So for those of you who don't know - being a boardgamer in South Africa is somewhat tough. To be fair, we can get a decent selection of games out here (although try picking up a Uwe Rosenberg game - yeesh!)

The real killer though, is price 5db If you want to pick up a copy of Archipelago, for example, it will set you back the equivalent of about $110. I know - brutal, right?

Now, sometimes it works out cheaper to order things through Amazon (even with shipping in the region of $30-50 usually). Super discount sites like CSI and Miniature Market usually have obscene shipping rates though, so that usually doesn't work either.

So, what are we to do? Well... capitalise on a visit to the USA for a wedding in Baltimore, of course!

So, before I caught the plane, I ordered a laundry list of games through Cool Stuff Inc (woohoo, free shipping!) And then, found a store called Labyrinth in Washington DC that had an awesome "roll a d20 for discount" sale on and bought even more! Yay!

What follows is the full, frighteningly lengthy tally of what I got...

As I mentioned in the intro, getting hold of Uwe Rosenberg games is, for some odd reason, one of the most difficult things in South Africa. So of course, this was the first game on my list!

I was also rather pleased that this version also includes the mini-expansion - I wasn't sure I could trust the item description on CSI

Between Ignacy Trzewiczek's blog and the amazing Robinson Crusoe, I've become convinced that I need to pick up every single game that Ignacy has ever made!

I'm also building up a fairly complete selection of Portal Games's catalogue: Robinson Crusoe, Stronghold, Theseus, Legacy and now this game - any other must-haves I'm missing?

I've been interested in playing a Stefan Feld game for some time. When I put my first CSI order through, it was between this and Bora Bora. This won for two reasons:

1. It's a little lighter and quicker, and I have plenty of long, dense games.

2. My girlfriend and I went to Bruges a little while ago and loved it!

I somehow stumbled across Tom Vasel's review of this game, and since my collection is somewhat lacking in quick, filler games, I thought I may as well try it out. You can't go too wrong for $10, right?

Plus - real time!

On to the second order!

Okay, this one DID catch my eye before Shut Up and Sit Down gave it a new lease on life, but it was always impossible to find locally, and too scarce to find online.

Luckily, the added attention this has been getting made it suddenly appear at CSI for a really good price!

As with Pret-a-Porter above, this one was all down to the designer. Mage Knight and Galaxy Trucker have made me a firm believer in Mr Vlaad Chvatil's wackiness. Reading his descriptions of the thought process behind each card and aspect of the game were the final selling points.

Okay, I am going to freely admit that this was the game I was most unsure about - for a few reasons actually

1. I mainly play 2 player with my girlfriend, or with our one regular gaming partner. Not sure if this will be great at 2/3 players.

2. I'm not sure if the heaviness and seeming lack of thematic integration will be off-putting or not.

3. It just looks - bland? The colour palette seems very bland. I want colour, and pop, and minis! (Okay, I guess there is plenty of wood instead of minis)

So - have I made a mistake? Did the hype and the game's meteoric rise up the BGG rankings fool me? How many roads must a man walk down, before you can call him a man?

Okay, on to order number 3! (I swear it doesn't go up to Order 66)

I listed Forbidden Desert first, since everything else in order 3 is just expansion material.

This seems like it will be a good co-op with a slightly shorter play time than the rest of my collection.

Other awesome things about it:

1. It comes in a tin!

2. It's a step up from Forbidden Island

3. You get to build a little flying ship piece by piece!

Okay, this geek list entry is actually for the Wave 4 ships - but for the sake of keeping this list to a single page, I've collapsed them into one item.

Z-95: Since I could literally get twice as many ships for X-wing by ordering them online, I went all out and got FOUR (for me that's a lot) of these handy little Rebel swarm ships.

TIE Defender: Got two of these. Pity about the awkward maneuvre dial, but the thought of slapping a Heavy Laser Cannon and pulling off a white K-turn makes me giddy!

TIE Phantom: Picked up 2 of these as well. Hopefully they don't ultimately prove to be meta-game breaking or un-fun to play against. Conversely, they might just be the first step in the "Rise of the Turret Weapon".

E-wing:

Got one of these - I already bought one due to my weakness and inability to wait for my trip to the US

Didn't I tell you I was a sucker for western?

Many years ago as a young(er) lad, my cousin went to Gencon and brought back a demo pack of this for me.

I was instantly in love, but could never find more packs. I went onto the website and printed out the low res images of new characters, sticking them onto round cardboard cut outs in my desperation for new material.

So, I was extremely happy to pick up all 8 Starter Packs, and all 8 Ghost Creek packs. To my dismay though, I realised the game was collectible and I'm still missing a fair amount - sadness! Most tragically, I didn't get the "Locomotive" terrain piece, which you need for the train-fighting rules included in Ghost Creek.

If any kind soul is reading this and is willing to part with "Locomotive" or the flat it comes with (or any other stuff for the game), please let me know! Reward offered!

The "gamer's" version of Lords of Waterdeep, if you believe the hype. This looks beautiful and has been getting great reviews.

It's impossible to get at home, but on my recent trip to Germany I was SURE I would find it. Alas, I could't! So, when I saw this at Labyrinth, who were running a "d20 for discount" special, I was truly powerless to resist.

So what did I get on the d20? I rolled a 15! The shopkeeper wasn;t super happy about it - but that's the way things roll... even better, my sister bought a bunch of stuff for my nephew ($100+) and she rolled a 20... nice!

So everything from Yedo downwards was had at a neat 15% discount
