I've just started up a new term of teaching Intro Biology to undergraduates here, and it's always a source of both joy and some frustration. For frustration, I have two lectures of ~400 students each (not the best atmosphere for teaching); and there are the emails. But the joy is that I =love= biology, and I think the subject is truly exciting and wonderful. It's my opportunity to try to relate that to the students, and to broaden their knowledge; and usually at least a few of them get it - very rewarding!

So, my general question regards Science! - as I'm too involved in it to have a truly broad perspective. Are you (and/or any members of your family) particularly interested in the sciences? If so, what subjects are most interesting? Or, has it always been boring or a bit of a drag, and can you offer any reasons why?

I was just getting back into gaming when Dominant Species was released. The theme was so clearly closely tied to my career interest that it was pretty much a required acquisition.

Are there any themes in games that tie in so closely to your life in some way (career, location, etc.) that they've already 'pre-sold' you when they were released? Or, do you prefer game themes that are disconnected in some way, giving some entry into alternative interests that aren't a part of your life?

I think it's probable that this question has been posed before, but maybe the angle in this one is to see whether family preferences might also be linked to something in life.

That is, are there any themes that your family is particularly fond of? I think it'd be perhaps most interesting to hear what connections kids in your family might have to game themes...

This past weekend was our local, small con (the Just a Game Con) - and I took my daughter for the first time. She had a great time, and was a very gracious player; listened to learn several new games; and seemed to have a good time. And both my son & I also enjoyed it, too. Chances for trying several new games - of which I think I liked Citadels best - I think also enjoyed by my son. But my daughter mostly talked about Terror in Meeple City afterward - the opportunity to tear down a city as part of a game was pretty attractive!

But, I'll also mention that I purchased Martian Dice, more or less on a whim, looking for an inexpensive dice game at the end of the day on Saturday - here Martians was chosen by the kids over both Zombies & Cthulhu (I'm fine with this!). And we've played it 5 times in 3 days now - it's (of course) not the greatest game in the world, but it's fast and easy and there are some decisions. We (including my pretty-much-non-gamer wife) even played it while waiting for our order at our local pizza place!

So, an unusually great week of gaming for me to report:

Martian Dice 5x
Cthulhu Dice 2x
Zombie Dice
Bears!
Citadels
King of Tokyo
Terror in Meeple City
Ascension: Deckbuilding Game
Tokaido
BANG!
Shadows over Camelot

Games, games and more games!

Our copy of Star Realms arrived last week, and we tried it out on Sunday night. It was hilarious, because we ended up playing 6 games because my husband refused to stop until he won a game - and in the first 5 I won every time - flattening him in a couple of them!! Great game though, I just want to play more and more! I can see this getting a lot more play.

I also went to Gradpad on Saturday, so got to try a new game there - Rolling Freight (was ok but nothing special, seemed like Age of Steam with lots of fiddly bits), and had our usual Friday night session, and on Sunday played a few games with the kids.

Games played with other adults:

6 x Star Realms

1 x 7 Wonders, Augustus, Ave Caesar, Coloretto, Concept, Five Tribes, For Sale, Lords of Waterdeep, Love Letter, Macao, Modern Art, Puerto Rico, Rolling Freight , Drunter & Druber

Games played with my children:

2 x Zoo's Who
1 x Heroica:Fortaan, Dobble

Only a few games this week.

With Miss B (who now has the plaster removed from her arm)...
* The Train Game -- a pretty basic dice game, but it works well and I love the dice.
* Plyt -- Miss B loves this for maths practice and we have the difficulty levels set so that she usually wins.

With adults...
* Tsuro -- managing to cram 5 games into a lunch break at work. Speed Tsuro!
* Steam Donkey -- a newly arrived Kickstarted game, we've played it once (slightly wrong!) so far, but it's got some neat ideas, plays well, and the wife likes it.

Only one game played during the week of 29th of September to the 5th of October, and that was a game of The Little Orchard with the kid.

I plan to rectify this next weekend as I'm going to Reykjavík and I'll meet up with some friends on Friday to play games.

I am constantly fooling with my "Top Twenty" which you can see on my BGG home page. In addition to re-jiggering things, there are often games that over time slide on out, replaced by new-to-us titles. For the first time ever, I had a game re-enter my Top Twenty, that had previously slid out. I never lost any regard for Stone Age. But its consistent goodness has caused me to recognize that it needed to jump back in. This rare re-entry earns it the Game-of-the-Week.

5x -5- Gulo Gulo
4x -7- Splendor: I have been hearing there is a strategy that attempts to break the game. Something involving reserving cards. I have seen, I am pretty sure, this strategy attempted on three occasions now, and have yet to see it work. But I'm keeping an eye out. ninja
3x -7- Chicken Cha Cha Cha
3x -7- Russian Railroads
2x -8- Egizia
2x -7- Istanbul: I have taught this now to pretty much everyone in my gaming groups, and I now have not won a game of this in forever. Remains my fav of 2014 so far.
2x -7- Stone Age
1x -6- Augustus
1x -7- Bruges
1x -5- Cities New to me. An okay, puzzly little game.
1x -10- Dominion
1x -6- Koryo
1x -8- Lost Cities
1x -8- Love Letter
1x -7- Montgolfiere
1x -5- Quilt Show New to us. A very uninspiring first play. I'll give it another try, but this could drop quick.
1x |9| Ra
1x -10- Race for the Galaxy
1x -4- Richard Ritterschlag
1x -7- Settlers of Catan
1x -8- Ticket to Ride
1x -7- Vegas Showdown

I liked Abluxxen instantly, and would have played several more rounds if the others had wanted to. Aside from SET Junior, there were no other new games, but I did play games with my father-in-law (and the kids) for the first time in my life (I think). It was wonderful, he was laughing a lot (and he isn't doing that all the time). So yes, a great week of gaming!

Schotten-Totten x 1
Kingdom Builder x 2
Cronberg x 1
Zeus on the Loose x 1

And, at the school games club's first meeting of this term, I introduced Pit and Apples to Apples, both very successful. I managed to find a copy of A2A Junior in a charity shop, and this worked much better as there weren't the vast number of unfamiliar people (to 10 year olds anyway) that can be found in the full version.
