This was my first GenCon.

Prior to this I had only been to two Origins and Buckeye Game Fest, which are far from the size and madness of GenCon.

It was large, it was crowded, it was stressful, it was exhausting, it was disappointing in some ways, BUT it was fun, it was exciting, it was new, it was a spectacle, it was surprising, it was an experience, and I met and spent some time with some really great people.

I would return, but I would do a lot different based on my experiences. Specifically regarding trying new games and going into the exhibit hall. The Exhibition Hall was far too crowded -- it was often difficult to navigate through the crowd blocking the way, and on the weekend it was just impossible, like a human version of an LA traffic jam; the demo games at the booths were basically always too crowded to get access to and play. I spent too much time walking around going between meeting people. I didn't get to play as much Werewolf as I wanted. I didn't get to game with a lot of people I wanted as much as I wanted. I didn't get to game as much as I wanted. But I feel I would know how to adjust my actions next time to avoid most issues.

In this list I occasionally borrow content (i.e. photos) from others, I am grateful for their posts and hope they do not mind my use of their content.

When we were driving out of my neighborhood, I told Erin she needed to turn around because I'd forgotten my "thingamajib". She refused because she said "You must be joking because if you were serious you would call it by a real name and not thingamajib." I insisted that despite calling it a "thingamajib" I was very serious. Finally I remembered and blurted out "my lanyard" and she said "OH!" and turned back to my house. Look, "lanyard" is a weird word to remember.

After leaving fairly late and driving for a couple hours, we finally made it the hotel and met up with Gurt so we could check our stuff into the room. While there may have been enough room for all of us to sleep, I contend that there was perhaps not actually enough room for all of our bags. The room was quite nice, though it quickly became a bit of a crowded mess.

The hotel was decently ritzy; it was quite a zoo -- cars could barely progress through the entrance/circle. There were a few staff members dressed up and acting like they were at a Ren-Faire and welcoming us -- I imagine the hotel was trying to seem friendly and into but to a degree it felt patronizing.

We were quite thirsty and I was starving. There was two small pitchers of "liquid" in the lobby with cups, a red liquid and a blue liquid. They tasted like water with bad food-colouring.

After being famished for several hours, our group finally was heading out for food but couldn't decide where everyone should be taken. I was in no mood to wait in any hour long line for a table; I just wanted food "now". Yet the group agreed to go into Steak and Shake, a restaurant that I only previously knew as the place only stoners went at 3 am to eat - not a place anyone desired to visit at normal dining hours, and wait in its moderately sized line. We were split at two tables and given menus. After a wait, our orders were finally taken. What felt like well over an hour later some peoples' food finally started to slowly be brought out. When my chicken sandwich finally arrived, it was pretty poor and unappetizing even for how hungry I was. The fries were pretty terrible considering this was supposed to be a burger place. As for the milkshakes we had ordered before ordering our burgers/sandwiches? Those did not start to appear until over 20 minutes after everyone had been finished eating their entree. My milkshake wasn't even fully blended. I absolutely would have stiff the bill and just walked out had I not been with a group and others had not used credit cards for their portion of the bill.

tl;dr; I will never return to a Steak and Shake. Didn't help that I immediately felt queasy after the meal.

After randomly running into a newly arrived Alan and Randy with Clyde at the convention center after handing off KtO, we headed over to the Omni Severin Hotel bar to meet up with other Boomers (Gary, Natalie, Rochelle, Jeffrey, Cody, Borgoto).

I only had two shots. I would have had more to drink, but the selection was paltry and their prices absurd.

After several redeals due to botched set-ups, we began a 10(?)p game of Avalon. Evil won despite imo having an obv spy in their Oberon and Mordred. Borgoto: Oberon, Randy: Mordred, Gary: Morgana.

Returning to the convention center, we settled in the super comfy chairs outside Hall K and played a game of Werewolf.

I drew Brutal Hunter. Clyde: lone wolf, Alan/Rochelle: werewolves, Shawcerer, Tanner: Seer.

Alan died on first lynch when Borgoto chose to kill him by leaving him standing in a strange sudden-death form of lynching.

Clyde and then Rochelle eventually followed in death after trying to leave Tanner alive forever for some form of FUD.

After waking on Thursday, I headed over to meet BT at Embassy Suites where he had just finished not having breakfast after the frustration of having his omelet screwed up twice in a row.

He broke out WDPTAAL to introduce it to his roomies Joe Babbit and Lee. We played a couple rounds of it before leaving for breakfast elsewhere.

After grabbing coffee and pastries, we headed to the AEG area and I helped BT learn Pagoda.

We thankfully had to cut the game short and it was incomplete, but imo I was definitely going to lose. I immediately disliked it. Later after some games played, BT informed me that he was not a fan either.

It is a 2p only game that utilizes hand management to play cards of different colours to build columns and roofs of those colours for points based on what level/story the structures are built on. You have to try and consider what cards your opponent has in his hand and showing in front of him (as well as their abilities from previous builds), and make sure you don't set them up for easy points, while still trying to build for points yourself.

The below image is apparently what I missed outside the Exhibition Hall by choosing to accompany BT instead of trying to go to the opening hours of the Hall.

Thursday morning, the Exhibition Hall was opening for the con! ...and we were at the other end of the center grouping up for our True Dungeon. I knew basically nothing going in and have never done anything like this before, nor even played an RPG before.

We did "Into the Viper's Nest". I chose Ranger and my items were apparently so bad that the coach just gave me stats of "common basic Ranger items" on the master sheet to boost my stats to a playable level. I didn't really get the rules of the game, but at least I was pretty good at the shuffle boarding.

This was the "puzzle-oriented" dungeon run. But honestly, the puzzles did not interest me. I thought they seemed somewhat random and arbitrary, or just boring.

(Take the one where you have to make symbols in the sand and then damage yourself repeatedly to fill them with blood. Are you serious? There was no mystery or challenge to that puzzle, it was very quickly and easily obvious what needed to be done, but it was a giant pain in the ass that took forever and was really messy. Actually physically making the symbols deep enough in the sandbox, ugh what an annoyance.)

And then the damage was just silly. Not only did the puzzles keep harshly damaging the whole group and also individuals for touching the wrong pieces in the room, but the combat engagements were absurd as well. I was a bit confused, if we were on a puzzle-oriented run, then what was with the staff just randomly rolling die and constantly dealing huge double-digit damage chunks at our team's healers before we even knew what was going on. We entered the run with Medusa and the staff member apparently just dealt huge damage to everyone -- I didn't even get in the room yet or ever even see Medusa, and then he immediately rolled a die and straight up killed our healer by striking him for 18 dmg.

Finally, the second to last room required us to have perfectly memorized all the random weird symbols that had appeared in each room one or two at a time. It wasn't that we hadn't anticipated needing to know these symbols and words, but they were such strange symbols and so many were too similar. To make it worse, some of the signs that were supposed to teach these symbols were so poorly (not at all) lit that I never even saw them. 4 of our team were dead going into this room, but it wouldn't have mattered because there was no real mechanism to tell how many we had correct and whether we were improving or making it worse. I could see the giant viper that was in the last room beyond us over the curtain, but we never got there because that uncreative room just killed us all for not getting the symbols all matched.

This experience made me regretful that I had signed up for both dungeons. As a general experience I was glad to have done it, but I didn't want to do it again, especially for the expensive price. As a dungeon (retroactively rated based on having done both dungeons), I think this was a somewhat poor dungeon and they could have done better designing it. But that's just my opinion.

Ran into Scout in the Exhibit Hall Thursday afternoon and both of us were looking to try and demo anything we could find. We found Contagion to be open for a couple players and looking to start.
(For purposes, I shall name unknown strangers as "Bob" if I didn't catch their name.)
Final scores: Bob 23, Phil 23, Bob 31, DeMo 27, Scout 23

Not sure how I feel about this game. I knew it was an area influence game going in. But it had this strange feel that there were more cities to influence (infect) than made sense for the number of players? And players were constricted by the colour of the cards they drew in terms of what cities were effective for them to infect. Not sure if there are dominant strategies regarding "evolving" your virus, such as rushing to increase your card-draw rate since cards are used as the currency for influencing (infecting) and evolving (increasing the power of your actions). Scout rushed to increase her draw rate and tied for last, but all scores were fairly close. The game was long, and I definitely think that the max players are too high, and people were taking too long to think and play. I suspect that we were sitting there for well over an hour for a game that is supposed to play in 30 min. There was also the issue of Bob1 making bad plays that set up the next player for easy victory points, but Phil kept ignoring them and doing something foolish instead, meaning that Bob2 was able to reap the easy rewards and win. Sitting on the other side of Bob1 was really frustrating for Scout and me, who continually shared shocked and frustrated looks after Bob1 and Phil's plays. The theme is actually well integrated into the game.

I think it might be a good easy to learn, light area influence game that plays in under an hour for 3-4 players. I would probably avoid playing with more than 4 again as I suspect 4 is the ideal number for it. I could also definitely seeing it being too light and short as an area influence game for some people, who want a more strategic intense game when involved in that mechanic.

During our Contagion game Caitlin came by and waited for Scout to be done playing so they could demo something together. Joseph then also came by and when Contagion finally ended we all proceeded looking for something to play. We found a table at the Asmodee booth open and I was shocked and excited to see it was Madame Ching, which I did not think would be at GenCon because its publisher was not there.

Final scores: Scout 20, Caitlin 12, Joseph 16, DeMo 27

I think the woman who came over to explain the game was confused on several points, which sounded wrong to me when she mentioned them. It is on the lighter end of the scale. But I think with an understanding of how the game plays, there is strategy there. And I suspect that the 2p version where each player controls two ships is more interesting and strategic. Also I love the art. I almost bought this when I was buying things in the hall, and I've considered buying it since I returned home.

Somewhat unrelated was the horrible issue of someone (I think it might actually have been the designer of Cash 'n Guns) suddenly climbing on top a chair and blowing a whistle super loud right in our ears with no warning. OMG, that was so upsetting and startling. And then he proceeded to yell for a couple minutes trying to get players to completely fill his Cash 'n Guns game at one of the tables. He went so far as to yell threats including threatening to yell "Game of Thrones" spoilers, which then immediately did spoil. The 4 of us were utterly determined not to play Cash 'n Guns with him out of spite because of his whistle and yelling that we felt should have come with a warning beforehand.

After finishing our game of Madame Ching, we walked past the Funforge booth and saw open tables for demos. I think everyone was interested in trying Samurai Sword because of the designer and art and hype.

A staff member walked us through it a bit and explained the game. There were some points that were confusing, however, and we didn't really catch and couldn't find in the rulebook. That fact plus the appearance of the game being sort of too easy and just about placing random cards we drew soured the attitude of the group, and they lost interest in figuring out the issues of how to proceed. So after 1.5 of the game's 3 rounds, we left.

I think the game is better than how it appeared in our demo. We were messing a couple minor things up, and we did not fully understand the rules. But I think as the game progresses, it gets exponentially more difficult, which does force players to decide where to place cards and when support powers need to be used to help the team out. I can imagine trying to set the team up to trigger their special powers without getting knocked out is the real challenge to master here. However, I think it's highly likely I trade this game simply because it seems intended for larger groups and I usually only have small numbers available to me.

Thursday evening we, with great difficulty, found everyone in one of the halls trying to set up a huge group game of The Last Banquet, which required the moving and bringing together of many tables and chairs. We had 23/24? people, which despite the game supposedly going up to 25 was waaay too many in my opinion. Organizing the game felt messy and the play was worse.

When the role cards were going to be handed out, I was offered first pick of a random card. I chose the one that had a cute cat in the picture, a witch or something. But then the card was taken back from me so that the role cards could be randomly dealt to each team as a stack -- totally pointless since we handed them out randomly anyways and my pick had been random. I am still upset about the theft of my witch and cat. So I had no desire to role-play the card I did end up with after that happened.

In terms of play, I felt the King was playing for Blue team to win over Red team even though Blue team was also trying to kill him and make him lose. There were so many people and we just sort of stood there waiting for movement to result in us taking our turn, which felt totally random. And then once you used your power/movement that was that and then you sat and waited forever with no remaining sway on the game for the round to end. Then eventually the King sat himself down next to the Blue Assassin by sitting in between 2 Blues and then thankfully the game finally ended.

I would not replay this game. There is not enough here to compel me or make me feel like there are good strategies to control the outcome, and the waiting and doing nothing is absurdly painful and boring. I felt completely disconnected from our game and was talking to multiple players who wanted it to end and also commiserated with my desire for everyone to just abandon it.

While most people wanted to go to Food Trucks, there was a vocal but small contingent led by Clyde that wanted to go to a sit-down meal. Specifically Clyde had heard about and wanted Mexican. So I joined Clyde, Joseph, Owén, and Elaur in walking 2 blocks past the food trucks and around the corner to El Rodeo, which had no wait but good food and good service. I would definitely recommend it as a food option during the convention.

2 very large and hard to organize games of 2R1B outside Hall K.
I was Blue something and then Engineer. I think we lost both or only won the first.
The games were a bit big and lacking the main roles that really get me excited. I was probably also too tired.

Was annoying because we were 10 of us sitting at a long table and I was at the end; I could rarely hear anything being said by the 4 or 5 people at the opposite end of the table, and no one was addressing the 3 of us (Curt, me, and a new guy) at our end of the table -- so I was totally disconnected from the discussions and the game.

We had 2 misdeals I think? I was dealt Spy every time! Which was quite upsetting. The one misdeal was actually just people trying to break the game with the weird "didn't playtest this" rule alteration that people had to vote as pairs and if the pair disagreed then it's vote was counted as a no-vote.

One of the rule alterations included handing out mysterious placards that said "Werewolf" and "Spy" on them and a mystery sealed note. I was the "werewolf", I wanted to get the on the mission claiming that I might be able to eat a spy if there's one on the mission, but despite saying he would put me on the mission my brother betrayed his word and his honour and cut me from the mission. You jerk, abi.
One of the next rules involved no one being allowed to talk but having to use these happy-face and sad-face pictures to point at people.
Spies won in 4 missions, which means I won. Despite Caitlin being an obvious laughing spy, she still got on another mission to end it.

People went to the Ram bar, which is terrible in my opinion. The kitchen and the bar both close way to early during a convention, but their real sin is serving warm/cold garbage coffee.

Anyway, I ordered coffee and then followed that with 2 shots of vodka. Something about having that coffee first made those 2 shots feel like 6 shots. I can have 4 shots without feeling it, but my head was actually spinning at the Ram. Weird.

We played WDPT: Legacies several times splitting the deck in half to have two games going at a time. This is a game that is always hard to remember who won and how. But it was pretty entertaining.
Then some people, who know who they are, played "What Does my Forehead taste like?" and "Who's Fist Am I Licking?" ...yeah, they'd had a few drinks.

Late late night now, the bar closed and so people returned to the hall. Erin got out Bang the Dice Game. yuk And it was started on the claim that it's fun and quick. It is not. Certainly not with a full game and with people that tired and inebriated.
I was an Outlaw and the Sheriff and Deputies won after a couple Deputies basically meta-cleared themselves by reading their role card. Everyone bluffed Deputy and so no one was really wailing on the Sheriff, but just attacking each other claiming "I'm a Deputy, not you".

During the game, a GenCon staff guy from Indy who was a Freemason and seemed like a pretty cool guy came over for a bit to make sure we weren't getting too rowdy and no one was too drunk or going to fall asleep in the hall.

I left after this game because I wanted to get at least a little bit of sleep. No idea what the rest of people did, but I hear they stayed up until dawn.

Met the mighty Gary in the Exhibit Hall on Friday morning and he kindly agreed to demo some stuff with me because he also wanted to find games to demo in the hall.

We went over to the Blue Orange booth and I suggested trying Battle Sheep and Niya.

I understood the rules of Battle Sheep, I'm not sure from when or where. But Gary didn't fully understand them until after a couple turns of our mini game against one of the Blue Orange staff. I immediately cornered and cut off the majority of Gary's sheep. Sorry, Gary! And then cut off several of the staffer's for the win.

I think this is an excellent abstract game. It's quick and simple, but strategic and requires a little bit of forethought and prioritized planning. The components are extremely high-quality. The player tokens are thick, solid discs each with a sheep of the player's colour with a different and amusing art. Recommend!

Then Gary and I worked together as a single player against the Blue Orange staffer at Niya. We went second and together put him in a position where he could not stop us from winning. Credit goes to Gary here, I think.

A small and very quick 2p strategy abstract filler where you try to be the first to get 4-tiles in a row or in a square.

We decided to demo something at Mayfair and found Villainy open. 2 strangers sat down with us. Took a bit for a guy to explain the game to us. There was some confusion about the rules at first. The two strangers seemed to think the game was very complicated and confusing. I thought the rules were very straight-forward and easy. However, I was disappointed by the gameplay and the game felt very cluttered with stuff. It was mildly amusing, but seemed sort of repetitive and semi-out of your hands due to some of the aspects.
Gary had a podcast to get to, so he handed his seat over to Irina when she arrived to grace us with her presence. The two strangers really just wanted to be done with the game and leave, but I wanted the staffer to explain the endgame mechanics before the game was abandoned and took forever to finish with the other table to come over to us. The two strangers were staying because they wanted their Mayfair-ribbons. We were all given "Wood" ribbons and a Villainy henchman pin. The pin was cool, but unfortunately I lost it the next day during True Dungeon.

I was pretty interested in this game, but after demoing it, I would not consider buying it. Not quite the make and tell your own Villain story game that I was hoping for. Just missing that special something.

Irina and I continued browsing down the aisles of the hall and sat down to demo at Floodgate's booth. Gary and Natalie had recommended Legacy, and truthfully I had been interested in seeing it for a long time, but had never really learned anything about it other than "time-travel!"

We played a 2p half-game taught very clearly and well by the lone staffer that had abandoned for their lunch break. So he had to multitask talking to people in between explaining the game to us. There were a couple sticky points that we missed that would have changed our play and planning, but it was quite interesting and fun regardless. The game has a great feel to it. The theme and art are pretty great. The rules are simple enough, play cards and pay costs with cards, move in time but only backwards not forwards, use influence to gain points at the end of each time-travel loop. Both of us enjoyed it. I was sort of disappointed when I remembered we were only allowed to play a partial (demo) game; I wanted to keep going.

At the same time I wanted to demo their new Epic Resort game, but all the spaces were filled and didn't want to wait. In fact, we saw that Caitlin was at one of the tables demoing it with Mark.

As we were walking back around the booth, we decided to demo Floodgate's new silly "out-think your opponent" filler, King of Clubs.

We just played one round of it. Irina destroyed me, she won all but the smallest club. You have a hand of dancers with skill rated from 1-6. Then 5 random dance clubs of different notoriety are placed on the table. You send one of your dance group face-down to each club and then flip to see who won the dance contest at each club and gets the most notoriety dance points. Then to actually score for winning a round you have to do a dance. Silly. But Irina did a big hop, twirl, and curtsy.

We passed by the booth of whatever publisher makes Ascension and Star Realms. Irina was more interested in demoing Ascension than Star Realms based on art/theme, but having played Ascension before and having heard that Star Realms is better I suggested the latter.

I do kind of agree with Irina that the art isn't really pretty and didn't do much to draw me in. It is solid, good, space-themed consistent space art, but I do think it is lacking a je ne sais quoi. The gameplay seems good, you may say that there is still the issue of a really great card may appear in the auction display for your opponent and none you really want appear for you, but I think the luck will balance out. And it does not have the issue that Ascension has where it is very hard to get the cards you want that can really form a deck with combos and synergy, nor does it have the problem of the beasts/monsters in Ascension that can really offer big lucky swings in points. I thought it was pretty decent, whereas I did not like Ascension.

At first it seemed like Irina was going to destroy me, but eventually my intended combos came together as I filtered my deck out and I turned the game around and quickly knocked her out of it. I went with and tend to think that in deck-builders the key are cards that combo to let you trash cards and draw extra cards.

The great Antoine Bauza was scheduled to be at the Funforge Booth signing games. I noticed I had just enough time to perhaps get over there, so I did and he was actually staying and signing past the scheduled time by this point. While in line I saw people with Ghost Stories, Hanabi, and 7 Wonders rulebook for him to sign, and I was very regretful that I hadn't thought to bring my Ghost Stories or 7 Wonders for him to sign, and only had Samurai Spirit. I saw him drawing fireworks inside people's Hanabi boxes! Bauza is one of the best. Easily. No contest. (...okay, maybe that's just my opinion.)
