I've been playing board games my whole life, but I really got into designer board games about two years ago. I've bought one game per month since then, and my collection has slowly grown. Of the ~45 games in my collection, as well as ones I've played online, here are my top 15:

15. One of my first designer game purchases (not counting Settlers of Catan)Super thematic fire-fighting coop game. Unfortunately, my wife is not a big fan. Luckily for me, this is a perfect solo game, and I enjoy playing it so much that I even bought most of the expansion boards. I can't recommend this enough as a solo game.

14. We have played several deckbuilding games including Dominion and Ascension, but this one is by far our favorite. Streamlined and easy to get into, it is the perfect filler for tired nights. We really need to get a new deck box though, since the original one is practically falling apart.

13. The best social deduction game, period. I dislike Werewolf/Mafia and most other games like it (the Resistance is OK), but this game has distilled the best parts of them while getting rid of the bad parts. This game is the perfect filler for groups of 4-5. Looking forward to seeing how the expansion will change the gameplay.

12. For a good part of this year, I've been away from home on business. Because of this, my wife and I played a lot of games on Board Game Arena and other similar sites. This game was a highlight for us, and I've been considering picking up the cardboard version at some point. Incredible two-player worker placement (we need more of these kinds of games!).

11. Engine building in it's purest form. While it is pretty dry and thinky, it also can have some pretty tense moments while you're competing for cards and bonuses. Also, makes a great gateway game for those who are not afraid of more cerebral experiences.

10. I knew I would love this game from the moment I read about it. I picked up the Anniversary edition as soon as I could, and have played it many times since. However, my wife was not as enamored with the game as me (she doesn't like her precious ship getting blown up), though since the release of the ipad app, she has been playing it more and is currently a little addicted to it.

9. My wife's favorite game by a landslide. I also love this game, though my wife's passion for it has made playing against her more and more painful each time (she's really, really good at it). Still, it is probably still the best designed CCG/LCG out there and we will probably be playing it for years to come.

8. This is another game that we played a lot on BGA the last year or so. I love the gear mechanics and how everything fits together so neatly. I will definitely be looking to pick up an actual copy of this game at some point.

7. Of all the games on my list, this one has the most pure fun. Monopoly be damned, this is the game families should be playing. That said, this game is definitely not too deep, and can be prone to luck. However, despite this, I've never had a game where I felt I was cheated out of a win.

6. Russian Railroads was our introduction to the "point salad". After playing this game for the first time, we immediately played again (something we rarely do). At one point, this was my #1 game, but it has been since eclipsed by Felds.

5. Probably the heaviest game in my collection, Dungeon Petz is a wonder, charming worker placement/puzzle game. Though it is really fiddly, it is a real joy to play. I haven't tried out the expansion, though from the looks of it, it might make my brain explode.

4. Despite most of our games of this being played on BGA, we first played the cardboard version before we played this online. This is my favorite card game by far, and still remains strong today, even though it doesn't get as many plays as before. On a different note, I really wish they would put out a colorblind-friendly version of this at some point.

3. Our first Feld! My wife and I fell instantly in love with this game, and it replaced Russian Railroads as our go-to euro game. This game is a classic, and will never leave our collection. Its so hard to describe what makes this game so good, and its definitely one that you have to play to understand.

2. Both my wife and I love the Foundation series by Issac Asimov. This is basically that story in a box. This game is so masterfully designed, so sleek and easy to play. Even with two players, this game has entertained us to no end. I'm really hoping to find a couple other people to play this with (though I think we may need a bigger table!). I also am planning on picking up the expansion at some point, since it looks like it adds some amazing stuff.

1. Though my wife prefers Castles of Burgundy, my favorite Feld game, as well as my current favorite game of all time is Bora Bora. I'm amazed at how interconnected the mechanics are in this game and how dynamic it is as a whole. This is a game where focusing on one area will not necessarily win, and it is important to adjust as need be to each situation. That's not to say that it's a tactical game, as long-term planning is essential. Aside from the gameplay, I think this may be the most beautiful game in my collection (strange, since it's a Feld game). Absolutely love it.
