Dear Santa

I'm not someone who talks a lot, so I'll just get right to the point.

Here's a geeklist I made to clarify my gaming preferences and wishes.

If you look at my profile you can find some basic info about who I play with and stuff. Then there's GameShelf:

http://www.gameshelf.se/?&u=narfi%2Cbobondi%2CBongoHerman

This shows the combined collections of me, my brother (narfi) and my main game buddy (bongoherman).

I'm trying to trim down my collection, get rid of games that don't get played and expand games that actually do get played. That does not mean I don't want new games in my collection, so if there's anything you think I would appreciate in my collection, please go ahead.

The games on the list (after the first, which I don't expect to expand due to cost) are in no particular order.

There are two game stores in Reykjavík and both have an online store:
www.nexus.is is the gamers' store
www.spilavinir.is is the family games store.

Highlights from my wishlist - 2017 Edition

I'm somewhat of a completionist, so expansions and promos for any game I own are always welcome.

Machi Koro is probably my favorite new-to-me game of 2015. I have both the Harbor and Millionaire's Row expansions, but am missing the promos. It doesn't get much table time any more, but I still like it and would love to play it more.

I have RoboRally and some extra cards from ArtsCow. But I'd love to have the expansions. The first time I played the game, we did so with Armed and Dangerous and it was just SO MUCH FUN. I meant to save up for an expansion or two this year, but when I finally had some spare money, I bought a bicycle.

Power Grid is a favorite, even though it doesn't hit the table that often. I have several maps for it + extra power plants and promos. But I'm always eager to add stuff to the box: More maps, upgraded tokens, reimplementations.

I have 11 games from the franchise, but am always on the look out for the ones I'm missing + expansions and promos I don't have. ...)

I'm a big fan of Ticket to Ride. I have a bunch of stuff from it, but there's always place for new maps. I've heard Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 5 – United Kingdom & Pennsylvania is really good.

Village is a favorite with my small gaming group (my brother, my friend and his fiance) and I've got the first expansion + some promos and small expansions. I'm still missing the Village Port expansion and the one tile from 20 Jahre Darmstadt Spielt. My Village does also look interesting.

I really like Zooloretto, but it doesn't get played enough. I play a solo-multiplayer once in a while, to refresh the expansion rules, but I don't remember when was the last time I really used any expansions other than the single tiles. I still want to add more stuff to the box - I know, I have a problem.

I think I have all official items for 7 Wonders, but as most of my game sessions are 2 player, I'd love to add 7W: Duel to my collection.Thank you FTLSS The Anniversary Packs, Phryne and Stonehenge are very sought after. Any fan made expansion would also be very cool.

King of Tokyo is always popular with some of my friends. I have the expansions and some of the promos. My brother has King of New York
, but I'm still interested in adding it to the collection as he lives out of city and we don't meet that often. I'm also still short of King of Tokyo: Garfield's Gift Promo Card, King of Tokyo: The Horde Promo Card snd most of the new promos + whatever came with the new edition..

Pandemic is my favorite cooperative game. I haven't played a legacy game yet, but I'd love to try Pandemic Legacy out. There are also expansions and other Pandemic games I haven't played yet. I've finished Legacy once and am getting close to finishing with another group. I've also acquired the expansions and TBT Biohazard Containment Unit. Other games in the franchise would be welcome though.

Chibis!!!Thank you FTLSS

I've got Dominion: Intrigue and some all the promos and many of the expansions, but would love to add more variety[/-} everything else to the game.

and I have combined our SmallWorld collections and between us we have everything except the 6 player board and Sky Islands. [-]As it's very unlikely we'll ever have 6 players, this isn't high on the wishlist but for the reason of completing the collection.

Las Vegas is a family game night favorite. I don't think the expansion is necessary, but it would be fun to add it to the game.

Sleeves! For the longest time I hated playing with sleeved cards. Later I learned that it was probably because I'd been playing with cheap or wrong-sized sleeves. Good quality sleeves that fit the cards nicely are enjoyable to play with and they extend the game's lifespan.

Bling - Dice tower, wall deco, dice tray, table cloth, coasters...

Kingdomino is probably the game I and Anna Rún like equally most playing together. I'd love to add it and Queendomino to my collection.

Lords of Vegas has been popular within the family and I'm missing the expansion.

I really like Quadropolis and many of my buddies like it too. I don't have any expansions or promos, except what came with the game - at least I think they were included from the get go, but I bought the game 2nd hand.

Catan is Anna Rún's favorite game and we play it a lot. I like adding different modules to it to increase the variability. Explorers and Pirates is the only big box expansion I'm missing, but there's also a bunch of small expansions, promos and spinoffs I'd like to have.

Bongo owns this game, but I'd like to have it too, as it's very simple but still interesting and goes down well with pretty much anyone.

I and my brothers have four big boxes from Queen Games: Kingdom Builder, Fresco, Escape: The Curse of the Temple and Alhambra + Alhambra Special Edition. There are some expansions and promos that have been published after that and we really need to add them to the boxes.

There are many other games that I'd love to add to my collection. Many of them I can access through my gaming buddies, but would love to have them accessible every day. Examples are: Dice Forge, Century: Spice Road, Galaxy Trucker, Sheriff of Nottingham, Celestia, Barony (+Sorcery), Red7, Troyes and I could keep going.

Highlights from my wishlist

I've listed the items that make up the top of my list. This list is just meant as a guide - you're more than welcome to get something else, if you think I'll like it.

Gamers tell me I don't care enough about my games - I don't sleeve them and I let my kids and their friends play with them as they want. But I've tought them, since they were little, to respect the components. They don't bend cards and they show their friends how to treat cards and boards.

Family tells me I'm too obsessed with my games - I bag everything nicely and ask people to wash their hand before playing, if we've been eating and ban chips from the gaming table.

I don't mind 2nd hand or pnp. Actually I'm all for 2nd hand if it looks good and I can save some money, that's why I frequent the local thrift stores and flea markets. I don't have much pnp, but have really considered crafting some fanmade expansions for my favorite games.

Machi Koro is probably my favorite new-to-me game of 2015. I have both the Harbor and Millionaire's Row expansions, but am missing the promos. I play this with my brother and sister in law, as well as the kids. I liked the base game, but it lacked replayability. The expansions fixed that and now it's one of my favorites.

Carcassonne is my all-time favorite. I have all the large expansions and 5 variants. I'm always on the look out for small expansions, promos and different base games (Winter Edition, StarWars, Gold Rush...)

2015 in review:

Stefán:

Finally found a job as landscape architect towards the end of 2014. By the end of January 2015 it was evident that the studio didn't have enough projects, so the newest employee was layed off. I was unemployed for a couple of months, had a couple of interviews and tried out a couple of places before I went to an interview for a summer worker for Reykjavík Golf Club. I was, during the 1st interview, offered a permanent position as head (an lone) gardener. I accepted and have been taking care of the surroundings of the club's two courses.

I managed to keep my place in the national rugby team and went to the Europeans in Zenica, Bosnia y Herzegovina. We made a good trip and earned 9th place - won the bowl. I tore both hamstrings and it took most of the summer to heal.

My most played games of 2015 are Carcassonne (all time favorite), Machi Koro, Las Vegas, Pandemic, Can't Stop, Ticket to Ride and Zooloretto: The Dice Game.

Anna Rún (wife):

Kindergarten teacher for 4-5 year olds. Not into gaming, but playes an occational game of TtR, Carcassonne or Catan.

Ásdís Gréta (9yo):

Playes football (soccer) and loves it. She's mostly kept the goal, but coach tries to rotate the positions as much as possible, so she gets some time playing out in the field too.

She's ont much into gaming, but if her friends are over and ask to play, she'll join. She does like to play ONUW and The Resistance: Avalon. She likes drawing, and is pretty good at it, and crafting.

Freyja Rakel (7yo):

She took up swimming earlier this year and is doing well. She loves the water and we frequent the swimming pools around town. All pools in Icelan are geothermally heated, so we swim and hit the hot tubs out doors year round.

She likes gaming from time to time. Carcassonne, TtR, CubeQuest, ONUW, The Resistance: Avalon, Futterneid and Panic Tower are the usual suspects, but she also likes to go to Spilavinir (our FLGS) and try out new games.

So, I got a letter from FTL Santa: Santa / Prince Adam

Oh boy, Stefán, it's time to see ya again! How nice to come and get some proper snow again. I wish I could pop into some of your geyser spas on the way, too. Ho, ho, ho!

How I have missed you for the last 10 months. I'm so happy to hear from you again. You really should take some time off after Christmas to relax in our warm rivers and hot tubs.

So, tell me, what great achievements do you have this year? What are you most happy about? How would you change the world to bring more good into it? What game would you like to appear next year? Any favourites on your mind?

I believe I've been a fairly good boy this year. Achievements and happy things would be (in any order) 1) scoring my 2nd international try at the European Rugby Tournament, 2) helping my younger daughter getting over her anxiety (she's doing great now, has made a lot of progress in the last couple of months, but there are till things we need to work on), 3) being the parent-in-charge when my older daughter's football team has been playing in out of city tournaments and 4) getting a job (and making a good first summer impression) as head gardener for Reykjavík Golf Club.

There best way to make the world better is to follow the one rule to rule them all: "Don't be an asshole".

Games to appear? How about a legacy game about the history of Iceland, where we start in the settlement age, 870 - 930 (even though it's known that people were living here earlier) and every year or two, a new expansion box is published so we'd advance to the Saga-Age > First-Christian Age > Sturlunga-Age and so on. The board evolves as areas are settled or different families gain power, rules change with a republic vote at Alþingi and you can earn just as much power by writing books as building military.

Please, keep your old Santa posted here if you have some specific heart-warming wishes, even/or especially if they are not exactly game-related and not easily displayed on your wishlist. You've done a great job writing the wishlist this year. Thanks, it will help me and my helpers a lot!

Oh, Santa - you know I love presents. Funny socks, weird candy, interesting recipes, new car, bumper stickers for my cargo bike, plant seeds, board game bling ... There are so many things, big and small, that make me happy

So, let your imagination go wild and say how can we make you happy. Anything goes ninja

Have a great time and see ya soon!
Santa

I really should get back to my studies now. I hope I've answered most of your questions, but don't hesitate to hit me again.

You're the best, Santa

Ok, so I have the itenerary ready and would like to confirm that your chimney is clear. It happens sometimes that people fix those fake fireplaces and then the plastic clogged chimneys. You are not one of those modern lads, are you?

I live in an apartment building and the chimny leads down to the washing room - I wouldn't want you to try it. But the roof is leaking, right above my older daugter's room, maybe the hole is large enough to fit you in. Otherwise, you can either leave it oon the balcony or simply ring the bell and come in for a cup of coffe and some norwegian Vestlands Lefsa cinnamon rolls.

Are your hamstrings all well now? Shall I ask my team to squeeze some mild moose treatment and fresh tree frog dew to prepare the painkiller? Just kidding

Hamstrings are good, for now at least. But some moose treatmend and fresh tree frog dew has never done any harm. I don't take painkillers though.

Good thoughts about the theme for the Icelandic game. Do you have a team with resources to work a bit more seriously on the subject or is it just a general idea? It sounds really interesting.

I guess I could gather a team to work on the idea, but for the time being, it's just floating in mid-air. Between work, school, family, other work, excercise and playing board games, there's not much time for much else. But I'm happy with throwing ideas out in the cosmos - they'll come back to me one day.

Happy time to you Prince Adam (why the Coward? Something to do with cows in your clan? )

Merry Christmas to you too Mr. Claus, and the whole family. Prince Adam is He-Man's alter ego, and he's a coward, the complete opposite of He-Man. It has nothing to do with cows, even though I'm raised on a farm.

A message from santa

Santa wrote:
Subject: Ho-Ho-Ho
Hello my little rugby player (oh wait, rugby players usually are exact opposite of little) from Iceland

Believe it or not, Santa did his share of rugby back in the old days - but scrums were not good for my back so Mrs Santa insisted I switch to some other sport which turned out to be watching Rugby World Cup on telly and eating her delicious pies. Pity, it was fun to run for a try carrying 15 elves on my back (these guys are small so our home rule was 5 elves=1 Santa or raindeer).

Now if we got to mention elves let's go to that Iceland part - some of them just grow too big due to weird gene mutations and can't stay here anymore. So we have to hide them somewhere without bringing much attention - first we thought of Greenland but that would be too harsh on them and we picked your nice island. But these little (or in this case not so little anymore) fellas find it hard to be normal and so talanted that contrary to our intention most of them are well knowm to the world. So now you know our little secret about Bjork, Jonsi and the rest of them - but please do not tell anybody.

I'm so glad you managed to take care of creating your very own gaming group - Mrs Santa is not much into boardgames (same as Mrs Bobondi) and having little Santa boy or girl (not to mention more than one of them) is not on her priority list either. Good that you faired better in your negotiations about that - I suppose you didn't exactly talk about gaming group memebers but we both know what your real intention was.

Oh, this turns into some kind of novel - have to get back to work now, and finding right gift for you is on top of my priority list. Are you fine with having just the expansion to your favourite games? Some kids find it frustrating if there's nithing completely new, they call it "cult of the new" I've heard. Are you playing your games in English? I've never heard about "Icelandic" editions but it's better to check.

Santa

Dear Santa

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I've been busy with playing board games and closing out items in the JVMF Auction.

Thanks for clarifying the deal with Björk and Jónsi. I suppose Of Monsters and Men, FM Belfast, Magni and many others are also of elfish origin.

I'm very fine with receiving an expansion for Christmas. I'm not a follower of the "cult of the new", as I have a collection of games that I like and aim to keep the size within reasonable limits. I'm a sucker for expansions and love adding to the games I own.

This does not mean I don't like new games - I welcome them too, and if you prefer going that direction, go ahead.

We play games in english, as there are only language based mainstream games (trivial, party, words) that are translated to Icelandic, and I have a few non-native Icelanders in my game group.

I'm so excited for Christmas and can't wait to see what you're getting me.

Stefán

Mrs Sanata was so disappointed with me for this that said she'll make her own package for you as well - such a good boy doesn't deserve his Christmas being ruined by some old fool that took too many tuckles playing rugby, that's what she said. And I can't blame her for being harsh - well, at least not when she's around.

Those pesky elves demand to have you surname and refuse to send out package without full info. I suspect it's more about their lazy nature as for the most part they are looking for a reason not to do something rather than to do something, but as long as their request is formally correct there's not much I can do. On a positive side that might indicate they actually are ready to ship something (Mrs Santa is big believer in positive thinking - but she doesn't have to deal with those little scamps everyday, so I wouldn't be so 100% sure but there has to be something cooking)

Best regards
Santa

Dear Santa

I'm sure the fault lies with the customs people - I don't really know more than you about what their purpose in society is. I will call them tomorrow and see what's going on.

I'm getting super excited about this present and even more about the one from Mrs Santa. You must give her my best wishes.

I will post a new item to the list after I've talked to those customs people - whoever they are.

Dear Santa

Please check my profile for further information.

I've talked to some people who pretend they've got nothing to do with these customs peoples. But they told me it would help to know which kind of service you used to send the parcel to Iceland. "Satna's Sleigh" was not the answer they were looking for. If you have an online invoice, that would help, and also a verification that this is a present.

You should be able to clear this via the links provided on my profile. If you prefer me doing it, ask HeadElf to email the info. (Don't worry about this email thing - HeadElf knows what it is).

Dear Santa

It looks like everything has been taken care of. The tracking site tells me they have already tried to deliver the package, but there was no slip in my mailbox. I will go to the post office on my way home from work and see what's up and then update this item asap.

Tell Ms Santa not to worry, and there's no need for her to take any action in the direction you mentioned in your last letter, but no matter what - I'm sure I will be one happy boy when I open the presents on the 24th.

Edit: The line at the post office was too long today. I had no wish to stand in line for an hour. Will go early tomorrow instead.

Edit: I went to the post office and they were going to charge me 40 Euros for customs. I told them that was outrageous and I shouldn't have to pay for my Christmas presents. They're going to re-evaluate it, but it'll take a couple more days.

On another note - You are OBVIOUSLY way too generous. Knowing the customs limit (about 80 euros) and spying the number of items in the box - I don't deserve all this, Santa. I feel like I'm taking advantage of this gift exchange, but I will do my best to repay the generosity to my target next year.
