As avid players of boardgames, we will occasionally have games leave our collections. They may be lost over time, or sold, or traded away. For the lucky among us, we may have an even more creative story than that (launched into space?). This list is dedicated to the games I've sold or traded away, and is my attempt to chronicle these departures and attempt to explain why. It is not my attempt to slander or denigrate any of the games on this geek list, or fans of any games on this list, as everyone has their own tastes, and there are fans of (almost) every game out there. Plus a lot of work has gone into development of all the games on this list, and I don't wish to stomp all over that effort. That said, sometimes games just don't fit with a certain person or audience. Another major factor in my collection is space constraints, so a game has to really be a hit with at lest some people I regularly game with (not necessarily everyone) in order to stay in my collection. As a result, some really good games have left my collection, and some games that I alone loved have left my collection. In some cases, I do regret these departed games; in other cases, I have not looked back. I have tried to list these all in chronological order, thinking this would allow for some sort of self-reflection on my evolving tastes in games…not sure if that worked, but what ya gonna do?

Feel free to add any games of your own to the list, but please try to be respectful of the designers and any fans of the games themselves.

One of my first purchases, this is also my first trade. I originally thought this would fill the niche in my gaming group of a Catan for camping, as all my other friends had the base game. No such luck really. In addition, for my own use I didn't like the inflexibility in the board, with the number locations and the central desert being fixed. In reality, Catan itself was just as easy to pack along on any road trip. I can't remember if I traded this away or sold it.

Good game, and I think this would be a great family game (of course, thinking this way with a growing family), so I may reacquire it one day (assuming it stays in print). I traded this away early in my board game collecting - this may have been my first ever math trade, so perhaps it was a question of providing value in a game to get value in a game? I can't think of any specific reason why the game didn't click with me, but at the moment we're pretty happy with Coloretto for the basic concepts of this game, without the added complexity.

A poor investment on my part, as by the time I had purchased this our group had moved beyond The Settlers of Catan into other board games; never even found the table.

This was probably my first lesson that SdJ winners aren't always my cup of tea. I was very excited on acquisition, but the game lasted only a few plays before wearing out its welcome. I love the setup and the concept of the waterfall realized through plastic discs, but over time it became a novelty unable to compensate for the gameplay beneath. For me, I didn't really enjoy the movement point system of playing cards, as it was very inflexible when you had to wait 5 turns to play the token you desperately needed now. I suppose that is the whole point of this system, but it's just not something I like in a game. I'd rather have a set number of action/movement points to use in a turn, or subject myself to a die roll where I have a probabilistic chance of getting the result I need.

Good game, but I found it a little too similar to Pandemic to have both in my collection (though I would ultimately trade both away). However, the ultimate parting shot was my wife, who has taken the stance that she doesn't really like co-op games ("I need there to be a winner"…man I love her!). Now that I have a kid, I may look to reacquiring this as he gets older, when co-ops may serve a purpose in teaching strategic thinking skills, but Forbidden Desert appeals to me more of the games presently on the market.

I'm not the biggest fan of Lost Cities as a game (though for getting people to the gaming table, I think it's fantastic), and I thought this would completely replace it when me and the wife wanted a quick card game. I really liked it, but it just didn't strike her fancy. I don't know if I ever got a straight answer out of her, but my guess is that it had too much logic/thinking for a "light game." That said, I'm not convinced I gave it enough of a chance to stick before getting rid of it. I also should have tried it out with other gaming partners, but as 90% of my 2-player games are with my spouse, her lack of interest was a major factor in its departure. Still, this is one of the few that I do regret getting rid of.

I think Bang! would have had greater success if I had a larger, more consistent group of people at my gaming nights. Most of the time there weren't enough people to bring this out, and when there was there was usually 1 or 2 newbies to the game that I had to teach the game to before we could get rolling, making the games drag on and preventing us from really getting into the complex strategy of this otherwise good game.

My wife and I only ever played this game once, and we both found it a bit arduous and "mathy." We both felt obligated to give it another chance, as it was a gift from a friend, but we also dreaded bringing it back to the table. Ultimately we decided that if both were that resistant to playing this game again, it wasn't for us (life is too short force oneself to try board games they don't like?).

I picked this up on the secondhand market along with its sequel Echoes of the Past. Tried it a few times with my wife, and we found that our enjoyment of the gameplay did not justify the learning curve. I think it may have stemmed from our difficulty in learning the rules (we certainly screwed up the first game or two), but this is an important factor in my decision as to what games to keep. With limited time, we don't rotate through games very quickly, so a games rules has to be easy to remember (or just that damn good!) to stick in my collection. Bottom line: at this game length, there are other games we enjoy far more.

I don't remember how this game ever entered my collection (I think my wife did it), but at the time I was NOT a fan of luck based games, which I saw this too be. I did not like the fact that you had to commit to playing a card two turns in advance, as this game was far too chaotic and often players would be left with a useless card by the time it came up (e.g. if card X requires a bunny, and yours have all been killed off); I tried to house rule this out, but no-one would buy it. At the end of the game, it was a complete lottery as to who won, and it was usually not the case that the person with the most carrots won the game. This is fine if that's what you like in a game, or if it's a shorter game, but if I'm going to be playing a game for 1-2 hours, I'd like the final result to better reflect how each player has played the game.

Another casualty of my phase of culling, the few times we played this we didn't find too much strategy in the gameplay. Most of the time, the choice of card to play was far to obvious, leading to a bit of a mechanical feel in the gameplay. Again, with limited time to play games, there are others we enjoy more.

A casualty of our limited time at the table. Nostalgia alone was the reason this lasted in our collection this long, as there are other card games we enjoy a lot more. If pressed for a reason, I think it was a little luck-based when you're sitting around unable to do a thing because you have a) a speed limit; b) a flat tire; or c) some other disaster.

Wonderful game, traded away in a moment of weakness because of a wife who doesn't like it. My biggest regret. I love the chess-like adversarial nature of the game, and the multiple layers of logic one must undertake in trying to hide or discover Jack. I will almost certainly be purchasing this again in the future, or one of its spinoffs, once I can assure myself of a worth opponent.

This is a great little card game for what it is, and I probably should have kept it in my collection. That said, we did play it quite a bit when we first got it, so at the time I donated it we the game had sort of worn out its welcome. The reason I say I should have kept it is because it's a short, quick vicious game - something every player craves from time to time.

As a huge Monty Python fan, this game was great for many laughs. It's also a perfect example of a random, chaotic game done well in my opinion - short so that a surprise victory against the flow of play doesn't aggravate too many people, because of the minimal time investment and/or potential for an immediate rematch. It went over well with fans of the movies/series, but most others just sat there politely, not understanding the inside jokes. This was the primary reason for its ultimate demise, but I still get some flack from the wife for trading it away, so perhaps I'll reacquire it at some point in the future.

Good game, and to this date the best co-op I've ever played. That said, I haven't played that many because co-ops are generally not very popular among my friends and family, particularly my wife who (as mentioned above) wants to see a winner out of every game. As a result, space constraints pushed me to sell this to make room for other games in my collection. At some point I may consider reacquiring, but it didn't scream "Wow" at me when I played, which leads me to believe if I ever re-enter the co-op genre there may be better options out there for me.

The attractive theme of ancient Egypt wasn't enough to preserve this game in my collection. To give credit where due, I really enjoyed the game and appreciated the complex decisions each turn; there is an amazing amount of strategy in this game, deciding when to draw a tile or force an auction, and the tried-and-true method of bleeding your opponent out of their suns. If my collection space were bigger this probably would have never left, but I found a (for me) worthy substitute in Ra: The Dice Game and am - as much as hate to admit it - a prisoner of space as far as game storage, so this one did not make the cut. When I do have an itch to play, I will pull out the iOS app and have a go.

Traded away due to space constraints, and on the belief that one day I will purchase the expansion pack that also has India, or Nordic Countries to replenish my 2-3 player map options for this game. I think I would lean towards Nordic countries based on what I've heard, as I was not really fond of the "looseness" of the Switzerland map; I found the city-to-country and country-to-country cards too low-risk/high-reward based on the rules for completion and penalties for not completing. That and it was pretty easy to fish the destination deck near the end of the game if you had 2-3 countries connected, and almost always be guaranteed points.

This was one of many games during a phase of culling (due mainly to me having acquired too many games too rapidly). The primary reason for trading Galaxy Trucker away, if I can say this without sounding too cocky, was the competitive imbalance. I was unbeatable, and it frustrated my wife to no end, far more than I'd ever seen her with any other game (usually, I'm the one with the temper). Maybe one day I'll look into reacquiring this, as I have many fond memories playing this game...

Interesting premise, but I found that with smaller numbers the game was too slow (unless we played multiple turns each), and with larger players a little too chaotic (at least it was short, though…). Still, I can't say we ever ended the game thinking "that was fun, let's do it again." I guess it just fell flat with my group, as there are other games we'd far rather play at every player count.

This was one of the rare games that was a bigger hit with the wife than me. For me, the arbitrary starting conditions (give your opponent 3 random tiles) was not my favourite design choice; only rarely were any of these ingredients useful when you finally picked up your recipes (or on subsequent pickups), and just cluttered up your hand. I would have far preferred picking the recipes first and taking turns picking up ingredients from scratch up to the hand limit, skipping the initial "hand-seeding" step altogether. That doesn't mean I wouldn't play because, hey, the wife liked it. Eventually though, she started to enjoy other games more, and this sat unplayed for months on end. It was very difficult for her to keep pointing out my ever-growing collection while insisting I hang onto this seldom played game, so eventually I got the OK to trade it away.

Received in a sweetener in a Math Trade, and got a few plays out of it, but it ultimately got traded away in preference for other dice games in my collection (Ra: The Dice Game, Yahtzee, Qwixx), as there wasn't enough game in this one for our tastes. I enjoyed the creativity in the combo cards though, as there were some very interesting (and difficult!) ones to strive for.
