Played by: Gordon, Gareth, Steve, Kev and Adam (not that Adam the other one)

A very entertaining outing of Dead of Winter - this time the Colony needed non-starter item medical supplies (10 of them) to succeed in their main objective which we succeeded at but still contrived to lose the game despite there being no 'betrayer'.

Some game highlights:-

- Gordon's truck driver having to shoot dead his zombie father on the way to scavenge much needed petrol, but then being stabbed to death by a deranged women, but not before contributing valuable food to the colony.

- An epic search for a lost small girl despite Kev voting to forget about her.

- Steve managing to act suspiciously enough to virtually convince Gareth and I to call for a vote to exile him, despite him being completely innocent.

- One of Adam's characters refusing to run off naked through the woods with Kodiak Colby who had just saved them from a zombie bear.

- Our downfall was two crises that we didn't try to solve as we thought we could handle the consequent zombies - but we couldn't and the horde rolled over enough of the main colony to lower morale to zero and end the game despite the fact that we had the medical supplies we needed.

Great fun though - I think this co-op/possible traitor game manages to solve one of the main drawbacks of co-op games in that it doesn't just feel like a group-think problem solver. Your individual objectives do dictate independent play more so than in games like Robinson Crusoe. It also plays in a reasonable time frame and is pretty quick to set up and teach as well.

Daniel had arrived carrying two games, his current favourite, Navegador was first to get played.

Daniel did a great job explaining all the rules and also offered some sage advise on strategies and pitfalls, much to everyone's relief (I had played before but many years ago, Roy and Andrew had not).

I was determined to follow an "exploration/colonisation" strategy to certain victory. Alas, it did not work. I never seemed to have enough of everything but had missed the benefits that shipyards and especially cathedrals give you. Next time I will not be so foolish....

Roy did much the same but REALLY focussed on gold colonisation whereas I spread my influence a wee bit. At one stage, making so much money from gold, it looked like Roy would runaway with the game.

Andrew did a bit of most stuff, although did try to go down a factory path, Daniel focussed of factories matching Roy's impressive gold colonisation. I think Andrew did not help me by not diving into salt factories, but I did also diversify a bit too, looking to make bonuses at the end of the game.

Andrew and Daniel also did very well with Cathedrals and Shipyards. Lesson learnt there for next time, thanks.

Daniel's experience told throughout although I think the rest of us did give it a good go and I think that anyone of us could have been 2nd/3rd or 4th.

Final position/scores ratings were:

Daniel 131
*Roy 104 -
JimS 100
*AdrewB2 90 -

A quick round played by Daniel and Jim while others finished off their games.

This is a very clever wee card game that plays especially well with two players and really should see more table time.

Jim won by a few points.

After lunch, with the groups re-aligning slightly, given Jim's dislike for "themed" games (see, I can be polite) and Gordon's dislike for "point salad Euro's", a compromise was found in the guise of Daniel's other "game of the moment", Automobile.

Roy had not played before and both Gordon and I had but did not recall the experience joyfully (not sure what ailed Gordon, but I recalled it was more an exercise in spreadsheet accounting than gaming - for some this is a bonus (Scott, JamesF, I am thinking of you guys!shake))

Daniel did another top job explaining the game, some strategy tips and answering questions.

I think all of us made mistakes, some of them quite big, but as in Navegador, Daniel's experience told throughout although I think the rest of us did give it a good go and I think that anyone of us could have been 2nd/3rd or 4th. Indeed, had I not been blasé about how many mid price cars to produce (producing the maximum rather than calculating a likely outcome) I could have won; but instead I wasted money producing cars no one wanted - British Leyland could have offered me a job.....! laugh

Final results were:

Daniel 5400
JimS 5330
*Roy 3860 -
Gordon 3350

[Look - a rating from me for a Martin Wallace game that gets above 4! Whatever next?]

A few rounds played by Jim and Daniel. Jim's early lead (scoring 3 in the first end) was eaten away over the next few rounds by a combination of clever use of the Totems by Daniel and some terrible flicking by Jim.

Silly, light hearted, quick fun.
