had media and mayor for pretty much the entire first half of the game-- and I thought.. well OK-- this kind of game is far from anything I do decent at on first playings-- so perhaps I shall do OK.

Um, no.

In my somewhat brain dead state, through no fault of Tony's as he taught excellently-- I kept thinking when time came for all the political elections it was the MAJORITY of a color you own.. NOT THE HIGHEST value even though Tony helpfully reminded me of that repeatedly. ( I told you in the header we were all a tad out of it this day.) Soooooooooooooooooo after staying fairly close and even GASP!! having a small lead until the latter part of the 2nd phase.. here come the disasters--

in ONE TURN. ONE. TURN. ONE. ONE TURN I SAY !!--- I had 14 , yes 14..events turn over that ALL screwed ME. The game was virtually OVER then. I lost 32 dollars and 18 points IN THAT one turn. So there would have had to be some sort of miracle for me to remotely recover-- and there wasn't. Tony easily got EVERYTHING political office wise even eventually taking Mayor and Media away from me -- and for anyone who knows this game.. if you are playing 2 player and ONE person has all of the political offices and all their inherent benefits -- you are pretty much looking at a quixotic rest of the game!!

Still, I had a very good time-- this is an AMAZING design -- and if there had been a scant few more cards in the third phase deck I COULD have made some huge move to drastically increase my score. Not to remotely catch up but to go down with a fight instead of flames.

I had everything set to get a 4-slot yellow building to place on top of one of Tony's blocks that would have touched SEVEN other yellow placements-- I just needed 2 turns to GET there-- alas there was only one turn left in the game as on Tony's next turn the Olympics card turned around.

I am indeed stoked to play this again, perhaps with 3 or 4 so that mistakes like I made aren't QUITE so permanently devastating.

SCORES:

Tony 317
Kel 107 ( Yes he lapped me twice. I was just praying for the moral victory of the newbie with everything stacked against him to break 100.. and I did !! YAY !!)

NOTABLE QUOTES:

I have media, hello this is Mackdaddy reporting on all the events from WMAD.

Eww, Who the hell wants to go to Water Sports Pizza?
Hey I am the mayor, Bitches !.. OH wait, I am not anymore. I am just a slumlord.
Dude, I am getting raped already are you REALLY going to build a fucking temple to sacrifice my humans? Yes, they are scum who live in your scummy slumlord apartments !!

Another good candidate for " GAMES ONLY YOU HAVE PLAYED IN JULY 2014" -- another old game show obscurity to the table-- another title that turns out to be a ton of fun -- another off my unplayed list-- and another game that since we spent as much time LAUGHING as playing this very short game-- this was indeed an unqualified success and we shall be getting this to the table more !!

This rather successful NBC game of the early 1960s ( running almost 4 years -- at a time when nearly every single show on NBC daytime save for Concentration and Jeopardy lasted 13 or 26 weeks !!) has a very simple premise: You are allowed a few seconds to study a 9 slot board where there are " answers" to mostly very simple questions -- then the slots on the board are covered-- the host asks questions that match the answers and you have to remember and select the slot with the correct answer.

As one can surmise the humor comments write themselves when someone chooses incorrectly : Here are two examples from our game :

I couldn't remember that " ABSESTOS SHINGLES" ( remember folks this game is 50 years old !!) was under slot 8 .. so when I was asked " What goes on your roof?" I picked slot 4 which said " A bearskin Rug" -- cue 10 mins. of guffawing about Kel's house having a bearskin rug for a roof.

I couldn't remember " IN your Mouth" was under slot 2 .. so when I was asked " Where do you put your spoonful of yummy ice cream?" I picked slot one which said " Up your Nose " -- cue 10 more mins. of hilarity as we conceived of a tragic news report where someone dies of ice cream drowning.

I did manage to squeak out a win finally but Tony totally cleared the board in the bonus game winning him the car and taking the overall win. Poor Aimee I think was so busy laughing she couldn't concentrate to remember where some answers were BUT she only lost one of her games by ONE answer putting up a valiant effort. Can't wait to play this again !

SCORES:

A : $0
K : $6025
T : $8625

Yet more game show fun and off my unplayed list !! I managed even in my very brain jellified state to pull out answers to questions from some obscure part of my brain, or perhaps my ass, to take the win here. I really don't know where I remembered who Polyanna was OR that the Royal Family of Monaco's last name was Grimaldi-- plus I was the ONLY person to stop in their bonus game then to have revealed I WOULD INDEED have hit the devil on the next spin!! ( AImee stopped in her bonus game too but would have won if she had continued.) At last luck on my side for a game-- great fun !!

SCORES

Kel $6800
Aimee $1950
Tony $500

NOTABLE QUOTES:

Aimee wasn't up on her obscure nursery rhyme peeps so her reply to " FIll in the third : WInken, Blinken... and .." was NOT Nod, but instead was TINKIN.

All game events stop for 20 mins as people fall over laughing and decide to name children Tinkin. And then we say Tony is Tinkin about his next answer.

Tony did not approve of Aimee's playing it safe in her bonus round and when she stopped at $950 he told her she was a loser wimp and to eat a dick. She said " Good Luck in your next game Bitch, I hope you get the devil on the first spin" As we started laughing uncontrollably I made it worse by literally pretending to be the host of this show Jack Barry, famous for the game show scandals of the 1950s and saying" Excuse me.. EXCUSE ME !! I have already gotten in so much trouble-- I really don't think CBS standards and practices are going to approve of me allowing contestants to tell each other to eat dicks" -- more guffawing. !!! Fun !!

The already tired Aimee had laughed herself pretty much into a coma-- so she left us to get ready to sleep and Tony and I said we would play two quick games of this to end our evening.

The first game I won by Tony putting Charlemagne's crowning WAY too late and then my also RATHER punchy self SAID The great fire of london in the 2nd game in the right place but PUT it in the card line wrong idiotically and then I totally had no clue that there was an adding machine invented between the abacus and modern times, and the correctly-placing Tony took the big win in game 2 .
