Probably the most obvious link between two games is an expansion set.

How do you feel about expansions? What is your favorite one?

A slightly less obvious link between games is that of a game family. For example, clearly all the 18xx games are somehow similar yet still different enough to qualify as distinct game experiences.

How would you group a game family? What characteristics would you take into account?

Getting into even murkier links: games that share certain mechanics.

Which mechanic do you feel creates a substantial link between games? Which mechanic does not and why?

And finally, something really subjective.

Name two games that are forever linked in your mind, where you don't expect them to be linked for anyone else. And what is the connection?

A good week of gaming - we visited a gaming group on Saturday where we played quite a few games. Though I'm sure Eric's will be even more impressive this week...

I had gotten Guild Stack last Essen, and it was one of the few games that was still sitting lonely and unplayed. Now that I've played it, I'm not sure why it took so long: it's actually a very nice game, and probably one of my Essen highlights in retrospect. You need to hire craftsmen (cards), for which you need to have to correct buildings present (you get one per turn free). They each come with their own benefits: one of the more useful ones is scoring points. And its components are breathtaking. (I also did horribly in our game).

La Granja did not disappoint. If not for the Guild Stack, it would have been this week's highlight. The mechanism by which you can use a card in one of four ways is quite interesting - tough choices!

Isaribi is also very nice. Lighter than the above two games, but it still fascinates. Catch fish and sell them for maximum profit, and don't over-invest in your boat like I did!

3 x Revolver Expansion 1.1: Ambush on Gunshot Trail (new to me)
1 x Eight-Minute Empire
1 x Wilderness
1 x Guildhall: Job Faire

We tried expansion for one of my favorites - Revolver. Ambush thing works great and in such types of games there can never be enough different cards. Second module and possibility of deck building aspect does not interest me at all.
Some time ago my girlfriend bought Eight-Minute Empire, but after couple games she didn't like it at all. Last weekend I showed the game to our gaming group partners and they weren't fascinated as well. But we still haven't played with full number of players (tried with max 3). It seems to me that game could be better that way.

New to Me:

d10-6 Splendor x2
d10-5 BANG! The Dice Game x2
d10-7 Linko! x1

Red7 x1

Return Visits:

d10-7 Battle Line x2
d10-5 Diamant x1
d10-6 Dixit x1
d10-8 Keyflower x1
d10-8 Nations x1
d10-6 Ticket to Ride x1

Random Musings:

Tried to play Red7 and all of us failed miserably in our first attempt. I missed that one can both play a card to one's palette AND discard a card despite scouring the rules numerous times to try and see what was going wrong. Want to try again before rendering judgement.

I can see why Splendor was nominated for SdJ. It isn't a game that I will necessarily seek out to play but don't mind playing from time to time.

Linko! has a good chance to become a favorite filler until the next one comes along.

Speaking of families, BANG! The Dice Game is a much quicker way to play the game, but I'm not sure it is a better game.

Finally played Nations as intended with all the cards mixed together. We all played on the normal level of difficulty. I was able to use my leaders to great effect and also built 5 wonders to win.

.10. 1x Rail USA
_9_ 1x Paths of Glory
_9_ 1x Warriors of God

Clearly a pretty darn good week.

Rail USA's got a whole lot of subtlety to it, I feel. This our first play ended with two players with in 5 of each other, and the third about 50 points behind. These were approximately the relative scores for a full two-thirds of the game, although I managed to close the gap between me and first place from ~15. I'm really excited to play this sucker again.

This week also saw my first complete play of Paths of Glory, and my first play of any CDG with separate decks for the two players. I finally got to live the card angst! As the Allies, I failed to understand how weak the Italian forces really are... but I was able to cheese my way into enough points I wouldn't have been able to defend such that I won by concession when the score hit 2.

First play of Warriors of God in 4.5 years, and it makes more sense to me now. Everything from the flow of play to the broad strokes of strategy. Maybe it had something to do with sitting on the other side of the board. I won Turn 6 as the English due to holding early gains well.

Nothing new to me this week.

Repeat visits:

d10-6 Jungle Speed 20+ plays!!!
d10-7 King of Tokyo 3 plays.

Went on a junior high (6th through 8th grade) retreat this past weekend. The current group REALLY loves Jungle Speed, so it was in almost constant play over the weekend. Speed dexterity games are not my strength, but I was finally able to win a few late Saturday nite as the kids were worn out and I was still going pretty strong

Also played several games of King of Tokyo there, all three as Kraken. I had unusually good luck/success, winning all three of the games. I did enjoy finally giving the expansion for it King of Tokyo: Power Up! a try for the first time. In the theme of this geeklist, I'm still not entirely certain where I lie on this one. I enjoyed the added powers/bonuses, but am not convinced that they're very balanced or that the game really needs it. The game with the expansion also went a good bit longer than the other two for some reason...although I'm not sure if that's due to the expansion or not.

Also played a number of games of Bohnanza, Dead Man's Draw, and Lost Cities with my son on the iPad

I just finished writing up my WBC GeekList, which I encourage you all to take a look at:

The Brosius family attends the 2014 World Boardgaming Championships

During WBC I played 34 games---30 in the tournament and 4 in open gaming.

I also played 3 more games on Monday night, which I'll describe here.

.10! Saint Petersburg -- We started with a fast game of Saint Petersburg. I realized that I would lose the orange game in the long term if we played the usual cautious game, so I decided to push the blue cards to end the game quickly, and there were a lot of cheap blues, which John helped me buy up. This really disoriented Joe, who isn't used to people opening up orange card spaces for other people, but there sure were plenty of orange cards to buy (almost like my heat of Saint Petersburg at WBC.) It's cool how this game can shift complexion as a result of apparently minor decisions.

_8_ King of Tokyo -- Geoff managed to buy Wings, an upgrade that allows you to avoid all damage for a turn by spending 2 energy, and he amassed a batch of energy that allowed him to camp in Tokyo and withstand the attacks. Joe bought a card that score extra notoriety if he rolled 1-1-1 and another that gave him an extra turn, minus one die, if he rolled 1-1-1, and this allowed him to close on Geoff fast, but not fast enough, as Geoff made it to 20. I survived, which is more than some did, but I was mostly an innocent bystander.

_8_ Fast Food Franchise -- I was tired after WBC but had time for one more game of this title. I drew a Good Credit strategy card my first time around, and based on that, I started Burger Brothers in LA and SD just after passing Investment Opportunity (the big problem with Burger Brothers is liquidity, and I had liquidity thanks to the card.) The next time around I got another Good Credit card, and later in the game I drew a third, allowing me to take $300,000 in loans and expand Burger Brothers as fast as I could (including paying $100,000 to go into a Market the hard way twice. Joe R. had a reasonably strong Steak & Salad, Michael built Whole Doughnut to about 15, but no one could match the full power of Burger Brothers, which ended the game with 6 connected markets, 25 out of 30 franchises on the board, and $1,300,000 in cash (enough to win despite my three loans!) It was a really cool game; you don't see a full-blown, pedal-to-the-metal Burger Brothers victory very often.
