FACT: Every popular game from the last 200 years owes its success to a card-carrying male model.

You may not know it, but each end every major hit in the board game world established itself using the most handsome and well known male models of the time. Without these spokesmen, games like Jenga, Twister, and even Monopoly would have been lost to the sands of time. I've dug up some of the original advertisements for the world's most popular games and posted them here for your enjoyment.

Join me on a visual trip through the racy and sometimes bizarre history of marketing the world's most successful board games.

Yes, Go has been around forever, but it really only hit the mainstream in the 1620s when Miyamoto Musashi (Heartthrob Samurai par excellence) lent his flexible form to an iconic ad first published in Shogunate Weekly.

Not every attempt at this style of games marketing was met with success.

In 1982 famed designer Steve Jackson attempted to emulate this style of advertising with one of his own games. Unfortunately, Car Wars never saw the incredible lift in sales Twister enjoyed a decade earlier thanks to Burt Reynolds. In fact, sales of the game dropped drastically as a result of this ad, which ran in the November '82 issue of Dragon Magazine.

Some manufacturers attempted to break the mold in a vain attempt to increase work for female models.

Unfortunately for the progressively minded Joker this advertising campaign was simply too far ahead of it's time and sales of Barn-Alfapet never recovered.
