The grandparents and wife were gracious enough to give me the gift of seven days of uninterrupted gaming.
I met a lot of awesome people, got to see a bunch of folks I haven't seen in years, and played a whole lot of games.

I log my plays on BGG, but I wish I took notes to remember the 'experience' better. As it is, this is my stream of consciousness memory of the week.

I split the hotel room with Justin. We stayed at the Continental Inn, and only had to play Frogger twice. Even though we play different games, we timed our start and end times such that we could drive ACROSS THE STREET.

Okay, enough background, onto the games!

Sunday 9AM
We decided to get on the road at 5:45AM so we could get to the Host and register in time for the 9AM 18xx heat.
The game ended up being a total asterisk, as there were several rules violations. We floated a company that couldn't open because it was tokened out, cities were paid out twice with the same train, etc. Whoops! Whatever, it was still a fun game. Between the 4 of us playing, the players had 3 complete games worth of experience (I was the total newbie). I got crushed with my lousy freight trains early game and local trains late. Definitely needs more plays.

Sunday afternoon. I thought I was being clever opening the purple BCR and the red SCR with the number 7 investor during the opening stock round. End game the track was exactly what I wanted, and I was earning some big bucks for owning both companies. However, early game I had the BCR and the number 7 lay track to get an early investor meetup. It ended up completely cutting off the SCR. I'm not sure opening the SCR early was a mistake, as I didn't have to worry about someone else picking it up and tokening out the BCR. But it definitely didn't do any favors early game earning $4/share. Prolly shoulda saved up and made a play for it in the second stock round? More plays are needed to determine for sure.

I believe Eric had the line of the game shortly after the communists were ousted and the permanent trains were available. His company withholds, and I complain being the only other shareholder. Apparently "I shoulda read the prospectus in more detail".

Also I didn't come in 4th in this one. Sweet!

Sunday evening
Met up with John and Greg and played a great game of Suburbia. It was a teaching game for another guy, and he ended up doing pretty well. I didn't get any of the public goals, which ended up giving the game away.

I brought this game with the expansion, but it was in the car. I need to get the expansion to the table sooner or later.

Monday morning
I've admired this game from afar for a while, never had the chance to actually play it though. I made it to the demo in the morning, and listened to Matt teach the game. It seemed easy enough and signed up for the tournament.

I ended up getting paired against a fellow who lives within 30 minutes of me. We had a great game. I was the Yellow dude. We kept track of 'bloodiest battles' and I had a 24-17 win. Lot of dead blocks! Felt good.
We both had our faction leaders out in battle in a fight in the 6th week, and the fight left his leader with a single block! Going into week 7, I had the cards to get the kill, but he was able to get initiative. I made the choice to follow in pursuit to gun his leader down, rather than secure the VP locations. Unfortunately, he was able to run his leader to another group of blocks before I could battle and kill the leader.
Very close game!

Even though they were giving away copies of the game as door prizes for those who played all day, I didn't continue in the tournament. I knew I was going to buy this anyway, and nowadays my time is more valuable. It was time for open gaming.

This was a 3 player game with Justin and Joe. I think I was the Darklings, and ended up getting zoned out. Justin won with the Halflings, simply amassing cubes and spending them on spades in the last few turns. He won by lots, couldn't compete.

Another 3 player game with Justin and Joe.
All 3 of us were randomly assigned to the Restorationists. The game seems interesting, but definitely need to have more people. Need to try this with 5 next time.

Justin and Joe left for a tournament heat of Napoleonic Wars. So I was left to fend for myself in the open gaming hall. No problem! Victor, Reuven and Ed (3 dudes I've never met before) had just finished playing something and were discussing what to play next. Like I belong there, I sit at the table and asked if I could join in.
(These guys are awesome, we ended up playing a lot more games all week, so it turns out they didn't care that I invited myself into their group).

This game ended up being pretty sweet. Who would have thought that dressmaking could be fun? Also landed my first win of the con! I think I made the most dresses? Not sure how I won, I was really just focusing on having a fun time playing with these guys.

After Rococo, Vic pulled out his super pimped out version of Euphoria. BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL game. Wasn't too difficult to learn, despite everything that's going on in this game.
Reuven won it, but I think I was only 2 or 3 turns away from dropping my final 3 stars. It was a pretty balanced game, despite having such different starting conditions. I'm not convinced it's entirely balanced though, that green faction seems underpowered. Might need to play more. Would be happy to play it with that pimped out copy. (Those gold pieces were like, 3 pounds each. It's awesome.)

Tuesday morning.
I think I slept in this morning. We were up late last night. After Euphoria, Justin and I went to Sonic and got some shakes. Mmmm Shakes!

Again I found a random table in open gaming that had 3 people and hadn't started playing yet. These guys were about to start teaching the game. Thankfully they were happy with letting me join them. I sorta knew how to play going in, but the intro rules explanation helped a lot. It turns out that this game is great.

I won it by focusing on that top track with tons of 2x markers. I think in the last round I ended up lapping everyone with something like 120 end of turn points.

I saw John walking around open gaming, but there weren't any tables. I mentioned Concordia, as we'd both heard of the game but hadn't had a chance to play it yet. We decided to walk over to the Demo area downstairs and get the Demo.

Thankfully a third guy joined in during the rules explanation, so we could get a real game in. The game ended up being crazy close. John won it by A FREAKING POINT thanks to his special scoring cards. Good game John!

A massive headache manifested itself right in the top of my head during the game. Dehydration probably. This wasn't my first rodeo, and I know I need to drink lots of water during these cons. However this morning I didn't pay attention to my own rule. After the game I went back to the hotel room and closed my eyes for an hour. After the nap I was back in the saddle ready for more gaming!

Time for another tournament heat. I came in 3rd in Automobile at my last WBC (back in 2011), so I was hoping to relive that experience. This game was one heck of a game. Got to play with Lyman and 2 other fellas.
I remember competing with myself on 2 separate times in the game in the mid-range market. At the end of the 3rd round, I was way ahead. I'd sold every car with every plant at mass production. I was fat, dumb and happy.
Then turn 4 hit, and the demand was WAY too low.
Midrange we built 31 cars (I think only 17 sell on average) and there were over 40 low-end cars built. I ended up taking 8 or 9 cubes due to unsold cars. I had the most unsold cars that round by FAR. Whoops!

After Automobile, it was time for more Martin Wallace. Brass. Perhaps the best game ever. What a fantastic game. Love this thing.

I ended up going for a heavy production strategy. I think I built my level 4 iron mill in age 1, since no one else was building iron and they were doing seriously heavy development. The guy who won ended up winning with the rails/ships strategy.

Wednesday morning - tournament heat
Another awesome game. It was a 6 player game, and we were able to finish it in just over 2 hours. One of the best games of DS I ever played.
Insects ended up winning, I played the spiders and came in a distant second. But between me and the winner there were a good 15 points to guys 3-6.
Notable moves:
-I blighted the amphibians on turn 1.
-I took the wasteland action to ensure the water and sun would dry up next to the tundra. One of the more blatant attacks I've ever made in this game. It ended up crushing the reptiles, leaving him with only 1 other sun on the board.
-Insects got to play a pretty massive catastrophe, which ensured he got a 15 point survival bonus. Crazy good play.

Unfortunately Justin and Tom were in a 4 player game that just wouldn't end. I sat around for a good 45 minutes waiting for Justin to finish so we could grab some food. I gave up waiting and got some hotel food. Their game ended up taking another 2 hours before it ended.

Back into open gaming. I met up with Vic, Reuven and Ed again. This time they broke out Istanbul. Interesting game and I understand why it won the Kennerspiel, but it's definitely not a gamers game.
I took this one home, with Vic saying he was 1 turn away from winning. Mmmmm stealing the victory! Best!

Justin's game finished around the same time as mine. Over to Long John Silvers / KFC for a late lunch!

Justin and I tackled the open gaming room, pulled this out and threw up the 'players wanted' kiosk.
After 5 minutes, Heather and Josh joined in, and we got into the rules explanation. Heather hadn't played before, but she picked it up really quick.
A good game, but Justin, Josh and Heather all went deep into the expedition strategies. I won it with a pure farming / cave building board, with the special building that rewarded not having any weapons.

Justin left for another round of Nappy Wars, so Josh, Heather and I were left. Josh pulled out The Capitals. I made it through the rules explanation thinking it was similar to Suburbia and Glen More, which it totally was. Unfortunately, I suck at Glen More also. Heather ended up crushing us with a massive 30+ score. Josh was somewhere in the 20s. I has -11. Yes, I did worse than if I didn't even play. Crazy!

After this, Heather and I went over to Sonic to pick up some burgers, and to grab a shake for Josh. Did I mention I like Sonic? There aren't any around my home, and it's a pretty darn good fast food joint.

Josh, Heather and I played a late night 3 player game. I think we started around 9:30om, but we were able to keep the pace up pretty quick.

We all built in completely different areas on the map, so there was little competition for spaces on the board. Heather and Josh were both newbies to the game, they knew 'how to play' but not 'how to win'.
I tried to help them along, encouraging them on moves to make to help maximize their score.

However, I was the Chaos Magicians and was able to build 3 cities. Yes, 3 cities with the Chaos Magicians. I didn't think it was possible. Might be the pinnacle of my gaming career.

After the game Heather said she had a much better idea of how she should be playing the game. Awesome! Mission accomplished.

Thursday morning
I met up with John again in open gaming. We're both looking for another game, and we're short on people. We decided on Concordia and grabbed a 'need players' kiosk. Thankfully, Heather and Josh were walking around at the same time! We pulled them in. Josh knew the game, and Heather picked it up real fast.

This game was mine, with a very heavy iron and fabric strategy. I had both scoring bonus cards, with 4 factories of each.
My problem with this game is you don't really know how you stand compared to the other players during the game. There's no 'catch the leader' mechanism, so if you start running away with the game you will win without anyone else knowing.

Either way, another fun game in the books!

After Concordia, Josh pulled out Circus Train. John left for the Egizia tournament, but 2 other folks jumped in to take his place.

We had a pretty close 5 player game. It felt close all game. Through the middle months, I was getting blown out not having any animals. But I stole Josh's elephant and Heather's big kitties in the second to last month, and was able to steal the win. Apparently slow incremental points due to having the most horses, and the most clowns in the end was enough!
I think Paul had the largest fair score in the 140s. It was pretty sweet.

Overall a fun game.

Vic and Reuven were playing in a large game of mascarade, and I walked over to see how it was going. They were finishing up (they were in a group of 6), but didn't mind me joining in (yet again) for their next game. It ended up being a couple of 7 player games of one night werewolf.
Pretty fun, but game 1 I gave away being the robber, as my neighbor heard me take the action. Whoops!
Game 2 I was a boring villager, and Nick was causing shenanigans on the other side of the table. It ended up working out for him, as he was the werewolf but exonerated as acting as the minion.
I still think the resistance is the ultimate social deduction game, but this is a good second.

What a pretty game. After the werewolf, the group split into 2 groups. Nick, his sister, Vic and I stayed behind to learn this one.
I'm not sure of this as a game. There's a lot going on, but I think too much of the final scoring is hidden information. We played for nearly 3 hours, knowing how to get a max of 7 points (from the individual score card and the public score card). However, the winning score was 11, so the winner (me) randomly lucked into 50% of the final score. Sweet? It felt hollow.

But either way, it was great company.

Friday morning
I decided to try my hand at another tournament round of brass. I love this game, and so rarely have a chance to play against competent opponents.
This game was against John, Rob (who I'd played a few games against back in 2011 and I remember being very good) and some other dude.
This game the cards didnt tell me anything, which always makes for a tough game. There was early production, but no development because as soon as i put iron on the board it was used for others to develop asap. Dudes were paying $4 for iron cubes to develop? Craziness!
Luckily no one developed ships, so I struck my claim by developing them away and building the ship on the next turn. And luckily in the rail age I was dealt Liverpool with a ship connectivity card. Thankfully I wasn't railed out of Wilkes and barrow and was able to get both age 2 ships out.
Alas, despite the heavy ship and rail start I was thrust into, John had all 3 of his level 3 and level 4 cotton mills on the board. You can't beat the deep cotton strat if no one competes in cotton. Well, maybe you can, but it didn't happen here!
I took a close second. Good enough for 4th alternate to the semis, but only 3 would be needed. Doh!

After Brass, it was time to hit the dealer room.
Apparently Russian Railroads sold out before I even got there! Doh!

I picked up a copy of Sekigahara and got the last copy of Among the Stars. Woo!

This was a 5 player game with Ed, Reuven, Vic and another dude. I was the masochist. There was a crazy time where the other dude had to lose his alien power so he could attack and get on the 5th planet. Once he did that, I played my card to put a ship on his planet and claim my 5th planet! However, Vic threw a card zap out! Curses!

I think I still ended up winning in a 4 way win? Not really sure how it ended, there was much shenanigans at the end of the game!

3 player game with Reuven and Ed. I'm so glad I picked up a copy of this! This is a fun card drafting game with a tile laying spatial aspect. Very awesome.

Reuven ended up dominating this one, but details about the game are fuzzy. Definitely a fun one though.
